Yearly Archives: 2017

There is literally nothing better than settling in after a long day with a glass vino, so how amazing does a whole day committed to the red, white or rosé stuff sound?

Today, ladies and gentlemen, is National Drink Wine Day, and that's pretty much the best excuse to drink a grape-filled tipple we've ever heard.

From the wine handbag to wine contouring and face masks, we're clearly big fans of the beverage.

"The purpose of National Drink Wine Day is to spread the love and health benefits of wine," reads the National Drink Wine Day website

"Wine has played an important role in history, religion and relationships."

"We embrace the positive benefits of wine such as new friends, reduced risk of heart disease and the enhancement of food and life."

While the day may be a Stateside occasion, we see no reason why it can't be celebrated on the Emerald Isle too.

I mean, it is Saturday after all, the perfect day of the week to indulge.

As if we'd need an excuse…

A gin and cake combination? Say no more…

Check out this DELICIOUS recipe courtesy of The Gin Baker, you'll be glad you did!

What you'll need:

125g of unsalted butter, at room temperature

125g of caster sugar

125g of self-raising flour

2 eggs

2 tbsp of milk

½ tsp rose water

For the lime syrup:

Juice of 1 lime

75ml of water

2 tbsp caster sugar

For the buttercream icing:

140g unsalted butter

300g icing sugar

50ml raspberry gin liqueur

Pink food colouring

What you'll do:

Preheat your oven to 180ºC.

To make your cupcakes, cream the butter and sugar together in a bowl. Add your eggs one at a time and combine well.

Add your sifted flour and milk and mix until you have a smooth cake mix. Stir in your rose water.

Line a 12-hole muffin tin with paper cupcake cases and spoon the mixture evenly into the cases.

You can use an ice cream scoop for this to get an even amount in each case. Then place your cakes in the centre of the oven for between 18-20 minutes.

Remove your cupcakes from the oven once they are golden brown on top and a skewer can be placed through the centre and come out clean.

Leave your cupcakes to rest for 10 minutes in the tin and make your glaze.

In a saucepan, add your lime juice, water and caster sugar bring to the boil over a high heat. Reduce the heat and leave to simmer for 5-10 minutes, or until reduced and thickened.

Brush or spoon your syrup on top of your cakes whilst they are still warm and your syrup is hot.

To make your Raspberry Gin butter cream, cream together the butter and sugar using an electric handheld whisk until light and fluffy.

Gradually add in the gin until it is all incorporated. If the mixture begins to split, add a few more teaspoons of icing sugar. Add a capful of food colouring and combine.

Pipe or spoon the raspberry icing onto the top of each cake. Then top each cake with a raspberry, a small slice of lime and a mint leaf.

Piers Morgan has been angering quite a few bibliophiles on Twitter in recent weeks.

Piers has been in a battle of 180 characters with JK Rowling for quite a while, as the two have had some political disagreements.

In the midst of the war of words, Harry Potter fans have begun tweeting Piers Morgan the contents of the Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone novel in it's entirety, and the journalist has had it up to here with the Hogwarts-themed tweets.

Seeking some respite, Piers tweeted Fifty Shades of Grey author E.L James, asking for a quote from her from one of her popular erotic novels.

E.L James proceeded to perfectly troll the journalist, by tweeting back a line from Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.

Clearly missing the joke, Piers responded to the perceived dig with: "Fortunately none of your characters would ever risk over-exposure…"

The quote is, of course, not even from Fifty Shades of Grey, but is in fact from a scene in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets between Defence Against the Dark Arts Professor Gilderoy Lockhart and Harry Potter.

Clearly E.L James has JK Rowling's back in this battle.

The Harry Potter author also made a pretty funny joke at Piers's expense on Valentine's Day, as she posted a gushing review about her contribution to children's literacy.

While JK Rowling feigned the anonymity of the post for the sake of satire, it was quickly revealed on Twitter that it was Piers Morgan himself who had written the piece a few years ago.

"I bet he's having a monumental trumpesque meltdown," replied one follower.

It might be time for Piers to take a little Twitter break now, no?

Trad music is one of Ireland's most unique cultural aspects, and it sets us apart from the rest of the world.

Playing instruments can be a family affair, so if a love of trad runs in your blood, then there is an upcoming competition you may want to hear about.

The Ray D'Arcy Show is hunting high and low for families who love playing traditional music together, to compete for the title of "Ireland's Traddest Family" live on RTÉ One

"We’ve had a phenomenal response the length and breadth of the country – the talent out there is unbelievable."

"Applications are still open, so, if you and your family love playing traditional music together or you know a family that fits the bill – we’d love to hear from you" said Ray D'Arcy.

Singer-songwriter John Spillane, fiddle player Zoe Conway and Mike Hanrahan of Stockton’s Wing are set to star on the judging panel, so the pressure is on!

The closing date for applications is February 24, and if successful, all family members must be available to travel to Dublin to perform live on The Ray D’Arcy Show on March 11.

To enter the show, email traddestfamily@rte.ie and send a videos and mp3s up to 2 minutes long of your trad clan playing to be in with a chance of winning.

The champion clan will hold the title of ‘"Ireland’s Traddest Family" and will also get a luxury family trip to FOTA resort, a chance to play at St Patrick's festival weekend and VIP tickets to the St. Patrick’s Day parade, which sounds like a pretty amazing prize to us.

Are you a total Disney geek or do you know a person who is?

Well then, it's time to get very, VERY excited, because you can now buy the clam bed from The Little Mermaid.

Little mermaid bed is a shell shaped bed. This princess bed will also protect your little girl, and help her to dream and become a under sea princess.

The beautiful mer-tastic bed is available through Portuguese interior company Circu, which makes "magical furniture."

This bed is an absolute dream come true, but sadly is made for children (and short people perhaps?).

Sky B Plane makes the crib-to-bed transition as painless as possible. The decorative suitcases are storage compartments and allow the kid to climb up and down the airplane

The Little Mermaid bed is six-and-a-half-feet tall, and is equipped with a blue night-light, so you can feel like you're floating in the ocean.

Now, before you start planning your mermaid DREAM, it is important to note that this magical bed is NOT cheap (naturally!)

The bed costs a whopping $16,000 (15,000), which is absolutely outrageous… but if you were to win the lotto it may be OK?

If mermaids aren't your thing, which would be weird, the company also sell other amazing beds that include hot air balloons and rockets.

Rocky Rocket is a armchair completely handmade with light and sound system controlled by a mobile app.

Pop these gorgeous beds on your wish list if you fancy it, but remember "the seaweed is always greener, in somebody else's lake."

They are very fun to look at!

It's a well documented fact that Paris Hilton helped Kim Kardashian's catapult to stardom.

The selfie queen used to work as Paris's personal assistant, and was papped with the hotel heiress at every possible moment.

Paris was the ultimate style icon in the noughties, and now Kim is paying homage to the heiresses' signature platinum blonde look.

Taking to Snapchat, the reality TV star showcased a new icey bob while wishing happy birthday to the inventor of the Juicy Couture tracksuit trend.

“Today’s vibes channelling Paris! Happy Birthday @ParisHilton Can’t wait to celebrate with you soon!” Kim tweeted, in honour of her bestie.

A post shared by Kendall (@kendalljenner) on

Kim isn't the first Kardashian to take their style cues form the noughties icon this year.

Kendall rocked a sparkly, slinky silver mini dress to her 21st birthday, a dress which was almost a direct replica of a party frock Paris wore for her own 21st birthday.

"I wanted something that was part '20s, part 'vintage Paris Hilton vibes,' so I collaborated with the designer Antoine Salameh to create the perfect dress," the model said on her website.

A post shared by Kylie (@kyliejenner) on

Kylie has also been channelling the blonde socialite, and rocked the modern reincarnation Paris's signature Juicy Couture look over on Instagram a few weeks ago.

We can just image Paris taking Regina George-style credit for the Kardashian's fame.

I like invented her, you know what I mean?

Are you looking for love, or simply want to get your current lover down the aisle? Well, we may just have your answer.

According to Emily Popp, Deputy Editor at HelloGiggles, she got a gift last year from her brother and his girlfriend that was meant to help her land a husband.

No, it was not a subscription to a dating site – it was a lipstick (we're not joking).

The lipstick was from Estée Lauder's Pure Colour Crystal collection, and apparently the ingredients are renowned in Japan for magical matchmaking powers.

On Estée Lauder's Japanese Website, the review comments are filled with women who swear the pink lippy led to their engagement.

Incase you're wondering, there are no official "rules" to how often you need to wear the lipstick or when to wear it "for best results."

We have to admit, we are not at ALL convinced by this whole concept, but it makes for some interesting reading, right?

Maybe the placebo effect is factor — if you believe it works, you may find yourself with a ring in no time.

According to a recent study, women who suffer from severe PMS, also known as premenstrual dysphoric disorder or PMDD, may have an irregularity in their genetic composition which could explain the severity of their symptoms.

A PMDD sufferer experiences a disabling anxiety or depression in addition to typical PMS symptoms – a condition which effects approximately 2 to 5 per cent of menstruating women.

Examining the potential causes for the condition, experts have identified that sufferers exhibit a specific irregularity when it comes to genetic composition at a molecular level.

The study, which was published in the Journal of Molecular Psychiatry, elaborated on previous research which suggested that women with PMDD have a different sensitivity to the sex hormones released during menstruation.

After providing 10 PMDD sufferers with drugs to block the release of sex hormones typically released during their periods ― estradiol or progesterone – the women did not experience their typical symptoms.

Interestingly, the symptoms returned when the women were again exposed to the sex hormones.

After examining sufferers' cells alongside non-sufferers' cells, researchers established that the part of a cell which responds to hormones were different in sufferers of the condition.

Co-author and Chief of the Behavioral Endocrinology Branch at the National Institute of Mental Health, Peter Schmidt, elaborated on the findings while speaking to The Huffington Post.

"It’s the first evidence that this differential hormone sensitivity in PMDD is based on a biological difference that’s occurring on a cellular level,” he said.

"Many women with this condition feel that it’s neglected,” he continued. "Either their doctors tell them it’s normal to be moody around their periods or they say it’s in the women’s heads."

The results have reportedly been welcomed by sufferers of the condition.

We've been picking up on a few major trends for Spring/Summer, and a print that keeps popping up is gingham.

Once the exclusive territory of picnic blankets and jam jar lids, the quaint print has had a modern makeover, causing it to creep into the S/S collections of some of our favourite high street stores.

Top €13.00, Crop top €13.00, both Penneys

The cousin of plaid, the picnic-perfect print was seen on the runways at House of Holland, Prada and Peter Jensen, so it's not surprising that everyone from River Island to Penneys has picked up on the trend.

We love both of these gingham tops from Penneys, and we can see them perfectly pairing with some slouchy mom jeans and platform runners for summer.

Top  €24.99, Trousers €29.99 both New Look

New Look is also getting in on the look, creating pieces that will incorporate seamlessly into a stylish work wardrobe.

This gingham blouse also features embroidery detailing, checking off another major trend box.

Playsuit €45.00, Flats €37.00, both River Island

Keeping things super edgy, this River Island playsuit would look killer when paired with a leather biker jacket and boots during festival season, and with Forbidden Fruit just around the corner, there is no harm in planning your outfits early.

These metallic flats are giving us major Miu Miu vibes.

The studded strap and silver finish toughen up the gingham ribbon tie in the best possible way.

Slip dress €28.00, Ruffled dress €35.00, both Pretty Little Thing

Pretty Little Thing currently has the monopoly on gorgeous gingham dresses.

This dainty little slip would look divine with a T-shirt underneath, 90s style, or give it a more modern take by layering it under an oversized, sheer T-shirt dress.

And the this ruffed midi? We're getting major "VIP section at Coachella" feels from this one.
