late late show

Happy Friday everyone.

We've made it through another week and its time to put the feet up and relax in front of – what else? – the Late Late.

This weeks array of guests is a great mix and fans of the Eurovision are in for a treat.

First up, TV star  Baz Ashmawy will join Tubs to talk all things about his new show where he helps participants to embark on a journey of discovery to achieve something they wouldn’t have thought was possible.

Baz will tell the unlikely story of dairy farmer Jimmy Byrne from Louth (among others), who wants to put on a play when nobody is taking him seriously.

As well as that, the Benhaffaf twins, Hassan and Hussein, made international headlines this week after Hollywood actor Tom Hanks sent them a personalised Toy Story video.

They will be on the show to talk about how they felt when they saw the message, and we’re also joined by Míceál O'Hurley who reached out to Tom Hanks to organise the surprise.

We will also hear the story of Colette Ryan, who was just two years old when she disappeared while on holiday with her family 44 years ago, from the then Mosney holiday camp in Co Meath.

World Autism Day is this month and to celebrate, we’ll also be meeting Nicholas Ryan Purcell who is a budding filmmaker with Asperger syndrome, and Ryan will be joined by three mothers and their three children to discuss the realities of living with autism.

Legendary singer and songwriter Rod Stewart, Bataclan survivors Katie Healy and David Nolan and cervical cancer campaigner Laura Brennan lead the line-up for this Friday’s Late Late Show.

In an emotional interview with host Ryan Tubridy, Rod Stewart reflects on family, fame and fortune and discusses why Irish ballad Grace means so much to him.

In November 2015, Katie Healy and David Nolan survived a terror attack at the Bataclan theatre in Paris which claimed the lives of 90 people.

A month later David proposed, and the couple went on to welcome a beautiful daughter in to their lives in 2016. Last December, they received news that no parent wants to hear, and the couple join Ryan to discuss their daughter’s life changing diagnosis.

We’ll also meet Keeva Delaney, the girl who has written a book to raise funds for Cliona’s Foundation, a charity providing much needed funding to parents of children with life limiting conditions.

Earlier this week the HSE confirmed that the uptake of the HPV vaccine has reached 70 per cent, and cervical cancer campaigner Laura Brennan has been front and centre to advocate for the vaccine. We talk to Laura about what the rise in uptake means to her, and we hear about the impact that the campaign has had on teenage girls.

He brought us Irish Mammies, and now author Colm O'Regan is back with a new book: Ann Devine, Ready For Her Close-Up. Colm joins Ryan to discuss what makes the Irish Mammy such a treasured part of our national identity, and why he’s decided to make one the centre point for his first outing as a novelist.

We’ll also be taking a look back at some of Ireland’s most iconic ads, and catching up with actor Joe McKinney 25 years on from dancing in that Guinness ad.

Music will be from James Morrison and we’ll have a performance by Rhythm of the Dance.

Tonight’s The Late Late Show has an amazing lineup, and we cannot wait to watch it.

Appearances will be made by Fianna Fail leader Micheal Martin, Supervet Noel Fitzpatrick, and our favourite – authors Emer McLysaght and Sarah Breen.

The two women are most known for writing Oh My God, What a Complete Aisling.

The hilarious Irish best-selling novel has quickly climbed the charts and is definitely a must-read.

It tells the story of 28-year-old Aisling who lives at home in Ballygobbard with her parents.

The young woman finds familiarity in her routine, commuting to her dependable job in Dublin and staying at her long-time boyfriend’s house twice a week.

But eventually, Aisling gets tired of waiting for him to put a ring on it. And that’s when everything changes in her comedic story.

And now the heartwarming story is in the process of being made into a film.

Taking to Twitter, writers, Emer McLysaght and Sarah Breen announced that Element Pictures have acquired the film rights.

The authors are thrilled to be bringing their dream to the big screens.

Emer and Sarah have climbed to fame since their popular novel’s release, and they live to entertain.

“We’ve known this character for ten years so to be given the opportunity to take her from the pages of our beloved book and transform her into a walking, talking, caring (and judging, let’s be honest) girl in front of a camera is beyond our wildest dreams. We can’t wait to start!”

It has been seven months since the big announcement and we’re sure the girls will have plenty to share.

Hopefully, the amusing duo will be able to give us some insights into the film, including an official release date.

Also, make sure to check out their latest book: The Importance of Being Aisling, which is now available in stores.

In what will be Ibrahim Halawa's first big television interview since returning to Ireland last week, the ex-prisoner has announced that he will appear on this Friday's Late Late Show.

The 21-year-old, who was released last month, had spent four years in an Egyptian jail after he was arrested during a Muslim Brotherhood demonstration in Cairo in 2013.

The Firhouse native, who was just 17-years-old at the time, was among hundreds of protestors who were arrested at the demonstration.

Ibrahim's trail was famously adjourned 25 times before he was eventually acquitted of all charges.

Taking to Facebook yesterday, he told his friends to “stay tuned” to hear his story.

The post has been liked over 250 times and people have been leaving the Dubliner messages of support ahead of the appearance.

“Will be watching from Australia on RTÉ player!,” one person wrote.

Another said: “Wish you luck on the show Ibrahim. It's a good thing to do and the injustice that was done to you should be heard by everyone.”

This week's Late Late Show will also feature a pre-recorded interview with Conor McGregor, during which the MMA star issues an apology after he was slammed for using a homophobic slur in a viral video.

Last Friday, The Late Late Show held a Valentine's Day special… which received hundreds of complaints.

The format of the show saw singletons in the audience being paired up, as well as Al Porter and Linda Martin perform a musical number together.

Cringey to say the least, but that's what happens when Irish people and love mix.

But now, Ryan Tubridy has hit back at the haters, saying "the headlines bely the success of [the] show.

"The show actually went down very well and it got 46 percent share which is enormous and which is a very, very good result indeed," he told his RTE Radio 1 listeners.

"Yes of course a number of people complained but actually bigger numbers watched it and seemed to enjoy it and the story that seems to have emerged from that programme is that, well to me, it's a tale of two Irelands.

"One Ireland is full of under 50s who thought it was a hoot and another Ireland full of over 50s who thought a little less of it in that sense."

He went on to say that everyone has their preferences, and the whole nation won't always like the same thing.

"The bottom line is we do 37 Late Late shows in a season, one we go bananas and that was Friday night and it was great fun.

"In another we play with toys and we act like children and that goes down very well indeed.

"And another one coming up down the tracks will be the country show and some people will hate that because they don't like country and some people will love it because they love country," he added.
