Yearly Archives: 2017

There are some foods which the Irish could prepare and devour in their sleep. Give us a potato, and we'll show you at least 10 ways to cook and serve it.

But leave us in the kitchen with certain types of seafood, and you'll more than likely find us leafing through a takeaway menu instead of tackling the fare in front of us.

Take mussels, for example.

According to the Red C survey commissioned by Bord Bia, over half of respondents have never considered eating mussels while a B&A study established that 51 per cent "wouldn't know how to prepare and cook shellfish properly at home.”

Considering we live on an island and are revered internationally for having some of the freshest seafood in the world, the good folk at Bord Bia think it might be time to take us all in hand.

As part of their #FlexYourMussels Campaign, Bord Bia are here to remind us that not only are mussels quick and easy to prepare; they are also great value for money, incredibly tasty and best of all – they are packed full of nutrients.

And it sounds like Roz Purcell –  one of our favourite food gurus – is a long-time convert.

"The fact that mussels are a great source of quality protein, are low in fat and provide several vitamins and minerals means that they are a regular on my shopping list!" she said. "There is no time like the present for people to try something new and flex their mussels in the kitchen."

And while we may accept the benefits, that doesn't mean we're any less clueless when it comes to cooking the damn things.

Thankfully, Bord Bia have thought of everything…

Obviously us Irish folk are obsessed with Ed Sheeran, so our excitement went into overdrive when we heard that the Shape Of You singer was spotted filming Carpool Karaoke with James Cordon.

The chart-topping singer and the British comedian were spotted zipping around LA in a car rigged with cameras.

The two seemed to be enjoying some tunes by the singer, and appeared to be giving the songs a good go.

The star even brought his guitar with him, so essentially James Cordon just got a private Ed Sheeran concert in his car.

The exciting sighting comes at the end of a very busy two months for Ed, who made a triumphant return from his year off work.

In the space of two months, he released an amazing album, had two number one singles and sold out an extensive world tour.

There is no word yet on when Ed's Carpool Karaoke will be released but we really hope it's soon.

Strike 4 Repeal have called for a strike to demonstrate their opinion on the 8th amendment to the government.

The people of Ireland are being asked to strike in support of the 11 women who have to take time off work every single day in order to travel abroad to procure abortions.

#Strike4Repeal is taking place on March 8, which aptly happens to be International Women's Day, and a number of businesses have signed up in support of the strike.

Aungier Danger, the Townsend bar, Bang Bang Café, The Brendan Behan pub, The Elbowroom, A4 Sounds, Nine Crows Street, Rothar and Sexsiopa.ie are among the first businesses to formally support the campaign.

Strike 4 Repeal are asking that the businesses shut down for the day in solidarity, or that the most affected staff be offered time off work to participate in the demonstration.

The group describes themselves as "an ad-hoc, non-affiliated group of activists, academics, artists and trade unionists preparing a nationwide Strike for Repeal on the 8th of March 2017."

"Our demand is that the Irish government call a referendum to repeal the 8th Amendment by the 8th of March. If not, Ireland will strike," reads a statement on their Facebook page.

"The strike will not be an industrial strike in the traditional sense but could include taking an annual leave day off work, refraining from domestic work for the day, wearing black in solidarity or staging a walkout during your lunch break."

"We also encourage any business owners in a position to close their services at no cost to workers, to do so for all or part of the day as a solidarity action."

Other organisations which have signed up to support the march include the Abortion Rights Campaign, Aims Ireland, Anti Racism Network Ireland, MASI, Trinity College Strike 4 Repeal Feminist Society, Maynooth Feminist Society, NUIG, NCAD Feminist Society, Limerick Feminist Network, Sex Workers Alliance Ireland, and People Before Profit, according to the Facebook post.

The post calls on any other organisations or businesses who would like to get involved to contact them at strike4repeal@gmail.com.

Good news for anyone who is hoping to do a J-1 this year.

The U.S embassy has confirmed that an additional 2,600 J-1 visas will be available for Irish students for summer 2017.

So if visiting the States has been a dream of yours, there's no time like the present, as there are now 7,000 work and travel slots available.

“The U.S. Embassy in Dublin is fully committed to the success of the J-1 programmes in Ireland," reads a statement from the embassy.

“In addition to the popular Summer Work and Travel program, Irish students can participate in the Camp Counsellor, Au Pair, and Intern programmes."

“The Embassy is working with Irish government representatives as well as U.S. and Irish program implementers to ensure Irish students continue to benefit from the J-1 program."

The additional visas come after fears in November that the J-1 visa would be abolished under President Donald Trump.

While students used to have a three week window in which to find work upon arriving in the U.S, restrictions were tightened last year, and now a job placement must be secured before they can travel.

The additional J-1 visas only apply to the four month long summer work programmes, and not to the 12 month graduate visa.

The Dublin Bus strike which was scheduled to take place tomorrow has been called off.

SIPTU representatives have said that the the dispute has been prevented in this case due to the union receiving confirmation that Dublin Bus management intend to keep their agreement on pensionable pay.

Union Organiser, John Murphy said: “Where unions and companies make agreements, particularly where the parties are tasked with the delivery of a vital public service, it is vital that they are honoured fully.

"This is particularly the case with public transport, as the impact of any dispute will not only affect the employees and the company involved but also the travelling public who are dependent on their services."

We don't think we'd be able to handle another day of strikes after last year!

Kim Kardashian is back and better than ever.

After her three-month hiatus, the reality star has resurfaced into the main stream and while she's at it, is giving us major outfit envy.

And, her V-Day getup didn't disappoint, either. Kim opted for minimal glam and wore a crop top, with a buttoned up velvet skirt and a black puffer jacket.

The best thing about her outfit though? It was partly Irish.

Yep, Kimmy wore the Vintage Escada Skirt from Irish fashion start-up, Open for Vintage.

The company only opened its doors ten months ago, so having Kim as a client is an unbelievable start for them.

Barack Obama and Joe Biden literally delighted us all with their bromance in the White House.

They just always seemed to have each other's backs and had the best craic ever together.

However, when they left the White House, we thought we'd be left with a bromance-shaped hole forever.

But alas, good ol' Ashton Kutcher is here to save the day.

Ashton was in the US senate today to talk about human trafficking and modern-day slavery, and while he as there, he had a little joke with John McCain and they also shared an air-kiss.

Lads, a new bromance has been born.

Drinking and college life; they just go hand in hand, don't they?

Along with ditching lectures, sleeping until noon and buying countless spiral-bound notebooks which you will never use, the media would have us believe that binge drinking is the sole preoccupation of most third-level students.

And while –  generally speaking – they're not that wide of the mark, the vast majority of us make it out of this phase of our lives with a clearer knowledge of our limits, and a distinct distaste for certain alcoholic drinks which we associate with 'that one time'.

We graduate university with a degree, a sense of achievement and a handful of experiences we'd rather not repeat… if we're lucky, that is.

The less fortunate among us take a little longer to establish that drinking to excess is a fool's game, and make a valiant attempt to adopt a more level-headed attitude towards alcohol.

And the desperately unlucky among us don't get a chance to make it out at all.

Earlier this week, the Miami University Police Department released a 25-page report outlining the events which led to the death of 18-year-old Erica Buschick – a freshman at Ohio's Miami University.

Found dead in her college dorm after a night of drinking last month, the run-up to Erica's death is comparable to nights experienced by thousands of other college students around the world.

After sharing two bottles of champagne with a friend, the pair made their way to a party where they drank vodka which Erica had decanted into a reusable bottle.

An hour and a half later, Erica was considered too drunk to gain entry into a local establishment, and was ultimately brought home to sleep it off in her dorm

The following morning, the 18-year-old was found dead on a beanbag; cold to the touch, another statistic in an incredibly bleak narrative.

And while Erica's story is, without question, the worst case scenario, the lightbulb moment which encourages an individual to address their attitude towards alcohol is far from consistent across the board.

I mean, what needs to happen before you realise you're drinking too much?

How many cases of The Fear do you have to endure before you start questioning whether you've been overdoing it on the ol' drink front?

Should it be when you find yourself wading across a river in order to rescue the handbag you sacrificed to the water the night before?

Or is it when you discover you're sporting a black eye, bruised cheek and split lip only after your mother wakes you up, hands you a mirror and informs you 'liberated' a stranger's bike and crashed it into a wall the night before?

Or how about when you find yourself in a stranger's home with no memory of how you got there, and a distinct feeling you'd rather be anywhere else in the world at that moment?

As a college student, none of these scenarios were enough to tell me that drinking to the stage where I black out and put myself in danger was a bad move.

I mean, in theory, I knew they weren't my finest hours, but with just enough filtering and some clever perspective, I could spin these incidents into funny anecdotes I would willingly share with other people.

"Oh, that vodka. What will it have me doing next?" "Look at my black eye! Amn't I just GAS?"

An outsider looking in could have come to the blithe conclusion that I was drinking to silence some inner demon or getting drunk to drown out the bigger issues, but they'd be wrong.

I was drinking cos it was great craic. I was drinking cos I enjoyed it. And I was drinking to get drunk because it was the done thing.

It was accepted.

Getting hammered was the name of the game, coming home with war stories for your friends (if you could remember them) was encouraged, and doing it over and over again throughout your time in college was par for the course.

With the benefit of hindsight, the vast majority of us would do anything to prevent our younger selves from engaging in the carry-on we deemed acceptable at the time.

While we may look back fondly on most nights out, many of us have a handful that we'd rather bring to our grave than repeat in polite company.

And in extreme cases, there are still some which we struggle to believe didn't end with the arrival of an ambulance or police car to our family home.

Most of us will always be grateful that we made it out of this period with a clearer perspective on the importance of our wellbeing, but if Erica's story teaches us anything, it's that not everyone gets the chance.

Love Actually was a romance movie for the ages.

We adored every couple and related to their plights, so we were totally delighted to hear that it's getting a sequel.

Red Nose Day Actually will be a special short-film in aid of Comic Relief and all of our favourite original cast members have signed up to take part.

Huge Grant, Rowan Atkinson, Matrine McCutcheon, Keira Knightly, Liam Neeson, Colin Firth and even The Walking Dead's Andrew Lincoln will all reprise their roles, which makes it waaay more exciting.

The sequel will be written by Richard Curtis, who was the original writer and director and his partner Emma Freud tweeted that filming will start tomorrow.

In the winter months, it can feel like you never see the sun.

You leave for work in the morning and it's dark out, and by the time you commute home, the night sky has fallen.

In these instances, it feels like you're never going to see the light of day again. So, you come home, flop on the couch and that's basically your entire week.

Pretty sh*t, right?

However, in Sweden, over the past two years, the employed population has been trialling six-hour working days. Whether you're a writer, a nurse, or in a business start-up, various companies implemented the rule.

And the outcome? Unsurprisingly, it led to employees feeling happier, healthier and more focused on their job.

Employees were still given the same wage despite the reduction in hours, but they made up for it in productivity.

A nurse from Sweden told The Guardian that after reducing her hours, she saw a huge difference in her day-to-day mood and energy levels.

"I used to be exhausted all the time. I would come home from work and pass out on the sofa. But not now.

"I am much more alert; I have much more energy for my work, and also for family life."

With the final results of the experiment being published next month, the preliminary findings saw that there was a 10 per cent reduction in sick leave over the last two years, 50 per cent felt healthier from the change and 20 per cent felt happier.

The thing is though, it might be some time before we see this in Ireland. While the majority of the workforce in Sweden were happier as a result of the change, it also saw a bit of backlash.

The trial saw employers hiring more people to fill in for the hours lost, and obviously, it was an expensive trial to conduct.

In Ireland, the average working day is 8.5 hours (if not longer), however last year, according to The Irish Times, union officials said that a 30-hour week would not be a target in our future.

It's a shame because there's so much more to life than work.

How many of us are knackered by the time we come home? Or so stressed out by the long hours that we snap at loved ones? Sometimes you have to ask yourself if it is worth it; but then again, you're lucky to have a job when nearly 10 per cent of the population is out of work and struggling.

Image result for family time

It's the simple things like having more family time, being more socially active and having a few hours a day for yourself, that are missed in society and they would be openly welcomed by many.

Hopefully one day, Ireland will be on its way to reduced working hours and higher salaries for all, but until then, we'll just have to cross our fingers and our toes and just about everything else…
