‘I have struggled with depression on and off throughout my life' she said.

''I remember even this year in January I was on the sofa with my mum asking her permission. Asking "can I kill myself?'

'It’s the worst thing watching someone you love suffer. And you can't help someone who doesn’t want to be helped, they can't see the light.'

Only months later, Megan came in third place on one of the globe's most watched reality shows, had met her partner Wes Nelson, and was inspiring millions of women to embrace their sexuality and necver shy away from being themselves.

Megan told the publication that Love Island was like a 'rehab' for her, after her struggles.

'I think it needs to be spoken about. I have been in that situation of, like, helplessness, when my mum and my nana said "what can I do for you?"

'And if more people were open about it, there would be more hope.'

Sometimes all you need is a little help from your friends. But when you're struggling with mental illness it can seem impossible to face the world outside your bed, never mind ask a friend for help.

The shame and stigma attached to mental health issues doesn't exactly help either. And it seems to take high profile suicides, such as those of Kate Spade and Anthony Bourdain, for the conversation around depression and anxiety to be pushed into the spotlight.

But there is hope, as writer Sheila O'Malley found out during her darkest days.

Taking to Twitter to share her story, O'Malley recalls the period after the death fo her father, when she was plunges into the depths of depression. Moving to a new department, she found herself unable to unpack her boxes.

Her good friend David sensed that she was struggling and reached out to help.

So on a Thursday evening, 10 of her closest friends barged into her apartment.

Not only did they get to work unpacking her apartment, but there was no judgement for her "inability to do the simplest things".

While she was overwhelmed and embarrassed at first, the sight of her friends turning her apartment into "Santa's workshop" made her feel loved.

While the advice of asking for help might seem simple it's far far harded than you might think. Sometimes its not possible at all, and that's were kind friends come in.

Be that friend. Don't ask for an invitation, it could save a loved one's life, or it could even save your own one day.

"You're important to someone, Sonny, so put down the rope," is the final line of The Rubberbandits' latest offering, and one which perhaps most succinctly sums up the sentiment of the track.

Examining the complexity of suicide in Sonny, the Limerick duo dismiss the notion that there must exist one specific reason for a person to take their own life.

"He isn't lonely or addicted to drugs, he doesn't owe his mother's money to thugs, he's not an alcoholic, he isn't depressed, and he's going to break a lot of hearts when he hangs himself," the track opens.

Over the course of three minutes and 29 seconds, the track tells the story of countless people, from varying backgrounds, who see suicide as their only option.

The track, which was uploaded to YouTube today, has amassed considerable support, with one person writing: "If this song is in anyway instrumental in saving even one life it has served it's purpose."

"Savage lyrics…I wouldn't expect any less," added another.

Take a listen here, but expect strong language throughout.

The family of Chester Bennington, have planned to set up a suicide awareness charity to help young music fans.

Chester died by suicide in his California home last month, aged just 41.

His death shocked fans around the world, and now his family are determined to help others who may be experiencing similar mental health issues.

According to reports, the family hope the organisation will help to prevent others, especially young fans, from suffering the same fate as the Linkin Park frontman.

Chester took his own life on what would have been the 53rd birthday of Audioslave singer, Chris Cornell, who also died by suicide earlier this year.

The family of Chester are said to be concerned that fans of the rock stars “might want to glorify or somehow honour their deaths by doing the same. They're also worried troubled people might view this as an appropriate way out.”

Shortly after his death, Linkin Park shared details of suicide help lines along with the message: “In case you or someone you know needs support, here are some resources.”

Less than 400 people died by suicide in Ireland in 2016, the lowest rates in more than 20 years.

However, while overall levels are down, figures from the National Self-Harm Registry have shown that there was an increase of 6.2 per cent in suicide rates among Irish women, with the biggest rise seen in women over the age of 35.

Rates among men have dropped by 15.2 per cent overall, however, a slight increase was noted in 55-64 year old males.

Figures supplied to the HSE also revealed that the rate of suicide among Irish teenagers is below the European average.

This is in contrast to a recent report that suggested Ireland had the fourth highest rate of teen suicide in the EU region, but according to HSE chief, Tony O'Brien, it is “important to note that this data related to 2010.”

Speaking about the overall 11.5 per cent drop, HSE director for mental health, Anne O'Connor, suggested it was the result of  “a more positive conversation” around the issue.

Two women who were at risk of suicide were denied abortions in Ireland.

Both women had tried to commit suicide more than once, and sought to have legal abortions.

The women were immigrants who would have needed a Visa to travel to the UK to procure a termination, according to the Abortion Support Network

'Both of these women were basically told that they weren't suicidal enough,' Mara Clarke, the founder of the Abortion Support Network charity, told The Times.

'One woman was refused her visa to travel for an abortion and attempted suicide for the third time,' she said.

After the third attempt, the woman was granted a termination.

'The termination was carried out much later than it should have been because of the delay,' she said.

In response to the revelations, Minister for Health Simon Harris reportedly said: 'This is an issue that, as a nation, we now need to deal with definitively.'

The Abortion Support Network provides financial assistance and accommodation to women forced to travel fom the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland and the Isle of Man to access abortion services.

A judge in Massachusetts has ruled that a 20-year-old woman was guilty of encouraging her boyfriend to commit suicide in 2014.

Michelle Carter waived her right to a jury which ultimately gave Judge Lawrence Moniz the right to rule as he saw fit given the evidence presented in the case.

It has been established that Carter regularly urged her boyfriend, Conrad Roy, to act on his suicidal thoughts, going so far as to send multiple texts when the latter appeared reluctant to carry out the act.

Acting on Roy's behalf, prosecutors claimed that Carter was desperate for attention and asserted that Roy's death would provide her with the attention she craved.

Further to this, they accused Carter of being on the phone to Roy in the moments before his passing.

However, Carter's defence team insisted that their client had on many previous occasions talked her boyfriend out of taking his own life, and claimed that Carter suffered from her own mental health issues during this time.

Texts messages which were presented in court make for harrowing reading, as the accused urges the deceased to act on his intentions.

"You can't think about it. You just have to do it. You said you were gonna do it. Like I don't get why you aren’t," Carter wrote.

When Roy insisted that he intended to carry out the act, but wasn't ready, he was met with a barrage of criticism from his girlfriend.

"No, you're not, Conrad. Last night was it. You kept pushing it off and you say you'll do it, but you never do," Carter responded.

It's always gonna be that way if you don't take action. You're just making it harder on yourself by pushing it off. You just have to do it. Do you want to do it now?"

Commenting on their late son's girlfriend, Roy's mother said: "I don't believe she has a conscience. I think she needs to be held responsible for her actions 'cause she knew exactly what she was doing and what she said."

Roy poisoned himself with carbon monoxide on July 13 2014.

The case is the first of its kind, but it's believed that Carter could face up to 20 years in prison.
