Growing numbers of LGBT people are choosing to 'come out' to friends and family on social media.

This news comes from the LGBT Helpline, the national support service for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender people in Ireland.

Speaking at an LGBT Helpline event, Paula Fagan, National Coordinator of the LGBT Helpline, said the experience of coming out has changed significantly as a result of digital communications.

'In the past, coming out tended to be a very personal experience, where you opened up about your sexuality to a small number of trusted family members or friends,' she said.

'And while people are still careful about who they tell when they are first coming out, once they feel more comfortable about their sexuality, more and more people are choosing social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter as a way of telling other family members, friends and their wider social circles.'

'We’re seeing that most people receive a lot of positive affirmation after coming out online.'

'They find it a reassuring experience, with social media often helping them to feel less isolated and allowing them to tap into extensive online support networks.'

'But it is a big step, so we do encourage people to think about it carefully and consider what supports they have offline, in particular who they can talk to if they do not get the reaction they are hoping for.'

The event focused on the role of the internet in the lives of LGBT people, and how, while it can be used as a tool for those building confidence in their identity, it can be used negatively by those who seek to cyberbully members of the community.

'Undoubtedly, the internet has brought much good, 'said Helen McEntee, Minister of State for Mental Health.

'However, it has also introduced new pressures and new ways for people to scrutinise, judge and criticise each other,'

Move over rainbow flags, The Babadook is the new symbol of the LGBTQ community.

The ghoulish demon has become somewhat of a gay icon this month after a number of memes showing the character standing in front of a rainbow background went viral.

The Babadook is a character at the centre of the 2014 horror film of the same name, who comes to life in the form of a children's pop-up book.

But how did this unusual character become the face of Pride 2017 we hear you ask?

Well, it all dates back to last October when a photo showing the horror film listed under the LGBT section on Netflix, circulated online.

And with the arrival of June, widely recognised as LGBTQ Pride month, The Babadook memes are back once again

Of course, Twitter is loving it.

First Dates has become an Irish institution, and between the Twitter banter and the actual show, we're officially hooked.

Usually, the show leaves us cringing, but last nights episode had a little something extra that made the cringe worth sitting through.

Carol, from Glasnevin opened up about how the Marriage Equality Referendum completely changed her life, and inspired her to be herself.

“I’d been spending too much time in the Porterhouse and not enough time in The George,” she chuckled, calling 2015's marriage referendum “life-changing.”

Carol was paired with the very retro and glamorous EJ, short for Elizabeth-Jane, and while the pair instantly hit it off over a whiskey sour, they unfortunately didn't feel the sparks and declined to go on a second date.

However, the potential couple reminded us of how amazing and positive the effects of the marriage referendum had on the LGBTQ community.

Oh, and while we have you; don't forget to have your say in the inaugural SHEmazing Awards this May! It's time to vote, and you can do it right here!

Same sex marriage has only been legal in Ireland for about 14 months, so celebrating inclusive campaigns like Lush's new Valentine's Day photo set is a must.

Lush is known for being progressive in its business ethics and for its support of the LGBTQ community, after the brand came out with a "Gay is Ok" bath product last year.

The new campaign is super cute and showcases two queer couples just doing their thing while being in love.

The male couple are shown enjoying a cuddle and a soak in a pink tinted bath, a simple way to add a splash of diversity to the usually heteronormative Valentine's Day conversation.

A lesbian couple are shown having a bubble bath, complete with bubble beard.

Campaigns like this help to normalise the concept of LGBTQ relationships and seeing homosexual couples on a commercial platform shows the progress society has made when it comes to being accepting of all sexualities, making them super important for the community.

Lush have tagged all of their Valentine's social media postings with the hashtag #LoveIsLove.

Keep doing you Lush.

Whether you happen to have a penis or a vagina, many of us would be relatively familiar with both.

Unless, you happened to know from an early age that you were in fact not straight.

In a bizarre but utterly sweet and amusing YouTube series, Vloggers Bria and Chrissy decide to do a little social experiment in which they ask gay and lesbian men and women to touch a vagina or a penis for the first time.

It is definitely a bizarre video to watch strangers getting pretty intimate with each other, but the reactions are hilarious and probably not what you would expect.

In the first video, three girls are pretty much terrified at the though touch of touching a penis with one literally commenting that she's "shaking."

Meanwhile the second video, one gay man literally screams his head off at the sight of a woman's downstairs area and another compares it to a "deflated balloon".

One simply expected it to be "hairier."

President Obama has referred to Caitlyn Jenner in a speech that was recorded for Logo’s Trailblazer Honors in New York City.

Logo is a television network that celebrates one-of-a-kind personalities and unconventional stories. Their aim is to achieve this “all through a mix of original and acquired entertainment that’s outrageous, smart, and inclusive.”

The Trailblazer Honors ceremony is to honour LGBT people around the world and the victims of those who have suffered from homophobic abuse.  The ceremony, which airs tomorrow, will also host celebrity speakers including Miley Cyrus, Kelly Osbourne, Sir Ian McKellan, Martin Luther King III, and more.

In his speech President Obama said that “tonight is a chance to celebrate, not just ten years of Logo, but ten years of extraordinary progress for our country.

“When this network aired its first show, gay marriage was a political wedge issue used to divide us. Today the majority of Americans live in states where they can get married, no matter who they love.

“And all you have to do is look at this month’s cover of Vanity Fair to see how America is more accepting of people for who they truly are,” he said referring to Ms Jenner's recent issue of the magazine.

Since Caitlyn’s transition, she has become an icon for transgender people around the world. With all eyes on her, she has become the most famous person to openly undergo the gender transition process in the public eye.

President Obama was in the middle of giving a speech honouring LGBTQ Pride Month when he was heckled by a member of the crowd.

The US President tried to ask the heckler to stop interrupting him and when the person wouldn’t listen Obama pointed out, “you’re in my house,” which prompted a big cheer from the crowd.

The audience was clearly on Obama’s side throughout the altercation as they booed the heckler and began a chant, shouting “O-bam-a.”

The President even declared that, “As a general rule I am just fine with a few hecklers… But not when I’m up in the house,” which again warranted a huge laugh from the crowd and a slap on the back from Vice President, Joe Biden.

Following the incident, an immigration group claimed that the protestor was an undocumented transgender who advocates for LGBTQ immigrants. The group says that LGBTQ immigrants are often excluded from the immigration debate.

While Obama has received his fair share of hecklers in his time, it is a rare occurrence in the White House. As he said, if the guests are “eating the hors d’oeuvres and drinking the booze,” they are usually expected to be respectful and listen.

To celebrate Valentine’s Day, Lush Cosmetics will be standing up for everyone’s right to love.

In partnership with All Out, Lush will be promoting the campaign for Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender & Queer (LGBTQ) rights.

The campaign is to coincide with the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, where new anti-gay laws have created a massive surge in anti-gay violence within the country.

Lush shop windows are saying, ‘We believe in love’, and staff are asking all of their customers to show solidarity by painting a pink triangle on their body to share their #SignofLove

The pink triangle, which was first used by the Nazis as a badge to mark and identify gay people in concentration camps, has been turned on its head and is now seen as a global sign of LGBTQ rights.

Tamsin Omond, head of Lush Campaigns, says: “Valentine’s Day is the perfect time to stand up for everyone’s right for love.”
