New research has discovered that the Irish population is increasingly turning towards a sustainable diet.
The study, which was conducted by Coyne Research on behalf of the National Dairy Council, has found that 84% of people have recently made one or more changes towards eating a more sustainable diet.
Those who took part in the study were also asked about their main factors when it comes to eating more sustainably. The affordability of food, the nutritional values of products, and the importance of locally produced foods were the top three considerations listed by participants.
Out of the 1,000 people who got involved in the questionnaire, 50% of the respondents revealed that they are making a conscious effort to stop food waste in their homes, by planning their meals in advance.
However, one of the most fascinating findings from the report was that a large percentage of the public are confused about what a ‘plant-based diet’ means. Almost half of those surveyed believe that it is a term used to describe a vegetarian or vegan diet. Shockingly, 15% of people admitted that they did not know what it meant at all.
Dr Aifric O’Sullivan Assistant Professor at UCD School of Agriculture and Food Science noted the significance of this result. “Given it’s a term that is used frequently in relation to eating sustainably, this is an important finding,” Dr O’Sullivan said.
“We know that Irish diets are not sustainable from both an environmental and health perspective so any confusion is a barrier and we need to be clearer about what we need people to do to eat more sustainably,” she added.
Dietitian Sarah Keogh went on to praise the positive factors of the survey as “really encouraging”. “As food prices continue to soar, it’s not surprising that choosing foods that are affordable and nutritious are top of mind and are important considerations as we develop guidance on eating more sustainably too," she explained.
"We need to make eating sustainably achievable for as many people as possible,” she concluded.
Kiran Rahim, a doctor specialising in baby, child, adolescent and women’s health shares the most ridiculous period myths she has heard and warning signs you need to know as endometriosis month comes to a close.
Kiran spoke on behalf of Active Iron, about the most ridiculous period myths she has heard during her extensive medical career, period symptoms that should never be ignored, and other pressing topics related to women’s health including solutions to your biggest period problems.
Dr. Kiran Rahim
According to Dr Rahim, these are the period symptoms that women should never ignore:
Painful period poops:
No one really talks about period poops. So if you are having very painful period poops, it's really important you discuss that with the doctor because it can be a sign of something else going on, like endometriosis for example.
Heavy bleeding:
Many women think that having heavy periods where they flood their tampons or their towels or they leak through or pass large clots is normal, but it isn't. If you are having very heavy periods, it's really important you discuss it with the doctor.
Bleeding between periods:
This is almost never normal and should be seen by a healthcare professional as soon as possible.
Symptoms such as fever, feeling nauseous or severe tummy pain should not be ignored. These can be a sign of an untreated pelvic infection or a sign of pelvic inflammatory disease.
Changes in your period:
This needs to be investigated because it can be a sign of polycystic ovarian syndrome, thyroid issues or endometriosis.
Breast tenderness:
A lot of women, particularly young women, aren't used to examining their breasts. There are normal breast changes that happen when you're on your period and throughout the cycle. So if you get to know your breasts through your cycle, you can know what's normal and what isn't for them. Any sort of pain or lumps or tenderness outside of your norm should be discussed. There is no shame in any period symptoms and seeking help is key.
Endometriosis Awareness Month reminds us that we are not alone
How much blood do women actually lose on their periods?
Women think they use litres and litres of blood. But actually, most women lose somewhere between 2 to 5 tablespoons in their cycle, which is on average around 30 to 50 mls of blood. Depending on the length of your cycle, you may be on the lower end of that or on the higher end. Anything above this is abnormal. So if you are flooding every day for days on end and if you're having to go through multiple period products, then it's really important that you have a chat with your doctor.
What age is most important for women to take iron supplements?
Your need for iron supplementation changes throughout your life. Iron supplementation is important for any woman that is menstruating at any age. It's really important that women take this because menstruation is one of the leading causes of low iron levels in the world. It's important women know how that can affect them and how it can make them feel.
Women that are breastfeeding should consider taking an iron supplement, there's an increased demand on your body when you're breastfeeding. During the perimenopausal phase your periods can become quite irregular and heavy which can lead to low iron levels.
Gentle and clinically proven iron supplements such as Active Iron are a good solution during this time.
How does low iron affect women?
Menstruation is the leading cause for low iron in the world. Iron is an essential nutrient, and it's responsible for a whole host of bodily functions. Maintaining our energy levels, supporting our mental health, and our mood, but also it also supports a lot of the intrinsic processes. So when you have low iron or you don't have enough iron you can be very fatigued, have a lot of brain fog, your mood can be affected, and you can have low energy levels.
And if you're someone who is perimenopausal or having lots of heavy periods, then these symptoms are just that much worse and they don't need to be. Women think that we have to put up with a number of things because that's accepted as a societal norm.
Does every woman need to take iron? And how much iron should they be taking?
Iron is an essential nutrient, and it's responsible for lots of important functions. And on average, women need up to 18mg of iron per day if they are having regular periods. This includes women who are menstruating or perimenopausal. Supplementation, for the most part, is a safe and effective way to replace lost iron.
The issue with conventional iron treatment is that they often come with undesirable side effects. A lot of women complain of heartburn, constipation, and nausea. This is why I love working with Active Iron. Active Iron has really helped me when I was pregnant and struggling with my iron levels and even now. It helps avoid side effects and is so much gentler on our gut. Apart from supplementation, it's really important that you think about having a balanced diet as well, because as we know, diet is also key.
And what are some of the most ridiculous period myths you've heard?
In the South Asian community growing up, I heard a lot, and this makes things really difficult for women when they're on their period. So I guess the worst one for me was that you were told you couldn't wash your hair. It was the most ridiculous one I've seen with absolutely no sense in it. When we were growing up, we were also told that we couldn't swim during our periods because if we went swimming, the chlorine would go inside us and enter the womb and cause lots of infections or again, infertility.
More modern ones are myths like you shouldn't or should exercise during your period – this is not a real thing. The one that I find really difficult is that periods are all shameful and they aren't a normal biological process. The more we normalise them and the more we treat them as such, it empowers young girls and women to come in, talk about their menstrual health, fight some of that stigma, and make women's health better.
You talk about the period myths you heard growing up in the south Asian community, is there anything you would suggest to help combat these myths and help women in general?
Yes, I do. I think the government needs to start speaking to actual women. The difficulty is that there are so many policies made for women by men that don't have an idea of what women go through, particularly on their period. We need a wider practice in thinking about how we in the UK and Ireland can end period poverty. For example, how we can improve women's wellness, women's education around their periods, and indeed around women's health. A lot of things are brushed under the carpet or noted as a ‘taboo topic’ and there's a lot of stigma attached to it. We need to fight against that stigma.
There are particular communities that sometimes are described as being ‘hard to reach’. Usually, black or brown ethnic minority communities and these communities have a lot of stigma and social taboos associated with their parents. But it's really important that women from these communities talk about their health with someone that they trust because there is a lot of misinformation and bad practices that are instilled within communities as being the norm for women's health. I think it's really important that we start to move on areas and start discussing women's health globally.
Do you think that the UK and Ireland do enough for women in regard to general period supports?
No is the short answer. The UK and Ireland don’t do enough for women's health, full stop, and that's certainly been the case for the decade.
Periods are still seen as a shameful taboo thing that shouldn't be talked about, particularly in the workplace. But that needs to change. Our leaders really need to think about things like compassionate leave and understand that good menstrual health is an essential component of female wellbeing. Women bring so much to the workplace, employers need to be flexible. They need to incorporate women's wellness into their policies. Workplaces need to consider giving women dignity during that period so they're not having to hide in toilets crying because they're having awful, painful period cramps or they're not having to run away because they've had a leak or they flooded. It's not a taboo topic. It's a normal biological process and we should treat it as such.

With permission from David Mamet (Glengarry Glen Ross, Hannibal), Andy Crook directs this exciting, all new version of the classic satire Speed The Plow.
This re-imagining of David Mamet’s 1980s hit play turns the dynamic on its head as the genders of the protagonists are reversed. Set in Hollywood where power is everything and morals are a commodity to be bought and sold, this production will examine the hierarchy from an alternative perspective. With two females as the movie executives and a younger male, the plot is given an entirely different context.
Speed The Plow has been performed by such luminaries as William H Macy, Jeff Goldblum, Joe Mantegna, Elizabeth Moss, Lindsay Lohan and is notable for marking Madonna’s stage debut.
What the Critics said of previous productions of the Tony nominated play Speed The Plow
“When the curtain falls on this short and unsparing study of sharks in the shallows of the movie industry, it’s as if you had stepped off a world-class roller coaster.”
Ben Brantley – New York Times
"When Hollywood meets Broadway, sparks fly and Tinseltown's incinerated – especially if the flamethrower is David Mamet. So it is with "Speed-the-Plow."
Clive Barnes – New York Post
“Mamet's scintillating dialogue and black humour render it just about timeless…”

Gwyneth Paltrow has been cleared of all fault and found not liable in a court case against a 76-year-old man who claimed the actress crashed into him while skiing.
Retired optometrist Terry Sanderson claimed Paltrow crashed into him while they were both skiing in Utah in 2016, and was suing her for $300,000.
On the contrary, Gwyneth claimed Sanderson had crashed into her, causing her to ‘lose half a day of skiing’, and countersued him for $1.

The trial lasted for over a week and on Thursday, jurors deliberated for just over two hours before they reached the final decision that Gwyneth was not at fault.
Gwyneth was awarded $1, as per her request as a symbolic sum, for damages plus her legal fees.
At the final moments of the trial, jurors agreed that Sanderson was “100% at fault” and “had caused her harm”.
As Paltrow left the courtroom, she walked up to Terry and whispered, “I wish you well”. He responded, “Thank you dear”.

The GOOP CEO released a statement on her Instagram Stories to her 8.3M followers after the trial was over.
It reads, “I felt that acquiescing to a false claim compromised my integrity. I am pleased with the outcome and I appreciate all of the hard work of Judge Holmberg and the jury, and thank them for their thoughtfulness in handling this case”.
The Iron Man star’s lawyer shared a statement to reporters outside the courthouse and said, “Gwyneth has a history of advocating for what she believes in".
"This situation was no different and she will continue to stand up for what is right”.

Andre has taken to Instagram to share the last photo the couple ever took together and thanked the public for their messages of support after Paul’s heartbreaking death.
In the picture, Paul and Andre are smiling together while sitting side-by-side on a boat with a beautiful view of the sea behind them.
Portasio captioned the post, “In time I hope to write to everyone individually and thank you for all posts, messages, phone calls, emails, cards and flowers of support”.
“I much appreciate you all taking the time to reach out. I’m so very touched and I’m sure Paul would be too!”.
He added, “Browsing for a picture I found the last picture we ever took together. Unbeknownst to us back in January this would be our last ever holiday together”.
Many fans of Paul’s headed to the comments to share their condolences with Andre again and share the love they had for him.

Disha Bose is the author of ‘Dirty Laundry’ – a deliciously scandalous story about the dark side of suburbia.
Ciara, Lauren and Mishti are three mothers, friends, wives. But, underneath the perfectly managed routines of their lives, they are not the women you expect – and neither are the secrets they keep. We all have our dirty laundry to air, but when their carefully curated world is threatened, the devastation goes beyond scandal – it leads to murder . . .
Available in shops & online from 30th March
Thoroughly entertaining and suspenseful, Dirty Laundry tackles the impossibility of who we fall in love with and the innate urge to create better versions of ourselves in our children.
In advance of the pubication of Dirty Laundry, we sat down with Disha to catch up on all things motherhood, mum's life and her writing journey.
Disha Bose
What was your experience with motherhood in the pandemic – especially without family / friends around?
It was a crazy ride. Our daughter was just under a year when we went into our first Lockdown, right when she was learning to walk and enjoy the outdoors. My husband was still going to work, which meant I was stuck alone at home for the day. It was isolating, exasperating, and filled me with self-doubt. It was the time when I needed my family and friends the most, and we were cutoff from everyone. Alone with my thoughts and a frustrated baby, I didn’t know how to keep her happy and entertained. I was completely against screen-time for infants, but I remember sitting her down in front of the TV one afternoon and thinking I’ve reached my breaking point.
You lived in Calcutta, London and Dublin before moving to the country in Cork – how do you find the change of pace?
I will admit that it took some getting used to. The concept of having to drive to the nearest shop was something I thought I’d never make peace with. However, I have completely fallen in love with this lifestyle now. I’ve always been a bit of a recluse, so living outside the city suits me just fine. I enjoy the space and quiet, and especially the glorious Irish countryside views. Sometimes I miss the sound of traffic; which used to be a consistent background noise, but I pop on an ambient-sound playlist on Spotify and all is well again.
When did you start writing?
I didn’t start writing seriously until about eight years ago, but I was always a dreamer. I used to entertain my family and friends with detailed stories as a child. I remember making up stories and relating them to my friends like they were real films I’d watched, and most of the time they believed me. So, I think I was a storyteller much before I was a writer.
What was your inspiration for the characters?
When we were in Lockdown, I turned to the internet for parenting advice and support. I was following a lot of influencers on social media and joined parenting groups. I didn’t realise I was also taking mental notes while I scrolled. When I eventually began writing Dirty Laundry, I had a very clear idea of the characters and most of them were based on the interactions and patterns I had observed online.
Ciara is an Irish lifestyle and parenting influencer – is she based on anyone in particular?
Neither Ciara nor any of the other characters in the book are based on anyone in particular. They’re amalgamations of a variety of different people – from popular influencers to anonymous commentators. And of course, their backgrounds and the choices they make are fictionalised for the story.
What are your views on social media influencers?
I feel that they are an essential part of our global community, just like other celebrities we see in media. They provide us with information and entertainment. However, it is also our responsibility, as consumers, to make ourselves aware of the possibility of misinformation, and to separate social media from real life. These days, as soon as I notice an element of the internet affecting my mental health, I eliminate it from my life. It hasn’t been easy, and I’ve had to train myself to recognise it.
Tell us about your experience of getting published?
It has been a surreal experience. I spent close to six years trying to complete a novel, but I always ended up abandoning every story I was writing. Then, just around the time the Lockdowns were being lifted, the idea for Dirty Laundry came to me, almost like a dream. I knew I had to write it down before I abandoned this too. I wrote the book in eight weeks; something I didn’t think I was capable of doing. Before I could talk myself out of it, I sent the manuscript to a few agents in Ireland and the UK, and within days I landed my dream literary agent. Three days later, I had two publishing deals with my dream publisher. I’m still pinching myself.
What has been the most exciting moment so far?
So far, the most exciting moment has been to open a package and find the finished copy of my book in my hands. However, I’m looking forward to the day I’ll walk up to a bookshop and see Dirty Laundry in its window. I’ve spent my whole life waiting for that moment.
‘Dirty Laundry’ by Disha Bose is published by Viking and is available in shops and online from 30th March.
