Oscar-winning actor and comedian Robin Williams (63) was found dead in his California home yesterday morning after an apparent suicide.

A call was made to police at 11.55am local time, and emergency services arrived on the scene in five minutes. A statement from Marin County Sheriff’s Office confirmed:

“The male subject, pronounced dead at 12:02am, has been identified as Robin McLaurin Williams, a 63-year-old resident of unincorporated Tiburon.”

It is thought that Williams’ death was a suicide due to asphyxia, but an investigation has yet to be carried out.

The actor is said to have been struggling with severe depression.

His wife Susan Schneider said in a statement: “This morning, I lost my husband and my best friend, while the world lost one of its most beloved artists and beautiful human beings. I am utterly heartbroken. On behalf of Robin’s family, we are asking for privacy during our time of profound grief. As he is remembered, it is our hope the focus will not be on Robin’s death, but on the countless moments of joy and laughter he gave to millions.”

Our thoughts go out to Robin’s family and friends at this awful time.

Research has been published in The American Journal of Psychiatry that claims to have found how a specific gene reacts to stress, and apparently, this could predict whether or not a person is at risk of suicide.

Dr. Zachary Kaminsky took blood samples from living people, and found an increase in the chemical that sets off this gene in those, who had reported suicidal thoughts.

Dr. Kaminsky said that this discovery could help a lot of people: “If we can identify who is at risk, we may be able to intervene in effective ways. Notably, we could identify individuals in military populations who are more vulnerable to stress. We know they’re going to be experiencing stress when they go off to combat.”

These advances in science can’t come quick enough, Ireland had the second highest rate of suicide across Europe last year.

Tulisa Contostavlos has opened up about the toll her recent trial took on her life in the tell-all documentary ‘Tulisa: The Price of Fame’, which will be aired tonight at 10pm on BBC Three.

In a clip, Tulisa reveals that at one point, she had attempted to commit suicide: “So like an idiot I don’t know what I was thinking, I picked up painkillers and necked them with a bottle of vodka, I don’t even know what I was planning to do.”

When asked if she had been planning on taking her own life she replied: “Yeah, I am being honest. I don’t care. Yeah.”

Luckily, the star’s personal assistant Gareth Valley called an ambulance, and while she refused to go to hospital, medics stayed with her until she was definitely going to be ok.

We can’t help but feel sorry for Tulisa, it can’t be easy being accused of something you didn’t do, and judging by what she’s done to her face it’s obviously taken a toll on her confidence. We hope she’s back to her best soon!

Paris Jackson is said to be recovering a year on from her suicide attempt.

The daughter of music icon Michael Jackson is still attending boarding school in Utah, and a source says that she is doing a lot better:

“She is getting back to normal. I think she has made quite a bit of progress over the past year.

“Utah has been exactly what she needed to get better. She is in a much better place than a year ago. It’s just a matter of time before she comes home”.

Almost exactly a year ago today it was confirmed that Paris had attempted suicide as she had been dealing with depression.

It’s not easy recovering from something like that, but we’re glad to see she’s on the mend.
