Yearly Archives: 2017

Is it just us, or do post-Bank Holiday weeks seem to drag a bit?

Either way we can all rejoice in the fact that the weekend is almost upon us once again, and with so much going on around the capital, staying in is off the table.

Here's our top picks:

Dublin Comic Con

Prepare for an explosion of colour, cosplay and creativity because Comic Con returns to Dublin's Convention Centre this weekend.

Meet the actors from your favourite TV shows, take part in one of the many workshops and interactive sets, or simply take in the electric atmosphere as you browse the many arts and crafts stalls.

Costumes are highly encouraged, and there's even a prize for best dressed – so, break out your inner wonder woman and show those judges what you've got.

Doors open at 10.30am on Saturday August 11 and Sunday August 12 (9.30am for VIP ticket holders), and doors close at 6.00pm on Saturday and 5.00pm on Sunday.

Tickets are €10.55 – €63.30 and are available here.

The West Cork Ukulele Orchestra

The West Cork Ukulele Orchestra bring their spectacular genre defying, ukulele experience to the Grand Social this Friday, August 11.

Armed with just nine tiny ukuleles, the WCUO will entertain the crowds with their playful versions of classic pop songs, and seeing as they've preformed for Michael D himself, we're expecting good things.

Happenings presents: LaLa Land in Merrion square

This Friday, August 11, Happenings, in association with 7UP Free will transform Merrion Square, Dublin 2, into a spectacular outdoor cinema for a special outdoor screening of the critically acclaimed LaLa Land.

A true modern classic, the romantic musical, starring Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling, captured the hearts of a generation while picking up a few Oscars along the way.

Attendees are encouraged to bring blankets and picnics, but a selection of food, coffee and yummy treats will be available on site.

It all kicks of at 8:30pm but early arrival is advised to get the best seats in the house!

The Repeal Project has inspired many artists to get creative in support of one of the most prevalent issues of our time.

Furthering the reproductive and body autonomy rights of women, the Repeal Project has campaigned tirelessly to raise awareness for the pro-choice cause, and now one artist is raising further awareness in a pretty unique way.

The Repeal jumpers were a huge success, with every batch selling out as pro-choicers clamoured to wear their political beliefs across their chests.

Now, thanks to artist and Trinity student Shubhangi Karmakar, supporters can wear the slogan around their necks while simultaneously donating to the cause.

The Repealist is the chosen moniker for her online store, where she creates made to order necklaces, tote bags and wall art with a Repeal theme.

It's the acrylic and wood Repeal necklaces that really caught our eye.

A post shared by Repealist. (@repealist) on

Best of all, the proceeds go to The Repeal Project at the end of the month.

The first batch is currently sold out, but Shubhangi is already taking orders for a brand new batch.

We'll be adding our name to that list ASAP, especially with the March for Choice coming up next month.

Today, Washington DC residents came into contact with a sight that sparked both delight and disapproval (but mostly delight).

Chicken Don, a 60-foot inflatable chicken created by artist Casey Laitiolas appeared within sight of the White House.

The most notable aspect about the giant chicken? Well its resemblance to POTUS Donald Trump, of course.

The inflatable has been seen before during times of turmoil.

It was first spotted earlier this year after the POTUS refused to release his tax returns.

Now, the chicken materialises as Trump promises 'fire and fury' on North Korea.

While there is very little that can cheer us up after the announcement of a potential impending nuclear war, this is a nice attempt.

The chicken even has his own Twitter account, where he makes social commentary.

Much like the real deal so…

Kylie Jenner is celebrating her 20th birthday today with some pretty amazing news.

Kylie and Kris Jenner revealed to Women's Wear Daily exactly how much the expansive Kylie Cosmetics empire is actually worth, and the figure is jaw dropping.

According to the duo, Kylie Cosmetics has amassed $420 million in retail sales since it launched 18 months ago. No big deal.

A post shared by Kylie Cosmetics (@kyliecosmetics) on

Kylie first tested the theory of Kylie Lip Kits back in November 2015, and what began as an experimental dip into the world of beauty has become a bona fide business for the 20-year-old.

The company is on track to become a billion dollar business, with WWD estimating that Kylie Cosmetics will make another $386 million in retail sales in 2017.

With her limited edition collections selling out in seconds, and her permanent makeup pieces consistently selling well, it's no wonder Kylie is quite literally rolling on it thanks to her cosmetics concept.

It seems the youngest member of the Kardashian-Jenner clan can do no wrong when it comes to the world of beauty.

All of her beauty experiments, from lip kits, to loose highlighters to eye shadow palettes sell out.

While we're sure momager Kris has had a hand in guiding her daughter's business venture, this is more than impressive.

If you're a cyclist in Dublin City, you may have come across the small issue of not being able to bring your bike on the Luas.

If you have a super long commute and want to bike to a Luas stop and tram the rest of the way, there are stations at which you can secure your bike.

But nothing strikes fear into the hearts of men quite like leaving your bicycle unattended in Dublin, never mind then getting the Luas miles away from it.

Paranoia ensues, and there is a major fear that when you return to the Bike & Ride, you will be met with a skeleton of your beloved bike, or worse, no bike at all.

Fold up bikes are permitted on board, but we would need a small loan of one million dollars to afford one, so that option is out.

Dublin Senator Neale Richmond is calling for the Luas line to be opened up to cyclists at off-peak times.

'I am requesting something very doable here,' he told Dublin Live.

'Other tram services across Europe have limited access to two bikes per service and this is a reasonable compromise.'

'This is the international norm where cities such as Edinburgh, Bordeaux and London allow their metro and tram systems to accommodate cyclists.'

'If Transdev cannot accommodate any bike carriages even during off-peak services then it is clear we have a larger problem of capacity on our Luas services,' he said.

This could be seriously helpful for those who have to get the bus and the Luas to get to work every day.

When it comes to wedding day preparation, there's no denying that certain things tend to take centre-stage in any discussion surrounding the run-up to a woman's big day; dress, venue, honeymoon.

But these elements are, as most of us know, only scratching the surface.

While the gown, the destination and the post-nuptial holiday are certainly heavy-hitters, most brides-to-be will assert that some of their biggest concerns in the lead-up to their big day are their health, vitality, wellbeing and appearance.

With the sheer amount of time and effort that goes into organising a wedding, it's no surprise that many women begin to feel the strain, and subsequently worry that their efforts will take their toll physically.

And that, ladies, is where Jennifer Rock – AKA The Skin Nerd –  comes in.

Every bride dreams of having glowing, flawless skin on their big day, and Jennifer is on hand with top tips for achieving  bright, radiant, iridescent, dewy and luminous bridal skin.

1. Prep is key

While considering the dress of your dreams, psyche yourself up for the skin regime at the same time.

Many wait until six weeks prior to their wedding and it may not be enough time to tackle any true concerns, so seek a consult as soon as the engagement party is over!

2. Take your vitamins

Planning a wedding can be extremely stressful – a wonderfully exciting time no doubt, but still a busy time so be sure to up the multi vitamin intake, horse vitamin C into you.

Take 1,000mg daily to ward off colds while also strengthening capillary walls – bearing in mind red is the first colour to be seen on camera! I’d also recommend taking lysine to prevent cold sores!

3. Plump your skin

Hyaluronic is ideal to pump moisture into the skin and act as an added bonus to the two litre of water intake!

It can be added to any serum, booster or moisturiser to soften fine lines and wrinkles – a touch into a body cream is also recommended for smooth hydrated skin. This will assist in getting that flawless false tan application!

4. School yourself on fatty acids

Take omegas internally ie essential fatty acids in the form of supplements or oily fish.

These will have your body both wedding and honeymoon ready – helping to keep it soft with less inflammation and stress breakouts.

5. Treat yourself

Environ Hydra Boost is ideal to give the bridal glow, IPL and Neostrata Peel 3 months prior, needling 6 months prior do NOT try anything new the month of the wedding unless advised by a facialist.

Remember the last time we joked about free doughnuts?

Yeah us neither, and that’s because it goes against every fibre of our being here at SHEmazing HQ.

Doughnuts are a serious business, and free doughnuts are about as hardcore as it gets.

If you’re with us on that one, you definitely need to get yourself to Liffey Valley this weekend where the good folk at The Rolling Donut will be celebrating their opening by offering the public free doughnuts.

The store, which has three other branches in Dublin city centre, will be throwing open its doors on Saturday at 9.30, and will be providing its first 30 customers with a doughnut free of charge.

Commenting on the new store opening, Liffey Valley Centre Director, Denis O’Connell, said: “We are delighted to welcome ‘The Rolling Donut’ to our centre.”

“Following the recent expansion of the Western Plaza, our food and beverage options offer everything from Chinese, American diner, Italian and local cuisine and now donuts, which are a great addition.”

Ladies, you know what to do.
