According to emerging reports, Facebook have begun testing the use of artificial intelligence in an effort to identify users who may be at risk of suicide.

The AI tool will scan and filter posts and comments which contain language indicative of pain, sadness or concern, and ultimately send the results to a human review team.

At this point, the review team will reach out to the user flagged by the tool and offer help in the form of support services.

The news comes amid an announcement that the corporation have introduced a new safety feature to its Facebook Live function which will allow users to immediately bring a troubling stream to the attention of the team.

Those sceptical of the new feature suggest the site should immediately cut streaming if suicide is mentioned as opposed to flagging it with staff.

Disagreeing with this argument, Jennifer Guadagno, the project’s lead researcher. said: "What the experts emphasised was that cutting off the stream too early would remove the opportunity for people to reach out and offer support."

"So, this opens up the ability for friends and family to reach out to a person in distress at the time they may really need it the most.”

Explaining the motivation behind the initiative in a recent manifesto, Mark Zuckeberg said: "Looking ahead, one of our greatest opportunities to keep people safe is building artificial intelligence to understand more quickly and accurately what is happening across our community."

The AI tool is currently being tested in the United States; up until now, Facebook relied on users to flag worrying content.

Some fans said his decision to speak publicly about the moment he found George Michael dead was, so soon after his passing, in bad taste.

And today, Fadi Fawez courted yet more controversy – stating in an incredible series of tweets that the 53-year-old pop superstar was suicidal and had made attempts to take his own life before.

The tweets have now been deleted and the account shut.

However, the London-based hairdresser, who had been in a relationship with George since 2012, is adamant that he is the victim of a hacker.

Fadi told Mirror Online: "I am shocked with what's going on with the Twitter thing. My Twitter account has been hacked and closed."

He added: "It's a bit scary to be honest. I did not send those tweets. I woke up at 11.30am to the news. I am not going to worry about these things."

The shocking tweets had earlier read: "The only thing George wanted is to die.

"He tried numbers of times to kill himself many times… and finally he managed.

"We loved each other very much and were together almost 24 hours a day.

Less than 24 hours after George Michael's Christmas Day passing, Mr Fawez tweeted that he had found him dead in his bed.

The cause of his death has been cited by police as heart failure, although further toxicology testing is now being carried out.

Ever sit down to your morning fry and think "God, I wish there was Viagra in my sausages?"

Well, now there can be!

Save Our Sausages (or SOS) is a new campaign by the founder of Fathers4Justice, Matt O’Connor, and – in a bid to improve the state of male mental health – Matt has helped develop a brand of totally edible pork sausages which contain natural Viagra.

According to The Metro, these culinary delights are infused with L’Arginine, Horny Goat Week, Red Chinese and Siberian Ginseng, all of which assist those with erectile dysfunction.

Matt – who worked on the sausages with The Butchery – believes the product will help get British men talking about the hugely prevalent issues of depression, suicide and low testosterone.

He says the new series of Cold Feet made him realise that humour is a great way to prompt discussions among men about difficult topics and so he thought the sausages would “help break the wall of silence”.

Fair play!

In May 2015 David Beckham made his Instagram debut with a sexy selfie, and ever since we’ve been reverting back to our early Man U state of infatuation with the famous footballer.

But as well as sharing selfies, glimpses of his family life and pictures where he just looks like a total babe, the 41-year-old has been using his Insta profile to raise awareness of some very important causes.

Yesterday the dad of four shared a video with his 29 million followers in which he performs 22 press-ups while flying at 45,000 feet.

Nominated by his “lovely friend” Guy Richie, the former England captain explains that the filmed exercise is part of a programme which aims to highlight the frightening levels of suicide among soldiers who’ve returned home from duty overseas.

Alongside the post, he wrote: “So my lovely friend Mr Guy Richie the film maker and supreme athlete has nominated me to do 22 press ups consecutively for 22 days (and by the way his challenge was that I do my first lot at 44,000 feet as he knows I’m travelling).”

“22 service men kill themselves post conflict…22 a day, basically 1 an hour.  So I am doing what Guy R, Jason S and Charlie H are doing and supporting, respecting and appreciating all the service men and women and their sacrifice.”

Just another reason to love DB.

On Saturday January 2, the family of Caoilte O Broin identified his body after it was pulled from the River Liffey.

Caoilte had attempted to take his life on several occasions prior to his death, and though he was receiving treatment, his mental health had deteriorated to such a point that his family were left in fear for their own lives.

He experienced "extreme psychosis" and would scream for hours, threatening to kill both himself and his family.

"Caoilte died needlessly due to systemic failures that let families all across this country down when someone is suffering from mental health issues," the O Broin family said in a statement on Facebook.

"Caoilte died from his mental illness. This could have been prevented."

Speaking to JOE.ie before his death, Caoilte's sister Catríona said that a 'dual diagnosis' was one of the biggest barriers to him receiving the treatment he needed.

A dual diagnosis is a term used when someone suffers from a substance abuse problem – drug or alcohol addiction – alongside their anxiety, depression or another mental health issue.

"We have tried to have him committed, again and again, but we keep being told that it comes down to the drinking, and that his mental health problems are considered separately," Catríona explained.

"My brother drinks because he is in pain. He is sick. He has no hope. He sees no other way."

On Thursday February 11, the O Broin family will hold a silent candlight vigil outside Dublin's Government Buildings to petition for better treatment of those using mental health services in Ireland.

"We are seeking legislative changes so that no other family will have to endure the suffering that Caoilte and his family have had to."

A top Hollywood makeup artist has been found dead, with the high-profile names he worked with taking to social media in the aftermath to pay their respects.

Jake Bailey was found yesterday by his assistant slumped over the wheel of his SUV. He had taken his own life.

The Los Angeles County Coroner's Office has already confirmed that 37-year-old Mr Bailey was found dead at 8.25am on Friday and that he appeared to have suffered from carbon monoxide poisoning in an apparent suicide.

A postmortem will confirm the cause of death later in the week.

Jake's talents were called upon for red-carpet events, shoots, and music videos by the likes of Katy Perry, Paris Hilton, and Selena Gomez.

Jake- My sweet, sensitive soul. What a wonderful journey and friendship we had together. What beautiful art we created together. We conquered the worlds biggest stages, together. I know you felt life so intensely and it created this incredible artistic passion in you that came out in everything you touched, from the amazing images you took to the ways you painted your muses, highlighting the beauty in everyone. You had the most otherworldly eye to detail… we would laugh about how you could take a nap in that eyelid crease you created (cause it was so deep) or Jake's 45 minute eyes… Which was such a precise lash that even Bambi couldn't rival. You essentially created my "look" ever since we met on the music video for Hot and Cold. We always confided in each other, rallied each other at our lows and pushed each other to be our best. We never got comfortable and I know that was why we did the best work together. My favorite moments of recent times is when we would meditate together during breaks on different jobs…tune all the noise out, forget about hollywood and the chaos that surrounds it, and look for a slice of peace, 20 minutes at a time. I know sometimes it was hard to find consistent happiness here on this earth, I understand you in that way. I want you to know now finally and forevermore that I appreciate you and all the lessons we traded each other in this life. I love you. No more work, no more searching, you are finally at peace. Every time I sit in that chair we shared, just know, no one holds a brush to you, friend. Be free now. My prayers are with the Bailey family.

He was particularly close to Ms Perry, who used him for several high-profile glossy magazine shoots – including her September 2014 issue of Cosmopolitan.

The 31-year-old musician earlier left a lengthy tribute to Jake's "sweet, sensitive soul" on her Instagram page.

She added: "My favorite moments of recent times is when we would meditate together during breaks on different jobs… tune all the noise out, forget about Hollywood and the chaos that surrounds it, and look for a slice of peace, 20 minutes at a time."

And Paris Hilton in her tribute had called him "an amazing person, an incredibly talented makeup artist and friend".

The 34-year-old added: "He was my makeup artist for the past 15 years. We travelled the world together, worked on so many beautiful projects and shared so many memories. Will miss him so much."

A neighbour who lived beside Jake on Holly Drive in Hollywood told Mail Online: "His assistant had showed up with coffee for him and then we heard yelling and screaming and a car alarm going off, so my wife ran out."

They added: "They had called 911 and did everything they could until help arrived, but it was too late. The assistant was really shaken up."

The funeral service of Cathriona White, who died in Los Angeles late last month, has now taken place.

With hundreds of mourners in attendance, the 30-year-old makeup artist was laid to rest following a Mass at Our Lady Of Fatima Church in Cappawhite, Co Tipperary.

She has been buried beside her late father, Pat, who died of brain cancer in September 2012.

In attendance was the young woman’s grieving family, as well as heartbroken actor Jim Carrey – a man who had been in an on/off relationship with Cathriona since 2012.

Indeed, the Hollywood star, who has looked strained throughout the day, acted as pallbearer for the procession.

The 53-year-old had arrived in a blacked-out Mercedes people carrier and Mail Online reports that he travelled to Ireland this morning via a private jet.

In an official, heartfelt statement following her tragic death, Jim had called his love “my delicate Irish flower”. Mr Carrey also described himself as being "hit with a lightning bolt" by the news of her death.

She was found dead on September 28 in a house in the upmarket area of Sherman Oaks in California. Having been diagnosed with depression in the past, and it is believed that Ms White took an overdose of prescription pills.

Officials Stateside say they are treating her death as suicide.

Fr Tadhg Furlong, parish priest in the area, said Ms White's family and friends are faced with a life cut short, a vision not fulfilled, a dream not realised.

He continued: "In 1985 Cathriona was baptised with joy into this Christian community. We assemble now in a very different atmosphere to welcome her home.

"We gather in silent, sad, grief-stricken fáilte. At this time we welcome home one of our own."

"Cathriona's approach to life was to take on, to challenge the county, the country, the world," the priest furthemore told mourners.

"You remember the outgoing personality – the strong-willed, determined character."

And Fr Furlong then added: "Cathriona was a light to so many. Something of the light has gone out. Yet much remains.

"The light continues to shine. The light of love lives on; the love you had for Cathriona; the love she had for you."

A number of gifts were presented during the service including a sports jersey and a football to represent her love of Gaelic games, as well as family photos and make-up brushes.

Her step-sister, Sarah, gave an emotional eulogy, saying: “Cathriona had such an amazing capacity to love and to be loved.

"From growing up in Cappawhite, through to moving to Clonmel and finally settling in LA, love remained a constant in her life from beginning to end.”

However, she concluded: “Thankfully, love is not as fickle and unpredictable as life is.

“As long as you are loved, you are here. You are so loved.”

This evening, Mr Carrey posted a tribute to Cathriona on his Twitter account. Featuring a silhouette of the two of them, he also wrote 'love cannot be lost'.

Police in Californian previously told TMZ that two concerned friends originally found Cathriona’s body, while another source added that Ms White’s suicide note was addressed to Mr Carrey.

The heartbroken family of Cathriona White have made an official statement about her death.

Make-up artist Cathriona, a Tipperary native, was found dead at her rented home in Los Angeles on Monday night, with a drug overdose believed to be the cause of her death.

It's reported she left a suicide note behind for her on-off boyfriend, actor Jim Carrey.

In a touching tribute released last night, the White family mourned the passing of the 28-year-old.

"The family of Cathriona White sincerely regret the untimely passing of their beloved daughter and sister," they said in a statement to the Irish Independent.

"Cathriona was a shining light in our lives who was loved deeply by her entire family.

"We will miss her terribly and at this difficult time we ask to be left in private to mourn our loss."

Cathriona was raised in the small village of Cappawhite but moved to the US in 2009, aged just 22, to pursue a career in beauty.

Her career progressed over the next few years as she worked on films such as Firefly and The Online Gamer, meeting Jim Carrey in mid-2012.

Cathriona's father Pat passed away from cancer in late 2012, but she was unable to come home to Ireland for his funeral, the Irish Times states.

Over the last two years, Cathriona and Jim's relationship went through a number of rocky patches. Of late they were reported to have ended things again, though Jim made reference to her in a number of Twitter posts throughout early September.

In his own statement last night, the Truman Show actor paid tribute to an "Irish flower, too sensitive for this soil."

A post-mortem into Cathriona's death is expected to take place today.

Fans of Jim Carrey have been taking to social media this evening to express their shock at the passing of his girlfriend, Cathriona White.

The 28-year-old Tipperary-native had moved to Hollywood in 2009 to work as a make-up artist and had met the high-profile actor on a movie set in 2012.

Sadly, reports from the US this afternoon say that Ms White has taken her own life.

According to TMZ, she was found dead by friends last night and it has been furthermore reported that she had left a suicide note addressed to Mr Carrey.

Now, in a heartfelt statement, Jim has responded to the tragedy.

“I am shocked and deeply saddened by the passing of my sweet Cathriona,” he said.

“She was a truly kind and delicate Irish flower, too sensitive for this soil, to whom loving and being loved was all that sparkled.”

The 53-year-old added: “My heart goes out to her family and friends and to everyone who loved and cared about her.

“We have all been hit with a lightning bolt.”

Just a week ago, the talented make-up artist had dined at Malibu's upmarket Nobu restaurant.

Ms White also recently travelled to Canada – taking to Instagram to thank the Irish consulate in San Franciso for renewing her passport promptly. And earlier this year, she had shared a snap of her proudly wearing her Tipperary hurling jersey around LA.

Her most recent post was from just five days ago when she uploaded a wind-swept black-and-white snap for her 7,500 followers.

Underneath the image, people have this evening been leaving their condolences.

"Sweet Dreams @littleirishcat may flights of angels sing you to your rest xxx shocked," one sympathiser wrote.

Another said, "RIP young lady. May you find peace at last."

Meanwhile a third person stated: "At dheis Dé go bhfuil a anam. Had the pleasure of playing football with Caitríona, she was a loyal, kind and caring girl.

"Her heart was always in the right place. So sorry to hear of her loss my sympathies to all family and friends xx Rest in peace a stór."

They've been dating on/off since meeting on a movie set three years ago – and in recent months Cathriona White and Hollywood star Jim Carrey had rekindled their romance.

Tragically, however, reports from the US now say that Ms White has taken her own life.

She was aged just 28 and originally hailed from Cappawhite in Co Tipperary.

Police in Californian have told TMZ that after responding to a call last night, LAPD officers went to a local residence and discovered Cathriona's body.

It is believed that she was originally found by two concerned friends and a TMZ source added that Ms White left a suicide note addressed to Mr Carrey.

Cathriona had tweeted last Thursday: "Signing off Twitter, I hope I have been a light to my nearest and dearest."

US law enforcement reportedly believe she may have died from a drugs' overdose: pills were discovered next to her body.

She and 53-year-old Jim met in 2012 while she was working as a make-up artist.

They originally dated for more than a year before breaking-up. They then began seeing each other in May of this year but are believed to have split again in the last few days.

Cathriona trained as a beauty therapist in Ireland before moving to Hollywood in 2009.

Kim Kardashian’s ex-boyfriend and co-star of her now infamous sex tape, Ray J, made a frantic call to 911 yesterday after his girlfriend Princess Love threatened to commit suicide.

The couple had ended their relationship the previous day, but according to sources, Princess was struggling with the developments.

Commenting on her behaviour leading up to her cries for help, insiders said: “She was incessantly texting him after he left for work today and when she didn’t hear what she wanted from him she threatened suicide.”

Ray J, who initiated the split, was horrified by her remarks and immediately called the police. The 33-year-old singer-songwriter and former flame of Whitney Houston told the dispatcher that there were guns in the house, so he was understandably panicked that help wouldn’t reach Princess in time.

The police arrived at the home to find it empty, but thankfully Ray J has spoken with his ex-girlfriend who insists “she will not go through with her threat.”

This has been a massively difficult time for the couple who also had to deal with the news of their friend’s apparent murder-suicide this week.

We hope Ray J and Princess seek the help they need at this time.

Geordie Shore’s Vicky Pattison has spoken out about how she considered committing suicide after her arrest for assault in 2013.

There were allegations made that she and her co-star Holly Hagan had attacked a model during a night out in Newcastle, and Vicky was charged with two counts of assault. She pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 180 hours of unpaid community service.

The reality star has spoken out about the ordeal in her new book Nothing But The Truth, saying:

“I was so down in the weeks that followed I genuinely contemplated killing myself at times…

“I am dramatic about things when it comes to love or my mates, but I had never in my life before suffered from serious depression or considered suicide.

“I felt like all I was doing was messing up and embarrassing my family. I had lost everything I had going for me and I didn't want to live any more. I couldn't see any other way out.”

However, the star got help from her sister and psychiatrist, and thankfully, got back on her feet:

“It was that fighting instinct in me, and my amazing sister and friend who got me through that made me realise that I would achieve nothing by killing myself. I would have left the only people who cared about me heartbroken.”
