Yearly Archives: 2017

by

Last night saw the return of the Eurovision final to the Ukrainian capital of Kiev, and although Ireland weren't fortunate enough to secure a place in this year's competition, our Twitter game was still on point.

After 53 years or trying, Portugal finally came out on top for the first time with Salvador Sobral's performance of Amar Pelos Dois.

Here's some of the best reactions to last night's cheesy, glitter fuelled extravaganza.

We all LOVE a good TV show, and there is nothing more exciting than when that completely unreal series gets a movie of its very own.

Now, the beloved Downton Abbey is officially getting the movie treatment, and we couldn't be more delighted.

'Film bosses have requested the services of crew members and accountants to work on the picture,' according to The Sun.

'A budget has been set and now it’s a case of getting everything in place to start shooting.'

Filming of the future box office smash hit is set to start in September 2017.

'It would take something big to stop the project from happening now,' explained the source that spoke to The Sun.

This could possibly be one of the best TV-to-move adaptions we've ever heard of.

It's the weekend, and sometimes all we want to do on a Saturday night is lie back and look at some pretty pictures on Instagram.

We are here for you, and totally support your desire to switch off for a bit.

When we recently stumbled upon the mind-blowing coffee art of South Korean barista, Kangbin Lee, we found ourselves stalking his Instagram for hours.

Kangbin recreates iconic paintings of the masters, our favourite scenes from Disney classics, and cartoons – and they are literally almost too cute to drink.

Occasionally, the barista even throws in some standard heart-shaped latte art – but that is not what we're here for.

Kangbin uses edible inks and a dotting tool to manipulate the foam and colours, and it is honestly one of the most impressive things on the Internet.

He has (rightly) accumulated quite a following on social media, with over 74,000 followers on Instagram.

Coffee and pretty pictures – what's not to love?

Irish designer Paul Costello is facing criticism after his stunt on The Late Late Show last night, after the 71-year-old made some comments about women that some online viewers found offensive.

When asked for his opinion on certain topics, the designer made some odd comments about women, or 'great girls.'

The fashion designer, who has a popular collaboration range at Dunnes Stores, commented that Rod Stewart’s wife was 'a bit gawky,' and stated that she was 'trying too hard to be the second or third wife.'

When asked about Camilla Parker Bowles' sense of style, he commented that she was 'very small,' but that she was being advised well on how to dress.

He also volunteered the information that he would 'definitely not swap' his wife for a chance with Camilla. He also referred to his wife as 'well bred.'

When asked by Ryan what he meant by his reference to certain women being 'hatchets,' Paul replied: 'A hatchet is a lovely girl who you really love for maybe a couple of weeks and then you go, "Ciao bella,"' before saying that he was a pro-woman designer.

He also said of his meeting with the late Princess Diana that he did not address her as a royal, but instead greeted her with a 'howaya honey, you're looking good.'

'Let me see how you’re looking, honey,' he told Princess Diana at the time.

He also referred to Victoria Beckham as a 'great little girl,' and said he believes she should 'smile a little more.'

He went on to compliment Kate Middleton on her 'great legs.'

Twitter was quick to react to the designer's comments, with one user referring to them as 'obnoxious.'

You can make up your own mind about Paul's comments by watching the full interview here.

Ireland is mad for gin at the moment, as we can clearly see from the amount of gin events and festivals lined up this summer.

The first Ranelagh Gin Festival was such a smash success last month that they're brining it back for round two.

If you're feeling like a G&T on June 1, you can head to the second rendition of Ranelagh Gin Festival

A post shared by The Hill Pub (@thehillpub) on

As well as being located in one of Dublin's most pleasant areas, the G&Ts at this festival are far from overpriced, at a very reasonable €6.00.

Hosted by The Hill pub, there are a number of delicious concoctions to try.

You can check out the event details here, and we'll see you there, vat of gin in hand.

Starbucks have become serious fans of colour in recent months, between unicorn frappuccinos and mermaid beverages – they cannot get enough of bright shades.

The coffee house have now teamed up for a fantastically colourful collaboration with Ban.Do, a Los Angeles based company, and the products are divine.

ban.do x Starbucks

'All the designs were based off of the idea that we'd bring a slice of L.A. sunshine and fun to the other side of the world,' said Jen Gotch, founder and chief creative officer of ban.do said in a press release.

'We wanted to give our international fans – both old and new – something really special that they couldn't get anywhere else.'

The two famous brands have created 10 products that are packed with happy vibes and gorgeous hand-painted pastel florals inspired by L.A. beach culture.

The collaboration includes Starbucks' signature cups and  accessories, like coasters, luggage tags, bags and notebooks – all embossed with floral patterns and the Good Times slogan.

The Ban.Do x Starbucks collection will be available starting on May 16, exclusively at Starbucks locations, and we cannot wait.

Summer – we're waiting!

Getting the likes on Instagram is, to some people, a pretty important aspect of the entire posting process.

Putting the time and effort into creating and editing the perfect image can make people feel good, so posting at a prime time is worth it when you want the world to see your latest pic.

Hopper HQ has done some research into the best time to post a photo on Instagram, leading to more likes.

The best time on weekdays is between 6pm-7.30pm, simply because this is the time that most people are on the app.

Because there are more people on the app, there are more chances that your post will be engaged with, thereby garnering more likes.

11am at the weekend is also prime time to post, so get to brunch early if you want to optimise your likes on a Sunday morning.

The research also found that posts with captions do better overall, but don't make them too long, as posts with captions where the viewer has to click 'read more' receive a significantly lower amount of likes than those with short and snappy lines.

And as for filters, Gingham is the most popular and attracts the most likes and comments.

Happy snapping!

'Avocado hand,' as doctors are calling it, is a new phenomenon that has prompted the British Association of Plastic Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons to warn people about the practice of slicing.

Apparently, improper slicing of avocados can lead to nerve and tendon damage – which is a very upsetting revelation.

"People do not anticipate that the avocados they buy can be very ripe and there is minimal understanding of how to handle them," Simon Eccles, a former Royal Society of Medicine president of plastic surgery told The Times.

He also added that his hospital endures a Saturday 'post-brunch surge' of such injuries, and he sees four patients each week due to avocado hand.

Some people even require surgery to fix the issue, and they may never regain full use of the affected hand.

The injury has become so common that doctors are now calling for safety warning stickers to be put on the fruit (btw, we had no idea avocados were fruits until today).

Avocado Fruits

To avoid giving yourself avocado hand, place the avocado on a flat surface with your hand on top and gently make incisions around the outside. When you are de-stoning the fruit, wrap it in a towel and leave only the stone exposed.

'Use the edge of a heavy sharp knife to chop into the summit of the soft pit, so that it is slightly buried. Holding the knife, so that the pit is stabilised, use a towel to twist the pit out,' David Shewring, vice-president of the British Society for Surgery of the Hand, told The Times.

We've all experienced that unfortunate moment where a personal hygiene product has irritated our skin or gotten in our eyes, leading us to belive we will be left with a perpetual ailment in a moment of showering melodrama.

One girl had a similar experience when using a particular brand of Mint and Tea Tree shower gel, and took to Facebook to share her story after the tingly gel set her 'vagina ablaze.'

The hilarious but unfortunate story has been shared more than 138,000 times on the social media site, with the comments section playing host to some very comical and similar incidents.

'I took the Mint and Tea Tree Shower Gel and began to work it into a lather. I applied it to first one leg, then the other, and shaved them diligently. (Yes, feel free to be impressed at my commitment to body defoliation at 6.45am on a Wednesday morning. I was too.) So far, so good,' she began the post.

'I washed my arms and shaved underneath them. I washed my neck, breasts, stomach and back. Thus far, it had been a positively first class bathing experience.'

'And then. AND THEN. Oh. Dear. God. MY VAGINA WAS ABLAZE.'

'For a moment, I wasn’t entirely sure what had happened. Had I repeated the never to be forgotten error when I managed to apply hair removal cream which was strictly not for front bottoms to my front bottom? Had a stray spark inadvertently set light to my pubic thatch?'

'BECAUSE IT F****** FELT LIKE IT.'

'Yes, your innocuous looking green bottle of so called shower gel, it turns out, is an absolute f****** liability. MY FLAPS WERE ON F****** FIRE. I had a quick look at the ingredients list to see if it contained gasoline. It did not.'

'There was a warning though. ‘KEEP AWAY FROM EYES.’ Keep away from eyes? KEEP AWAY FROM EYES? Frankly, my eyes were the least of my problems right now.'

'I frantically scrubbed my flaps, which by now felt as though they were being ceremoniously scrubbed by ants wearing ice skates laced with chilli sauce,' she continued (we're obsessed with this woman's turn of phrase).

'Some twelve hours later, my front bottom has finally calmed down, though may well be suffering from as yet unconfirmed PTSD. My eyes have eventually stopped watering.'

'May I suggest a rebranding of the front of your bottles of Mint and Tea Tree Shower Gel? Something along the lines of the following: 7,927 tingling leaves which will accost your genitalia until it screams for mercy.’

'If nothing else, it will certainly stand out on the shelf.'

'Anyway, thanks for brightening up my morning. And my front bottom, which has never been so lively.'

We're crying, bit with laughter and with the thought of the sensation.

The story of Jamal Sur and his missing PHD research went viral this week after JK Rowling tweeted his plea for help, asking the Irish public for assistance in locating the missing work.

The author took to Twitter to share Jamal's plight, saying 'One of my worst nightmares has happened to this poor man. RT to help!'

Since the tweet went viral Jamal has been reunited with his bag, laptop and PHD work which he left in the back of a taxi on a night out.

The taxi driver’s wife Sharon actually saw JK Rowling’s tweet and realised that she had his bag at her house.

She tracked Jamal down via social media thanks to the tweet by the Harry Potter author, she told Newstalk.

Sharon said that the couple had been trying to track down the student but were having no luck.

We're just so glad that Jamal has been reunited with his work!

Noughties pop sensation Samantha Mumba has thrown her hat in the ring to represent Ireland in the Eurovision song contest 2018.

Ireland’s Eurovision song contest entry for this year failed to qualify for the finals.

Brendan Murray from Galway sang Dying to Try, which unfortunately didn't take us through to the finals for the fourth year running.

In spite of winning more times than any other country, Ireland hasn’t had a win since 1996, so sending Samantha to the host country might not be a bad idea.

The Irish Times writer Jenn Gannon suggested that Samantha might be the type to take home the Eurovision trophy, and the singer agreed in a retweet.

A post shared by Samantha Mumba (@samanthamumba) on

'I would LOVE to,' she exclaimed in response.

Come on people, lets make this happen, we need to see a rendition of Gotta Tell You on the European stage.
