Yearly Archives: 2017

So, whether it's a full Irish, a kale smoothie or a seven-hour nap, we all have our own favourite hangover remedies.

Sure, we might feel a little better afterwards, but deep down we know that only time will cure that thumping sensation in our heads.

But what if we told you there could be a miracle solution in the very near future?

Well, Sisun Lee, feels so passionate about his hangover cure that he quit his job in order to launch his very own company, Morning Recovery.

Remember your Morning Recovery tonight. Happy Thursday!

A post shared by Morning Recovery (@morningrecovery) on

On July 5, the startup company will open for business, selling an FDA-compliant hangover remedy.

It all started about a year ago when the 26-year-old travelled back to his home country of South Korea. While he was there, Sisun spent a lot of time drinking and partying with friends.

But instead of suffering through the aches and pains that a night of drinking can bring, his Korean friends introduced him to some popular Korean hangover drinks.

Speaking to Business Insider, Sisun explained how the drinks worked for him: "The next day, I woke up feeling great."

Upon returning to the US, he searched for similar drinks, but found it difficult to find anything of the same standard.

Not content with going back to his old, hungover ways, Sisun instead ordered some Korean drinks online and shared them with friends, particularly his former colleagues at Facebook, who loved them.

Hope your Monday morning is amazing so far! Sending you all the good vibes.

“I tried to import them” and become a distributor, he told Business Insider, but understandably these companies were not interested in going into business with someone with no background in beverages or consumer goods.

But this wasn't going to stop him. Sisun began to research ingredients and soon discovered a herbal compound called dihydromyricetin (DHM) found in the Oriental raisin tree, which has been used as a hangover cure in Asia for thousands of years.

He also learned what it takes to make the perfect hangover drink:

"Purity matters, quantity matters, and you need a lot of other ingredients for hangovers. You lose Vitamin B and Vitamin C in the body. These are all things that are not in Korean hangover drinks."

The remedy, set to be released on July 5, is FDA compliant meaning that all its ingredients are approved food supplements, but Sisun's hope is that one day his remedy will become FDA approved.

If this were to happen, doctors would be able to prescribe the drug as a medicinal cure.

Cheers to that!

We hope Zayn overcomes his anxiety and can be comfortable performing live again.

In 2002, Marsha Abrahams, a qualified CIMA accountant, identified a gap in the market when it came to the availability of city-centre spas.

Having known from a young age that she would like to own and run her business one day, Marsha co-founded the Buff Day Spa on Dublin's South King Street which she helped to develop into a thriving business with 20 staff and €1m annual turnover.

However, following a trip to Greece in 2015, the course of Marsha's already stellar career took somewhat of a turn.

Finding herself hugely impressed with a Juliette Armand treatment during the trip, Marsha made the decision to sell her half of the Buff Day Spa business and concentrate 100% on distributing Juliette Armand in Ireland.

Since bringing the brand into Ireland two years ago the unique skincare range is now stocked in nearly 100 salons nationwide, her target is to be in every county in Ireland by the end of the year. With only five to go after chatting with her I’m sure she will achieve this.

As part of our Ladies Who Launch series, Marsha, who won the Dublin City LEO Female Entrepreneur Award in 2016, sat down with SHEmazing for a chat about business, backpacking and babies.

Marsha, can you remember a distinct moment when you decided the business route was for you?

"From the age of 13, I helped dad out in his business – hairdressing. And I watched his business fail.  He was too nice and wasn’t prepared to put the prices up when he needed to. I knew at that age I wanted to run my own business and make a success of it.

It was in the back of my mind and I decided to become an accountant.

Having co-founded an incredibly successful city-centre spa, you essentially took a gamble on Juliette Armand, and may have come up against negativity or reservation from concerned colleagues and family members. How do you generally deal with that?

I cannot begin to tell you how supportive my husband was through all of this. He really did put his faith in me and this product and would like to thank him publicly for his support (if that’s OK!), he is the most important person to consider.

We are in a partnership and work together really well, outside of that I listened to what anyone had to say, nod politely and get on with it!

You have mentioned in the past the impact your father’s salon had on your career aspirations growing up. Do you feel you learned more from his triumphs or his pitfalls?

"I wouldn’t say it was either, what I saw in my father was someone with an amazing work ethic, who would do whatever it takes to make sure there was a roof over our heads and food on the table.

"The failure of his business was due to him not wanting to offend anyone but he closed the business down leaving no one out of pocket apart from the tax man.

You acknowledged that your brain is always ticking over with new ideas and potential development plans, do you think that kind of mindset is a given for any entrepreneur?

Any other entrepreneur I have spoken to says the same, especially as a new start-up you have to be able to juggle several things at once to make sure everything gets done.

I also think that’s why the phase serial entrepreneur came about, we can’t just sit still with one thing. With being a distributor it gives me the opportunity to be able to look at other avenues without affecting my core business.

Having ‘done the backpacker thing with a vengeance’ but also worked three jobs at a time, were there points in your career when you longed for the carefree days of travel? How do you balance work and leisure?

Before I had children, there was many a time I wanted to just pack the bag and head off, I planned my holidays right and got to spend three weeks doing small breaks to places I still wanted to visit.

I don’t have a formal structure to my work week. With having my daughters with me in the office some afternoon, if the weather is nice I don’t have to ask anyone if I can leave early, I just close up and go to the park.

With today’s technology I have the freedom to do this by having my phone on me I can still respond to calls and emails and I can always come back and work in the evening once they have gone to bed if there is anything urgent.

You speak highly of the Plato Business Development Programme, can you give our readers an idea of how it affects both your personal and professional outlook?

I would highly recommend Plato to any small business that is going on to the next step, they help me get focused, put plans and objective together. There is peer to peer support and accountability.

Even when you have a team of people beneath you, running a business can feel very lonely and the group is great for giving good honest advice on tough decisions.

You say ‘timing is everything’; is this something you believe budding businesswomen should take into account when navigating their own career paths?

My personal motto is ‘what’s the worst that can happen?’ There is a reason things happen and a reason for everything.

So if it’s not going to kill you why not have a go? It brought me to where I am now.

According to emerging reports, it has been discovered that the 17-storey headquarters of Cork County Council uses similar cladding to the one which had been installed in Grenfell Towers in London.

The cladding, known as Reynobond Aluminium Composite Material, was installed in Carrigrohane Road's County Hall during a refurbishment project in 2006 – an endeavour which ultimately cost €62 million.

According to the council, the aluminium composite material is present on the exterior of the main council chamber within the foyer of an extension.

However, both the chief fire officer and the building’s facility manager are of the opinion that due to its limited use, coupled with installed fire safety measures which include sprinkler protection, automatic smoke ventilation system, automatic smoke detection, alarm systems and good escape routes, the material doesn't pose any increased risk to the individual.

Despite this, it has been established that an investigation into the proper installation of the material has been commissioned, and the council have confirmed that they will act on any recommendations put forward by experts.

The Grenfell Towers tragedy has claimed the lives of 79 people with the death toll expected to rise.

It's the end of the month and we're all feeling the pinch in the run-up to pay day.

However, that doesn't mean you have to hole yourself up on the couch every night eating whatever remains in the fridge.

There are plenty of delightful, cheap or free things to try in Dublin, and here are a few of our faves:

1. Cherry Comedy – €5.00

Cherry Comedy brings the laugher to Whelans every Monday night.

For a very reasonable €5.00, comedy fans are treated to a line-up of both new and seasoned comedians.

Just last night, both Neil Delamere and Foil, Arms and Hog took to the stage as secret guests at the show. And did we mention that gin and tonics are only €5.00 too?

2. Bubble Waffles at Eatyard €4.50

As if delicious confectionery wasn't enough to get you down to Eatyard, the Instagram opportunities from the Bubble Waffle Factory should seal the deal.

A bubble waffle, for those not in the know, is a delectable dessert inspired by the street food of Hong Kong.

The factory describe themselves as creating 'a bubble waffle, filled with ice cream, fruit, sprinkles, and any topping you can dream of, all so it looks like a cone.' We're so ready for dessert before dinner…

3. The Botanic Gardens – Free

If you feel like getting lost in the beauty of nature, The National Botanic Gardens of Ireland is the place to be.

If sprawling acres of beautful flower beds wasn't enough, the labyrinth of glasshouses is enough to keep any budding botanist enthralled for hours.

Check out the Palm House for truly breathtaking plants you won't see anywhere else in Ireland. And the little cactus room? We could stay there forever.

4. Aungier Danger – €3.00

Aungier Danger has become a Dublin institution.

The store creates some of the fluffiest, most delicious pastries, many of which have a great cause behind them such as raising awareness for homelessness or abortion rights.

Aungier Danger has a few locations dotted around Dublin, so find your closest one and get munching. We recommend the Very Berry or the Alice In Dangerland.

5. Women Should Be Both Seen & Heard – Free

Feel like brushing up on your feminist theory and gender equality knowledge for free?

Head down to Trinity College for the third in  a series of seminars for women and other under-represented groups, including non-binary folks, in research and academia.

The talk will focus on women making waves in the academic world, and Angela Mezzetti will lead the seminar.

It's free, but you have to register here

If ever there was a wedding photo that took our breath away, it's this one.

Captured by Laurie Brosnan and David Olsthoorn of Awake and Dreaming Photography, the photo shows newlyweds Michelle O’Leary and Ruaidhri Mohally at the summit of Carrauntoohil – Ireland's tallest mountain.

"Soooo good guys! What a view," added another.

We are so here for this.

Khloe Kardashian celebrated her 33rd birthday on Sunday, and has sent fans wild today over her latest Snapchat picture.

The reality star shared a snap of three Polaroid photos of her and her boyf, Tristan Thompson, and on one photo she wrote "Dad + Mum" in marker.

However, it seems Khloe re-thought her wording as she deleted the picture within ten minutes of posting.

She then took to Twitter to ask her followers for "hangover cures" after her birthday party.

But of course, that didn't stop fans from speculating:

Many fans will know that Khloe has wanted to be a mum for years, so whether the news is true or not, we hope to hear the pitter patter of tiny feet in the near future.

We hate to be that person chatting about Kim Kardashian's dog when there are greater issues in the world, but have you seen the thing?

He's quite possibly the most perfect ball of floof we have ever laid eyes on.

The pupper was purchased specifically for North West's birthday, after a source revealed to People that the four-year-old was missing 'having a baby in the family.'

A post shared by Kim Kardashian West (@kimkardashian) on

The puppy, a Pomeranian, is up there with the fluffiest things we've ever seen, and we kind of need Kim (or one of her entourage) to give him an Instagram page of his very own.

With the success of pupper accounts like Doug the Pug and Marnie the Dog, we think North's little addition is destined for social media stardom.

Kim took to Twitter to ask her fans to help her choose a name for the little guy.

The options were Baby Jesus, Peaches, Sushi and Goldie.

While Peaches ultimately came out tops in the poll, the Kardashian-Wests went rogue and opted for Sushi as the chosen name.

Sushi the Pomeranian is the perfect name for a brand new Insta page…

The call is set to come in around 4pm today.

This will be Varadkar's first official phone call with the US President since taking over the reins from Enda Kenny as Taoiseach.

The call comes as the POTUS has been given the green light to introduce his travel ban.

According to CNN, the US Supreme Court is 'allowing the ban to go into effect for foreign nationals who lack any "bona fide relationship with any person or entity in the United States."'

The ban has been reinstated until autumn.
