Yearly Archives: 2023

by

January 6th, also known as Little Women’s Christmas or Nollaig na mBan, was once considered the only day of the year when women were given an official break from the monotony of housework to meet with female friends and relatives in an effort to celebrate their own little Christmas.

Put simply, on the Feast of the Epiphany, men were left to deal with the gaf while the women folk deserted the house to eat, drink and sing like good things. They were, in other words, officially down for the sesh on January 6.

Nowadays, we use Nollaig na mBan as an opportunity to recognise the countless achievements of women, both past and present, in Irish society, and see January 6 as the perfect time to celebrate women's contribution to the history and culture of the State.

So, with that in mind, here are just 13 reasons why us women are pretty damn amazing.

1. We endure periods and childbirth – nuff said.

"Mother Nature is no mother of mine."

2. We understand, accept and embrace the healing power of a good cry.

"I can feel it building up inside me so I'm just going to go watch a few homecoming clips on YouTube."

3. We will always let a sister know when she's trailing toilet roll from her shoe or rocking a random price tag… whether we know her or not.

"Do not walk a step further. I got you."

4. We instinctively know when a friend is feeling low… even if she hasn't confided in us yet.

"Call me crazy, but are you OK? You've only tagged me in three memes this week,"

5. We endure stirrups and speculums at least once a year all in the name of our health.

"I just had my smear test, so excuse me while I question my wide-set vagina and heavy flow."

6. We deal with retailers' blatant inconsistencies when it comes to our dress size.

"That crowd would have you think I was the size of a shed, so no, I won't be going in there."

7. We instinctively know when we're being lied to.

"His left nostril flared. Busted."

8. We have the ability to text, talk, eavesdrop and slug a gin all at the same time.

"Would you listen to your man next to us? Oh,and have a read of this before I send it."

9. We know the value of a sentimental message on a friend's birthday.

"Where do I start? It was Junior Infants and you walked in…"

10. We have higher pain thresholds than our male counterparts.

"Ah, I'm grand! Sure, I didn't need that lung anyway."

11. Our seratonin levels are higher and more sensitive than mens' which mean we get much, much more pleasure out of chocolate than they do.

"Give me that family-size! It's wasted on you."

12. We know the horror when a hair wash day coincides with a gym session day.

"You're joking, babes? Listen, if I were you I'd go for the shampoo and feck the work-out."

13. We understand the joy when a friend connects with a hairdresser on an emotional level.

"And she gave you EXACTLY what you asked for, you say?!"

Davina McCall has opened up about her traumatic childhood experiences and her former drug addiction.

The Big Brother presenter appeared on the latest edition of Steven Bartlett’s The Diary of a CEO podcast, which was released earlier today.

In the interview, the 55-year-old revealed emotional details about her relationship with her mother. Davina detailed that “the moment I realised my mum wasn't coming back to pick me up” was the first defining moment of her life.

When Davina was just three years old, her mother Florence told her that she was going on holiday and would be staying with her grandmother. However, in reality, Florence had split up with Davina’s father and was leaving for Paris, with the young girl staying in the UK in the custody of her grandmother and father.

Davina then went on to detail that she still saw her mother occasionally, but things escalated when she became a teenager and she began to develop drug habits. "When I say I'm half nun, half wild child it's because of that life that I've had,” the Long Lost Family host explained on the podcast.

"Drugs at 12 with my mum, smoking weed at 12, coke at 15, 14 even. I did coke with my mum at 15, I did it with my sister at 14,” Davina recalled, getting emotional.

“Me and my mum only did drugs twice,” she added. “I mean, I know that's twice times too many in my book, but I don't want to give this impression that she and I were taking tonnes of drugs together cause that would be a false impression".

Davina further reminisced about how her teenage self tried to refrain from developing a drug addiction while she lived in the UK. “My life in Paris and my life in the UK must never know about each other”, she explained.

Unfortunately, Davina did become further addicted to drugs and alcohol in her twenties and has, over recent years, spoken about how it is a “miracle” that she survived her youth. The TV presenter has since been sober for the past two decades, and continues to educate others on the dangers of addiction.

Tributes are being paid to a bus driver who tragically lost his life in a single vehicle crash in Westmeath last night.

The accident occurred at approximately 5:30pm yesterday evening, in the townland of Killogeenaghan in Moate. The Bus Éireann vehicle that the 55-year-old male was driving left the road and subsequently crashed into a ditch.

There were 20 passengers on board with the driver, but he was the only person who did not survive the incident. Some of the passengers were treated at the scene for their injuries, while others were transferred to hospital to be treated with non-life threatening injuries.

The driver was taken to the Midland Regional Hospital in Tullamore in a serious condition, but he was later pronounced dead.

This morning, Garda Forensic Collision investigators have been thoroughly combing through the site of the crash, in an attempt to figure out its cause. Their ongoing investigation means that the road is currently closed and local diversions are in place for motorists.

Following the devastating tragedy, the mayor of the Athlone-Moate district, Vinny McCormack, has been speaking of his own shock and dismay. “It is an absolute terrible tragedy and our thoughts are of course with the driver and all of his family at this absolute terrible time,” he said.

“It is so sad that an experienced driver was in such a tragic accident while he was just doing his day to day job, and for something like that to strike while he was just trying to get from A to B is heartbreaking”, he added.

Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses of the bus crash to speak to them. Similarly, any road users with video footage (including dash cam) are being asked to make this available to Gardaí.

If anyone has any knowledge or information relevant to the investigation, they are being asked to contact Athlone Garda Station (090) 649 8550, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda station.

Operation Transformation returned to our screens earlier this week, so it’s only right for Ryan to welcome this year’s leaders Marie Clear, Andrea Daly, Lorraine Dempsey, Stephanie Bowden and Thomas Hynes onto the show as they kick start their new health and wellness journeys.

The nation is transfixed by the Regency Hotel murder trial, so the Sunday World's Nicola Tallant will discuss how the Kinahan gang rose to become one of the biggest crime cartels in the world. She will also talk about how their cartel is currently crashing down after they found themselves in the crosshairs of the US Authorities.

Ashley Olsen has been hearing wedding bells!

It has been reported that the former star of Full House has married her longtime partner Louis Eisner in a private ceremony.

According to Page Six, fashion mogul Ashley tied the knot with artist Louis on December 28, with the wedding being held at a private estate in Bel Air, California.

A source has noted that celebrations following the ceremony lasted well into the night, with “around 50 people or so total” in attendance.

The couple have always been notoriously private about their relationship and are rarely seen in public together, and so it is unsurprising that they have continued to keep quiet about their recent nuptials.

Ashley and Louis first entered into a relationship in 2017. However, the pair only went red carpet official in September 2021, when they attended the 20th anniversary gala for the nonprofit Young Eisner Scholars, a company which was set up by Louis’ father. The organisation aims to seek out promising students from underprivileged backgrounds, and helps to give them the tools they need to succeed in their education.

In terms of social media, the couple continue to keep things quiet, but in July 2021, Louis showcased a rare portrait of himself with Ashley as they enjoyed a hike together. The pair first sparked engagement rumours in July 2019, when Ashley was spotted wearing a ring on her left hand.

36-year-old Ashley is best known for her role in the 1990s sitcom Full House, in which she and her twin sister, Mary-Kate, starred in from the age of just nine months old. Finding success, the sisters then went on to star in several films together.

Since then, Ashley has set her acting career to one side and has focused more on the world of fashion. In 2006, she set up luxury fashion brand The Row with Mary-Kate, and has since gone on to found several more lifestyle and fashion brands.

Congratulations to Ashley on her exciting nuptials!

“I probably should’ve just shared it from the start because it’s not a big deal and I don't know why I’ve hid it this whole time but I don’t know, I just wanted to keep at least one thing to myself”.

Molly then went on to share her latest pregnancy cravings, saying that ice was her favourite snack at the moment, as well as sweet things.

"I don’t know why. I’ve always been blessed with quite good skin on my body apart from I do suffer with a bit of eczema.

The reality TV star then told her followers not to worry about stretch marks because it’s a normal thing for your body to get when it changes.

She also revealed that she has used a vast collection of stretch mark creams and oils but none of them have prevented her from getting her ‘tiger stripes’.

The first ever so-called ‘winter series’ of Love Island aired in January and February of 2020, and its final few weeks were consumed by the tragic death of the show’s original host, Caroline Flack.

For the past two years, ITV producers have been unable to make a second winter series happen in South Africa due to the impact of the Covid pandemic. However, now that restrictions are long gone, Love Island can finally return to South Africa.

As usual, this year’s winter cast have yet to be announced, but as the start date for the series is just a matter of days away, we have no doubt that we will be learning the identities of the Islanders very soon.

One of the most exciting things about this season is that we have a new host! Presenter Maya Jama has been tasked with stepping into the role of host, after Laura Whitmore decided to step away from Love Island at the end of last summer’s series.

“There are certain elements of the show I’ve found very difficult that cannot be changed some due to the format, including the flying back and forth to South Africa along with my new conflicting projects. I wish it was still possible but know you’ll be in safe hands,” Laura stated in August, revealing her surprise departure.

Then, in October of last year, and after weeks of speculation, it was announced that 28-year-old Maya Jama would be undertaking the role of Love Island host.

Selling Sunset star Heather Rae El Moussa has delighted fans by sharing a glimpse inside her baby’s nursery ahead of his arrival.

Heather took to Instagram to share a video of her giving a sneak peek tour of her baby boy’s nursery-to-be to her 3M Instagram followers.

The real estate agent revealed she included an elephant theme in the room as she is ‘obsessed’ with them, which can be seen throughout the nursery in the wall art, rocker and blanket.

Heather opted for a neutral colour palette of whites, blacks and greys with the crib, shelving and changing area, all matching the theme.

The 35-year-old captioned the post, “Baby El Moussa Nursery Reveal!! Now that his room is all ready I’m even more ready for him to be here!! But for now, I’m just going to take a second to soak it all in”.

“Tarek and I have been dreaming about what we wanted his nursery to look like for months and I’m so lucky to have found @babyletto to help make our vision a reality”.

She continued, “We were so specific in choosing these pieces and wanted his room to have a lot of luxe blacks, whites, and neutrals (like the rest of our house) while still feeling cosy so everything from Babyletto could not have been more perfect”.

Fans headed to the comments to share their opinions on the room, with some positive and negative feedback over the nursery’s design, many felt it was a cute theme choice overall.

One fan wrote, “Love the black, white, grey colour scheme but the elephants make the room for me”.

“It’s so beautiful!! You did such a wonderful job”, penned a second fan, while a third said, “Your excitement is so contagious. You’ll be a great mommy!”.

“It’s so adorable!! I’m obsessed with elephants as well!”, added another Instagram user.

The reality TV star revealed she was expecting her first baby in July of 2022 with her husband Tarek El Moussa. Tarek is already dad to two children- 12-year-old Taylor and seven-year-old Brayden, whom he shares with his ex-wife Christina Hall.

Chronic insomnia is a condition that affects millions of people all over the world, where individuals find it difficult or impossible to sleep.

The NHS Inform defines insomnia as a challenge to stay asleep “for long enough to feel refreshed the next morning." While it's treatable and can be targeted in a variety of ways, it can be hugely debilitating for those who suffer with it.

Changing your sleep habits, diagnosing underlying issues like mental or physical health condition or using over-the-counter sleeping medication can combat insomnia, but therapy can also help, according to a recent study.

The study, published in the British Journal of General Practice, has found that therapy may actually be the best choice of treatment.

Researchers at Queen's University Ontario, Canada, found that Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) helps to fight chronic insomnia successfully, despite the fact that it's often used to combat mental health problems like anxiety and depression.

CBT can apparently be used to change the way your mind thinks about sleep. It's regularly offered through a therapist with "the number of sessions you need depending on the difficulty you need help with.”

The British Association for Behavioural & Cognitive Psychotherapies describes CBT as therapy which is “based on the theory that thoughts, feelings, and what we do and how our body feels are all connected.”

The Guardian reports that the study was conducted through “four randomised control trials, with between 66 and 201 participants of mixed ages.”

Researchers from the trials found “that participants fell asleep on average nine to 30 minutes sooner after completing a course of CBT for insomnia and experienced a reduction of between 22 and 36 minutes in the amount of time spent awake after going to sleep.”

In the study, data analysts found that those who received CBT treatment for between four to six sessions found improvement with their insomnia and that these improvements “were generally well maintained for 3-12 months post-treatment.”

This was compared to the results of those who received treatment “in which the format or content veered substantially from conventional CBT which were less conclusive.”

With blue light from laptop and phone screens increasingly causing sleep disruption, and considering how hard it is to switch our brains off from the hectic attention-grabbing modern lifestyle, CBT therapy sounds great to us.
