Shift work is tough in anyone's language.

For anyone who works irregular hours, that feeling you're out of step with the rest of the world is all too palpable at times.

But, unfortunately, the downsides to shift work don't stop there.

According to a study conducted by researchers at Uppsala University, working shifts can result in cognitive impairment meaning that shift workers find it more difficult to retain information, concentrate and make decisions.

Commenting on the findings of their reseach, Dr Christian Benedict said: "Our results indicate that shift work is linked to poorer performance on a test that is frequently used to screen for cognitive impairment in humans."

But if you think opting out of shift work will immediately restore cognitive function to its former glory, this is, unfortunately, not the case.

"The poorer performance was only observed in current shift workers and those who worked shifts during the past five year.In contrast, no difference was observed between non-shift workers and those who had quit shift work more than five years ago."

"The latter could suggest that it may take at least five years for previous shift workers to recover brain functions that are relevant to the performance on this test," he added.

How uplifting…

We all know knowledge is power, but there’s one thing about retaining information, and another about putting this information into practice, right?

For as long as most of us can remember we’ve been warned about the dangers of sun exposure, and yet a worrying number of Irish women still leave themselves vulnerable to skin damage by neglecting to apply sun protection.

Interestingly, 77% of Irish women agree their face is the biggest area of concern for premature ageing, and yet just one quarter of Irish women only use sun protection while abroad.

Considering that 80% of a person’s annual UV exposure happens in day to day life not on holiday, the findings established in The City Sun Report, which was conducted by Garnier Ambre Solaire, are a huge cause for concern.

So, why are we failing to get proactive on this front?

Well, 27 per cent of women admitted annoyance with the sticky feeling while 12 per cent said the fear of it ruining their make-up resulted in non-application.

Determined to counteract this issue, Garnie Amber Solaire have created a product which is designed to provide UVA and UVB protection with a lightweight skin feel, and can easily be applied either under or over makeup whilst on-the-go.

The Sensitive Advanced Protecting and Hydrating Face Mist has been given the thumbs up by Harley Street’s Dr Justine Kluk.

“With so many women in Ireland fighting premature ageing, one of the simplest ways to make a positive change to your skin is to apply a face mist with SPF50, UVB protection and UVA protection in the morning and regularly throughout the day as part of your daily beauty routine.”

If you’re serious about protecting your face against the sun (whether abroad or not), you can pick this product up in pharmacies, grocery stores and Penney’s stores nationwide for just €15.00

Now would be the optimum time to head to Dublin Zoo thanks to the nice weather, but now there's another reason to flock to the animal menagerie.

Dublin Zoo just announced the birth of a male Asian elephant calf.

Proud mum Yasmin gave birth to the healthy calf on Monday afternoon, after carrying him for a whopping 22-months.

The calf is estimated to weight about 20 stone, so that's one big baby.

This new arrival is the sixth elephant calf born at Dublin Zoo in less than three years.

'It is with immense pride that we announce the birth of the latest addition to the Asian elephant herd here at Dublin Zoo,' said Gerry Creighton, Operations Manager at Dublin Zoo.

'The birth of an Asian elephant is an amazing spectacle and this was no exception.'

'The arrival of the calf was greeted with celebratory trumpeting and each member of the herd, from the oldest to youngest, played a role in assisting with the birth.'

'We’ve been on an incredible journey over the past three years, overseeing the birth of six elephant calves, placing Dublin Zoo as one the most successful Asian elephant breeding programmes in the world.'

'The recent births are of huge significance for the future of the endangered Asian elephant.'

We can't wait to grab the family of the partner and head to the zoo to see the little guy for ourselves.

Dublin Zoo is also inviting the public to suggest a name for the new arrival based on his Asian origin.

Name suggestions can be submitted at www.DublinZoo.ie

If you're anything like us, you likely give yourself a mental pat on the back when you opt for a sparkling water over a sugar-laden fizzy drink.

When you're in the throes of a hangover, it feels particularly virtuous to choose sparkling water, but it turns out that consuming the carbonated drink can cause effects which many of us may be oblivious to.

Put simply, it can massively accelerate your appetite.

According to a study published in the journal of Obesity Research and Clinical Practice, the presence of carbon dioxide triggers a hormone in the digestive system called ghrelin, which alerts you to feelings of hunger.

Using rats in an initial study, researchers from the Birzeit University in Palestine gave the rodents tap water, flat soda, carbonated soda, and diet carbonated soda. Under scrutiny for six months, the rats who consumed the carbonated beverages ate more food than their counterparts.

But wait; why is sparkling water getting called out when the rats drank other carbonated drinks?

Well, when researchers studied human reaction to carbonated drinks, they established that men who drank sparkling water following their breakfasts had a staggering six times more ghreline in their bodies than those who drank still water.

We all knew fizzy drinks had their downsides, but we were certain we were playing it safe with a few bottles of sparkling water.

Looks like it's back to tap for us…

People are putting activated charcoal in absolutely everything lately – from ice cream to toothpaste (it allegedly gives you pearly whites!)

With that fact in mind, we can't say we're surprised by the fact that people have started putting the black powder in coffee.

That's right folks, the charcoal latte is here, and mermaid/ unicorn coffee never looked so boring.

The weirdest part? These drinks actually don't contain any caffeine: rather, swirls of charcoal are mixed with creamy milk to create a frothy morning beverage that is guaranteed to put a pep in your step.

Activated charcoal is thought to have a “detox effect” that will banish stomach bloat and calm any irritations – sounds good to us.

According to Jodie Brandman, a nutritional therapist who wrote an article about its benefits for the Huffington Post UK:

“Studies have shown that activated charcoal can be very effective at reducing intestinal gas, and that a daily intake could also protect against certain cardiovascular issues,” she wrote. “The substance is thought to additionally support the adrenal glands and prevent damage to the liver and kidneys.”

This black latte is being sold in trendy coffee shops all over the world, but it happens to be very easy to recreate, from the comfort of your own kitchen.

When a member of the US House of Representatives questioned why a man should have to contribute to pregnancy insurance during a recent town hall meeting in Dubuque Iowa, he was met with considerable backlash from those assembled.

However, it was the response of a woman named Barbara Rank which garnered the most attention in the days following Rod Blum's controversial remarks.

In response to Mr Blum's demands to 'get rid of some of these crazy regulations that Obamacare puts in such as a 62-year-old male having to have pregnancy insurance', Barbara put pen to paper and explained why the Congressman's demands had little grounding in reality.

"Congressman Rod Blum in a Dubuque town hall (Monday) night asked, “Why should a 62-year-old man have to pay for maternity care?" Barbara began in a letter to her local paper. "I ask, why should I pay for a bridge I don’t cross, a sidewalk I don’t walk on, a library book I don’t read?"

This is democracy manifest. from pics

"Why should I pay for a flower I won’t smell, a park I don’t visit, or art I can’t appreciate? Why should I pay the salaries of politicians I didn’t for, a tax cut that doesn’t affect me, or a loophole I can’t take advantage of?"

"It’s called democracy, a civil society, the greater good. That’s what we pay for," she finished in a letter which has made its way online and received more than 100,000 upvotes on Reddit.

Speaking to The Washington Post, Barbara admitted she was stunned by Blum's remarks as well as the reaction of the online community, saying: "Come on, didn’t we learn this in fifth-grade social studies?"

And that, ladies, is how it's done.

While our parents and grandparents are flat out lighting candles and praying to St Jude in the run up to exam season, apparently the people actually sitting the exams are being a little more practical.

Acknowledging that memory probably plays a bigger role in exam success than anything else, students across the UK and Ireland are turning to rosemary essential oil in order to boost their memories, and it all comes down to findings highlighted in a recent study.

With the help of 40 participants, researchers at the Northumbria University established that the herb's scent plays a part in memory control.

Dividing the group in two, researchers placed one group in a room diffused with rosemary oil while the other group was placed in an aroma-free room, and both groups were assigned memory-related tasks.

According to an ITV report, the study ultimately established that those in the rosemary-scented room performed better in the memory stakes than their counterparts.

Commenting on the findings, researcher Mark Moss provided possible reasons for the rosemary effect, saying: "It could be that aromas affect electrical activity in the brain or that pharmacologically active compounds can be absorbed when adults are exposed."

Since the study came to public attention, students have been flocking to stores in order to stock up, with Holland & Barrett confirming that sales have almost doubled compared since last year.

"Following the Northumbria University research pointing to a positive link between rosemary and memory in students, we saw a sharp rise in customer demand for our 100% pure Miaroma Rosemary Essential Oil, with sales increasing by almost 300 per cent on the previous week," a spokesperson for Holland & Barrett said.

"As exam season continues, we have increased provision in store to meet demand and our trained associates are on-hand as always to answer any questions customers may have about the benefits of aromatherapy and essential oils."

Something to think about…

Now, the couple are back to reveal some pretty big news.

May we present: The First Dates first baby.

The couple also appeared on Good Morning to discuss their new little family, with Ibiba saying: 'He's been the best support for me since the beginning. '

92.9 per cent of Ireland’s 140 identified bathing waters met the minimum required standard for sufficient water quality, according to a new report from the Environmental Protection Agency

Ireland also saw an increase in its standard of water quality, with 85.7% per cent of bathing water classed as being either excellent or good, an increase on last year which sat at 83 per cent.

However, six bathing waters in Ireland failed to meet the minimum required EU standards and were classified as being of poor quality.

Clifden, Ballyloughane and Tra na bhForbachabeach, cared for by Galway City Council, Merrion Strand of Dublin City Council, Loughshinny and Portrane of Fingal County Council all failed to meet the required standards.

Some of the issues raised include surface waters, drainage misconnections and birds in Merrion Strand.

Septic tank discharges in Loughshinny and sewage discharges and surface run-off in Portrane were also identified as problem areas.
