Yearly Archives: 2016

OK, so maybe John Lewis didn’t set the waterworks off, but their record appears to have set a precedent; now, every retailer is trying to break the internet with a Christmas ad, and it’s really taking its toll on our emotions.

Just days after Lidl reduced us to a pile of mush, posh British supermarket chain Waitrose is getting in on the action – and they have really tugged at our heartstrings.

The Waitrose ad tells the story of a gorgeous little robin trying to make his way home to his ‘family’ in time for Christmas.

A little girl sets out a fresh mince pie, her face creased with worry as she observes the treacherous weather outside and wonders if little Robin is safe.

Elsewhere, Robin is setting off on a journey of epic proportions – with danger and near-misses at every turn.

After narrowly escaping a hungry weasel and a swooping hawk, poor little Robin is struck by a wave and washed up onto a boat during a storm.

Against the odds, Robin recovers and manages to make it home, where there is something very important waiting for him; no, not just the mince pie – his lovebird!

Cry-face emojis have now taken over Twitter, as heartwarmed viewers brand this ad the ‘sweetest’ of all.

If Lidl didn’t send you over the edge, then this one certainly will; after all, we’re all just trying to make it home for Christmas, aren’t we?

UPDATE at 13:20: Authorities are urging people to head to high ground amid threat of tsunami.

A ‘huge’ earthquake has just rocked New Zealand, according to breaking news reports this morning.

The ‘quake is said to have struck close to Christchurch, on New Zealand’s East Coast, but was felt as far away as Wellington and Cheviot.

While speculation has put the magnitude at various different points of the Richter Scale, a number of sources are placing it at 7.4.

The earthquake is reported to have struck about 80km from Christchurch in the early hours of the morning, local time.

A number of people who experienced the ‘quake have taken to Twitter to share their insight.

“Yowzer!” wrote one local, sharing a photo of a shelving unit collapsed on her bed.

Meanwhile, another tweeter described the impact in Wellington as ‘enormous’.

Naturally, people have taken to social media to check that everyone is doing OK after the frightening ordeal.

We're sending love to everyone in New Zealand today, and hope that everyone is safe.

We will keep you updated as more information emerges.

We were expecting a bawl-fest with this year’s John Lewis Christmas ad, but what we got was arguably even better.

Answer honestly – is there anything sweeter than seeing our little children and beloved pets happy?

We reckon the answer is a firm ‘no’.

Facebook user Victoria Mon, from the UK, has proven this once again, too – by sharing her own doggy’s incredible reaction to the John Lewis ad.

In the half-minute-long video clip, Victoria’s dog is seen impatiently pacing while waiting for Buster the Boxer to get his chance on the famous trampoline.

And once we get to the end of the ad, when Buster finally gets to indulge in a major bouncing session, Victoria’s dog can’t hide his own excitement!

As Buster begins to jump on the trampoline, Victoria’s pet pooch starts to bounce in her living room, all the while his eyes glued to the TV screen!

“The reason I love my box,” wrote Victoria, in the caption of the video, which has gone totally viral this weekend.

Indeed, people are amazed at her doggy’s reaction to the video.

The Daily Show with Trevor Noah reaction excited what wow

“OMG! That is so cute! You definitely need to tag John Lewis in this!” wrote one amazed viewer, while another claimed that Victoria’s video is ‘better than the advert’.

One word: amazing.

If anything tops sitting down with your favourite bar of chocolate, it’s having that bar of chocolate turned into an unorthodox treat.

Bray has become the first town in Ireland to home a chocolate kebab shop, all thanks to one married couple with a sugar-coated dream.

After sourcing a special chocolate kebab machine online, Declan and Christina Woods opened Sprinkles Café Bar on the Main Street of the popular coastal town.

As well as choco kebabs, the café offers waffle pops, fudge puppies, smoothies, whipped ice cream and coffee; so, whatever craving you find yourself with, Sprinkles will surely sort you out.

Do you ever find yourself scrolling through Instagram, wondering where you can buy certain items?

Well, if you do, your dreams are coming true!

Instagram is attempting to sell the idea that it is a place for “discovering” goods… and we bloody agree.

Instagram will team up with well-known brands, such as Abercrombie, Warby Parker, Kate Spade and Macy’s, to make products shoppable through the app.

Insta-users will simply have to hit the “Tap to view products” icon in the lower corner of photos, and BOOM- shopping joy.

The feature is currently being tested by certain groups of people in the USA, with the hopes that it will join mainstream Instagrammers in the next few months.

It’s a busy time in celeb-land today, with yet another star announcing some beautiful baby news.

After much speculation, US singer Pink has confirmed that she is, indeed, expecting her second child!

The rumour mill went into overdrive this week, when the 37-year-old stepped out with what appeared to be a baby bump, and she took to Instagram last night to reveal all.

Surprise!

Posting a photo of herself cradling her blossoming bump, Pink – real name Alecia Moore – is seen cuddling her adorable five-year-old daughter, Willow Sage.

“Surprise!” the Raise Your Glass singer wrote in the simple caption, to the delight of her legion of devoted followers.

Needless to say, messages of love came flooding in for Alecia, husband Carey Hart, and their little girl.

“Congrats dear! So extremely surprised!” wrote one fan, who had obviously been steering clear of the tabloids over the past few weeks!

Meanwhile, others branded both the news and the image ‘beautiful’ and ‘wonderful’.

Pink previously gushed over how motherhood has given her a whole new outlook on life.

What a night for Conor McGregor! Not only did the Irish UFC star win his hotly-anticipated fight with Eddie Alvarez, but he also shared some wonderful news: he’s going to be a dad!

Yep, in his victory speech at Madison Square Gardens last night, Conor took the opportunity to make a very personal and very special announcement.

“I’ve a few announcements. One announcement is that I’m going to be a daddy early next year,” he revealed.

The mixed martial arts fighter went on to add: “I’m crapping my jocks, I’m not going to lie. I don’t even know what way to take it. It’s going to mess with my head because I don’t want to bring a child into anything like this.”

Conor, whose long-term love Dee Devlin has been a constant support during his early days and rise to fame, insisted: “I’m going to have this baby, take a little time, and see what way I feel after that.”

After a spot of confusion, he then went on to reveal that Dee’s due date is in May.

We’re wishing them all the luck in the world!

As Paris officially marked the one-year anniversary of last November’s terrorist attacks, with a concert by Sting in the since abandoned Bataclan, French citizens are sharing their thoughts on the tragedy.

Parisians are memorialising  the country’s deadliest terror attacks with striking images of places of importance on Twitter.

The images, taken one year ago and, again, in the present day, show the devastation that occurred 365 days ago.

More than 400 people are still recovering from physical wounds, as 20 remain hospitalised.

A further 600 are receiving counselling and psychological support for the mental scars inflicted by the tragedy.

President Francois Hollande and the Mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, will unveil commemorative plaques dedicated to the victims at the sites where people lost their lives to the terror attack.

Many official events are due to take place in Paris on Sunday. French residents have also been asked to place a small candle in their windows, in memory of the victims.

France remains in a state of emergency since the attacks, which will continue until the New Year.

The investigation into the tragedy is still ongoing, with nine of the attackers and four key accomplices dead, and a further 14 in custody.

The run-up to Christmas just got a whole lot better now that there's a GIN advent calendar.

Usually, the good 'oul chocolate ones could do the job, but we all know that this time of year can be mega-stressful, so the boozy addition is a nice surprise.

The Ginvent calendar includes 24 various gins and they all sound super delish. From London Dry, to fruit infused, we can't wait to try each one.

"We scour countries in search of the very best, the most unusual, the most progressive and most of all – the most sublimely delicious gins."

It continues: "We also make an effort to showcase all types of producers, celebrating the artisanal, craft makers while providing a unique chance to compare them in context to some of the familiar, larger names.

If you consider yourself to be a big fan of cool manicures, then the following may send you over the edge…

The shattered glass manicure effect is sweeping Instagram, and we are in LOVE with it.

Now OBVIOUSLY it's not real glass (that would be dangerous ladies) but it’s actually thin slivers of cellophane (think shinier cling film) arranged on the nail to reflect light.

The results are pretty darn cool, and will guarantee you all the likes on Insta.
