Yearly Archives: 2017

To be fair, it was a good one.

This weekend's Sunday Brunch saw stars such as Gossip Girl's Ed Westwick, X Factor star Louisa Johnson, and of course, our very own Shane Lynch of Boyzone fame join the show.

Shane was on the cooking programme to promote his new National Geographic TV series, Supercar Megabuild.

However, when he sat down on the couch with hosts Simon Rimmer and Tim Lovejoy, fans noticed something very "odd" about him.

He was speaking with an American accent.

The 40-year-old left viewers completely baffled, and many took to Twitter to express their confusion:

Did you catch him on the show? What's your opinion on the accent?

Buckfast has been with us for decades, and many of us probably have a (foggy) memory about drinking the tonic wine on a college night out.

It's not the tastiest of alcoholic drinks, but alas, we go back to it time and time again.

And don't even get us started on our love for doughnuts.

Well, some absolute genius has combined the two treats to create a Buckfast doughnut and we are ALL over it.

Coming to you from Doughzy Doughnuts in Belfast, the little beauties are said to be super boozy – and we can't think of anything better.

Check out its Facebook page to see when you can get your hands on these alcoholic delights.

If the rumours are true, we couldn't think of a better person to play Jasmine in the new Aladdin remake.

Despite having little acting experience, Jade Thirlwall of Little Mix fame is apparently in talks to take on the role of the princess.

According to The Sun, Jade is in the line up of possible people to play the character, and as she is of Yemini and Egyptian descent, her fans believe she would qualify ethically to play the Arab beauty.

A source told the publication: "Jasmine is Jade’s perfect role, so she’s delighted to have got this far in the process.

"The talks have been going on for some time now," the insider said.

“And the longer they go on, the better her chances are looking. All of the girls have their fingers crossed for her, as they always support each other."

Since April, there has been an open call for actors between the ages of 18-25 for the roles of both Aladdin and Jasmine.

Shooting for the film begins this summer and will last up to six months, which would mean a big commitment for Jade.

Ireland mainly sticks to core subjects, even in transition year when students have the freedom to test various modules.

But something that has never popped up before is fishing on the curriculum.

Yep, transition year students from CBS James Street in Dublin are taking part in a new joint initiative by Inland Fisheries Ireland and eir which involves classroom lessons, fieldwork studies and practical exercises on fly fishing.

Gray Fishes on Yellow Crate

According to The Journal, it aims to teach students about fly fishing with the hopes of making it into to a lifelong hobby for them.

In recent weeks the students enjoyed class trips to Annamoe Trout Fishery in Wicklow and Courtlough Fishery in Balbriggan, where they practiced their rod skills and fished for rainbow trout using the methods that they have been taught in class.

Suzanne Campion, Head of Business Development with Inland Fisheries said: “We hope that the lessons learnt on important issues such as conservation and environmental protection will stay with students through life and that ultimately they will become custodians of our rivers and lakes.

"We also endeavour to get them hooked on fishing for life so it was fantastic to see a huge amount of skill evident in this group.”

Would you have fancied taking on this subject when you were in school?

Apparently, Ed Sheeran is engaged to his partner Cherry Seaborn… well, if Russell Crowe has anything to say about it.

According to The Sun, the actor let slip that Cherry is Ed's "fiancée" while discussing his relationship with the chart-topper.

He said: “We became friends through people we know and he was on tour and came to stay.

"We just became friendly and he has since come back with his fiancée for more time and stuff.”

So far, Ed's team have stayed quiet about the news, but since the two lads are quite close, it's possible Ed confided in Russell.

The question is though, will they remain friends now that Russell has let out Ed's secret?

We think so, and we also hope the news is true.

Congrats guys!

Blogger Conf 2017 kicked off today, and a whole host of bloggers and industry insiders joined forces to discuss the ins and outs of building your brand.

Eimear Varian-Barry was on the impressive agenda to discuss her success on Instagram, and how she has carved out her own stand-out space on the photo sharing site.

According to the veteran Instagrammer, there is a place on social media for everyone, and there are a few simple ways to make the most of your feed.

  • Be real

According to Eimear, people are over highly edited, curated content, and now want a more authentic experience.

Her advice is to never edit your face, and be mindful of using obvious filters or editing techniques, although teeth whitening is the exception.

  • Theme

Eimear admits to being very picky about her theme on her Instagram page, which has ony added to her success.

The mum takes ages to choose the right photo to upload to her feed, and always tries to use photos shot in natural light for consistency, which is key.

  • Hashtags

Hashtags can be an amazing way to up your likes and follows if you choose them wisely.

Hashtags that are relevant to the post can massively drive engagement, so do some research about your niche and apply tags that work for that niche.

  • Timing

According to Eimear, the new Instagram algorithm is a 'total mind feck' for bloggers and influencers, so getting the timing of a post right is essential.

Eimear advises 9pm as the best time for people to be checking their Insta feeds to potentially like your post.

We'll be spending the evening adjusting our Instas…

Last night the iconic LGBT bar The George was vandalised.

The bar and club, which has maintained its place on South Georges Street, Dublin since 1987, was defaced with homophobic slurs.

According to the No Hate Speech Ireland group, the incident could be treated 'as homophobic in it's intent' under the Incitement to Hatred Act 1989.

'In general this is quite a shocking incident as that area of Dublin in mostly quite safe and LGBTQ friendly,' said No Hate Speech Ireland spokesperson Ian McGahon.

'In the graffiti they used the swastika, this is particularly disturbing given that that thousands of gay men were sent to their death in the Nazi Germany concentration camps.'

'The graffiti used was abusive and is certainly homophobic in using the Nazi symbols and also the terminology 'f****** out.'

'It could certainly be registered on the Garda pulse recording system as homophobic in it's intent.'

'In general there have been very very few prosecutions under the incitement to hatred act 1989.'

'No Hate Speech movement Ireland would support this type of crime to be punished under hate crime legislation.'

The only words we want to utter on a Saturday night are 'pass the gin, please.'

We all have our brand of choice, but one gin company is winning all the awards for quality.

A Devon-based gin company has been named the best in the world,a and there is no way we're not going to try and acquire a bottle.

A post shared by Salcombe Gin (@salcombegin) on

According to The Plymouth Herald, Salcombe Distilling Company, based in South Devon, won two awards at the San Francisco World Spirit Competition 2017, which is one of the most prestigious spirit events in the world.

The distillery creates Salcombe Gin, and won first place in both the World Spirit Competition and the Beverage Testing Institute awards.

The gin is distilled with 13 botanicals that are hand sourced from around the world, including Macedonian juniper, English coriander seed and fresh citrus from historical trading routes once served by the famous Salcombe fruit schooners. Sounds lit.

'We are ecstatic our Gin is now being recognised internationally, an incredible accolade after all the hard work of the past year,' said the company's co-founder, Angus Lugsdin.

'Our main objective is to produce an exceptional hand crafted gin and we strive for perfection in every step of the process. These awards are a real testament to our ethos and hardworking team in Salcombe, Devon.'

There were 2,252 other entries in the running for the title, so it was no mean feat.

'Launched in July 2016, Salcombe Distilling Company is still a relatively new brand, so to be recognised globally at this early stage is a huge honour,' said Howard Davies, the other co-founder of the Salcombe Distilling Company.

'It's already been an extremely busy year for us, launching our new Gin School in Salcombe where the curious gin lover can develop and distil their very own bottle of gin.'

'Plus the distillery bar overlooking the estuary is proving hugely popular with locals and tourists in the area. We are also busy sampling our delicious Gin at many food and drink festivals and events across the country.'

We know what we're ordering on pay day. Thankfully the Devon-based company has an online shop

A Labour Party gender pay gap reporting Bill will be introduced in the Senate on Wednesday next week.

A submission from the Irish Women's Council of Ireland found that on average, childless women earn 17 per cent less than men, while working mothers earn 14 per cent less than their male counterparts.

IMPACT Trade Union has outlined a few ways why the passing of the proposed Gender Pay Gap Information Bill 2017 will be the right measure to tackle the gender pay gap

'1. Gender Pay Equality Seal of Approval: Knowing an organisation’s gender pay gap statistics will change how people look for work.

Imagine you’re a young female graduate scrolling through ads on a jobs website. In a world where pay gap reporting is the law, that jobs website could put a ‘gender pay equality badge’ beside certain employers’ names. Like a blue tick on Twitter, these little seals of approval could help navigate people through the confusing landscape that is the job hunt.

2. Competing to Pay You Better: Peer pressure is a powerful force. If firms’ pay gaps are public knowledge, those organisations are incentivised to compete with each other in order to narrow their pay disparities and, thereby, attract and retain the best female talent.

3. Knowledge is Power: If you’re a woman on her way into a salary negotiation, knowing your employer’s gender pay gap is a really valuable piece of information. It gives you a sense of where on the ladder you’re likely to be.

4. Running With the Right Crowd: Being able to see various companies’ pay gaps will help Government make tendering decisions and help firms make choices about who to engage as suppliers. Government and companies would be able to decide not to work with firms whose pay gaps are too large. This creates additional pressure on organisations to reduce their gender pay gaps.

5. It’s Achievable: This is a realistic measure. It’s both of benefit to workers and pragmatically achievable for employers.

Any firm with more than 50 employees is likely to have some kind of payroll software. It shouldn't’t take more than a few minutes using even the most basic payroll programmes to calculate a gender pay gap.

6. Canary in the Coalmine: The pay gap is a single, simple metric that encapsulates a lot of complexity. Like a canary in a coal mine, publishing it will help companies measure the success (or otherwise) of any other workplace policies around gender.

If the headline pay gap figure goes in the right direction, then something is working; if it doesn’t, then it’s not. The overall number will also help companies benchmark themselves against other employers over time.

7. Symbolic Gesture: Introducing gender pay gap reporting would represent an important symbolic gesture towards gender equality in Ireland at a time when we really need it. It’s important that our elected officials demonstrate a commitment to the principles of gender equality now more than ever.'

You cant scroll through Instagram these days without seeing a plate of smashed avocado or an intricately poured latte.

Now, one Aussie cafe has combined the two to create the ultimate in hipster frankenfood.

The Turner Cafe has created a latte so Instagrammable, you'll barely be able to choose a filter.

Introducing, the avolatte.

The avolatte is a perfectly poured latte which is served inside an empty avocado shell.

The internet has been in uproar since this hipster hybrid came to public attention, with some finding the idea revolting.

'If you make an avolatte, please punch yourself in the face for me? Also, I hate you,' said one.

What do you think? Way too weird or secretly a cool idea?

Last night, on the anniversary of the Marriage Equality referendum, the iconic LGBT bar The George was vandalised.

The bar and club, which has maintained its place on South Georges Street, Dublin since 1987, was defaced with homophobic slurs.

The offensive language included the use of the term 'f*****,' with the phrase 'f****** out' scrawled across the door of the venue.

The hateful language was accompanied by etchings of swastikas.

The bar opened eight years before homosexuality was legalised in Ireland, and this weekend intended to host celebrations for the second anniversary of the Yes Equality referendum.

'Gardaí in Pearse Street are investigating this incident,' a Gardaí spokesperson confirmed.
