Yearly Archives: 2018

This day ten years ago, Hollywood went into mourning as the news of Heath Ledger's untimely passing made front-page headlines.

The Australian actor was just 28-years-old when he died of a cardiac arrest brought on by an accidental overdose of prescription drugs.

The father-of-one, whose career had gone from strength to strength in the years leading up to his tragic demise, died alone in his Manhattan apartment in the early hours of January 22.

Loved by fans and lauded by critics, the impact the award-winning actor had in just ten short years on the film industry cannot be underestimated, with his final role in The Dark Knight securing him an Oscar, which was awarded posthumously.

Today, film fans and industry insiders take to Twitter to honour the actor who brought us numerous memorable characters including Patrick Verona. Ned Kelly, Ennis Del Mar and The Joker.

Last night, Hollywood's leading lads and ladies came together to honour the best achievements in film and television performances over the last 12 months.

The 24th annual Screen Actor's Guild Award proved to be a true celebration of the power of women, with many hosts taking the opportunity to thank the 'silence breakers' who made strides to end sexual harassment and abuse in the entertainment industry.

With this in mind, many viewers were shocked to spot James Franco in the audience despite having been accused earlier this month of inappropriate behaviour.

The 39-year-old was nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role for his role in The Disaster Artist, however, he decided to skip the red carpet and pre-show interviews.

The Los Angeles Times, which first reported that five women had accused the actor of sexual misconduct, said on Friday that the actor planned to attend the ceremony.

James has denied all allegations of wrongdoing, claiming that he prides himself on being able to take responsibility for his actions.

Speaking on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, the actor said the claims made against him were “not accurate” and said he completely supports “people coming out and being able to have a voice because they didn’t have a voice for so long.

He also said during an interview on NBC’s Late Night With Seth Meyers that he has his “own side of this story.”

Alison Brie, Franco's sister-in-law and The Disaster Artist co-star, was quizzed about the allegations on last night's red carpet.

When asked by E! News' Giuliana Rancic to describe how the allegations had impacted her family, the actress said: “Not everything that has been reported is fully accurate, so I think we’re waiting to get all the information. But of course now is the time for listening, and that’s what we’re all trying to do.”

Meanwhile, Aziz Ansari, who was also accused of inappropriate behaviour, did not attend last night's ceremony.

New figures show that over one-third of the student population in Ireland say they are experiencing 'serious' or 'very serious' financial difficulties.

10 per cent of all those attending college in Ireland participated in a survey overseen by the Higher Education Authority.

Results found that almost half of all full-time students were employed during term time, with 50 per cent of those who do work admitting that they would not be able to afford college if they lost their jobs.

On average, students who work throughout the college year spend 20 per cent less time studying, meaning that their grades suffer as a result.

The Eurostudent survey, which was carried out across 30 countries, is the sixth of its kind and aims to examine life for third level students, including social and living conditions.

In Ireland, students were found to have become increasingly reliant on their parents or family members, with those attending Institutes of Technologies more likely to experience financial difficulties than those in Universities.

What's more, while the impact of social class is not directly explored, the study found a clear link between parental education levels and student financial security, with sons and daughters of higher educated people less likely to suffer financial hardship.

The countdown to the royal wedding is officially underway and we can’t help but sulk over the fact that we still haven’t received an invitation yet, but there’s still time, right?

The rumour mill is full of whispers about Meghan’s wedding dress designer and Prince William’s role in the wedding, and now details about the former Suits star’s hen-party have been shared.

According to US Weekly, the future bride is planning on celebrating in a very calm way.

Forget about the fluorescent pink feather boas and plastic tiaras, Meghan is straying away from the stereotypical hen-do traditions, “Meghan will be having a party but won’t be calling it her ‘bachelorette.”

The 36-year-old is hoping to host a relaxed pre-wedding party with her dearest friends.

“Think low-key, think somewhere out of London, good food and drink, a little music. It won’t be wild,” the magazine reported.

The guest list is set to feature both male and female friends, including her best friends Lindsay Jill Roth, Jessica Mulroney and Markus Anderson.

During her latest official visit, the actress told one royal superfan that Wales was a potential spot for her celebration.

Anne Daley was lucky enough to talk to Meghan when she visited Cardiff earlier this week, alongside her fiance Prince Harry.

"I asked her if she would like to come on a hen night around the nightspots of Cardiff, and she said she'd love to,” she joked.

Who knows where Meghan will host her ‘hen-party’, but one thing we know is that it’ll be one classy affair.

New figures show a jump in female Defence Force applicants following a successful recruitment initiative.

Unlike previous efforts, the 2017 campaign has a strong digital and social media presence, with half its €360,000 budget being spent on content creation alone.

Much of the content was designed to attract 'sporty' women as part of the Governments' plan to double female participation in the army, which currently stands at six per cent.

The strategy resulted in a total of 13,854 applications – 11.5 per cent of which came from female candidates.

Speaking about the figures, a spokeswoman for the Defence Forces said yesterday that “the level of applicants met and exceeded the Defence Forces applicant targets for 2017”.

20 of the 524 females who applied for Cadetships were successful recruited while 52 of the 1,032 females applying for General Service Recruitment have been inducted so far.

29 females are said to have applied for Air Corps Apprenticeships, though none were successful.

It looks like one of the UK's favourite reality TV shows could be coming to an end with reports suggesting that Big Brother, and it's celebrity spin-off, are set to be axed after 18 years on air.

According to The Daily Star, Channel 5 bosses are ready to say farewell to the show which first aired on Channel 4 back in 2000.

It seems that plummeting ratings are to blame, with viewers said to have lost interest in the format.

Speaking to the paper, a Big Brother insider said: “There have been conversations between the execs about not renewing the contract for both Big Brother and Celebrity Big Brother. It would be the end of an era but they feel the time is right to end.”

However, they did note that noting is set in stone, and even suggested that the format may be picked up by another production company should Channel 5 decide to drop it altogether.

"There is still time for the bosses at Channel 5 to change their mind but it is not looking likely. Even if they drop it, another channel or a streaming service may decide to pick it up in the future."

Producers are currently casting housemates for this summer's civilian edition, though these latest reports suggest that it could be the last ever series.

With rival show's like Love Island to compete with, Big Brother has seen a steady decline in ratings over the past few years.

Last summer's launch drew an average of 2.2 million viewers – 200,000 less than the previous year.

The news come as a disappointment to fans of the cult programme, though many agree that now is the right time to pull the plug.

The Dublin hotel at the centre of the recent blogger 'exposure' controversy has issued the influencer in question with a massive fake bill for all the publicity they've given her.

Earlier this week, staff at the Charleville Lodge Hotel received an email from an unnamed person offering to mention the establishment on YouTube and Instagram in exchange for free accommodation this Valentine's Day.

The writer of the email, who told the hotel they worked as a “lifestyle, beauty and travel based” influencer, claimed to have "over 87,000 YouTube subscribers as well as 76,000 Instagram followers."

Now, if any of you are familiar with this well-know Dublin establishment, you'll know it's no stranger to a bit of controversy.

Having previously taken the absolute piss out of vegans and the gluten free, it's no surprise that management weren't overly excited about the proposition.

In a lengthy response posted to Facebook, hotel manager Paul Stenson  pondered how he could pay his staff with said 'exposure'.

"If I let you stay here in return for a feature in your video, who is going to pay the staff who look after you," he wrote.

Since then, UK blogger Elle Darby has identified herself as the person behind the email request and confronted the situation in a 'story time' video uploaded to her YouTube channel.

“Over the past couple of nights, my partner Connor and I have been discussing going to Dublin for a little weekend away the weekend before Valentine's Day, and I decided to contact some hotels asking if they would like to collaborate,” she told her followers.

She then went on the describe the hotel's response as “malicious and nasty” and claimed it “didn't come from a good place.”

Off the back of Elle's video response, Paul then took the decision to ban all blogger from ever entering the establishment.

However, it doesn't end there.

Yesterday afternoon, Paul once again took to social media to share a fake invoice he had drawn up for the fashion and lifestyle blogger, charging her over €5 million for “the provision of features in 114 articles across 20 countries with a potential reach of 450 million people.”

The document also noted that “mentions in videos will not qualify as payment.”

We wonder what Elle will have to say about the latest development?

Hollywood's leading females were out in force yesterday as tens of thousands of women and men demonstrated in cities across the globe.

Returning for its second year, the Women's March began in 2017 in opposition to the newly elected Donald Trump.

Reproductive health and Trump's anti-abortion stance were just some of the issues being protested at this year's event, and while the tone of the demonstrations remained highly political, recent allegations of rampant sexual harassment in the entertainment industry were also a topic of discussion.

Speaking to crowds at the Women's March rally in Los Angeles, actress Scarlett Johansson gave a powerful speech on behalf of the Time's Up campaign – during which, she called out James Franco, who had claimed to be a supporter of the movement despite being accused of sexual misconduct by five different women.

“How could a person publicly stand by an organisation that helps to provide support for victims of sexual assault while privately preying on people who have no power?” she asked the crowd.

Adding: “I want my pin back, by the way,” on reference to the Time's Up pin worn by Franco on the Golden Globes red carpet earlier this month.

While she did not mention him by name, a representative for the star later confirmed to the Los Angeles Times that she was indeed referring to the Disaster Artist director.

James has denied all allegations of wrongdoing, claiming that he prides himself on being able to take responsibility for his actions.

Speaking on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, the actor said the claims made against him were “not accurate” and said he completely supports “people coming out and being able to have a voice because they didn’t have a voice for so long.”
