As a revered athlete and an Olympic medallist, it would seem Michael Phelps has little to be angry about, but when a recent photo of the US swimmer surfaced, we all realised how wrong we were.

After being snapped looking like a toddler who had been put on the bold step at a birthday party, Michael realised there's little he can do right now that won't catch the attention of the media and the wider public.

With the image circulating widely online and social media users offering their own (often hilarious) explanations for Michael's stinker of a glare, it seems like the swimmer suddenly realised he'd need to address it himself.

"I just had music going on in my head. I had thoughts going on in my head, spitting water a little bit all over the place, so I was in my own zone," he explained in a response which has many of us calling B-S.

With millions suggesting that Michael's glare was directed at rival swimmer, Chad le Clos, Michael shut down the rumours.

Speaking to Today, he insisted: "I was not intentionally mean mugging him or giving him a dirty look."

A likely story Michael, a likely story.

10 years ago, Katie Ledecky was just nine years of age, and as a keen swimmer, was a massive fan of Michael Phelps.

Over the course of the past decade, Katie has carved an incredibly successful career for herself in the world of swimming, and as a six-time Olympic medalist, can now officially count herself among her hero's peers.

And it was this incredible progression which made a photo of a clearly excited Katie meeting Michael back in 2006 all the more poignant in the eyes of the public.

Acknowledging people's interest in the photograph, the US teammates decided to recreate the image…with a twist.

Instead of maintaining the same roles, Michael paid tribute to Katie's progress and incredible achievements since their first meeting, and was photographed asking for her autograph this time around.

Sharing the photo on their Twitter page, USA Swimming wrote: "Vice-Versa: @katieledecky @MichaelPhelps re-create famous photo with opposite roles #riotoday #SwimUnited."

Twitter users were all over the adorable twist on the throwback snap and wasted no time sharing their thoughts on the upload.

"I love this pic! It shows dreams can come true! Michael, you are truly an inspiration! Thank you!" wrote one while another added: "Love this! Thanks for inspiring young swimmers!"

Retweeting the reverse snap on their page, The Today Show wrote: "A lot can change in 10 years! @katieledecky and 'MichaelPhelps in 2006 and today in Rio!"

"What an inspiration! Katie is well on her way to joining Phelps on the Mount Rushmore of swimming. Incredible!" replied a member of the public.

That's a framer.

If there's one thing we took from our primary school days, it's that you must show respect and maintain composure during the National Anthem… until the very last line when you can throw your head back and roar like a good thing about how great Ireland is.

And we're fairly certain that that's the case across the board.

So, when Michael Phelps, who won the 200-metre fly final on Tuesday, was seen guffawing during the US anthem at the presenting of medals in Rio, the public were only dying to know what had set the US swimmer off during a rendition of The Star-Spangled Banner.

And thankfully, he didn't keep his fans in suspense.

Speaking to NBC after being awarded his 20th gold medal, the 31-year-old athlete explained that it was the presence of his hometown mates in the crowd which had caused him to crack up at a certain point in the anthem.

"My boys from Baltimore were down on the other end, and back in Maryland, we all say “O!” for the Orioles during that part of the national anthem," he explained referring to the Baltimore baseball team.

"And all of the sudden I hear them roar “O!” and I knew exactly where it came from, and I just lost it because those guys came down from Baltimore and New York City to be here, and it’s just special to see those guys in the stands," he said.

His boys from Baltimore? Excuse us while we melt.

Oh, this is just brilliant.

The Oylimpics is well under way and while US swimmer Michael Phelps was waiting in the 'ready room' before qualifying in the 200m butterfly semi-final, he clearly wasn't impressed with his opponent's pre-race ritual of bouncing around with boxing-style dance moves.

Michael ended up pulling a face, and well, it has gone viral and everyone is LOVNG it:

Michael Phelps and his fiancée Nicole Johnson have made a huge announcement.

The couple is expecting their first child!

The couple, who got engaged in February, broke the news on social media Wednesday.

Michael Phelps girlfriend expecting first child son

“We found out 8 weeks ago we were expecting … Today we’re over 12 weeks and it looks like we’re having a boy!!!” Phelps wrote on Instagram.

In the picture, the two are looking very loved up by a swimming pool while the model held a tiny, MP-branded speedo. The former Miss California also shared their news on Instagram.

“Today marks 12 weeks and 5 days of us having a little one and yesterday we learned we’re having a BOY,” she added. “We couldn’t be happier!!”

Phelps and Johnson, both 30, have been dating on and off since 2007, and have long remained friends. After splitting in late 2011, the couple rekindled their romance in 2014.

The Olympian has been working hard to make his way back to the swimming pool after two DUI arrests, a stint in treatment and a six-month suspension from competing.

“I feel like I am okay and I am happy with who I am,” he said. “I feel like I’ve learned so much about myself, who I truly am. I can honestly say there aren’t many people who have seen who I really am.”

Meanwhile, just hours after the baby news broke, the swimmer’s self-proclaimed ex-girlfriend blasted the star in a rant.

Taylor Chandler – who claims that during her teens she changed her name and used testosterone blockers before having sexual re-assignment surgery – took to Facebook shortly after the 30-year old broke the baby news.

Taylor, 40, once described their sex life as “amazing” after claiming they met on Tinder. However, Michael has never publicly commented on the matter.

“Let’s just say he makes Charlie Sheen look like an amateur,” she alleged in the lengthy post.

She continued: "He took everything from me, so yes I am bitter. He made me emotionally crippled, broken and a mere shell of who I used to be. After losing my career I did an adult film, not exactly something I ever would have chosen. I was trying to survive. That turned into me riding his coat tails… lol.”

Her comments also took a nasty turn as she spoke about his fiancée’s pregnancy: "I hope that baby is born free of STD's. He's not the safest when pursuing his extracurricular activities outside the girls he is "dating"," she went on to allege.

Less than a year ago Olympian Michael Phelps announced on social media that he was busted for drunk driving. Not once, but twice.

It is hard to believe but there was a time not too long ago when the champion swimmer’s coach was worried about what state he would find Michael in when he showed up for training.

Following his DUI arrests, Michael went to rehab for treatment and also faced a six-month suspension from competitive swimming.

In a recent interview with the press though, the man with the most Olympic gold medals in history seems determined to but those days behind him, according to reports in People magazine.

At least until after the 2016 Olympic Games in Brazil.

The 30-year old told the media this week, “Before I even went to court, I said to myself that I'm not going to drink until after Rio – if I ever drink again.”

While Michael will not be competing in the world championships due to his suspension, he will be competing this week in the U.S championships and has been determined to get himself back on track. He says that in the past he hasn't much that much effort into his sobriety:

"Going into 2008 and 2012, I didn't do that. I didn't say I was going to take a year off from drinking and not have a drink."

“I go to bed earlier. I sleep more. I wake up every day and have a completely clear head. I don't feel like my head went through a brick wall.”

He admits that some days he is tempted to ditch the training and have a pint instead, he knows it will be worth the hard work in the end.

"I have a year left in my career," he said. "If I really want it bad enough, I will make that sacrifice."

The 18-times gold medallist also announced his engagement to Nicole Johnson earlier this year. He has said that therapy has helped in confront his issues.

“I feel like I've learned so much about myself, who I truly am. I can honestly say there aren't many people who have seen who I really am."

Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps was arrested for drunk-driving early yesterday morning, he revealed on social media.

“Earlier this morning, I was arrested and charged with DUI, excessive speeding and crossing double lane lines,” read the statement posted on his Twitter and Facebook pages.

“I understand the severity of my actions and take full responsibility. I know these words may not mean much right now but I’m deeply sorry to everyone I have let down.”

Most fans were quick to reassure Michael, with comments like, “Fortunately no one got hurt. Learn from this and don't do it again” and “”Get yourself cleaned up and keep going. You are a role model, but you're also human.”

Others weren’t so kind:

The champion sports star was reportedly pulled over by police around 1.40am for driving at a speed of almost 40 miles (64 km) over the speed limit in his Range Rover.

Michael then failed his sobriety test and was taken into police custody at a local station. His blood alcohol level was nearly twice the legal limit, according to reports.

The 29-year-old gold medallist has been in legal trouble for drunk driving before. Back in 2004, when he was just 19, he was also caught for a DUI charge. At the time he apologised, saying he “made a mistake.”
