bra

There’s one debate that has been dividing women for quite some time.

Bra on or bra off when it come to sleep?

Some of us spend our evening commute dreaming of the moment we finally get to take the damn thing off while others can wear them for 24 hours straight and barely notice they're there. (Sorry, but how?)

Well, according to Mia Talmor, a plastic surgeon at the New York Presbyterian Hospital, neither option is necessarily better than the other.

However, she did confirm that, contrary to popular belief, there is no evidence that wearing a bra to bed will prevent your boobs from sagging.

She told SELF: "Bras are designed to help with vertical positioning. But when you’re lying in bed, you need more horizontal support."

However, if you still insist on wearing a bra while sleeping, it is important to get the fit just right.

Plastic surgeon, Matthew Schulman also spoke to SELF, and recommended women wear ‘’a supporting bra made of breathable fabric that does not have padding or underwire’’ while sleeping.

He warned of the possible effects wearing a tight fitting bra could have on your health:

‘Wearing a bra that is too tight can inhibit flow of lymphatic fluid, this can cause lymphedema (swelling) of the breasts, which can lead to pain and some temporary skin discoloration.’

And let's be real, that doesn't sound great.

An 18-year-old has designed a bra that can detect the signs of breast cancer.

The Mexican teenager impressed scientists and won the top prize at the Global Student Entrepreneur Awards for his design, which seeks to alert women of breast cancer before it progresses.

Julian Rios Cantu designed the bra, which is called EVA, and is fitted with around 200 biosensors that monitor changes in temperature, weight and the shape of your boobs.

For example, if the bra detects a higher temperature in the chest it could suggest that there's a greater blood flow to the area, possibly made by a tumour.

"As soon as there is a malformation in the breast or a tumour, there is an over-vascularisation; so the more [flow of] blood, the higher the temperature," Julian told El Universal.

"[It] allows us to have the breasts in the same position [so it can detect change] and it doesn’t have to be worn more than one hour a week."

Julian explained that he thought of the idea after his mother suffered from cancer and had to have both of her breasts removed.

The student won a $20,000 prize and beat out 13 other young entrepreneurs in the competition.

It seems like we've been doing everything wrong our whole lives, and the latest is something most women do every single day.

According to a lingerie expert who spoke to Bustle, we've been putting our bras on wrong, and we should be using the 'scoop and swoop' method.

Apparently, you have to loosen the straps of your bra first, and then place the bra on the right hook (also, you should start on the loosest hook and move your way up the older the bra gets).

Once your bra is on, you then tighten the straps and scoop your boobs up with your hands, lifting them up and out.

First of all, we don't know about you, but does anybody else find it incredibly difficult to tighten the straps of your bra when it's on? You have to reach around all the way to the back and that can be sore.

We'd honestly say there's a million and one ways to put on a bra and everyone is bound to do it differently, so we're calling BS on this.

Remember when cleavage just used to be a small bit of boob showing from the top of your t-shirt? A lot has changed since then.

Now we have underboob, sideboob, middleboob… The list goes on.

A while ago, a bizarre underboob bra surfaced which looked very uncomfortable.

But now, there's the sideboob bra, and to be honest, it looks OK(ish).

ASOS has designed a mesh bralette which will let you show off your sideboob 'til your heart's content.

However, if you're anything over a C cup, you're probably LOLing at the screen because… gravity.

But if you fancy giving it a go, you can get it here for only €25.35. Happy sideboob-ing!

Bras are tricky business. Finding the right size is only half the battle, because even the most perfect bra has its flaws. Falling straps, poking underwires and tricky necklines are just some of the problems we have to deal with every now and then.

But instead of moving on to a new bra (which is mighty expensive), we've come across some hacks that will hold your bra tight until the very end! Never have a pesky bra problem again:

1. Use a paper clip to pin straps

Instead of buying a racer bra or a bra clip, using a paper clip works just as well to pin your straps together temporarily.

2. DIY a bra extension

Low-back dresses and tops are super cute, but they're totally ruined when your bra strap shows. Instead, use an old bra to make a bra extension. Here's a video to show you exactly how to do it (it's actually quite easy!).

3. Stop straps from digging into your shoulders

This can be the most annoying thing EVER, especially if your straps are small. But shoulder pads for bra straps are actually a thing (who knew?) and will totally change the way your bra feels on you. Hello comfort!

4. After washing, lay your bra FLAT

If you hang them up they will lose their shape. And never put them in the dryer – the heat will cause the elastic to wear away faster.

5. Store your bras with the cups open

Never fold one cup into the other because it destroys the fibres in the moulding, resulting in a tangled and bumpy bra. And nobody wants that.

6. Use foam padding to fix underwire

It happens to all of us, but it's still super annoying when the underwire of your bra pops out and pokes you. Grab some foam padding plasters from your local pharmacy and stick it around the small hole in your bra. Simple!

We know, it's one of the most embarrassing moments of your life.

Do you make an appointment to be fitted? Do you just go in and take your top off? Will she see EVERYTHING?!

So many questions!

But, unfortunately a lot of women are in the dark about the right bra size – and in this case, ignorance is certainly not bliss.

It will become sore, dig into your sides and leave you with unflattering red marks.

So, if (like many) you're unsure about wearing the right bra size, here are some fool-proof ways to tell.

1. You have bulges galore.

2. The back of your bra is riding high.

3. Quardra-boob!

4. Your straps leave a last impression.

5. Your cups are only half-full.

6. Your straps are falling down.

If you have any of these signs, we're afraid it's time to say so-long to your bestie.

We really didn't expect this, but it turns out that the way you put your bra on says a lot more about you than you think.

There's no right or wrong way to put on a bra, but everyone has their own little way they have gotten used to and think is the most convenient.

So just stop for a second and think.. How do you put your bra on?

According to Patti Wood, a body language and human behaviour expert, the way we choose to put on our bra says a lot about us.

She says: "There are four distinct personality type – drivers, influencers, supporters and careful correctors – who tent to have very unique ways of doing things, even small tasks."

"Everything you do – and the way you do it – comes together to form a story about yourself, and there's no reason your undergarments shouldn't be a part of that."

You use a back-clasp bra, and clasp it in the back

You're a supporter. This means you are traditional and you do things the straight forward way.

You clasp your bra at the front then rotate it to the back

You're an influencer. You like to look the part and feel sexy and you gravitate towards more fancy underwear.

You use a front clasping bra

You're a driver. You are efficient and have no time to mess around with trying to reach the clasp at the back, you want to get things done the easy way.

You clasp your bra then slide it over your head

You're a carful corrector. You want to make sure things are done right so you clasp the bra and make sure it's done properly before putting it on.

As women, we all know the struggle of finding the perfect bra, a well needed companion to support us and lift us up. Whatever your size, it is important to be familiar with what to look for when bra shopping.

1. Get fitted
Getting fitted for a bra in a shop with the help of an expert will give you an idea of your size so that you will be more confident to do it alone in future.

2. Try then buy
Would you spend forty euro on a dress without trying it on first? The same goes for bras. Shapes and sizes change from shop to shop so it is always a better idea to try then buy.

3. Don’t stress
Women can often stress out when they realise what their bra size is. Whether it's disappointment or pure horror, don’t panic.

4. The two finger rule
If you find yourself spilling out of the bra either at the cups or at the back, keep searching. Yes, bras should be fairly snug so that you should be able to fit only two fingers under the band, but bras that are too tight are just uncomfortable and not worth it. Equally, you don’t want it to be too loose either.

5. Buying a good quality bra now will save you money in the long run
Even though it may seem like a lot of money to spend on one bra, it will last aaages. Buying cheaper bras may seem like better value at the time but they get worn out more quickly due to everyday wear, and being washed. We all have that one bra we love, why not make it a good quality one?
