Yearly Archives: 2017

In these times, it can sometimes feel like Ireland has gone backwards, or our residents aren't creative enough to build major empires for themselves.

But honestly, that couldn't be further from the truth.

While attending Ireland's Best Young Entrepreneur Awards in Google HQ yesterday, I saw first-hand just how driven, smart, and ambitious young entrepreneurs in Ireland are.

The awards are aimed at people between the ages of 18 and 35, who own, manage and control their own businesses – and there’s a lot of reasons why they enter this competition.

There is a €2m investment fund and business support to help their businesses along the way. There's also various amounts of prize money given out to winners and runners-up in each field.

But their drive extends far beyond monetary incentive as I discovered yesterday.

These people are passionate about their businesses, they’re not afraid to take risks and they believe in themselves – something we should all try, no matter what line of work we’re in.

Ciara Clancy, who took home two awards for Best Established Business and Ireland’s Best Young Entrepreneur, is not only changing the medical game for Parkinson's Disease in Ireland, but pushing boundaries all over the world with her app.

Richard Barrett, who created Pundit Arena, is giving sports journalism a new playing field and Roisin Hogan, who used to be an accountant, is now trying to change how busy women eat on-the-go.

No two businesses were the same, yet they all gained from being part of this programme.

Entrepreneurship in Ireland has majorly grown over the past five years, with start-up businesses accounting for two thirds of all new jobs in Ireland.

And with this being Local Enterprise Week, you can see how much backing start-up businesses have in Ireland, which is something I never realised before.

€32 million was invested in start-up businesses last year, with Enterprise Ireland supporting 229 new companies.

The government want you to be creative. They want you to come to them with a business idea. And, they want to help you make that vision a reality.

And as airy-fairy as that may sound, it's clear that more people need to do it.

We complain that there’s no jobs in Ireland, yet the nominees who took part in yesterday’s awards ranged from professionals in journalism, agriculture, motors, healthy eating and even bee-keeping.

There was a niche for everyone. They all created jobs in their local county, but most of all, they have all created a business that will not only help the economy, but bring new life to it.

Going forward I just hope Ireland becomes more creative and more young Irish people are inspired to create new businesses on their own. It's where the future is at.

So many people are fighting to create a better workforce, a better living standard… a better Ireland.

The help and support is there for you. Grab it. Even if you only have a small idea, but are determined to make it work – just go for it.

Entrepreneurs create businesses, jobs, and growth in Ireland. They are the heroes of our economy.

So g'wan, be a hero.

Unless you've been living under a rock in recent years you'll know that when it comes to the world of fitness, HIIT is where it's at these days.

Hours spent jogging on the treadmill have been replaced by high intensity interval training sessions, and while so many of us consider ourselves converts, it turns out we're not quite as clued up as we think we are.

Creative manager of group fitness at Equinox, Rachel Vaziralli, recently explained that while fitness fanatics are, indeed, lunging, squatting and jumping like good things, they aren't taking the intensity of their regime into account.

With many gym-goers boasting that they can endure 60-minute HIIT sessions, Rachel is here to tell them that if they're still exercising after an hour, they're not working hard enough.

"If you can go longer than 30 minutes, you weren’t actually working hard enough,” she told Well and Good. "The whole point is to push to unsustainable intensities."

In other words, if you put enough effort into your session in the first thirty minutes, there is no need to push past that limit (not lest because you shouldn't be able!)

Commenting on those who supposedly extend HIIT sessions, Rachel insists that there's little to be gained from the endeavour.

"What happens is your body just adjusts, so you hold back on the intensity,” Rachel explains. “You’re spending more time than [necessary] for the same results.”

So, if you're determined to become a HIIT aficionado, it's worth remembering that pushing yourself to the limit in the first 30 minutes is the name of the game.

Anything after that is eating into Netflix time…

Ladies, we officially have a new hero, and he goes by the name Martin Scally.

And believe us, by the time you finish watching his video, you'll have a new hero too.

As part of his campaign to nab the position of SU President for UCC, the student created a Love Actually-inspired video which has everyone here at SHEmazing! HQ falling over themselves this morning.

There are few words which will do this video justice, so we're gonna let the man himself (oh, and Keira Knightley) take it from ehre.

Martin, you have our vote…

With previous winners including Gavin James, Two Door Cinema Club and The Script,  it’s no real surprise music fans are clamouring to attend an event which honours the best and brightest on the Irish music scene this week.

The RTÉ Choice Music Prize, which will be awarded in Vicar St this Thursday, will pay homage to the people which brought us the best Irish Album of the Year along with the Best Irish Song.

Alongside 11 international music industry delegates, the venue will play host to some of our favourite acts including Lisa Hannigan, The Divine Comedy and We Cut Corners.

As there are only a handful of tickets left, we suggest you pick yours up at your local Ticketmaster outlet for a very reasonable €26.50 now.

But listen, if you're not lucky enough to nab yourself a ticket and head along in person, you can still get a slice of the action.

As part of the new partnership with RTÉ, the event will be broadcast live on RTÉ 2fm in a special four-hour extended programme from 7-11pm and on RTÉ2 as part of a special RTÉ Choice MusicPrize TV programme on Saturday  March 18.

Everyone's a winner!

Now, don't get us wrong. We love a good wedding cake. Especially the cakes that come with different flavoured layers. Yum.

But, now that we've come across these particular cakes, we couldn't be more happy. Because… cheese.

Yep, we're major cheese lovers here in Shemazing HQ, and Sheridan's Cheesemongers has made our cheesy delights come true.

The company has started to create wedding cheese cakes, and not only do they look great, they taste pretty fab too.

Sheridan's Facebook page is also full to the brim of happy couples smiling beside their cheese cakes, so it looks like it's a must for any cheese-loving brides out there.

We're not getting married, but this is definitely going in the (nonexistent) wedding plans.

The time has come, ladies.

After years of begging Facebook to install a 'dislike' button, the folk behind the social media site have finally listened to their users, and will be trialling the feature on their messenger app.

According to emerging reports, the social media giant intend users to attach emojis to messages in much the same way we attach reactions to public posts.

But don't get too excited just yet because – for the time being – the feature will only be rolled out across a small number of users.

Commenting on developments, a Facebook representative said: "We’re always testing ways to make Messenger more fun and engaging."

"This is a small test where we enable people to share an emoji that best represents their feelings on a message," they added.

Up until now, the global corporation have railed against demands for a dislike button due to fears it would encourage online bullying and isolate potential clients.

My boot scootin' baby is driving me crazy…

Yep, iconic 90s band Steps are making a comeback. All original members are planning to embark on an arena tour later this year and will travel all over the Ireland and UK.

Steps are also set to release a new album ahead of their 20th anniversary, Party On The Dancefloor.

But, that's not just it. Steps will be supported by The Vengaboys, and we honestly don't think this gig could get any better.

Speaking about their new music and upcoming tour, the band said that fans are going to love it all, as it will be a mix of new and old.

“This is the album we think our fans have been waiting for. It was very important for us to have a hint of the past but to try to blend it into modern day music," they said in a statement.

“We think Steps are a little bit of what everyone needs right now. We can’t wait to take the new album plus all our favourite hits out on the road."

The tour kicks off in our fair city on November 13, with tickets going on sale this Friday.

It has been reported that Netflix and the creators of Gilmore Girls are in talks about a new series.

A Year in the Life left us all on a major cliffhanger, and many fans became annoyed because well, we all want to know what happened next.

Those 'final four words' shocked the best of us and they can't just leave us there… right?

According to Associated Press, chief content creator of Netflix, Ted Sarandos, confirmed that talks are taking place, but they're in the "preliminary" stages.

"We obviously loved the success of the show, fans loved how well it was done, it delivered what they hoped.

"The worst thing is to wait a couple of years for your favourite show to come back and for it to disappoint you, but they sure delivered and people were really excited about more and we have been talking to them about the possibility of that."

Let's hope we'll soon be seeing Rory and Loreli sipping on their coffees (Rory's decaf), discussing those last four words…

McFlurries are the delicious, creamy desserts that top off every Maccy D's meal.

It just wouldn't be the same without them. But, lately it seems like the McFlurry machines are always out of order.

Well, it looks like McDonald's are going to change that pretty soon by installing new machines all over Europe and the US.

There has been no confirmation that the new machines will produce the McFlurries that we all know and love, but the Wall Street Journal is claiming that the machines will produce way more flavours than before.

No set date for machine removal has been set yet, but knowing McDonald's it'll be happening soon.

Nicki gave his partner of nine years a ring for Christmas but say the word ‘fiancé’ is ‘cringe’.

“But we don’t want to make a thing of it, and for everyone to ask us whether we’ve set a date.”

New legislation may be introduced that will see learner drivers have their cars seized by Gardaí, if they are caught driving unaccompanied.

The Independent is reporting that the Minister for Transport, Shane Ross, is considering the change after their was concern over the number of incidents involving learner drivers.

Road Saftey campaigners, PARC, said that the new law should be a "no brainer."

A spokesperson for the group said: "When a garda stops a learner driver and charges him or her for driving unaccompanied, it makes no sense whatsoever that the garda must then allow that driver to continue their journey driving unaccompanied."

Minister Ross said in the Dáil: “Currently, gardaí have the power to detain vehicles in a number of circumstances such as where the vehicle is untaxed, uninsured or does not have an NCT,” he said.

“An extension of this power to cover vehicles being driven by unaccompanied learners would require an amendment to Section 41 of the Road Traffic Act, 1994. I would like to advise that this is something that I am willing to consider in the context of future road traffic legislation.”
