Yearly Archives: 2017

There are few among us that don't rely on certain things to make our busy lives that little bit easier, right?

With that in mind, we put a call out for the gadget, gizmo, app or establishment that makes your day-to-day simpler in an effort to pay tribute at the inaugural SHEmazing HP Awards on May 4.

And as nation of foodies, it's no real surprise that food-focussed delivery app, Just Eat, took the crown at our gala in the Mansion House.

Up against stiff competition in the form of My Taxi, Chopped, Clarisonic Facial Cleanser and Water Wipes Cleansing Wipes, Just Eat reigned supreme.

Launched in April 2008, ordering on the go became so much easier and then these guys decided to grace our iPhone and Android devices.

Taking to social media on the night of the event, the Just Eat folk couldn't resist a food-related celebratory tweet, writing: "Winner winner chicken dinner! Thanks to everyone who voted for us in the Makes Life Easy Award!"

You guys earned it!

When it comes to down-time, you guys refuse to settle for less (and rightly so).

So when it came to crowning the winner of the best spa in Ireland for our inaugural SHEmazing HP Awards, we knew we needed your help.

With your fingers on the pulse when it comes to treatments, pamper packages and spa sessions, you ultimately decided that Seafield Hotel and Spa deserved to take home the Pamper Me award on May 4 at our Mansion House gala.

Located in Co Wexford, the destination allowed visitors to luxuriate in serene surrounds before sampling some of the spa's wholly indulgent treatment packages – an idyllic spot for a much-needed getaway.

Taking to Twitter to celebrate the win, the resort paid tribute to their dedicated staff and their thousands of new and returning visitors.

Congratulations, guys!

We were about to get excited when we heard temperatures would be up to 22 degrees this week, however Met Éireann has warned us to not whip out the shorts and tank tops just yet.

It is predicted that "changeable" weather will continue into the week ahead, however most days will be "breezy and cloudy."

Today, it will be "mostly cloudy at first with patches of rain, drizzle and fog and some heavy pockets of rain over parts of Leinster and Ulster."

However, as the day progresses, we will experience some "bright spells," with maximum temperatures reaching 15 to 19 degrees.

Tomorrow will be cloudy at first, with some rain, but will gradually brighten up with sunny spells developing into the day and highs of 19 degrees.

That's basically how it will be for the rest of the week, and as we reach the weekend, early indications say it will be "relatively cool and fresh with sunny spells and scattered showers."

Following the execrable Manchester attack which claimed the lives of 22 adults and children, Ariana Grande released a statement last week promising to return to the city for a benefit concert to raise funds for the victims and their families.

And according to the latest reports, Ariana has asked other artists to take part in the tribute.

Hollywood Life claims that the singer has invited Nicki Minaj, Selena Gomez, Chris Brown and Jennifer Hudson, among others, to join her on stage.

"I want to thank my fellow musicians and friends for reaching out to be a part of our expression of love for Manchester," her statement read.

The 23-year-old has suspended her worldwide tour until June 5, with the benefit concert due to take place on June 4.

She also plans to hold a minute's silence to pay tribute to the victims, as well as deliver a speech during her performance.

"We will continue in honour of the ones we lost, their loved ones, my fans and all affected by this tragedy. I will think of them with everything I do for the rest of my life," her statement concluded.

The speed limits on arterial roads will not be reduced during this phase, however it is said that this will be discussed as part of phase three in 2018.

Congratulations are in order for Charlotte Church – she's pregnant with her third child.

The singer was mid-performance with her Pop Dungeon Band at the Birminham Pride Festival last night when she broke the news to her fans.

The 31-year-old took a cue from Beyonce and tenderly rubbed her growing baby bump on stage, however she has yet to reveal when she is due.

Charlotte certainly didn't shy away either, as she hit the stage wearing thigh high boots, fishtnet tights and a sequin top which accentuated her pregnant stomach.

Charlotte already has two children with her ex-husband Gavin Henson; Ruby Megan, nine, and Dexter Lloyd, eight.

She will welcome her third child with her current partner Jonathan Powell.

Hands up who loves a Sunday morning lie in?

We'd say the majority of you have your hands virtually in the air right now, because… sleep.

There's nothing better than staying in bed, relaxing and catching up on some well-needed you-time.

Well, it turns out that those of us who can indulge on a lie in are doing things right – because being sleep deprived has a seriously negative impact on our health.

In a new study published in New Scientist, it found that brain cells ware out and be destroyed when we're chronically sleep deprived.

The study, which took place in Italy, saw that a lack of sleep over a long period of time could contribute to conditions such as Alzheimer's disease, as well as other neurological disorders.

So if you didn't get a chance to catch some zzz's this weekend, make sure you find some time next week. Your brain will thank you for it.

It's an ongoing cycle. We wait all week for Friday to come around, and while we blissfully bounce out of the office come 5pm, it can seem like we're right back in there at 9am on Monday morning without any time passing.

With weekends only being two days long, most of us have routines – especially on Sunday night. And we all know that's when the Fear of work drools on us like a leaking bathroom tap.

We prepare our schedules, prep our meals, change our nail colour, and dread going to sleep because that means it'll be Monday and we'll be right back into work again.

However a neuroscientist, David Eagleman, states that he has the secret to making our weekends longer, and while it seems like a great idea, we're sceptical of how it'll play out in real life.

activity, adult, barbecue

According to the Standford professor, the key to making our weekends last longer is to "seek out newness."

He believes, "when you go and experience something novel, it seems to have lasted longer."

So in other words, go to a new restaurant, a new park, or travel to a county you've never been to before.

In his book, The Brain: The Story of You, he claims that when you look back on a childhood summer, it feels like it took a lot longer because you were constantly experiencing new things.

café, coffee, cup

"But when you're older, you've sort of seen all the patterns before," the author says.

He recommends visiting a new place, trying out a new restaurant or reading a new book – and that's all well and good until reality sets in.

How many of us just want to chill and binge on our favourite TV show the minute the weekend rolls around? And how many of us enjoy going to the same pub, with the same friends every Saturday night?

And by the end of the month, most of us don't have the funds to afford to go on a weekend break, or try out a new restaurant.

While we would all love to live by his assessment, is it really achievable? Can we really make every weekend shorter?!

Woman Holding White Book

Of course, there's plenty of free activities to do around Ireland, so we suppose it's up to ones self to seek this "newness."

However, David admits that there is one caveat – it's only true in hindsight. “It’s exactly the opposite when you’re looking forward in time versus looking backwards," he says.

Which basically means come Monday it'll feel like you had a long action-packed weekend. BUT, while you're doing such things, as the saying goes; time flies when you're having fun.

So… it's looking like we'll never make those weekends seem longer.

A tropical island filled with rescue puppies? Have our dreams come true? We think so.

Because what's better than beautiful landscapes, sunny skies and an abundance of pups that need care and love? Nothing. Nothing is better, we tell you.

On the island of Providenciales in Turks & Caicos there is a charity dedicated to re-homing and caring for 'potcake' puppies, a mixed breed of Labrador Retriver, German Shepherd and English Fox Terriers that are currently over-bred and over-populated in the Caribbean.

On average, the shelter houses between 50-70 puppies at any time. They make sure all of the dogs receive their vaccinations, are in tip top shape.

They even arrange certification for the pups to travel, and say "if an adoption goes ahead, we help book the pup on the plane, and meet the families at the airport”.

However, if you're not in a position to adopt a puppy, you're more than welcome to come onto the island and play with the dogs because they benefit hugely from human interaction.

To adopt a pup, you have to be over the age of 25 and commit to caring for it for 10-15 years.

To adopt is free, but the rescue centre does ask for a donation, which we believe it fair enough.

Chocolate makes our hearts happy.

Seriously, having a bad day? Chocolate. Stressed out at work? Chocolate. Going through a bad break-up? Chocolate.

So, that's why we're SO delighted to find out that it's actually good for us.

Now, we know that at this stage a lot of studies are claiming that basically every food in the world is good for us, but we're definitely on board with the chocolate findings.

chocolate, cookies, cooking

A new study published in the British Medical Journal: Heart claims that eating chocolate in moderation can have a positive effect on lessening the risk of Atrial Fibrillation, a heart arrhythmia condition.

Currently, 8.8 million people in the EU suffer from it.

So, how does chocolate help the situation? Well, we all know that dark chocolate is good for us, so the question arises with other chocolate goods, such as milk chocolate, white chocolate and everything in between.

Brown Chocolate Cupcake

Tests carried out at the Danish Diet, Cancer and Healthy Study say that cocoa products contain a high contents of flavanols, which are basically antioxidants with anti-inflammatory benefits.

Studies found that those who consume two to six servings of chocolate a week were at a lower risk of developing Artial Fibrillation.

So, there you have it. Eat more chocolate.

We all dream of winning the Lotto someday, and now one lucky Dubliner has woken up with a dream come true.

The National Lottery has confirmed that one overall winner took home the jackpot of €4.5m, and that the ticket was sold in Dublin, however they have not yet revealed the exact location.

In case you're still holding onto hope and haven't checked your ticket yet (are you crazy?!), the winning numbers were 2, 5, 12, 34, 41 and 47, and the bonus number was 29.

We were having a chat around the office to see what exactly we would do if we won that amount of money, and one of the answers was, 'buy an island'.

What would you do?!

We all know John Kavanagh as the man who coached Conor Mcgregor to UFC fame.

He's also the older brother of Snapchat star, James Kavanagh.

However, one woman believed he was the owner of J.J. Kavanagh bus services, and decided to email him about coach times.

A woman called Áine messaged the MMA coach on Facebook, asking for very specific time tables:

Understandably, John has an automated response because of all the McGregor questions he receives, and it wasn't until that automated message came through that Áine realised her mistake.

John noticed her message however, and had to reply:

Brilliant. We wonder if anyone else has ever made this mistake!
