The horse racing season is well underway, launching a long summer of outdoor occasion dressing ahead of us. Follow these race day attire tips to ensure your odds are through the roof this season.

Dress accordingly for the occasion and the weather
Remember, you’ll be outside for most of the day, not hitting a nightclub. Don’t have your skirt too short, heels you can’t walk in and the too much flesh on display.  Race festival fashion should be more demure than disco.

Balance your outfit
If you’re going all out with a flamboyant hat, keep the rest of your outfit understated.

Accessorise, accessorise, accessorise
A day at the races is all about having fun with your outfit and accessorising is a must.  Bags, heels and hats are the staple pieces that should complement the outfit to get that polished look.

Solid colours
Block colours make for a dynamic, confident look that’s perfect for the races. Alternatively, monochrome, the staple style for the Belmont Stakes in New York, can leave a lasting impression. Pair monochrome outfits with a bold red lip and small clutch for a dynamic overall look.

The word ‘vegan’ is a dirty word for many foodies but a recipe free of animal products doesn’t have to be free of flavour too.

This recipe for vanilla poached peaches is the perfect, vegan dessert for a lazy, early spring Sunday.

What you’ll need

  • 4 large, ripe peaches
  • 425ml sweet white wine
  • 2 tbsp agave
  • 1 vanilla pod, split

What you’ll need to do

  1. Fill a large bowl with iced water.
  2. Place the peaches in another large bowl and pour over enough boiling water to cover.
  3. Leave for 30 seconds, then remove the peaches with a spoon and plunge them into the cold water. The skins should peel away easily.
  4. Place the wine. agave and vanilla pod in a pan, gently heat until the agave has dissolved.
  5. Lower the peaches into the pan, cover and simmer gently for 15-20 minutes until tender. Using two wooden spoons, turn the fruit 3 or 4 times while cooking and regularly baste with the syrup.
  6. Remove the cooked peaches from the pan and set to one side in a large bowl.
  7. Boil the syrup until it has reduced by half. Spoon over the peaches, then set aside to cool. Serve the peaches and syrup at room temperature, warm or chilled.

This cute dog got a little impatient waiting for his owner to run his errands so he took matters into his own paws.

It makes you go weak at the knees, squeal with delight and secretly long for a similar smooch with your significant other. It’s the best big kisses on the silver screen.

The Notebook
The chemistry between Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling in The Notebook was electric resulting in a kiss that would make your toes curl. The rain-soaked smooch between Allie and Noah is one we’ve always yearned to recreate (preferably with Gosling himself).

Lady and the Tramp
Even the biggest cynic would melt the moment the Lady and the Tramp share their first kiss at the end of a string of spaghetti in this magical Disney movie.

Ghost
Who knew that the power of a kiss could make a past-time of the retired sexy, as Patrick Swayze interrupts Demi Moore’s pottery session with a steamy, late-night rendez-vous.

The Quiet Man
Hollywood director Martin Scorsese has dubbed the passionate kiss between Maureen O’Hara and John Wayne in The Quiet Man as one of the best onscreen kisses in cinematic history. The chemistry between the flamed-hair siren Mary Kate Danaher and super-manly Sean Thorton when they kiss during a storm, would stand up to any modern-day movie.

Titanic
The sunset smooch between Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet to Celine Dion’s most romantic hit My Heart Will Go On showed that their love was unsinkable, even if the ship wasn’t.

Hannibal Lector would be a picnic to live with compared to this lot.

The Flirt
She’ll parade around in her scantiest outfits when your boyfriend visits, she does yoga stretches in the middle of the living room when your brother is staying for the weekend and she hits on your best mate’s boyfriend on nights out. Nobody is safe with ‘The Flirt’.

The Slob
She’ll forget to flush, leaving nasty surprises in the toilet bowl, she’ll cut her toenails in the kitchen and laughs when the clippings land in your cereal and doesn’t flinch when the pans she left in the sink for days have grown beards.

The Couple
You only ever recall moving in with one person but find yourself now sharing with two – your roommate and her boyfriend. They’re not shy of PDAs when you’re sharing a sofa, they keep you awake at night with their Oscar-worthy arguments and worse yet, the making up after.

The Copy Cat
She’ll copy your style, love/hate the same things you do and turn up in the same places you said you’d be. Be afraid, be very afraid.

Spring has sprung and yet the thought of exposing bare flesh to the public after months of winter woollies is bringing tears to your eyes.

If you’re finished with faking it and tempted to turn to sunbeds this year before holiday season kicks off, first consider the many dangers associated with sunbed use.

The Irish Cancer Society has warned that using a sunbed is not a safer way than the sun when getting a tan. It exposes your skin to UVA and UVB rays that damage your skin cells and can lead to skin cancer.

The sunbed industry in Ireland is not regulated and no safeguards are in place to protect those most vulnerable to UV damage that could lead to skin cancer.

The amount of UV radiation you get from a sunbed can be as much as 15 times higher than what you would get from the midday Mediterranean sun.

Research tells us that people who have used a sunbed, even just once, have a 15% increased risk of melanoma.

If you first use a sunbed before you were 30 years of age, your risk of getting melanoma is increased by 75%.

If you use a sunbed once a month or more, your risk of skin cancer may be increased by more than half.

Although only a few years apart, there is a world of difference between how we like to let our hair down at 18 and 25.

Where to party

  • At 18: Your parents are away for the weekend and have entrusted you to look after the house (and the booze cabinet) unsupervised. Jackpot!
  • At 25: You are a confident and sophisticated 20-something and are ready to grace the bar and club scene with vigour. After those never-ending awkward teen years, the novelty of adult conversation and overpriced Chardonnay is a thrill.

Getting ready

  • At 18: You’ll start to get ready for the night out at around 2pm that day. You’ll assemble with friends to discuss many, many outfits and hairdos, going through a landslide of selfies and a gallon of lip-gloss while agonising over whether or not your ‘crush du jour’ will show up.
  • At 25: Party prep in your more calm and collected 20s is less flustered than your teen years. You know what suits you and what really doesn’t, what looks to avoid and what to flaunt. You can also probably afford your own outfits by now and don’t have to wait until your sister/flatmate goes out in order to pillage her wardrobe.

The morning after

  • At 18: You’ve partied ‘til dawn and are still feeling fresh enough to make it in time for that lecture or part-time job. Hangover who?
  • At 25: Never again…

We’re not sure why people STILL fall for this, but we are glad they do!

Jimmy Kimmel’s SXSW round of Lie Witness News shows people yet again pretending to know of bands that don’t exist.

This time the band names are even more ridiculous with “I’m Not Done With The Salad”, “What the F*** Bruce Jenner” and “King Joffrey”.

The answers are just too funny.

Up until now, the cosmetic procedures used to remove wrinkles have had temporary side effects. However, new research shows that cosmetic fillers can now cause irreversible damage.

U.S scientist found that injections of fat and collagen into the forehead can lead to permanent blindness when fillers get into the blood vessels.

According to Dr. Michelle Carle from Los Angeles, complication during a procedure like this is very rare, but also ‘very significant’.

Dr Carle and her team studied three cases of patients who were left with impaired vision after treatment. In these cases, the injections interfered with the blood supply to the patients’ eye artery.

“We recommend that blindness or significant visual loss be added as a risk when discussing these procedures with patients, because these are devastating consequences,” she said.

There are also reports of patience suffering a stroke and even dying after cosmetic procedures.
