Yearly Archives: 2017

It’s Mother’s Day this Sunday, so if you’re looking for the perfect gift, or you need to share a few handy hinters to your nearest and dearest, look no further than Brooke & Shoals. Founded by Alison Banton in Greystones in Co Wicklow, Alison’s passion for fragrance was inspired by the aromas of the petals she picked as a child in her great-aunt Mollie’s circular rose garden. Mollie used to say the ‘babbling brook and the whispering shoals’ would help her turn Alison’s rose petals into perfume. But overnight, the kind old lady would add real perfume to the little girl’s watery mixture; fooling her into thinking she had created the wonderful aroma.

‘My great-aunt and the mysterious brook and shoals awakened my interest in perfumes, so I added an ‘e’ and turned it into a name that has wonderful fragrance memories for me’.

Alison decided to create her own range of candles that were superior to other Irish made candles on the market. Her vision was simple, high quality, divine fragrances, natural wax, beautiful packaging and Irish made. Her customers loved them. She built on her experience of fragrance by going to Grasse in the South of France, the capital of fragrance, to study it in more detail and gather new inspiration.

Originally, Alison’s wonderful fragranced candles were sold only in her own shop in Greystones, however, as the brand became popular and demand increased, you will now find the Brooke and Shoals natural wax candles, home fragrance diffusers and natural body products in good stores throughout Ireland, the UK and Europe.

We have €120 worth of Brooke & Shoals goodies to give away to one lucky SHEmazing! fan. To be in with a chance to win, just fill in your details below. Good luck x

Fashion mega-brand and noughties favourite Abercrombie & Fitch has filed High Court action against a small clothes shop in Claremorris, Co Mayo.

What issue could a huge fashion house like A&F have with a local Mayo business?

Well it's all down to a debate about the name, according to The Times

Holly Star/Facebook

A&F claims that the stores name and logo breaches the copyright of the Hollister brand.

The shop, called Holly Star uses an eagle as its brand logo, while Hollister's branding utilises the silhouette of a seagull.

The shop stocks mens, womens, and childrens clothing, including brands like Freddy, Oaklands and Super Dry, which can be seen on their Facebook page.

Was anyone else up early enough to witness the blizzard that unfolded this morning?

Met Éireann has issued a status yellow weather alert as temperatures plummeted last night, and warns of more snow and ice to come.

"Very cold today, with frost, ice and lying snow in many areas at first," says the national weather forecaster.

"A bright day in most areas, with sunny spells and showers, some falling as snow in the early morning, but mostly of rain, hail and sleet during the day, some of them heavy, with isolated thunderstorms, especially in the west and northwest."

Clearly winter isn't quite done with us yet.

AA Roadwatch has also issued a warning, reminding drivers to be extra careful today during the difficult driving conditions.

"Give yourself plenty of time to reach your destination and use major routes as they are more likely to have been gritted than secondary roads."

"Remember, stopping distances are 10 times longer in ice and snow."

Clearly Ireland has a lot of Disney Fans, as Beauty and the Beast set an Irish box office record over the weekend, grossing €2,200,000.

This mega-sum makes the film the most high earning three-day opening weekend in Irish box office history, despite us all being busy with Paddy's Day.

"Beauty And The Beast enchanted Irish audiences with the biggest opening weekend in history," reads a tweet on the Disney Ireland Twitter page.

"This tale as old as time will continue to ring on in hearts after the last petal falls."

The film is a live-action adaptation of the animated classic, starring Harry Potter heroine Emma Watson as Belle, and Dan Stevens as the Beast.

The film also stars Ewan McGregor as Lumière, Ian McKellen as Cogsworth, Emma Thompson as Mrs. Potts, Stanley Tucci as Cadenza, and Kevin Kline as Maurice alongside Belle and the Beast.

As well as a whole host of amazing actors, singers John Legend and Ariana Grande are on board to contribute their voices to the flick's classic song Be Our Guest.

With this much talent in one flick, no wonder it's smashing the box office.

The former Deputy First Minister of Northern Ireland, Martin McGuinness, has died this morning.

The former Minister passed away aged 66 after a short illness.

President Michael D Higgins has paid tribute to Mr McGuinness for his contribution to the peace process in Northern Ireland.

"As President of Ireland, I wish to pay tribute to his immense contribution to the advancement of peace and reconciliation in Northern Ireland – a contribution which has rightly been recognised across all shades of opinion," said the President in a statement.

"As a political colleague of many years, and having participated together in the Presidential election campaign of 2011 that brought us all over Ireland, Sabina and I have appreciated both Martin McGuinness’ warmth and his unfailing courtesy."

"In addition to his services in public life, as an inclusive believer in community in all its forms he will also be remembered for his warm support for Derry GAA and Derry FC."

"His death leaves a gap that will be difficult to fill. May he rest in peace.”

Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams TD also paid his respects to Mr McGuinness this morning:

“Throughout his life Martin showed great determination, dignity and humility and it was no different during his short illness."

“He was a passionate republican who worked tirelessly for peace and reconciliation and for the re-unification of his country."

"But above all he loved his family and the people of Derry and he was immensely proud of both."

If there's one show which is guaranteed to bring us out in a sweat, it's Don't Tell the Bride.

The thoughts of leaving the entire wedding (and the choosing of the gown) in the hands of the groom doesn't exactly inspire confidence in many brides-to-be.

And that's why it makes for such good TV.

The latest couple to take part in the emotional rollercoaster that is the RTÉ show are Nikki and Jamie who met on Plenty of Fish five years ago,

And in keeping with the aquatic theme, Jamie opted for a blue gown for the big day.

Tune into RTÉ2 tonight at 10pm to see how Jamie's theme went down…

When Adele sings, you stop and listen.

And when she lets rip at you, you definitely take heed… as one security guard at her recent Melbourne show learned.

In footage which is doing the rounds on Twitter today, the London-born singer interrupts her performance to tell a security guard to rein in the orders he was giving her audience.

"Excuse me sir,” she said. “I know you work here but can you please stop telling people to sit down?"

Reminding him that her fans were entitled to stand up and dance if they wanted, she added: "This is a music show, if people can’t see then they can stand up. And if you’re moaning about people dancing, then what the f*ck did you come to a show for?"

"If I see one more person being told to sit down, then I swear to God…” she added as the crowd cheered her on.

Unfortunately not everyone is with Adele on this one, with numerous Twitters users criticising the singer for unnecessarily embarrassing the guard.

"Great to see #Adele belittling and embarrassing a security guard for just doing his job," wrote one.

"B*llocks. If you want to dance go to a dance hall, not a concert. A seat is exactly what it says, a seat!" added another,

Hmmm…
