A nationwide Financial Literacy Score Index, commissioned by Bank of Ireland and conducted by Red C, has revealed that Ireland has an average financial literacy score of 54%, with just over half of test questions answered correctly. The Index also reveals a striking difference across gender and age, with women scoring almost 10% lower than men. Overall, 18–34-year-olds score lowest (48%) with the highest score for over 65s (58%).

Compared to the Global S&P Financial Literacy survey, the most recent closely comparable global study, carried out in 2015, Ireland’s score of 54% significantly lags peers including Australia’s at 64%, Germany at 66% and the UK on 67%.

The Financial Literacy Index also found that very few (28%) feel knowledgeable about financial matters. While one third claim to know about mortgages, only one fifth say they are familiar with investments and pensions. Encouragingly, more than half (58%) said that they review their finances personally each month.

Key findings:

  • There is a striking difference across demographics – those aged 18-34 score lowest at 48% with the highest score of 58% achieved by the over 65s.
  • Socio-economic factors also play a part with the highest overall average score of 60% among ABC1s, compared to C2DE at 49% average score.
  • Financial literacy is a gender issue too. Women in Ireland score almost 10% lower than men (49% answered correctly by women versus 58% by men).
  • 26% of those who took part got less than 10 questions correct and would be considered to have very poor financial literacy.
  • The best scores are achieved on basic numerical tests where 69% were answered correctly and understanding of the price of items with 64%
  • Knowledge of savings and tax reliefs was lowest, with 37% of answers scored correctly on savings and 42% on tax relief
  • All groups do poorly on ways to reduce credit card interest with just 19% able to identify all ways to avoid interest on credit cards
  • All groups are challenged by the concept of compound interest – just 44% answering correctly.

Dawn Bailey, Head of Financial Wellbeing, Bank of Ireland said: “The right financial decisions can have a critical impact on our lives. If we are more financially knowledgeable and literate, we are better placed to make sound choices and improve our financial wellbeing.

“Good financial habits, like any positive habits, begin at an early age. Our schools are ideally placed to provide a head start in developing good financial habits for life, which is why Bank of Ireland has developed a comprehensive range of supports for teachers and parents.

“However, while we can play a strong role in helping improve financial literacy, to really move the dial requires a whole of society response. Bank of Ireland is engaging with other stakeholders to promote collaboration on this important issue.

“We will continue to invest in our financial literacy programmes with schools including our Money Smarts programme for secondary school students and Talking Cents resources for primary schools, because early intervention will ensure future improvement.”

Since 2017, 418,000 students across Irish primary and secondary schools have taken part in Bank of Ireland’s financial literacy programmes. The Bank will launch a major national advertising campaign this week to highlight the financial literacy supports available to teachers and parents.

One of Ireland’s top fashion designers, Helen Steele, along with a collection of some of the country’s leading artists, were picture perfect as they got in the frame today to launch Incognito 2023, Ireland’s most mysterious online art sale in aid of the Jack and Jill Children’s Foundation. What makes Incognito so special is that prospective buyers have absolutely no idea who the artist is behind their favourite postcard-sized artwork until the collection has sold out, and the artists are revealed.

The Incognito 2023 sale takes place on Wednesday, April 26, and the collection of almost 3,000 original pieces of postcard-sized art, by over 1,000 artists, will be available to view from midday tomorrow on www.incognito.ie. Interested purchasers are being strongly advised to register, view the collection, and create their Wish List of their top ten artworks in order of preference ahead of the sale, so as not to miss out on securing their favourites.

Actress Norma Sheahan

Helen Steele was joined at the launch by figurative and landscape artist Ruthie Ashenhurst, painter and sculptor Mick O’Dea, screen printer and portrait artist Emily McGardle, along with painters Julianne Guinee and Zsolt Basti, in the elegant surroundings of The Wilde Iconic Offices at Merrion Square, Dublin, which houses works from some of Ireland’s best-loved artists.

Jessica and Gary Heffernan from Blanchardstown, Co. Dublin, were also in attendance at the Incognito launch, together with their son Aaron (age 5), who receives in-home nursing care from Jack and Jill, and his big sister Megan (age 9). Aaron is one of 405 children currently under the care of Jack and Jill in communities across Ireland. The family were accompanied at the launch by Jack and Jill Liaison Nurse Manager, Saundra Nolan.

Fashion Designer Don O'Neill

Other superstars who have submitted original artworks for Incognito 2023 include rock legend Ronnie Wood, Westlife’s Mark Feehily, singer Brian Kennedy, fashion designers Don O’Neill and Paul & William Costelloe, folk singer Mary Black, actress Norma Sheahan, and ‘The Voice’ Eimear Quinn.

Among the established artists taking part this year are Mo Kelly, Maser, Una Sealy RHA, Sylvia Parkinson Brown, Abigail O’Brien, Peter Curling, Fergus Martin and Martin Gale.

Now in its seventh year, Incognito has raised over €860,000 to date to support Jack and Jill families, equating to 51,025 hours of in-home nursing care and respite support. Jack and Jill is hoping that funds generated in 2023 will bring the total amount raised through this impactful art initiative to an incredible €1 million.

With artists participating from both home and abroad, including from the United Kingdom, Europe, the USA, Australia and New Zealand, each artwork is an original and priced at just €65, no matter who the artist is.

Art is ME!

Fashion designer and artist, Helen Steele, has been a veteran of Incognito for five years now. For Helen, who has ADHD, art and doodling were her way of navigating successfully through school as a child:

“Jack and Jill, and the work that it does is a cause so close, I think, to every parent’s heart. Our family had a meningitis scare when my youngest was three weeks’ old, and my middle child was in intensive care for a few days after she was born. Thankfully everything worked out for both of them, but they remind me of how lucky I am to have children who are healthy.

“As for where did my love of art spring from, well it’s something that’s always been part of me. Simply put, art is ME. I have ADHD and drawing as a kid was an amazing way of getting me to concentrate. In fact, my mum used to give me colouring pencils the whole way through junior school, so I didn’t get into trouble! I think the art world has endured an element of snobbery and over-intellectualism that is destructive to the essence of art. Art is in the eye of the beholder and taste is something very personal. It's really important that art should be accessible to everyone and Incognito is a super way of doing that.”

Jessica Heffernan, mum to Aaron (age 5) from Blanchardstown, who is supported by Jack and Jill, commented:

“They say it takes a village to raise a child and, in our case, a whole community of care has wrapped around Aaron and our family. Aaron had an extreme hypoxic episode due to a lack of oxygen to his brain at birth and, as a result, was having seizures. His prognosis was very poor. But he is a determined little fighter and, despite all the odds stacked against him, we got to bring him home and, almost six years later, and with the support of Jack and Jill, he is thriving. I am so proud of all he has achieved. We are delighted to support the Incognito art campaign for Jack and Jill and want to say thank you to all of the fabulous artists who have given their talent and time to support families like ours.”

Paul Costelloe

Art4Care

Lucinda Hall has been the curator of Incognito since 2017. So, what are the most popular artworks?

“While there is much about Incognito for which I am sworn to secrecy, I can reveal that artworks featuring farm animals are among the most sought-after. Cows are always hugely popular, followed by pigs, hens and even goats! Of course, there’s something to suit everyone’s taste and, every year, thankfully, has been a sell-out success. I can honestly say that the standard this year is the best I’ve seen since I started working on Incognito and our artists really have gone the extra mile. I do think that if people have ever been intrigued by art, but felt a little out of their comfort zone, at €65 an artwork, Incognito is the perfect way to get a collection started. Whether by a renowned artist, or an up-and-coming talent, one thing’s for sure, you’ll have selected a piece that you’ve already fallen in love with.”

For Carmel Doyle, CEO of the Jack and Jill Children’s Foundation, Incognito is so much more than the price of the art itself – it’s the difference it makes to people’s lives:

“Incognito is a such a colourful initiative and is hugely loved by a loyal fan base that has been built up over the past seven years. For me, Incognito taps into the talent and generosity of a wonderful community of artists willing to turn their art into a currency for care. Each work of art purchased is valuable, not only in its own right, but also for the hours of in-home nursing it funds for children with highly complex and life-limiting medical conditions. It is great to see so many artists rallying to support local Jack and Jill families and demonstrating what real community spirit means.”

Zara McDermott has been opening up about societal pressures to get engaged.

The former Love Island star is currently in a relationship with Made In Chelsea favourite Sam Thompson.

The pair frequently are the subject of engagement rumours in the media, after dating for the past four years and moving in together.

However, the 26-year-old has now insisted that the speculations about her relationship do not bother her.

In a recent interview with The Mirror, Zara decided to open up about her partnership with 30-year-old Sam.

"We have a very normal relationship, we just make funny videos and that's our thing we do for fun,” she detailed.

Zara then went on to explain how her Love Island experience in 2018 changed her outlook on relationships.

"I think we've been together too long now to feel any kind of pressure, I was thinking back to my relationships before Love Island, it's very different,” she recalled.

"Everything is private, nobody knows anything about what you're doing and all of a sudden, it's this weird paradox life where everything is online all the time but we both really enjoy it. So for us, there's no pressure at all,” she continued.

Zara then went on to give an insightful answer about how she hopes that attitudes towards women have changed in recent decades.

"I personally think in the media, a lot of the time women are asked these questions because of traditional values and expectations of women," she noted. "I think nowadays, we're in the 21st century, we can be more than a wife and more than a mother.”

Lastly, Zara revealed that she has learned to live with the public’s expectations of her. "We don't live in a world where we need to be traditional anymore, I wouldn't say I get fed up with it but I understand it,” she admitted.

"I just think that hopefully with the work that I'm doing, I'm building a bigger narrative, of what I want my life to be and how I want it to go, rather than making it about traditional expectations,” she added.

Well done to Zara for promoting girl power!

The star’s must-have makeup products include some beloved Rimmel favourites. Maya says: “When it comes to my eyes, the Thrill Seeker Mascara is my go-to product, I love bold volume and the eye-opening effect – a couple of coats make my lashes look really thick and long, but never clumpy. My absolute go-to product has to be the Scandaleyes Exaggerate Liquid Eyeliner, I always do my eyeliner myself – no matter who’s doing my makeup, so I love that it’s got the sharp point to make my liner precise and lasts all day too! I always think that lipstick is essential for a high-glam look and I’m a big fan of Lasting Finish Lipstick and Lip Liner. I usually go for a shade that’s similar to my lip colour and pair with a liner to create a really defined shape, but when you want to make a statement, you can’t beat a dramatic red.”

Scarlett Moffatt has been spilling the details about all things pregnancy!

The former Gogglebox star announced last month that she is expecting her first child, a baby boy, with her boyfriend Scott Dobinson.

Since sharing her joyful news, Scarlett hasn’t shared many details about her pregnancy journey so far.

However, the 32-year-old has now treated her 2.3M Instagram followers to a long-overdue catchup!

Taking to her stories earlier today, Scarlett began her address by thanking her fans for their kind messages.

“I’ve had so many lovely messages off of you, asking me how my pregnancy has been, and how it’s going now, so I just thought I would check in on everyone,” she stated.

The expectant mum went on to share that she has been enjoying pregnant life so far, to her surprise. “I feel really grateful because I know everyone doesn’t have the same experiences,” she explained.

“Every morning I’m just so excited, and I talk to my little boy and so does Scott,” she continued. “It already feels like we’ve got a baby in the house!”

Scarlett then revealed that she had made a list of the most popular questions she had been asked in recent weeks.

In response to queries about her pregnancy cravings, the former I’m A Celebrity winner exclaimed that she loved fruit “so much” during her first trimester.

“It would be 3am and I would just randomly get up to eat a honeydew melon, which obviously I would never have done that pre-pregnancy,” Scarlett laughed.

Scarlett then informed her followers that herself and Scott didn’t start buying any baby items until 20 weeks, as they discovered her pregnancy very early. “We actually found out when I was 5 days pregnant,” she giggled.

Lastly, Scarlett shared a relatable story about her pregnancy pet peeve. “The negative, I would say, is that people just want to tell you their childbirth horror stories, and I just think we shouldn’t do that,” she insisted.

“As a pregnant person, you do a lot of research anyway into things that can happen. Let’s just leave all of the gorey details out,” she teased.

We can’t wait to hear more about Scarlett’s incoming little one!

Posting a collection of gorgeous photos of herself cradling her blossoming baby bump to her 1.5M Instagram followers, Laura joked that she thought she had an upset stomach before she realised it was actually her baby moving for the first time that she was feeling.

However, Ferne then came to a dramatic conclusion. “But she said to me 'no you definitely did [when pregnant with Sunday]' which leads me to think we're having a girl," she exclaimed.

Lorri subsequently joked that that was a scary thought for him! "A house full of women, I can't bloody wait,” he teased.

Ferne and Lorri initially confirmed the news of their pregnancy earlier this month. Rumours about the couple’s first child together had been rife for weeks prior to their announcement.

“We are having a baby @lozzahaines,” Ferne gushed in her caption at the time. “We have been bursting at the seams with happiness & so excited to officially share our lovely news with you.”

During their first pregnancy interview with OK!, Ferne shared that she and Lorri had decided not to find out the gender of their child before she gives birth. However, the reality star did disclose that she would be delighted if Sunday had a sister.

“I would love a girl, just because I’ve got my girl’s name and I feel like a girl mum because I’ve got Sunday," Ferne detailed.

"I can only see myself with girls,” she added.

Now, speaking to Brides, Bonnie reflected on the day and shared the details on her stunning 100-year-old wedding gown.

Speaking about why they chose the farm setting for their wedding and the general vision they had for their big day, the actress explained, “We admire everything that The Ecology Center stands for. We loved the idea of being surrounded by bountiful growing nourishing plants as we said ‘we do’”.

As the farm is owned by two friends of the couple, Bonnie admitted it felt “so intimate and easy to organise”.

“Our vision was to make it both a celebration of love and community. We wanted it to be intimate [and] people to feel present and relaxed”.

“Visually, we wanted it to express the vibrant colours of California. It was important to reflect our love for the environment and use sustainable materials instead of any single-use packaging, lean into our creativity and make things ourselves, and source everything as locally and seasonally as possible”.

Bonnie also revealed the couple opted to write love letters to each other while at the altar rather than vows.

“We always knew we would as it felt more personable and an opportunity to really share our love for one another with all our family and friends. We wrote them like love letters to each other rather than traditional vows”.

When describing her beautiful vintage wedding dress, the 32-year-old revealed, “I wanted it to feel balanced, as our wedding was outside and our day started in full sun and transitioned into night. It was so important to feel myself”.

“I knew I wanted to wear a vintage dress. There are so many beautiful dresses already out in the world full of character and story”.

“It only took two visits to the salon and I found my dress. It was surreal at first actually making the official decision, but it felt so right and easy!”.

“The dress didn’t have the original underdress with it as it had likely perished – it being 100 years old! So when I was first trying it on, it was completely see-through. It was quite funny having to imagine the underdress we would end up making for it”.

Wright finished off her wedding look with Prada shoes she already owned in her wardrobe because they “felt perfect as the straps were shaped like branches and leaves”.

Speaking on her Instagram Stories, the 28-year-old said, “A polite request, please refrain from sending me your horror stories of being induced, or your opinions on why me being induced is wrong for my baby”.

“I appreciate you may mean well, but it is not helpful. As a first time mum, you will know the anxiety I am already feeling”.

“The last thing I need to hear is horrible experiences or being mum shamed”.

The former reality TV star went on to thank fans for the positive comments she’s been getting. “Thank you for all the lovely messages I’ve received, they far outweigh the negative ones”.
