Anyone who has seen even a second of reality television this side of the millennium will be aware that straight, whitened teeth are at the heart of society's idea of a perfect smile.

We've got a hell of a long way to go if we want to dismantle the layers of beauty standards. Gucci are making an effort, at least, with their latest campaign.

The luxury brand are the first major company to champion different kinds of teeth in its latest lipstick campaign, though not the first to advocate gap-toothed grins.

Ads need to go much further to represent the people who they sell the actual goods to. The smile is a milestone, undoubtedly, yet the image has made some people online uncomfortable.

The 'Rouge à Lèvres Satin' collection from a new Gucci Beauty line was ideated by the brilliant Alessandro Michele, who subverts the norms though the lens of imperfection.

The shoot promotes the relaunched line, and has garnered media coverage through it's attempt to push the public to accept the polarising nature of imperfect teeth.

"For the bold, the bright and the beautiful," is the tag-line on the image, one of a series of close-ups shot by Martin Parr. The campaign features models Mae Lapres , Achok Majak and Ellia Sophia alongside Surfbort frontwoman Dani Miller.

Society has become far too adapted to seeing only whitened, straight teeth on every single advert on television or in magazines. Instagram is one of the worst culprits, as well as reality television stars.

The toothy smiles depict small and straight-bottomed teeth, to angular and gapped dental work.

Miller's teeth are the most eye-catching in the adverts, as she is missing lateral incisors, yet the photo is the most liked of the series on the social media site.

Miller, the model featured in the shoot, wrote on her Instagram page; "Growing up you go through an evolution of overcoming insecurity’s and healing from being bullied or the intense pressures of fitting in the perfect cookie cutter traditional style of beauty."

"A celebration for the beautiful freaks shedding even more of my insecurity’s and doubts, there is space for everyone to be themselves even in the beauty and fashion world! Hope it inspires everyone especially the youth to love their quirks even more and feel beautiful and powerful with their true self! Hate and exclusion is so washed out."

The genius creative director of Gucci , Alessandro Michele, commented on the campaign,

“The idea is to create a representation that is close to reality with a humanized point of view, however seemingly strange. But the strangeness is human so it’s beautiful.” Some of the responses to the lipstick images have been outright offensive.

While Michele doesn't care about normative ideas of perfection, and who insults the campaign, it's clear that some facets of society just aren't ready for 'strange' beauty. Unsurprising, but disappointing.

The Instagram comments don't exactly inspire confidence in society's acceptance of women in their natural state. One user, @isiliciouz, "This will definitely not motivate anyone to buy this f*cking lipstick." Ouch.

Another person commented on the brand’s post, “This is not Gucci at all. Turning a true Italian luxury brand into joke. This is truly disappointing and very depressing.” I fail to see how not having expensive dental work that few can afford as a joke, but whatever.

There were some highly positive responses however, from social media users who felt embarrassed by their teeth and insecure about their image.

"Thank you, I was also born without my adult lateral incisors and always felt so insecure and ashamed of smiling before I had my surgery. I wish I had seen this ad when I was younger, it’s beautiful and 16 year old me is smiling."

Many people who weren't blessed with hereditary perfect dental work came forward to share their joy at being represented, with somebody commenting:

“I’ve dealt with the insecurity and shame of my missing lateral incisors all of my life. There is something truly dehumanizing about feeling like you’re not allowed to smile or talk too excitedly out of shame. This is beautiful.”

As someone who had braces for three, painful years, as well as four teeth wrenched out in order to straighten my smile, it was a lot of money and discomfort. Seeing that beauty isn't just for a small number of lucky people is inspiring.

Filtered Instagram pictures and reality television have led to the popularity of veneers in our culture. We're subconsciously lectured that teeth have to be straight and white to be beautiful, but this only came about as a result of brand marketing.

We're glad the series is sparking a conversation, if nothing else. Some people just worship the status quo, and the elitist snobbery of narrow-minded beauty. That's their problem.

Georgia May Jagger reignited the talk of gap-toothed beauty, following in Madonna's heeled footsteps after she first burst onto the scene. The more diversity and representation that these upper-class brands practice, the better.

With the environmental crisis being one of the most pressing issues of modern living, small changes can have a big impact.

One area which needs reform is the fashion industry – as we live in a culture which highlights the constant purchasing of plastic based and environmentally un-sound items.

However, times are a'changing, as more and more people become interested in alternative routes to serving a lewk. Charity and thrift shopping, re-sale apps like Depop and swap shopping are gaining popularity – and there is a swap shop kicking off in Dublin next weekend if you want to dip a toe into the world of sustainable shopping.

Organised by Sustainable Fashion Dublin (@sustainablefashiondublin), the swap shop is the perfect way to update your wardrobe without harming the planet – and if it's an alien concept to you, here is how it all works.

Co-founded by Geraldine Carton and Taz Kelleher, the Instagram page for SFD is creeping up on 8k followers, and is bringing together a community of young Irish people who are committed to being more mindful about their environmental impact.

In their own words, Sustainable Fashion Dublin 'seeks to encouraging people to shop second-hand and discover sustainable fashion choices through fun, feel-good, environmentally-conscious events such as charity shop crawls, workshops, panel talks, and of course, swap shops.'

In recent months, there has been a huge surge in the 'trend' of sustainability, with environmentally conscious influencers rising through the Instagram rankings to promote a sustainable lifestyle over a constant fast fashion culture – and swap shopping is a part of it.

The concept is simple: You bring items of clothing that you're willing to part with, and get to choose items brought by other attendees in return.

The SFD Swap Shop allows you to bring up to 5 separate items – freshly washed and in good condition (and no forms of underwear).

On arrival the pre-loved clothing will go through a quick quality control examination, before being hung up along the racks of other clothing brought by your fellow swap-shoppers.

Once all the ticket holders have arrived and parted ways with their style swag, attendees line up, and after a 3-2-1 countdown, head into the racks to nab their first ultimate favourite item. Once everyone has one item they love, swap shoppers go back to the starting line and do the same again to grab their second most coveted piece. Repeat for a third time, and once everyone has three items, it's a free for all, with all attendees allowed to peruse the rails at their leisure.

All ages, sizes and genders are welcome, and cold drinks and woodfire pizzas are on the menu.

Kicking off in Lucky's, Dublin, on May 18th, tickets fcr the event are just €15.00, so you can nab 3+ new fashion bits for scarcely the price of one new fast fashion piece.

You can find your tickets here, and following the swap shop, your ticket gives you entry to a gorge sustainable flea market after the festivities.

THIS POST IS DARK AND FULL OF SPOILERS.

game of thrones spoilers GIF

On the latest episode of Game of Thrones, the fourth offering from HBO's hit show has made a LOT of people furious, and we can understand why.

Missandei, the darling of Narth, AKA Nathalie Emmanuel, AKA that poor woman who has to plait all of Danaerys' hair on the daily, was brutally murdered by Cersei Lannister.

The actress has responded to her character's final scene, when the evil queen took her head in front of her right-hand-woman and boyfriend Greyworm. Her last word gave us chills; 'Dracarys'. She basically told Dany to burn King's Landing to the ground…and we don't blame her.

The internet was submerged in grief at the character loss, having watched her grow from an enslaved woman to the Dragon Queen's advisor and personal friend over the last few seasons. A white woman ended the life of only woman of colour on the show, which has seen criticism for it's lack of diversity in the past.

Nathalie herself presumably wasn't best pleased when she read the script, as her character was already way too underdeveloped as it is. The potential which the writers had to work with was monumental, yet she was captured and brutally beheaded instead of being granted a deserved hero moment.

Let's not forget that the word 'Dracarys' was uttered by Dany when she freed Missandei and acquired the army of the Unsullied. The word set her free, and was perfect as her last uttering. We adore symmetry.

One critic of Missandei's death was none other than Ava DuVernay, one of the most successful and influential black female directors of all time.

“So…the one and only sister on the whole epic, years-long series? That’s what you wanna do? Okay. #GOT” she wrote on Twitter. Nathalie retweeted it, with a string of love heart emojis to boot. It's clear she is grateful that the online community took notice of her undignified ending.

She may have just retweeted it as a show of admiration for the iconic movie producer and filmmaker, but we feel a subtle 'YAS' from those love hearts.

The actress also wrote a gorgeous tribute to her character on Instagram, cherishing Missandei for the gentle woman she was; "It’s been one of my greatest joys playing Missandei of Naath… The quiet and kind translator. A brilliant woman who overcame so much suffering and found herself, her voice… and her one and only love."

"She represented so much for me, personally, that I have no choice but to carry the things she has taught me into my life going forward. Thank you to everyone who made it possible for me to play this part."

A post shared by Nathalie Emmanuel (@nathalieemmanuel) on

She gave Emilia Clark a shout out for acting alongside her for so many years, and being the perfectgalpal: "I’ve loved playing your BFF for the past 7 years. Thank you for being such a wonderful person in my life and a source of light and laughter. The Bad Ass Boss Lady Warrior Goddess club will live on forever."

She referenced Greyworm/Baeworm, played by Raleigh Ritchie, and our hearts exploded:

"I literally cannot tell you what sharing the screen with you has meant to me. I found performances I didn’t know I had inside me, simply because you gave me so much to work against. Playing Missandei and Grey Worm’s journey has been so special. I couldn’t have asked for a more generous and supportive co-star."

A post shared by Nathalie Emmanuel (@nathalieemmanuel) on

"We’ve been out in these streets together negotiating so much but always having each other’s back. Thank you for all of it… you have been a dear friend at every point," she added. Baeworm and Missandei were destined to return to the beaches and live out a happy life together as a couple, and we are FUMING this was taken away.

Raleigh played the other person of colour on the show, and certain scenes set in the North showed the discomfort which Missandei and Greyworm felt surrounded by Caucasian people.

She made sure to thank the fans for their continued support, and the entire crew; "You will always hold a special place in my heart. The love and energy we shared will be hard to match. I feel like I hit the jackpot meeting and working with you all. I love you. To the fans of the show, and of Missandei… It’s been a pleasure playing her for you."

The actor who plays the Mountain also posted a hilarious photo of himself with Nathalie to Instagram;

A post shared by Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson (@thorbjornsson) on

"So sorry. Cersei made me do it. Hope we’re cool!" he wrote. Bless his wee soul, but we're still raging at him for taking our girl Missandei's head.

We are 100 percent committing to the fantasy that the lovely lady is "sipping a rum on a beach somewhere in sky."

Next time you hire one woman of colour for the show, Game of Thrones, maybe give her a better death? Not by a woman who clearly embodies white feminism? Problematic much?

We'd like to end this rant by showing you Jared Leto attending the 2019 Met Gala as Missandei, head in hand:

At least GOT fans haven't lost their sense of humour yet.

A Quick Guide to Life Insurance for New Parents

Everything changes when you have your first child. You start thinking about different things, wanting to achieve different goals, and focusing on the future of the child. This is a time when things such as better job security and a suitable life insurance policy become very important all of a sudden. Everything is geared towards securing a better future for your child.

As a new parent, getting a life insurance policy is a step in the right direction. You are not doing it for yourself, but for your partner and the child you love so much. Fortunately, there are many ways to get sufficient life insurance coverage, even when you are on a tight budget. This quick guide will help you find the perfect life insurance as a new parent.

Term vs. Permanent

The first thing you want to understand about life insurance policies is the two major types: term life insurance and permanent life insurance. As the name suggests, term life insurance is attached to a predetermined term, meaning the policy will remain in force for a period of time.

Term life insurance tends to be more affordable. The timeframe itself can be adjusted to as long as 15 years; some insurance companies are starting to offer longer terms too. This means you can use term life insurance to protect you during certain periods like raising your child or repaying your mortgage.

Permanent life insurance, on the other hand, is, well, permanent. You pay a higher premium for this type of insurance, but you don’t have to worry about renewing the policy. Permanent life insurance is particularly useful when you have a child that will be permanently dependent on you.

You can use permanent life insurance to plan your estate better. The higher insurance premium can be considered an investment when you consider the return that your loved ones will receive in the event of your death.

Balancing Your Policy

Here’s something that not all first time life insurance buyers understand: you can convert your term life insurance into permanent life insurance. Most term life insurance policies can be converted, either in half or in full, into permanent life insurance, adding a bit of flexibility to the mix.

This means you can start with term life insurance and convert that policy – either a part of it or the whole policy – into permanent life insurance for better protection. If you are starting with a limited budget, this is an option worth exploring.

Ask your insurance provider about the possibility of converting term life insurance into permanent life insurance before making a purchase. While you are at it, don’t hesitate to negotiate a better quote for your life insurance too.

The Perfect Quote

That actually brings us to the next thing to understand about life insurance: you can fine-tune every aspect of it to better suit your needs. You can adjust the term of the insurance based on how much you can afford to pay in premiums.

The same is true for your insurance coverage. You don’t have to settle for the amount offered by the insurance company and can instead calculate the coverage amount you really need for maximum protection. The coverage amount will influence the premium you have to pay.

Lastly, you can ask for discounts and get special offers on your life insurance, just like you can with your health insurance. You can also take steps to lower your risk profile, which will result in a lower insurance premium as well.

With these details in mind, buying your first life insurance policy as a new parent is not going to be a complicated process. Start your search by getting quotes online today.

Bloating that is persistent and doesn’t come and go

'Symptoms of ovarian cancer can be similar to IBS so it is important to talk to your GP, particularly if you develop IBS symptoms after the age of 50.'

Ovarian cancer patient and advocate, Anne Herlihy shares her story in the video too. 'I wish I had known,' she said.

#IBelieveHer has been trending on Twitter this afternoon following news of Paddy Jackson’s signing to the London Irish rugby club.

The public has taken to the social media platform to express their disgust and shock at the news of the sportsman’s signing.

Understandably, people are feeling frustrated, hurt and simply distraught by the news, proving that accusations made against Jackson didn’t ‘ruin his life’ as many claimed following the non-guilty verdict.

One Twitter user wrote: “This is how rape culture manifests. This is how we protect rapists over survivors. This is why people don’t come forward. When asking how to protect women, start by looking in the f**king mirror.”

“Shocked and disappointed by this news. This is a player who should never work again after the way that poor woman was treated. Acquitted of rape, but what came out of that trial shows he is an appalling example of humanity,” said another.

London Irish have just confirmed that Paddy Jackson has signed for their team ahead of the upcoming 2019/20 rugby season.

Jackson was acquitted of rape in the now-infamous Belfast case last year alongside Ulster team-mate Stuart Olding, and joined Perpignan last summer.

Both players had their national-team contracts revoked by the Irish Rugby Football Union after the social media storm surrounding offensive, misogynistic texts messages sent into a group chat.

Olding and Jackson were accused of embodying the middle-class toxic masculinity of the country through their sexually-degrading comments about women.

A post shared by Catherine Wharton  (@catherine.wharton) on

Jackson is now linking up with London Irish's director of rugby Declan Kidney and head coach Les Kiss, who both worked with him in their time in Ireland.

There's a history between them; Kidney awarded Jackson his first international cap back in 2013, while Kiss worked with the fly-half with both the Ireland national team and Ulster.

"Players of the calibre of Paddy Jackson do not become available very often and both myself and Les are looking forward to working with him in the future" Kidney said.

"He is a player with proven international quality who we feel will add value to our squad, and it is pleasing that Paddy sees London Irish as a part of his future."

Speaking on the move, Jackson said: "I’m delighted to be joining London Irish next season at such an exciting and pivotal time for everyone involved with the club. London Irish have a clear vision for where they want to be and I look forward to being part of it."

He apologised following the trial for his disrespectful conduct towards the woman who accused him of rape; "The criticism of my behaviour is fully justified and I know I have betrayed the values of my family and those of the wider public."

It will undoubtedly be interesting to see how the general Irish public respond to the latest controversial news.
