Yearly Archives: 2016

It's safe to say we've all had some hair disasters in the past, but it totally doesn't compare to Keira Knightley's hair blunders.

The actress has admitted that she now wears wigs because her gruaige got so bad from colouring it for movie roles.

Speaking to InStyle, Keira said: "I have dyed my hair virtually every colour imaginable for different films.

"It got so bad that my hair literally began to fall out of my head. So for the past five years I've used wigs, which is the greatest thing that's ever happened to my hair."

She also revealed how her hair drastically changed since having a baby.

“I have naturally crazy, curly hair – and since I’ve had the baby, it’s become 10 times thicker.

"So now I’ve been finding quite a lot of dreadlocks," she added.

Ah ladies, the things we go through to look good!

This year's Electric Picnic is set to be better than ever.

Not only are we going to be able to swim in a lake (which will be… interesting) BUT there's also a Fr Ted song contest taking place. YAAAS.

We all remember the episode where Ted and Dougal sang My Lovely Horse, and well, the comp is going to be a little like that.

But even better, is that there's going to be a mini-reunion. Eoin Mc Love and Fr Damo Lennon (Patrick McDonnell and Joe Rooney) are stopping by Stradbally Hall to judge A Rubbish New Song For Europe.

The competition is open to everyone and you can check out the details on the EP website.

In news that will really make you think 'WTF', a school in the Philippines has OUTLAWED dating between students.

Golden Heritage Polytechnic College in the Philippines believe that "true love waits" and forbids any intimate relationships to prevent teen pregnancy.

On a big yellow sign outside the school grounds, it says: "A love affair will surely destroy the life of a young lady student therefore this institution prohibit intimate relationship between male and female students."

And what to know what's better (or worse), the same thing is printed on teacher's uniforms

It's unclear if this applies to relationships between students or any relationships for the "young lady students."

But c'mon, they can't be serious. Promote safe sex instead of banning dating.

As far as we knew, munching on some fruit was the healthy option, but now some experts have come up to say that we're all wrong, and eating too much fruit is actually bad for you.

According to personal trainer Callum Melly, eating too much fruit or eating it at the wrong time can lead to gaining fat.

Apparently, we all need to understand how carbs are broken down in our bodies so then we can decide what times are wrong and right to each fruit.

While speaking to the Mail Online, Callum explains that when you consume carbohydrates, they are stored in two forms – either muscle glycogen or liver glycogen.

"The thing people forget or just don't understand when it comes to food in general, let alone fruit, is that food is fuel and we should only eat what is required to fuel our daily energy requirements, especially when it comes to carbohydrate intake."

And one of the biggest mistakes, Callum says, is when people eat fruit after a workout.

"Fruit will only replenish liver glycogen and not muscle glycogen.

"Glycogen is our muscle's fuel source and will be used during exercise and therefore needs to be replenished afterwards with starchy carbohydrates such as rice and potatoes."

And as for when we all should eat fruit?

"We want to ensure that when we eat fruit we will maximise the energy we receive from it, but more importantly ensure that the fructose is used by the body as an energy source and doesn't get converted and stored as body fat," Callum explains.

"Therefore, the best time to eat fruit is first thing in the morning and 15 minutes before a workout as your body will use this readily available energy to fuel morning activity and then your exercise."

So, there you go ladies, be careful with your fruit.

The nasty divorce between Amber Heard and Johnny Depp is finally over, and it looks like Amber is totally ready to move on with her life.

Speaking to TMZ, the actress said that she's going to give all of the money that she received in the divorce to not one, but two charities.

"The donation will be divided equally between the ACLU, with a particular focus to stop violence against women, and the Children's Hospital of Los Angeles, where I have worked as a volunteer for the past ten years," Amber explained.

While speaking to the site, she also said that it wasn't about the money in the first place.

"Money played no role for me personally and never has, except to the extent that I could donate it to charity and, in doing so, hopefully help those less able to defend themselves."

Amber added, "Hopefully this experience results in a positive change in the lives of people who need it the most."

Jesy Nelson and Jake Roche are possibly one of the cutest celeb couples out there at the moment.

The soon-to-be-wed pair are taking some time out together now since Little Mix have stopped touring for their 'summer holidays'.

However, Jesy shared a photo on Instagram and three weeks later (yes, three weeks) it's after confusing ALL of her fans.

Posting a black and white shot of Jake with a baby, Jesy captioned it: "My two favourite boys."

And… there was meltdown. One fan started to freak out, and it snowballed into every fan freaking out.

Comments included: "When you have a baby??" "They have a baby together or what?" and: "JESY HAD A KID!!!!!???? I NEVER KNEW."

Obviously no, it's not Jesy's baby (we're presuming it's a family member's).

Luckily for the singer, other fans were there to explain the misunderstanding. One wrote: "Are you serious?? When you see Jesy pregnant??" while another said: "It’s not her son."

There’s something about those videos of runway models wobbling in skyscraper heels that many people find endlessly entertaining.

For some, it’s just another case of guilty amusement at another human being’s expense; but for critics of the industry, it’s hearty delight over the ‘vindication’ that some trends are, in fact, just plain old ridiculous.

Something that I have come to learn over the years is that this conflict is at the very heart of fashion and personal style. So, while some people sneered and hid their smirks while I strutted around in my seven-inch Jeffrey Campbell ‘Lita’ platforms, I held my head high and remembered that footwear resembling correctional shoes weren’t everyone’s cup of tea.

Similarly, while some people rolled their eyes over the ‘backwards’ trend that emerged during London Fashion Week earlier this year, I decided to reserve judgement until I gave the look a go myself.

I had plenty of inspiration too: my Instagram feed was chock-a-block with photos of esteemed editors and street-style stars experimenting with the trend, each one managing to somehow look amazing in their back-to-front blouses.

With British Vogue pushing the trend in its September issue – even extending the look to include everything from jackets to jumpers – I figured it was FINALLY time to put my own stamp on it.

Here’s how I got on…

Look 1

If my Vogue favourite Naomi Smart is rocking a backwards shirt, then I’m all over it. While this was the central look in my experiment, it turned out to be the most disappointing. From the front, it just looked like I was wearing a straightjacket; and from the back, it was just all a bit, well, meh.

With a different shirt – possibly buttoned all the way down – I might have liked this look a little better.

Look 2

Sometimes it’s the afterthought that winds up being the winner, and this was definitely the case with this kimono. I literally grabbed it as I was heading out the door, thinking it would either look amazing or awful.

I was pleasantly surprised to find that not only did my backwards kimono look really cool from the rear, but the belt ensured it didn’t look like a sloppy mess at the front.

Look 3

Back detail is major this season, with delicate embroidery popping up all over bomber and Letterman jackets. Rather than shell out more money investing in yet MORE clothing, I reckoned I could work this look with one of my very favourite pieces: my Kenzo sweater.

That tiger detail looked way better when it wasn’t broken up by my boobs, and I was pleasantly surprised by how well the sweater fit backwards – that’s good quality for you, people!

While many of you may find this trend utterly ridiculous, maybe the topsy-turvy look will float your boat. Either way, a little experimentation is always fun, and won’t hurt anyone – it may even give a whole new lease of life to a much-neglected wardrobe basic.

While southern parts of the United States are currently contending with the implications of recent floods, it looks like the carefree attitude of one young boy in Baton Rouge has done much to raise the spirits of countless residents.

Appearing behind a news correspondent reporting on the issue, the youngster can be seen throwing some serious shapes, and social media users have really taken him to their hearts.

In a move not often seen during live broadcasts, neither the correspondent nor the cameraman requested that the child remove himself from the shot, but instead treated viewers to almost two minutes of some pretty slick moves.

Uploading the footage to Facebook, WMC Action News 5 paid tribute to the child and drew on the words of one Baton Rouge resident when captioning the video.

"Perhaps a man in Baton Rouge summed it up best when he posted this clip to his own Facebook page, "Was feeling kind of down, then he popped up on my screen and reminded me that no matter what you're going through to just keep on smiling and dancing," they wrote.

"Something's wrong if you didn't just love this kid. I'm in the midst of this historic flood and I loved him," wrote one Facebook user while another insisted: "I'm sorry but not only is he bringing joy but he's bringing a sense of strength to a bad situation."

"I'm working on getting a tractor trailer of goods to the area to help and this kid brought a smile to push me harder to make that happen," they added.

Watch this, and try not to crack a smile…

Comedy act, Foil Arms and Hog, recently released a video which suggested that when it comes to planning a holiday, us Irish folk have a seriously hard time making a decision.

And, if a recent survey from 123.ie is anything to go by, the lads weren't far off the mark at all.

According to findings, the biggest issues affecting Irish holiday-makers is the importance of risk assessment, the threat of terror,  the fear of missing a flight or losing our luggage and the idea we'd be denied a cup of tea upon arrival. (No, seriously)

With the shocking implications of terrorism never far from the headlines, it's no surprise that 80% of holiday-makers from Ireland will avoid travelling to a region they believe may be vulnerable to terrorist attack.

Of the 771 individuals surveyed, 94% cited France as the country most at risk from terrorism, with Turkey and Tunisia also ranked highly at 91% and 87% respectively.

Head of Marketing with 123.ie, Padraig O’Neill, commented on the results, saying: "People’s views are obviously influenced by recent attacks in Turkey and last year’s attacks in Paris and Sousse and this has been reflected in their responses, which is totally understandable."

Further to this, the survey indicates that the Irish public take health risks into account when planning a vacation, with India and Brazil heading up the list as countries which pose the greatest danger.

"We anticipated that Brazil might feature on the list given the recent outbreak of the  Zika Virus and the ensuing publicity surrounding golfers including Rory McIlroy, Shane Lowry and their decision not to take part in the Rio Olympics," Padraig explained.

"Despite the fact that pregnant women is the group most at risk from the Zika Virus, the  global publicity may have contributed to heightened concerns that has been borne out in the research."

And while we may relish the devil-may-care attitude attributed to us by the wider world, us Irish are actually a conscientious bunch, with four out of five respondents buying travel insurance in case of medical emergencies.

Remarking on the result, Padraig asserted: "We know that people place a high value on their travel insurance.  It offers great peace of mind and it’s one of those things that you can purchase and not think about again as you never need it, until you need it."

And after factoring in terrorism and travel insurance, us Irish turn our attention to a possible tea shortage while living it up abroad.

So great is the concern, a staggering 57% of holiday-makers from Ireland actually take their preferred brand of tea with them on a foreign trip.

And a further 14% insist that the first thing they do after landing is seek out a cup of the hot stuff.

Yeah, that sounds about right.
