Yearly Archives: 2023

The Otherside Music Festival returns to the incredible setting of Rock Farm in Slane Co. Meath from July 7th – 9th. A host of new artists will join the already eclectic lineup from electronic to pop and soul to rave. Introducing the comedy lineup at the Craic Den Comedy Club followed by some late-night antics at the Beneath The Trees Stage.

Kicking off with the brand new artists added to the bill, we’ll be joined by Fatima Yamaha, the Dutch electronic artist and producer who returns to Ireland to play in Slane this July, in surroundings fit for one of his atmospheric sonic sets. Internationally acclaimed Wexford-London soul singer/rapper Maverick Sabre released his fourth album, ‘Don't Forget To Look Up’, in early 2022. Showcasing his powerful lyrics, smooth melodies and unmistakable voice this will be one set you don’t want to miss.

CMAT

When it comes to rave culture there aren’t many artists out there who are as passionate and dedicated as Enzo Siragusa. The Londoner is the mastermind behind one of the capital’s most infamous party brands, Fuse. His roots lie in jungle and drum'n'bass, while drawing influence from the London ‘90s rave culture that heavily influenced him. North Carolina-born and bred singer-songwriter Indigo De Souza has an indie rock sound at the core with powerful vocals and raw intimate lyrics. Her brand new album ‘All of This Will End’ is released this week, we can’t wait to see her in action at Rock Farm. Check out her latest single 'You Can Be Mean'.

Bombay Bicycle Club

Masters of catchy pop riffs from Kilkenny electronic indie-pop duo 49th & Main continue their ascent making waves internationally, amassing millions of streams, and appearing as Spotify’s Radar cover stars. Followed closely by the equally talented Somebody’s Child who amassed legions of listeners with his raspy vocals on break-out track ‘Jungle’ to the indie belter 'We Could Start A War' taken from his debut album.

Maya Jane Cole

They will be joining an already super sweet lineup including Bombay Bicycle Club, pop megastar CMAT, Aaron Jerome aka SBTRKT, Australian four-piece and portable party Confidence Man, Danish techno maestro Kölsch, queen of the electronic underground Maya Jane Coles, cinematic sounds from soft rock project Tommy Lefroy, and Glaswegian DJ Lauren Andrew aka La La.

The gorgeous site on Rock Farm sits in the shadow of the famous Slane Castle, a mere 40-minute drive from Dublin on the banks of the River Boyne and nestled beneath a canopy of native forests. RISE Nordic Spa will return once again to the idyllic setting to bring their grounded, restorative wellness program to the festival. Chill out with a wood-fired hot tub or Nordic-style sauna, morning yoga sessions, a full wellness retreat awaits.

Accommodation options include the general campsite or boutique upgrades from beautifully kitted-out Yurts to pre-pitched tents. The best of the Boyne Valley local food traders will be onsite with tasty fare alongside the fully-seated bookable Zhug Banquet, bringing the finest selection of North African and Middle Eastern style cuisine and a host of pop-up bars will be stocked with refreshing cocktails, delicious wines, and ice-cold draught beers.

Olivia Attwood has shared an insight into her wedding plans as she prepares to tie the knot with her beau Bradley Dack.

The former Love Island star has spoken out about her wedding which is finally taking place this summer after having to cancel it twice due to Covid-19 restrictions.

Speaking to OK! about organising her big day, Olivia revealed the couple have drastically reduced their guest list and she opened up about designing her own dream wedding dress.

The 31-year-old explained, “I think the wedding we are going ahead with this summer is much more true to who I am and who Brad is, and it reflects our personalities a lot more”.

“We’ve stood our ground, we’ve reduced the guest list quite drastically and I feel way better about it. That’s one of the good things that has come with having to rearrange the wedding a couple of times!”.

“We’ve actually had a chance to take a step back and go, ‘Hold on, are we inviting these people because we’re trying to keep everyone happy, or because we really want to?’”.

When opening up about her gown for the big day, Olivia revealed she hasn’t seen any other bride in a similar dress.

“It’s very true to my personal style. I’ve not seen anyone do a dress like this. I’m really pleased as I designed it three years ago”.

“My fear was that I’d see someone using a similar fabric. I would have been so gutted. But I can confidently say I haven’t seen anyone with a dress similar. So I’m really pleased with it”.

The location of Olivia and Bradely’s wedding has been kept under wraps, but Attwood revealed one small detail about the setting. “It’s the first wedding the venue has ever done, so it’s top secret”.

Just last week the former I'm a Celeb star revealed her new series Olivia Marries Her Match would be airing soon and will show the couple on the lead up to their big day.

Olivia and her footballer fiancé first met back in 2015. Bradley then got down on one knee while the pair were on holiday in Dubai in 2019.

Dillinger’s has been at the heart of restaurant dining in Ranelagh since 2009. Times, and the neighbourhood, changed. Dillinger’s is now a little more mature, but still a lot of fun! The food is fresh and local, the service is professional, and the cocktails are quirky and boozy. The welcome is warm, brunch is back and buzzing, regular ticketed themed supper clubs are a roaring success, vinyl adds to the vibe and there’s high chairs and mini cutlery for the kids; it all comes together to create a very democratic Dillinger’s – All Ways Welcome.

Extensively refurbished, with a very new look, the bar is central to the hospitality, as popular as ever with singles and couples for dining or just drinks. A choice of tables or booths still echo that American diner feel, as do the pouring pots of coffee, central to the weekend brunches! From the Book Swap shelf to the new Dillinger’s Loyalty Card, it’s no surprise that a new following of regulars is discovering this neighbourhood gem.

Current specials include the Dover Sole (€45 for two), served Tuesday and Wednesday. Filleted table side and served with a caper sauce and a choice of two sides. Select a bottle of wine and you have the perfect, great value mid-week supper. There’s also two for one cocktails on Sundays at the bar – so put the bartenders through their paces, they enjoy the challenge, and the banter!

The dinner menu is served Tuesday to Sunday evening from 5pm. Start with Achill Island Pacific Oysters with shallot vinaigrette (from €17 for 6), or the Crudo of Blue Fin Tuna, apple, cucumber and Xvo (€18) from the starters. Pasta made in house daily elevates the Goat's Curd Tortellini with tea soaked raisins, pine nuts and sage brown butter (€16) and the Pappardelle with Eight Hour Braised Beef Shin Ragu (€21). While there’s a focus on fish, the ‘Cooked over Coal’ section on the menu makes for irresistible meats – whether it’s the 28 Day Dry Aged Picanha Tagliata with fries (€28) or the simply perfect Irish Beef Burger with pastrami, Monteray Jack, house pickle and fries (€18).

Weekend brunch features some new dishes and old favorites too. Classics include the signature Chicken and Waffles with maple syrup (€18), equal in popularity to the new Black Currant House-Cured Salmon, poached eggs, sauteéd spinach, pickled blackberry, and served on a slice of crisp sourdough bread (€22). Served Saturday and Sunday from 11.30am to 3:30pm and from 12pm on Bank Holiday Mondays.

With a full bar, beer on tap, creative cocktails and an extensive wine list, there’s a tipple to suit any occasion. The cocktail menu was developed by Jesse Chinn, with more than a nod to his South African roots!

The food is by Executive Chef Atish Bhuruth and Head Chef Roberts Augstkaln. Food suppliers include Hussey Fruit and Veg, Caterway, La Rousse, Wrights of Marino, JJ Young Butchers, Gubbeen, Real Olive Co, and Tartine Bakery.

TD Paul Murphy has called out demonstrators for choosing to protest outside his home.

The People Before Profit politician took to Twitter just before 8pm yesterday evening to share an image he captured from upstairs in his home, showcasing the protestors standing outside the property.

Many of the demonstrators chose to carry signs with them, with some reading: “Concerned Communities say NO.”

“Far right protesting outside our home right now,” Paul wrote alongside the snap he shared.

“We were literally preparing to give our newborn baby a bath,” he added, referring to baby Jupiter whom he welcomed in February with his partner Jess Spear.

Many have since decided to show support and solidarity to Paul and his family following the incident.

“This is so wrong. Whatever the grievance, take it to the Dail or even outside a local office. Never to a family home. There are better ways,” replied fellow politician Jeff Rudd.

“Paul that's terrible solidarity with you and family, stay safe. Really the lowest,” commented Green Party Councillor Donna Cooney.

“Solidarity with you and your family Paul,” added Socialist Party member Ruth Coppinger.

This personal protest is just the latest that high-profile politicians have had to endure recently, including the likes of government ministers.

As a result, the Government has recently implemented additional measures to ensure the safety of all politicians.

TDs and senators can now claim up to €5,000 to increase security at their homes and constituency offices.

Stacey Solomon has begun preparations for her first-ever tattoo.

The 33-year-old revealed earlier this month that she was considering getting a tattoo dedicated to her children but was unsure if she should go through with it.

Now, Stacey has shared an exciting update with her 5.6M Instagram followers by posting a video of herself in a tattoo parlour.

The Loose Women panellist revealed she hasn’t had the tattoo done yet, but was having stencils applied to check the sizing and positioning of her ink.

In the video, Stacey’s oldest son’s name, Zachary, can be seen being placed on the back of her shoulder by her tattoo artist brother.

The mum-of-five explained, “So my brother is a tattooist & he kept the shop open late tonight so we can have a little stencil session”.

“I can’t believe I’m actually doing it. So excited. Just a little play around tonight while the kids are in bed then we can go for it when I’m back from Paris”, she added.

Her original plan was to get all of her children’s names inked on her in Hebrew, but Stacey admitted she wondered if it was just going through a midlife crisis or had heightened hormones.

Credit: Instagram

Speaking on her Instagram Stories, Stacey asked her fans, “Am I having a midlife crisis or is it my hormones? Is it weird to get a tattoo in your 30s? I think I really want one, I've never had one before”.

“Have any of you got tattoos, like, later on in life? Not that I'm later on in life, but you know what I mean”.

Solomon continued, “Like, most people get them when they're really young. Have any of you got them in your 30s-plus and been really happy about it? Will I regret it? Is it my hormones?”.

Now that Stacey has decided to go ahead with her tattoo, we can’t wait to see what it turns out like once she gets it done!

If you haven’t heard of the curly girl method yet, I don’t know what to tell you. You’ve potentially been missing out on a seriously life-changing beauty hack.

Basically, if you have hair that you suspect might secretly be curly, there’s a way to find out by changing how you wash your hair. If your hair has never been totally straight or totally wavy, or gets really frizzy when you try to straighten it, it might be a sign that this is something you should try! The concept was thought up by hairstylist and curl expert Lorraine Massey who actually wrote a book ‘Curly Girl; The Handbook’ about her discoveries!

India Batson, Instagram beauty influencer shares her tips and tricks for a) seeing if you actually have curly hair and b) how to care for it if you do!

The Curly Girl Method

  1. Wash your hair with a sulphate-free shampoo and then condition it, scrunching the conditioner into the hair using a generous amount.

  2. With the conditioner still in your hair, run a wide tooth comb through it to detangle. Wash out most but not all the conditioner.

India’s Do’s and Don’ts are extensive, but well worth it in the long run. Curls can get frizzy, fall out of their pattern or end up in a tangle if not properly cared for, so these tips and tricks should help you to get the most out of your ‘do!

‘I had SO much fun making this video on the do’s and dont’s of wavy/curly hair.’ India shared in her caption. ‘Now please bear in mind, some rules are meant to be broken, so if something I list as a “don’t” works for you, more power to you…I’m teaming up with Bondi Boost on their curl bo$$ line. It’s curly girl method approved and perfect for waves and curls alike!…The conditioner is hydrating & creamy without being too rich.’

Do’s for curly hair

Rinse out your conditioner with cold water. If your hair is especially porous, the heat will make it frizzy, even if you use conditioner. By rinsing with cold water, you seal the hydration into your hair and end up with sleek, bouncing curls.

Do a hair mask every now and again before you shower to give that extra boost of hydration before washing your hair. It can help with definition and detangling later and gives your hair that extra bit of shine.

Use a lightweight styling cream or gel on damp hair for major volume. Using heavier products makes the curls go into that 90s wet look – if you’re going for that then go for it, but it you’re looking for volume, the less heaviness in your hair, the better. Scrunch it in to get really defined curls.

Protect your curls when you go to bed by using the pineapple method (tying your hair into a loose ponytail on top of your head using a silk scrunchie) or else protect it with a silk turban or scarf to ensure your curls keep their definition and sleekness and don’t have to be brushed the next morning, losing all that work from the day before.

Don’ts for curly hair

Don’t shampoo your ends in the shower. Concentrate the shampoo at your roots and avoid the ends to avoid drying them out. They’ll end up frizzy and dying for hydration. Massage shampoo into the roots instead and allow the suds to slide down. Scrubbing at your ends will only end in tangles.

Don’t condition your roots if you want voluminous curls. Conditioner will weigh your hair down at the root and banish any bounce and volume you hoped to have. Instead, concentrate the conditioner on the length of your hair and particularly towards the ends. Any leftover conditioner on your palms can be smoothed through your roots for a little hydration, with none of the heaviness.

Don’t use a cotton towel. The fibres will undo all the work you’ve just don to hydrate your hair and will leave it utterly frizzy and tangled. It will be a nightmare when it dried, ending up in a snarl instead of in beautiful individual curls.
