This day ten years ago, Hollywood went into mourning as the news of Heath Ledger's untimely passing made front-page headlines.

The Australian actor was just 28-years-old when he died of a cardiac arrest brought on by an accidental overdose of prescription drugs.

The father-of-one, whose career had gone from strength to strength in the years leading up to his tragic demise, died alone in his Manhattan apartment in the early hours of January 22.

Loved by fans and lauded by critics, the impact the award-winning actor had in just ten short years on the film industry cannot be underestimated, with his final role in The Dark Knight securing him an Oscar, which was awarded posthumously.

Today, film fans and industry insiders take to Twitter to honour the actor who brought us numerous memorable characters including Patrick Verona. Ned Kelly, Ennis Del Mar and The Joker.

Last Sunday marked the 9th anniversary of Heath Ledger's untimely passing in January 2008, and with almost a decade to reflect on her partner's death, Michelle Williams reveals that her outlook on life has altered considerably.

Speaking to the Wall Street Journal, the acclaimed actress, who starred opposite Heath in Brokeback Mountain, explained that in the aftermath of Heath's passing, she understandably struggled with the implications of moving on with her young daughter, Matilda.

"At that time, I was inconsolable, because I felt, 'How will he be able to find us?’" she told the publication. "This is where we lived, and he won't know where we are. And now I can't believe I thought that."

Turning her attention to the future, the star, who rose to fame on Dawson's Creek, reveals that the heartbreaking experience has left her with a practical view of relationships and motherhood.

"It's hard to romanticise romance when you're 36. When you've been a parent for 11 years and you've done it alone, you don't have romantic ideals, because you have a practical understanding that you can do it by yourself."

Having lost Heath at the age of 28, the mother of one explains that his passing eradicated certain ideals she had internalised from a young age.

"The romantic idea of meeting your person and having a storybook family life that looks like the model you grew up with – that doesn't really exist for me."

Heath and Michelle began dating in 2004 and their daughter was born the following year.

The movie industry were left reeling eight years ago when news broke that much-loved and well-respected actor, Heath Ledger, had died from an accidental overdose.

Having graduated from roles in Aussie soaps and teen movies, Heath's star was, undoubtedly, at the time of his death in January 2008 on the rise.

From his highly-acclaimed performance in Brokeback Mountain to his depiction of the Joker in The Dark Knight. the 28-year-old actor was well on his way to establishing himself as one of the greatest actors in the industry.

And yet despite the numerous accolades and acclaim, much of the star's private life was spent battling many of his own demons which included insomnia and addiction.

Opening up about the untimely death of his son during a recent interview with the Daily Mail Australia, Kim Ledger insisted no one was to blame for his son's passing, but Heath himself.

"It was totally his fault. It was no one else's – he reached for them," Kim said. "He put them in his system. You can't blame anyone else in that situation."

Aware that his son was over-medicating, Kim recalls Heath's sister Katie offering her brother advice on the night before he died, with Kim recalling: "His sister was on the phone to him the night before telling him not to take the prescription medications with the sleeping tablets."

Haunted by his son's assurances that he knew what he was doing, Kim said of Heath: "He would have had no idea."

Heath shared a daughter with actress Michelle Williams.

It’s been seven years since Australian actor and director, Heath Ledger, died of an accidental prescription drug overdose in New York.

The actor’s legacy lives on, however, through the Australians In Film Heath Ledger Scholarship Award – which was handed out in LA this week – and, of course, through his daughter, Matilda.

Heath, who is probably best-known for his role as the Joker in The Dark Knight, dated Michelle Williams from 2004 to 2007, and the pair were also reportedly engaged for a period of time. In October 2005, their daughter was born.

Sadly however, just months before his January 2008 death, he and Michelle split.

At this week's seventh annual Australians In Film awards, Heath’s mother and sister explained how they have spent the past few weeks with Matilda and Michelle in Brooklyn.

Heath’s older sister, Kate, also stated that she has started to tell Matilda stories about her dad as “she is getting old enough to understand”.

“Matilda is gorgeous and very much like her daddy in many ways,” Kate told the Daily Telegraph.

Kate, a stylist and author, furthermore told The Herald-Sun in Melbourne: “I love telling stories about her daddy and how he grew up. I think it's so important for her to have a good sense of where she comes from in order for her to get to know herself."

Meanwhile, Women’s Weekly magazine has quotes from Kate which confirm that Heath's family “have a wonderful relationship with Michelle”. She added that her brother's former partner is “an amazing mother” and said they “all get on really well”.

Nine-year-old Matilda was just a toddler when she lost her dad, but Heath’s father has previously admitted that Matilda has an enormous number of his mannerisms – something which keeps his spirit alive.

Matilda’s mum and dad met on the set of Brokeback Mountain in 2004. Michelle remained out of the public eye following Heath’s passing, only releasing a statement expressing her heartbreak upon his death.

The Australians In Film Heath Ledger Scholarship Award was this year won by Matt Levett, who stars in a Place Called Home. The 2015 judging panel included actress Rose Byrne and Dodgeball star Vince Vaughn.

Emma Power reports

Kate Hudson was out promoting her new film, Wish I was Here, when she was questioned on whether she ever had a female fling, as well as her best on-screen kiss.

Asked by host, Andy Cohen, about her favourite onscreen kissing partner, Hudson picked Ledger, her co-star in 2002′s The Four Feathers.

Of the late actor, she said: “He was just so beautiful and sweet and gentle…he was lovely.”

Hudson also answered Cohen’s question about whether she has ever “taken a dip in the lady pond.”

She asked; “How deep is a dip?”

“I would say more than kissing,” Cohen clarified.

And after a lengthy pause (and another sip of her beverage), Hudson said, “No.”

Why so coy Kate?! We think there’s more to that than she’s admitting.

It looks like James Franco will not let that ‘sex list’ go. He has recently written some terrible words on his encounters with Lindsay Lohan, and even brings Heath Ledger into the mix.
