For centuries now, Irish people have flocked to far corners of the earth in the hope of creating new lives in foreign lands.

Our unique culture and charm can be found dotted around the globe, and while many of our expats have settled into their new surroundings, for some, Ireland will always be the place they call home.

From cockroaches to lumpy porridge, there are just some things we Irish will never get used to – just ask Reddit user CherryPieMix.

Having swapped the tranquillity of the emerald isle for the hustle and bustle of New York City, the expat has had to adapt to his new lifestyle.

In an effort to vent his frustrations, the homesick Reddit user penned an emotional, and pretty hilarious, love letter to island of Ireland.

Do yourself a favour and read this absolute masterpiece.

"Staying in New York at the moment and jesus christ there's a new threat around every corner,” he begins.

"First it was the -15C weather that managed to overpower the central heating in my room. Woke up puffing clouds of mist and with my hands and lips dryer than your aul one's growler.

"Next up we have the bed bugs – was just at a cinema that was reported to have bed bugs a while back and now I'm shitting myself thinking we might possibly have an infestation. The movie wasn't even that good so it wasn't worth it!

"Oh and I love my porridge in the morning, but man it's awful lumpy because I can't leave it out to soak overnight without fear of attractive cockroaches!

"We've already seen one of the f*ckers around the kitchen, so now we might have roaches to go with the bed bugs!

"Hopefully they'll start a species war with each other and one will eradicate the other.

"Oh and did I mention that the post comes at all f*cking hours? I've been waiting on a package the last few days that I need to sign for and haven't been able to leave the house til after 15:00 because I've been waiting on the mail man.

"Ireland's got its problems but as far as living goes it's pretty simple. We don't know how easy we have it. Everything is so f*cking complicated over hear it's unbelievable.

"I miss the days of having a euro and being able to go in and buy something that costs exactly a euro. A dollar doesn't get you sh*t here! Because it's really $1.18!

"Hug your ma's and take an extra big sh*te in your toilet this evening for me lads, because I can't do the former and have to be careful about the latter considering the toilets here clog if you look at them.

"God bless."

Tributes are pouring in following the death of an Irish teenager who was killed in a tragic accident while on holiday in Lanzarote.

Stephen O'Gara, from Ballaghaderreen in Co Roscommon, died after the quad bike he was driving collided with a car in the early hours of Saturday morning.

The 19-year-old was visiting the region with his mother Maureen and his grandmother.

According to The Irish Independent, local TD John O'Mahony described the incident as a “terrible tragedy.”

“He was a young lad just starting out in life. A few of the family were away on holidays and for this to happen is such a shock,” he said.

“In a small community something like this affects an awful lot of people. When it happens abroad it is even harder because the community is not able to offer the same support to the family,” he added.

It's understood that relatives have now travelled to Lanzarote to be with Stephen's mother and grandmother.

A spokeswoman for the Department of Foreign Affairs said: “We are aware of this case and providing consular assistance to the family.”

If you've ever watched a Victoria's Secret fashion show, you'll know that the models who walk the runway are pretty much the textbook definition of the 'perfect' female physique.

However, it seems that even they are not immune to the brutal and cut-throat ways the fashion industry can body-shame women.

Model Nina Agdal has hit back at a magazine after being dropped from a cover shoot for not being thin enough.

Weekend attire

A post shared by Nina Agdal (@ninaagdal) on

The 25-year-old shared an image from the unnamed publication with her 1.5 million Instagram followers over the weekend, revealing how she had been cut from a fashion shoot because her look “deviated” from her portfolio.

“Today, I’m disappointed and appalled at the still very harsh reality of this industry,” she captioned the image which shows her standing topless, covering her breasts with her left arm.

She goes onto explain how she received an “unapologetic” email concluding that the the cover shoot would not be published because it “did not reflect well” on her talent.

“The publisher claimed my look deviated from my portfolio and that I did not fit into the (sample size) samples, which is completely false,” she claimed.

Today, I’m disappointed and appalled at the still very harsh reality of this industry. A few months ago, I agreed to shoot with a creative team I believed in and was excited to collaborate with. When my agent received an unapologetic email concluding they would not run my cover/story because it “did not reflect well on my talent” and “did not fit their market,” the publisher claimed my look deviated from my portfolio and that I did not fit into the (sample size) samples, which is completely false. If anyone has any interest in me, they know I am not an average model body – I have an athletic build and healthy curves. After a tough year of taking a step back from the insensitive and unrealistic pressures of this industry and dealing with paralyzing social anxiety, I walked into that shoot as a 25 year old WOMAN feeling more comfortable in my own skin and healthier than ever before. Some days I’m a sample size, some days I’m a size 4, some a 6. I am not built as a runway model and have never been stick thin. Now more than ever, I embrace my curves and work diligently in the gym to stay strong and most of all, sane. I am proud to say that my body has evolved from when I started this crazy ride as a 16 year old GIRL with unhealthy and insufficient eating habits. So, shame on you and thank you to the publisher for reaffirming how important it is to live your truth and say it out loud, no matter who you are or what size. I decided to release an image to draw awareness and support of an issue that's bigger than just myself and affects so many people not just in the fashion industry, but in general, with the goal of bringing women from all over together in a celebration of our bodies. Let's find ways to build each other up instead of constantly finding ways to tear each other down. #bodyshaming #bodyimage #selfimage #dietculture #mybodymybusiness

A post shared by Nina Agdal (@ninaagdal) on

The model, who has worked with likes of Sports Illustrated and Maxium, went on to share details of her struggle with “paralysing social anxiety,” explaining her decision to “step back from the insensitive and unrealistic pressures” of the industry.

However, she did say that she now feels “healthier than ever before,” and is proud to have overcome her “unhealthy and insufficient eating habits”.

“Some days I’m a sample size, some days I’m a size 4, some a 6. I am not built as a runway model and have never been stick thin,” she writes.

“Now more than ever, I embrace my curves and work diligently in the gym to stay strong and most of all, sane.”

Obviously having the worst time ever x 2

A post shared by Nina Agdal (@ninaagdal) on

She finished the inspirational post by saying how she hopes her story will help other women who may be struggling with body positivity.

“Let's find ways to build each other up instead of constantly finding ways to tear each other.”

We couldn't agree more!

US actor Aziz Ansari has responded to allegations that he sexually assaulted a young woman on a date last year, saying he believed the encounter was “completely consensual”.

The Master of None star, who recently won the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy Television series, admitted he was “surprised and concerned” by the woman's claims.

The 23-year-old woman shared a detailed account of the night in question during an interview with Babe magazine, describing the events as “violating and painful”.

She alleged that the 34-year-old actor had ignored numerous verbal and non-verbal cues signalling her discomfort throughout the night.

"Most of my discomfort was expressed in me pulling away and mumbling. I know that my hand stopped moving at some points," she recalled.

She went onto say how Aziz apologised the next day, sending a text in which he admitted he had “misread things in the moment,” adding that he was “truly sorry”.

In a statement to Babe magazine, the actor said: “I took her words to heart and responded privately after taking the time to process what she had said.”

“I continue to support the movement that is happening in our culture. It is necessary and long overdue.”

The woman was prompted to speak up after she noticed that Aziz has worn a pin in support of the Time's Up campaign on the Golden Globes carpet last week.

The initiative, fronted by some of Hollywood's most influential female stars, was created to help those that have suffered sexual abuse or harassment in the workplace.

Ever since the nineties, we have looked to Britney Spears for style inspiration (and a few faux pas, but we'll ignore them).

Anyway, the vast majority of the time, Britney can be seen wearing things we simply can't afford.

UNTIL NOW!

For me and my mates, our teenage years were all about one destination only – The Wezz.

A land of myth and legend, it was almost like the Hotel California of 2007. You'd check in, but you never really checked out.

A decade later, and I still relive my Wezz days, and occasionally still suffer the consequences of poor decisions made while under the influence of half a naggin.

If you were a Wezz-lover, please read on, and try not to laugh with the nostalgia:

1. The preparation was KEY.

To be fair, half the fun of Wezz was getting ready as a squad beforehand.

Leg warmers, tutu, some sort of Ralph Lauren top and some pearls? Class, you looked bloody class.

And of course, as you grew, so did your style. You went from looking like a fairy stripper to wearing Abercrombie hoodies and Ugg boots, because you are so fashion.

2. Naggins, naggins everywhere.

So you'd leave your house and venture off on public transport (or walk, if you were close). It was on this adventure that you would attempt to have a little beverage. It was also probably the first time you ever popped a squat in public – a lifelong memory.

Drink left over after your walk? Nay bother. It was like something out of James Bond trying to sneak your naggin into Wezz. I actually once heard of a girl who had ripped open a teddy bear, lobbed her vodka inside, and put him back together. I'm sorry, but if that's not GENIUS, I don't know what is.

3. Stalking your prey in the queue.

You arrived – and you felt damn good. You walked down along the queue, treating it like a f**king runway, gawking at the crowd like they're in a zoo. 'Oh, the captain of the Junior Cup team is here. SO hot right now.'

You probably ended up licking faces at some stage during the night; total ledge.

4. Whipping out that membership card, and feeling famous.

Does anyone else remember seeing the 'non-members' queue and absolutely CRINGING with embarrassment for them? Chronic.

I won't lie to you, I still have my membership pass from back in my Wezz days, as a staunch reminder that I peaked at 15.

5. Being a rep made you invincible.

So, back in the day, I was a 'rep' for Wezz, which was exactly what it sounds like.

I sold tickets, for no actual personal profit I might add, but sure, you gotta do what you gotta do. The heart wants what it wants.

6. The smoking area was LIT.

I will NEVER forget having my first ever cigarette in the smoking area of Wezz, and thinking that I was literally the biggest legend God had ever created. Anyone else?

Spoiler alert: smoking isn't actually cool. Ever.

7. The drunk chair

There was always one poor gobshite who just could not hold their booze. They would be excommunicated to the drunk chair (soon became drunk room, as we got older) to sober up.

There were always threats of calling the gardai, or GOD FORBID, your mum – but usually you downed some water and went on your merry way. Blessed.

8. 'Will you meet my mate?'

And so began the most important part of the night – getting the score (I'm actually embarrassed already).

Anyway, you'd lock eyes with some blonde-tipped young man wearing a rugby jersey, and instantly fall in love. Now, obviously you never approached them, that would have been weird, right?

Instead you would send a friend over (or their pal would approach you) and a contract would be discussed, usually ending in you two love bird smooching against the wall, while the ever-romantic Tiesto blared in the background.

9. The sweaty walls (*shudders*)

Let's actually talk about the walls for a second, actually. WHY were they so weirdly moist?

Seriously, there was more sweat on those walls than there is in an actual sauna. Just an observation, is all.

10. The absolute TUNES.

Okay, so Wezz certainly had its flaws, but let me bloody tell you, the music was NOT one of them, lads. The absolute electricity in the room when Get Low came on was unparallelled, and totally humiliating when I think about it now.

Then there was the grande finale – Tiesto. Where does one even begin?

Every single teenager in the place would run into the middle of the dancefloor, in what was probably a genuine safety issue. Then, the strobes began, and people went NUTS.

11. The aftermath.

The lights came on, and you'd kiss the love of your life goodbye (until next time, lover). You'd rendezvous with your ladies, and leg it across the road to get food before your parents collected you.

Abrakebabra or Eddie Rockets? Genuinely one of the hardest choices I made in my youth. Your mum would collect you, and you'd have to lie and tell her that you had an innocent, booze free night! She knew otherwise, but let you at it. You're only young once, right?

12. The memories.

Nothing makes me reminisce quite like my glory days in Wezz. Myself and my friends still talk about the shit that happened when we were 14, and I love that.

As grimy and gross as it was, I think we all made great pals, the occasional long-lasting relationship blossomed, and the memories will last a life time.

Plus, it was great training for Coppers.
