Asa much as we love our family, sometimes Christmas Day can become a little overwhelming. Here are some things that might help you get through it to Stephen’s Day when you can hopefully emerge unscathed.

Chocolate
Chocolate releases endorphins, making you feel happy. Stack up on Roses, selection boxes and Chocolate Kimberley to keep your good mood up even when your brother keeps hitting you with his new pellet gun.

Batteries
Trying to watch TV with your nan is literally impossible. Make sure you don’t miss any of the good bits as she tells you all about Paddy’s daughter Sheila who’s rolling in the dough over in Dubai by ensuring your remote has fresh batteries. This way you can record and pause anything you need. Yay for technology!

Back-up food
There’s a chance your mom might forget to put the turkey in the oven (again) and get dirty looks off your granny all day (again) so why not help the woman out and grab a roast chicken the day before just in case.

Double layered biscuit tins ONLY
Are you trying to cause a riot? On that note, move all of the biscuit tins that have been retired to sewing kits out of sight to avoid that horrible sinking feeling.

Christmas movies
Have a stack of Christmas movies ready and waiting to start the exciting day ahead. Unless you want to be stuck watching Puss In Boots.

Much as we love our families, being in the presence of our parents non-stop for all of Christmas week can get a little exhausting.

Helen Rahily, a former Director of TV at RTÉ, is home from London for Christmas and the Irish Mammy Experience is already getting to be a bit too much for her.

Luckily she's decided to share all of her 88-year-old mammy's wise words with us via Twitter.

From blunt honesty:

To complaining about the price of things these days:

Not to mention the inevitable guilt trip:

Followed by another one:

Ah, family.

It can be hard to resist the temptation of the dessert table, especially if you have a sweet tooth.

But if you're watching your waistline this year, there are some healthier dessert choices that could even help you along your diet journey.

Here are a few less calorific options to see you through the festive season…

1. Fruit Sorbet
Sorbet is fat-free and is a great alternative to ice cream – the good quality ones taste just as smooth and creamy! If you have an ice-cream maker you can make your own, which gives you the additional advantage of being able to control the amount of sugar that goes in.

2. Baked stuffed fruit
Pears and peaches make a delicious and wintry dessert when baked and stuffed with things like chopped pistachios, almonds, dried apricots and dried cranberries. Simply cut the fruit in half and cut out a section (or for peaches, remove the stone), fill with the nuts and dried fruit of your choice and bake in the oven until brown and bubbling. Sweet, tangy and low in calories!

3. Fruit mousse topped with berries
A mousse is a deliciously decadent dessert that won't pack in the calories, especially if you go for a low-fat option!

4. Frozen yoghurt with fruit and nut toppings
Frozen yoghurt isn't as virtuous as you might think, but a small serving of plain fro-yo is still a healthier alternative to ice-cream. Go for fruit and nut toppings that are infinitely healthier than chocolate and cheesecake ones!

5. Nutella yoghurt Dip with fruit
Who can say no to chocolate? For a healthier alternative to sugary chocolate or fudge sauce, mix some Nutella with Greek yoghurt and use it as a delicious dipping sauce for strawberries. YUM.

Veteran singer Madonna ruffled more than a few feathers recently when she claimed that the leak of her recent album was ’artistic rape’, but the star, who holds the record for most number ones on all Billboard Charts, hasn’t done much to remedy the delicate situation since she first made the remarks.

When the singer was asked to retract these comments, the controversial 56-year-old star said: “I’m an artistic person. I’m very expressive. I’m sorry if words alarm people, but that’s what it felt like. It was not a consensual agreement.” In other words, she didn’t take them back.

The Vogue singer has claimed to be living in a state of terror since her material appeared online without her consent, saying: “Obviously there is a person, or a group of people behind this that were essentially terrorising me. I don’t want to sound alarming, but certainly that’s how I felt.”

We understand that the situation must have been frightening for the singer, especially since she believes the leak originated from her own computer, but perhaps a woman with as much influence as Madonna should choose her words a lot more carefully in the future.

Who the hell has the nerve to block Hollywood royalty, Meryl Streep, out of a selfie…for the second time?! Emily Blunt and Anna Kendrick, that’s who!

The three gorgeous actresses appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show where they discussed the famous Oscar selfie which pretty much broke the internet (Sorry, Kim!) and poor old Meryl opened up about how disappointed she was that she barely featured in it.

Ellen backed up Meryl and said: “The whole idea was I was going to get a selfie with Meryl and then everybody else jumped in and Meryl was barely in the selfie!”

So, in a bid to make it up to The Devil Wears Prada star, the ever-hilarious Ellen huddled in with the three ladies and posed, but mischievous Emily and Anna couldn’t resist the opportunity to wind up Meryl and the pair blocked that Oscar-winner out of the snap like two bold kids!

Upon showing the selfie to the audience, Meryl pretended to be annoyed before breaking into gales of laughter and posing for yet another shot. Third time lucky, perhaps?!

Girls, could we actually love her any more?!

With so many health and fitness plans out there all about listening to your body and ignoring the scales, it's surprising to hear that weighing yourself regularly could actually be beneficial.

A recent study published by the Public Library of Science showed that people who weighed themselves more frequently while dieting appeared to drop more pounds. The study tracked the daily habits of 40 overweight adults who were trying to lose weight, taking note of how many pounds they dropped during the study and how often they stepped on the scales.

Those who checked their weight more often actually slimmed down more than those who left it more than a week to do so.

Of course, stepping on the scales is not going to aid your body's fat-burning capabilities (we wish), but by frequently tracking your weight you are more likely to make healthier choices to keep things in check.

While it might seem like a great idea to check your weight once or even twice a day, it's important to remember that our weight can fluctuate by around 3 – 5 pounds depending on what time of the day we weigh ourselves, where we are in our menstrual cycle, and if we have eaten any high salt foods which can cause water retention.

If you do plan on checking your weight daily, to jump on the scales at the same time every day, so that you have a regular benchmark by which to track your weight changes.

Who doesn’t love a spontaneous festive proposal?! No one, that’s who!

So, massive props to Jonathan Carroll for making our day and indulging our romantic side by proposing to his girlfriend at Dublin airport.

Jonathan is currently living in the US and in a very happy relationship with his American girlfriend Mary Francis Turner.

The pair are so happy in fact, that Jonathan decided to ask the lovely Mary to be his wife live on Ryan Tubridy’s 2fm show which was being recorded in the airport!

Upon arriving in Dublin to visit her other half’s family for the festive season, Mary was met by Jonathan who got down on one knee and said: “Mary, I love you so much and it would mean the world to me if you would marry me.” Stop, we can’t cope!

Organised Jonathan had even done the traditional thing and asked Mary’s mother’s permission before the big proposal.

An overjoyed Mary said she was ‘overwhelmed’ and her shocked initial response to the big question was: “No. I mean yeah!”

We think there’ll be some serious celebrating in the Carroll household tonight!

It's been a big year for Kim Kardashian – from a blockbuster wedding to an internet-breaking bum – and she's rounding things off nicely with a very sexy photoshoot!

Kim and husband Kanye posted for Balmain's spring 2014 campaign as a couple, and the lead shot is this very steamy kiss, which Kim posted on her Instagram page yesterday:

The photo was simply captioned, "BALMAIN!!!" …so we're guessing she is excited!

Balmain's creative director Olivier Rousteing also joined in the hype, posting close-up zoomed in shots of both Kim and Kanye shortly beforehand:

Kim's always been a fan of the label, even wearing one of their dresses for her hen party, an incredible jewel -encrusted high-necked minidress that reportedly cost a cool $20,000.

Now that she and Kanye are the face of the label, we can expect a few more dresses like that one!

Kate Hudson and Matt Bellamy may have only announced their plans to break-up weeks ago, but it looks like they remain firm friends after they were spotted together in recent days.

The pair were seen enjoying a family trip to Aspen in Colorado, which is a tradition they have upheld every year, and it looks like even a split won’t change that! Kate and Matt were spotted doing some Christmas shopping together before going for a coffee.

However, for those of you who may be hoping for a reconciliation for the famous couple, Kate’s ring finger remained blatantly bare, meaning that if there is a chance they are getting back together – they’re certainly not going to tell us yet!

It’s lovely to see that they can still enjoy important family holidays together though! Kate and Matt were together for four years and have one child together, Bingham (3). Kate also has a ten-year-old son, Ryder, from her marriage to Chris Robinson.

Reese Witherspoon has not spoken much about her divorce from Ryan Phillipe in 2006 but now, in a rare interview, she has opened up about their painful split.

The actress, who stars in Wild – which comes to Irish cinemas in January – spoke to 60 Minutes about her divorce, saying she spent a lot of time crying afterwards: “I lay on the kitchen floor and cried a lot and I think at a certain point you just wake up and you’re like, ‘OK, I don’t want to feel like this anymore.’ And you figure your own sh** out.”

Reese also opened up honestly about the effect her divorce from the father of her two children had on her career, only one year after winning the Oscar for Best Actress in 2006 for her role in Walk The Line: “Phew, that was a tough year that followed. I got divorced the next year and I spent a few years just trying to feel better. You know, you can’t really be creative when you feel like your brain is scrambled eggs.”

She was left heartbroken when she discovered herself in a list of “washed-up” celebrities in a 2012 New Yorker piece: “I thought I was reading a profile on another actor, and somewhere at the end it said, you know, the people that are washed up, and at the end of it included me, Tom Hanks, Mel Gibson. It really hurt my feelings, really hurt my feelings.”

Thankfully, the actress’ career is back on the rise with rave reviews for her behind-the-scenes input on David Fincher’s Gone Girl, as well as taking on the lead role in Wild

Reese is now married to Jim Toth with whom she has a son, Tennessee, as well as being a mum to 15-year-old Ava and 12-year-old Deacon with ex-husband Ryan Phillipe.
