Yearly Archives: 2017

We've been waiting in anticipation for this music video since we saw Ed Sheeran and Saoirse Ronan shoot it in Galway, and now it's finally here.

The video brings you around the streets and pubs of Galway, passing by Irish dancers and buskers on the street.

It's also totally star-studded with celebs such as Saoirse Ronan, Tommy Tiernan, Hector Ó hEochagáin, and Peter Coonan starring in the video.

The majority of the scenes were shot in O'Connor's pub in Galway, and it perfectly sums up the craic of an Irish session.

Seriously, this video will make you proud to be Irish.

For almost three decades, society has been fascinated by the concept of cosmetic surgery.

And while much attention is focussed on the final result, we’re less familiar with the process each woman goes through in order to address the area of her body she feels would benefit from augmentation.

Thankfully, hugely popular personal trainer, Siobhan O'Hagan, has been candid about her breast augmentation surgery thereby allowing thousands of women a better insight into a process which many a year contemplate.

As a dedicated personal trainer with thousands of devoted followers, you would be forgiven for thinking that Siobhan was positively brimming with confidence, but this simply wasn't the case.

While she undoubtedly personified the term 'FitFam', the Dubliner wasn't fully content with her appearance, saying: "I was getting leaner and leaner but at the same time I didn’t feel very feminine."

"I just wanted to put on a bikini or sports bra and not have to stuff them with padding," she explained.

Interestingly, Siobhan's concerns about her breast size materialised long before she embarked on the health and fitness journey she has documented extensively on Instagram and Snapchat.

Revealing that she approached The Avoca Clinic two years before dedicating herself to fitness goals, Siobhan explained that her first visit made her realise that augmentation was a step for her future, not her present.

"I took the money that I was going to spend on that breast augmentation, and ended up spending it on a personal training course. It just wasn’t the right time but everything happens for a reason," she explains.

But after establishing herself as one of Ireland's top fitness and nutrition gurus, Siobhan decided July 2016 was the right time to revisit her interest in augmentation as she no longer wanted to 'fix' her body, but instead celebrate her choices.

"It was so different when I was going in this time for my consultation," she admitted.

"I was so happy with my body and it really wasn’t something I was doing to fix myself, it was just something I wanted. I didn’t see any negative reasons and I’m delighted with it.”

Going from a 34A to A 34C, Siobhan is elated by the results of her augmentation.

"I get so many emails from women, who’ve gone into the Avoca Clinic and they’re really excited about it. They never really have a proper question for me, but I love being able to tell them just do it, it’ll be the best decision you’ve ever made."

Combining her dedication to heath and fitness with the service provided by The Avoca Clinic, Siobhan admits she's never been happier.

"I feel like I’m boasting if I go on about how happy I am, and how well everything worked out!" she admits.

If scrolling through pictures of cute puppies and happy goats gives you that warm fuzzy feeling you’re not alone.

It can be so easy to get lost in all the big eyes and fluffy tails, but don't worry, you're actually doing yourself a favour.

New research has revealed that this enjoyable pastime can actually make you more productive.

Yep.

Researchers at Hiroshima University showed three groups people a series of images before asking them to complete a task similar to the board game Operation.

The first group were shown pictures of delicious food, the second were shown photographs of fully grown animals while the third group were shown images of baby animals.

Turns out the group exposed to the cute and cuddly bay animal pictures actually outperformed the other when it came to dropping the tiny body part into the holes.

Now for the science. According to Red Online, the researchers behind the study explained that human are naturally programmed to be more alert when their nurturing instincts are stimulated – which actually makes a lot of sense.

Scientist, Simon Watt explained to the BBC: 'Human babies are born too early to be independent and so we have evolved as a species to make nurturing them one of our priorities.’’

‘’Caring for babies not only involves tenderness but also requires vigilance against possible threats.’’

So, scroll away till your heart's content, and if your boss says anything, just tell them it's actually been proven to increase productivity!

Tánaiste, Francis Fitzgerald has today launched the new National Strategy for Women and Girls, calling Ireland ‘’an unfinished democracy in terms of representation of women.’’

The reports highlights almost 140 actions aimed at creating equality across government departments.

The Irish Congress of Trade Unions said that a number of measures included in strategy had the capacity “to ensure real improvements for women workers, if they are fully-implemented and delivered upon.”

While the Tánaiste said she feels equal to her male colleagues, she recognised that this might not always be the case.

"It's about making sure there is a critical mass of women involved in decision making across our society, and we still don't have that," she said.

In response to the publication of the National Women’s Strategy, Congress Equality Officer, David Joyce, highlighted the issue of the gender pay gap and noted that the strategy includes an ‘’important new provision’’ on this topic.

He explained, ‘’Companies of more than 50 employees [will be] required to complete wage surveys and report gender pay gaps.’’

‘’This is an important step in tackling gender-based pay inequality and we look forward to seeing this measure fully implemented.’’

The publication also includes plan to extend the provision of breast feeding breaks in the workplace.

However, despite the positive steps forward, David Joyce did say that Congress was disappointed at the strategy’s failure to commit to the Living Wage for female workers.

The Coalition to Repeal the Eighth Amendment also expressed shock at the omission of plans to widen abortion services.

They said, ‘’It is bizarre that the Strategy makes no reference to the widening of abortion services, beyond a bland mention of the forthcoming report by the Citizen’s Assembly.’’

At last!

Put away those winter coats ladies – there’s some glorious sunshine on the way.

Temperatures are expected to reach highs 17C this week, with Shannon Airport even recording temperatures of 20C on Tuesday.

Met Eireann forecaster, Vincent O’Shea told Independent.ie: "It's going to be dry and sunny for the rest of the week, including the weekend.’’

‘’It won't be beach weather as such but it will be fine and dry although overall it might be a little breezier than it was on Monday and Tuesday.’’

"It could be slightly cooler along the east coast due to sea breezes but it'll get gradually warmer as you move inland.’’

Temperatures are expected to drop ever so slightly over the weekend with highs of 15C forecast for Friday and Saturday.

But wait, it gets better.

Early indications suggest that temperature could reach a balmy 21C early next week.

Summer has finally arrived!

Ovarian cancer effects hundreds of Irish women every year.

However, many of these cases are not diagnosed until the later stages of the disease.

This is largely due to the fact that symptoms usually take a long time to appear, and when they do they are often mistaken for other illnesses.

According to a new study, there’s now a way to accurately detect the disease in the early stages.

Research has revealed that regular blood tests could be the key.

Doctors and researchers monitored a group of ‘high-risk’ women (carriers of the ovarian cancer gene) over a ten year period and noted that cancerous tumours were detected much earlier when the women underwent blood tests three times a year.

Although this is a promising development when it comes to the early detection of ovarian cancer, it must be stressed that the study would need to be extended over the next few years in order to accurately determine how many lives could be saved.

Symptoms of ovarian cancer include, bloated feeling, persistent swollen abdomen, pain or dragging sensation in your lower abdomen or side and vague indigestion or nausea, among others.

At the moment there is no national screening programme in Ireland and women who feel they may be at risk are advised to visit their GP.

And remember, smear tests will not pick up the signs of ovarian cancer.

It’s fair to say that Ivanka Trump probably doesn’t deserve a huge portion of the flak she receives, after all she’s found herself in an extremely difficult position – one she never asked for in the first place.

Following the election of her father, Donald Trump, as US President, Ivankas’s clothing line was dropped by a number of US retailers and just last week she was booed and jeered by crowds in Berlin when she defended her father’s family values.

It has now emerged that during the presidential campaign, Ivanka became frustrated with her father’s unapologetic nature.

When Access Hollywood released audio tapes which showed Donald Trump bragging about sexually assaulting women, the presidential candidate offered a lackluster apology to those who were offended by his words.

The campaign team knew this wouldn’t be enough, and according to a report by The New York Times, Ivanka urged him to give a ‘’full-throated apology’’. Rather unsurprisingly, Trump refused and Ivanka left the room on the verge of tears.

Ivanka kept her opinions quiet with regards to many issues that popped up during the campaign but according to Glamour, the business woman has hinted her disapproval of some things her father says, though she prefers not to reveal those opinions publicly.

Following her father’s election, Ivanka took up an official position in the White House, although she admitted to The Times that she still has a lot to learn.

“I do believe that in time I’ll get to the right place. In the short run I’ll have missteps, and, in some cases, I’ll take shots that I could have avoided if I had publicly said what I think.”

If the vast majority of battles with your brother or boyfriend boil down to their inability to admit they’re wrong, you’re not alone.

And while stubbornness and inflexibility are far from specific to one gender, a recent study has revealed that the presence of testosterone has a lot to do with an individual’s belief they are right… even when they are wrong.

According to professor of Behavioural Economics at Caltech, Colin Camerer, high levels of testosterone can prevent an individual from questioning themselves, and can cause a spike in confidence levels.

Dividing a group of individuals in half, scientists administered testosterone to one while leaving the other without.

Those who were high in testosterone answered 20 per cent fewer questions correctly than the other group, and ultimately struggled to reach the right answer.

"What we found was the testosterone group was quicker to make snap judgments on brain teasers where your initial guess is usually wrong,” he explained.

“The testosterone is either inhibiting the process of mentally checking your work or increasing the intuitive feeling that 'I'm definitely right.”

“If you’re more confident, you’ll feel like you’re right and will not have enough self-doubt to correct mistake,” Professor Camerer added.

We all remember a time when we thought we were too mature to be at home and have our mammy feed us – but honestly, how many of us wish we could go back home and have our dinner handed to us every evening?

The gals at SHEmazing! HQ gave a unanimous hands up, as did Spin 1038 presenter, Daniella Moyles.

The model and DJ spoke to us about growing up in Ireland and her favourite family meal times.

"I don't miss [family meal times] because we still have them. I miss having someone cook for me every night!" she said as her mam, Pauline, sat by her side.

A post shared by @daniellamoyles on

"Family meals were really important in our house," said Pauline. "It was a chance for us to all get together and have a chat."

However, Daniella realises that family time is very different nowadays.

"It's a totally different scenario. We grew up differently to kids that are growing up now. My dad was a chef and he worked long hours so it was always, me, my brother and my mam at the table for dinner.

"I didn't realise it, but they were great times. And at the weekends my dad would be there, so it was great to have everyone together."

If you grew up with siblings, then you'll know that dinner time wasn't always peaceful, and it was the same for Daniella.

"My brother is four years younger than me so I always saw him as the baby.

"I'm sure we had terrible fights at the table growing up, but the worst I can remember is pulling a rug from under him and he cracked his head on a plug," to which Pauline sighs, "Oh God yeah, I remember that."

But even with all the fights (and head-bashing), Daniella says that they were still a "special" time.

We all remember these family meal times so fondly, it's a wonder why they aren't so popular now, but Daniella puts it down to one sole thing; our phones.

A post shared by @daniellamoyles on

"I don't think the biggest distraction is TV or anything because we live in a world where everything is on demand.

"It's our phones that are getting in the way now. Mine is practically glued to me no matter what I'm doing," she said.

We think it's time to put the phones away, have the chats with our family, and enjoy meal times once again.

As Daniella's mum said, "it was a priority then," and still should be today.

Disney princesses were role models for a lot of us growing up, but have you ever stopped to think who their female influencers were?

Think about it, The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, not a mammy to be seen, and while Cinderella and Snow White had step-mothers, they were seriously lacking in the love and affection departments.

Many Disney classics are based on stories by the Brothers Grimm, and one theory suggests that mother figures rarely featured in the fairy tales due to the high rates of death during childbirth in the 18th and 19th centuries, but others have speculated the reason could be much more personal.

According to Disney producer, Don Hahn, there’s a theory among those who work at the company that Walt Disney made the decision to leave mothers out of the films due to the overwhelming guilt he felt about the sudden death of his own mother, Flora.

She died from carbon monoxide poisoning in the house Walt had bought for her.

In an interview with Glamour, producer Don explained: "He had the studio guys come over and fix the furnace, but when his mom and dad moved in, the furnace leaked and his mother died.’’

‘’The housekeeper came in the next morning and pulled his mother and father out on the front lawn. His father was sick and went to the hospital, but his mother died."

With recent films like Frozen and Enchanted following suit, it looks like the 'motherless-princess' trope is set to continue, but just like the sisterly love seen in Frozen, we hope Disney can find a way to include more positive female influencers for the characters to learn from.

Proposing to someone is a massive deal, but you would hope that you would have a good enough grasp of the relationship to know what their response would be.

Unfortunately, one lad clearly wasn't clued in to what his partner wanted, a fact that was made all too cringingly clear when she turned down his very public proposal.

According to eye witnesses at  Boston's Fenway Park, one gent decided that the best way to propose to his love was with a sky-high declaration in front of the packed park during a game using the Jumbotron Kiss Cam.

Unfortunately, when the message appeared, the couple were having a bit of a tiff, and she rejected his proposal in front of the thousands of attendees.

In possibly the most awkward series of events in history, the couple continued to fight as spectators watched on and essentially live-tweeted the unfolding events.

It also reportedly cost around €400 to get a proposal up on the Jumbotron.

Unfortunately, this lad is all out of love as well as being out of pocket.

An 18-year-old has designed a bra that can detect the signs of breast cancer.

The Mexican teenager impressed scientists and won the top prize at the Global Student Entrepreneur Awards for his design, which seeks to alert women of breast cancer before it progresses.

Julian Rios Cantu designed the bra, which is called EVA, and is fitted with around 200 biosensors that monitor changes in temperature, weight and the shape of your boobs.

For example, if the bra detects a higher temperature in the chest it could suggest that there's a greater blood flow to the area, possibly made by a tumour.

"As soon as there is a malformation in the breast or a tumour, there is an over-vascularisation; so the more [flow of] blood, the higher the temperature," Julian told El Universal.

"[It] allows us to have the breasts in the same position [so it can detect change] and it doesn’t have to be worn more than one hour a week."

Julian explained that he thought of the idea after his mother suffered from cancer and had to have both of her breasts removed.

The student won a $20,000 prize and beat out 13 other young entrepreneurs in the competition.
