Yearly Archives: 2018

Gin and tonic has become the go-to drink for practically half the country. The popular beverage has exploded in popularity over the past few years, and we’re not surprised.

As much as we love a G&T, we have to admit that we feel quite overwhelmed when we go to order one at the bar. What gin should I ask for? What type of tonic am I in the mood for? Will they add fruit? Or glitter?

We are spoiled for choice these days, but picking the perfect drink is tricky. Luckily, the Irish Gin and Tonic Fest is here to help.

They have just released Ireland’s best gin and tonic, which is bound to make your nights out that little bit easier.

This year’s festival ran across the 32 counties of Ireland with a total of 132 venues taking part and 16 GIN events throughout the country.

The 2018 edition featured 26 Irish gins that hail from every province in Ireland and are made with a huge variety of both farmed and wild Irish ingredients.

The festival asked the public to vote for their favorite #IrishGnT on Twitter and Instagram or by posting on the Great Irish Beverages Facebook page, and the results are in.

Ireland’s best gin & tonic in 2018 is…

Russell's Saloon & Gin Emporium, Dundalk, Co. Louth.

Bar manager of Russell’s, Jean McGuinness was thrilled with the result: “Everybody is so curious about Irish gin these days and they were excited to meet the distiller of our festival gin.”

“Our choice of using fresh pear with the blueberries went down a storm with our customers as they said the garnish really brought out the fruit in the gin and the bitterness in the Fever Tree tonic."

We love the sound of Russell’s pear and blueberry gin. We’ll certainly have to visit them this summer!

Ireland’s relationship with lotteries has been a long one. Before the National Lottery launched in 1987, there was the Irish Sweepstake, involving a drum full of tickets that corresponded to racehorses. Jackpot, Telly Bingo and Winning Streak were some of the features introduced by the National Lottery, but it is the success stories that give it all value.

The Journal names three stores in Ireland with the most sales of winning tickets. By 2017, Dublin’s GPO gave away 14 such tickets, their total giveaway amounting to over €15 million. Ardkeen Superstores’ eight tickets beat that with a worth of €19.5 million. Lucky shops, such as O’Neill’s Newsagent in Bridgend, enjoy flocks of customers from far and wide coming for that extra chance at a big win.

A New World

But the lotto landscape has changed. Digital platforms and developing technologies continually provide more and luckier opportunities. A growth of 160% has been declared by Juniper Research, identifying mobile devices as the driving force behind an estimated increase in wagers on online lotteries to $76 billion by 2022. The 317 million digital lottery users of 2018 are said to reach 624 million in the next four years. Now, how does this affect Ireland?

In addition to local lottos, players have access to a range of lotteries across the globe. This is thanks to providers putting down roots in more and more places, including Ireland. Lottoland.ie is one of many websites offering access to international prizes, from the US to Poland to Australia, by betting on the outcome of the draws.

International Lotteries

Best known are the jackpots of the PowerBall and MegaMillions in the US, $1.6 billion being the biggest giveaway in the PowerBall’s record, according to Lottoland. Its competitor is not too far behind, with a jackpot of $656 million. Not a bad place to try your Irish luck.

EuroMillions and EuroJackpot are the equivalent big lotteries in Europe, played across several countries. The first guarantees in the UK £1 million to at least two players, while the latter rivals these chances, but with smaller prizes. No matter where you are, these opportunities are open to everyone with a computer or mobile.

Even the El Gordo is available, the Spanish Christmas Lottery dubbed the ‘Fat One’, once restricted to its country of origin. Now, its €2.3 billion welcomes the rest of the world through online providers. There is a Bitcoin Lotto too, which Fortune expects will outmanoeuvre the PowerBall and MegaMillions both. By matching six numbers, players can win a jackpot of at least 1000 BTC, which can be claimed as is or in a cash denomination.

Essentially, the digital age is thinning the lottery borders and allowing all to take a punt on massive jackpots that used to be out of reach. A new wardrobe, a car, a house – these things are no longer untouchable dreams, especially, for the Irish, blessed with some reportedly lucky neighbourhoods in Dublin, Carlow, Laois and elsewhere. So cross your fingers around your horseshoe and try to catch Lady Luck’s smile.

We have to admit we were incredibly jealous of everyone who was lucky enough to attend a garden party held in honour of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

The event took place in the residency of the British Ambassador in Dublin on Tuesday evening.

A post shared by Meghan Markle (@mrsmeghanmarkle) on

An array of well-known Irish faces attended the lavish celebration, from sports stars to activists and from actresses to musicians.

Bressie, Louise McSharry, Una Mullally, Lucy Kennedy, Sinead Burke and Ruby Walsh were amongst some of the most notable guests.

One of our favourite couples were also invited to the party, and it’s safe to say they were thrilled to be there.

Rugby star Brian O’ Driscoll and actress Amy Huberman gushed about the event on their social media accounts, saying it was great to meet the Duke and Duchess of Sussex during their first official royal visit.

Taking to Twitter, Amy shared a hilarious photo of her greeting Prince Harry, and she certainly looked shell-shocked, but wouldn’t we all.

There’s no doubt that we’d be completely starstruck if we were lucky enough to meet the dashing prince.

A post shared by Amy Huberman (@amy_huberman) on

The Striking Out star joked about the snap, which certainly blew her cool image, but could you really remain calm around royalty?

“Ugh. So this photo surfacing has basically dispelled my “Ah yeah, you know, I just played it very cool, very casual, you know that kind of way?!” story,” she wrote.

Fear not, Amy! We would have reacted in the exact same way.

Yep, it's 1994 again because we are talking all things The Babysitters Club.

If you were born before 2000, these books should have been a staple of that horribly ''wtf?'' time in your life aged 11 – 14.

Every summer for those formative years, I could be found curled up literally anywhere, enveloped in the adventures of Kristy, Ann-Marie and co.

I felt I knew those tweenage girls from Connecticut for real so it's safe to say this news is pretty f*cking exciting.

A retro box set of all of the OG novels is due to be released.

According to BustleThe Baby-Sitters Club retro set will include six original BSC books, which will be: Kristy's Great Idea, Claudia and the Phantom Phone Calls, The Truth About Stacey, Mary Anne Saves the Day, Dawn and the Impossible Three, and Kristy's Big Day.

Twelve-year-old me is screaming RN.

Each book will have its gorgeous original illustrated cover, plus they will come inside of a cute retro tin.

It definitely looks like this blast of 1980's/1990's nostalgia is here to stay as Hollywood Reporter recently revealed that there may be a brand new TV adaptation of the series on the way.

''The adaptation comes from Walden Media and Michael De Luca, which will be producing and shopping the modernized version as half-hour episodes,'' it was reported.

There was a TV show from Scholastic in the 1990's, as well as a 1995 movie starring Rachel Leigh Cook and Larisa Oleynik.

''As lifelong fans of The Baby-Sitters Club and its enduring messages of entrepreneurialism, empowerment, diversity and most importantly, female friendships, we couldn't’t be more thrilled to work on this special project with Rachel and Lucia,” says Naia Cucukov, Walden Media’s senior vp development and production.

“We feel incredibly honoured that Ann M. Martin has allowed us the chance to introduce the BSC to a new generation of future thought leaders and influencers.”

Now the real question is…is it too early to add that vintage tin of books to my Christmas wish list?

Kylie Jenner took to Instagram to announce that she will be gracing the cover of Forbes Magazine, for their issue on female billionaires.

Kylie's still hyaluronically amplified pout is further pronounced by a coating of one of her famous Kylie Lip Kits – the innovation which got her on the cover in the first place.

Described as the youngest self-made billionaire in history, it's the cool $900 million she has made from her company Kylie Cosmetics that earned her the recognition of Forbes.

A post shared by Kylie (@kyliejenner) on

'Wow. i can’t believe I’m posting my very own @forbes cover. thank you for this article and the recognition,' she wrote under the post.

'I’m so blessed to do what i love everyday. I couldn’t have dreamt this up!'

However, not everyone agrees with Kylie being described as 'self-made'

While most recognise the huge achievements she has made with Kylie Cosmetics, many are pointing out that by hailing from the Kardashian-Jenner clan, it's difficult to associate her with being 'self-made.'

With the dictionary defining self-made as 'having become successful or rich by one's own efforts,' and it conjures up a came-from-nothing image of a person who started at the bottom and rose through the ranks through hard work and innovation.

Having come from a collective family net worth of $400 million dollars without Kylie's fortune added, and with the astronomical fame, could Kylie be considered 'self-made?'

Nev Schulman, the main man of MTV's hit programme Catfish: The TV show, is trying to move on after he was wrongly accused of sexual misconduct.

Pending investigations halted production of the TV show in June, after a woman who previously starred in the show accused the host of making inappropriate and sexual comments to her whilst filming.

MTV has now said those claims were not "credible and are without merit".

A post shared by Nev Schulman (@nevschulman) on

Nev spoke to PEOPLE about how he's trying to get on with life after the ordeal.

“I’m doing much better now…It was a really difficult time for me, as much for my wife and my family. It was tough.”

The presenter continued to explain how he strives to live an honest, good life which means taking responsibility for his actions.

A post shared by Nev Schulman (@nevschulman) on

“I’ve lived a number of different lives in my 33 years. I’ve experienced different things, I’ve been in different social circles and I’ve made mistakes. I’ve been very honest about those and I’ve been accountable, I’ve apologised and done everything I could to make right where I may have wronged.

I’ve been judged for those mistakes — publicly and privately. That’s tough and doesn’t feel good but it’s important and something I’ve made part of my life,” he explained.

A post shared by Nev Schulman (@nevschulman) on

During the time the allegations were being looked into, the 33-year-old detailed just how difficult it was, but he always had endless support to help him through.

“To be accused of something that I squarely did not do and to have the harsh judgment that followed and no way to counteract or do something in the moment to correct that was very difficult,” he replies.

“It was frustrating. I just felt so powerless.”

“Luckily I had the amazing support of the fans of the show but also of my colleagues, the crew…Several people who had been on the show actually reached out to me and offered to speak up in my support if necessary. I’m just so thankful and grateful to everyone.”

A post shared by Nev Schulman (@nevschulman) on

In May, Nev denied the allegations of sexual misconduct by a woman he has chosen not to name, but who did appear on the show.

In a statement to PEOPLE, the host said:

“The behaviour described in this video did not happen and I’m fortunate that there are a number of former colleagues who were present during this time period who are willing to speak up with the truth."

“I have always been transparent about my life and would always take responsibility for my actions — but these claims are false.”

Catfish will be returning to our TV screens tonight for a 7th series.

Lazy people, rejoice.

You can now see your doctor and get that refill prescription all from the comfort of your own bed.

McCabes Pharmacy has announced their agreement with VideoDoc, a company who deliver diagnosis and a prescription to patients at home and we're pretty excited about it.

VideoDoc is an online doctor service and each one is registered with the Irish Medical Council and has received remote services training so it's all legit.

They are available for consultations online via the videodoc.ie website or through the videoDoc app.

So, where does McCabes come in all of this?

Basically, if you can't get to the pharmacy to collect your medicine,  videoDoc can send the prescription to McCabes Pharmacy who in turn will deliver the medication to the individual’s location of choice.

They offer the same day delivery in Dublin and a next day delivery service for anywhere else in Ireland.

Amazing, right?

“Our delivery service ensures that  patients never run out of much needed medication. videoDoc who provide online doctor consultations extend healthcare even further to those who might have mobility or scheduling issues,” said Cormac Loughnane, Superintendent Pharmacist of McCabes Pharmacy.

Mary O’Brien, Co-Founder and CEO of videoDoc, has said, ''I believe this is an example of how developments in technology can give people precious time back in their day.''

Social media is all here for it, with users tweeting, ''When video doc saves your life when you get tonsillitis at USI Congress'' and ''Great example of how tech can be leveraged to help the healthcare sector and specifically mental health.''

videoDoc is available seven days a week from 8am to 10am, to patients anywhere in Europe.

Plus, it's just 20 quid a visit.

Right, we're off to download that app STAT.

For those who don't follow Offset closely, his name is Kiari Kendrell Cephus, so Kulture had his name bestowed as her middle name – vey cute.

According to the caption, Kulture arrived yesterday, on July 10th.

Cardi spoke out earlier in her pregnancy about the expectation that once women embark on motherhood, they can't have as flourishing a career.

'I hate the certain things people say . . . like 'I feel bad for her. Why is she doing that in the height of her career?' she said in an interview with New York's Hot 97 radio station.

'Why can't I have both? Why do I have to choose a baby or a career? Why do I have to be in my mid-30s to have a baby? What am I doing wrong?'

Poker: the ultimate boys’ club. The green felt table has played host to cigars, brandy and buttoned up suits all too often in stereotype, but you might be surprised to find the modern reality is quite different. Long gone are the days of only Bond and the unscrupulous rich dolling out the dice. Now poker is online. Poker is a circuit, a sport, available on practically everything from your phone to your smart fridge.

And where there’s money, there’s competition. Vanessa Selbst is the best female poker player in the world – statically, at least. She’s the only woman to have ever reached the number one rank under the Global Poker Index. She’s won three World Poker Series brackets. She is, amongst many other things, an undoubted champion with winnings in her pocket. And yet Selbst has touted her own retirement more than once in recent months. Queen of the cards, she just can’t walk away.

A Back and Forth Champion

The new year of 2018 came around with an announcement. Selbst, one of the most prolific names in the entirety of the poker scene, would be retiring to her home in New York with her wife. A graduate of Yale Law School and employee of Bridgewater Associates, her family and external careers would now appear to be taking priority. And yet, just two weeks after the announcement, she would go on to compete once more in a Hard Rock tournament. Selbst was in full-time employment, ‘playing for fun’ in her own words. It was odd, but certainly not against the rules.

Come June and she’d take to prolific tables for a second time since said retirement announcement, competing in World Series of Poker events in and around Las Vegas. Selbst went with the intention of donating any and all profits to charity – the Make the Road charity to be exact, which works to protect and ensure the safety of immigrants in the United States. Whilst she certainly wouldn’t be playing for personal gain, Selbst would still be at the table fighting for her cause, back in her element, back in her natural environment. She had retired, but she certainly hadn’t vanished altogether.

Pictured: Vanessa Selbst cheerful at her winnings. Source: Facebook

And it’s not surprising that this ‘retirement’ has so far been marked by various well-meaning appearances. Poker is a hobby and a passion as much as anything else. Like Fedor Holz before her, also a star in the scene, our titular lady enjoys the game too much to just turn around and walk away indefinitely. Holz himself reportedly retired in 2016, but he too regularly partakes in the cards and chips, often for less philanthropic purposes.

And why not? Poker is a thrill – and the money’s a big part of the attraction.

Her Winnings Total Over $11m

Selbst’s overall career winnings total over $11 million. That makes her the highest-earning woman in the modern game of Texas Hold ‘Em to this date. It also makes her the only player ever to have won the same North American Poker Tour event twice in a row, and an icon for all other women breaking in and onto the scene. Poker might be about luck on a fundamental level, but this is one shemazing lady who can play the odds to the top time and time again. The numbers don’t lie. 21 six-figure pay-outs later and Selbst knows that better than anyone. She’s a woman at the top of the World Series of Poker leaderboards, with three bracelets total. No wonder she keeps coming back for more. The game just keeps getting bigger and better!

And while it’s certainly true that the poker industry has seen immense growth of the years of Selbst’s play, that growth has taken place both on and offline in terms of the game. Vegas might be the most well-known battleground in which the legendary competition takes place, but more recently, mobile gaming has made an appearance. Yep, that’s right. Poker on your phone might just be bigger than poker at an actual table. Gaming is a market worth billions: $108.9 billion in 2017 to be exact, and mobile gaming takes up to a 42% share of that humongous figure. Selbst herself has even gotten involved in times gone by. She was both a coach and executive producer for DeucesCracked, a training website for card amateurs and veterans alike. With so many game types and such easy access, it’s likely that the Texas Hold ‘Em player base will only continue to grow in the future as information and entertainment spread across the globe.

And what does that mean? Well, hopefully, it means more female players like Selbst. Hopefully, it means more competition for the scene, a higher standard of play, higher winnings, and maybe even a successor in the works. Someone that could one day give even Selbst a run for her hard-earned cash, perhaps?

One of Many

Vanessa Selbst is the star of this article – a woman that’s risen to the top despite her competing in a mostly male-dominated industry and game, retired, returned and retired again. But she’s hardly the only lady at the table; there are other serious female poker players out there too, and even more on the above mobile and online platforms playing at a casual level. Take Annette Obrestad, for example.

Pictured: Annette Obrestad at the table with hands on chips. Source: Facebook

Annette is the youngest person to ever win a World Series of Poker bracelet, doing so at just 18 years old. Her career in the game had begun only three years earlier, playing on the web without ever depositing a cent of her own. Obrestad claims she earned her initial bank by winning free entry tournaments, and things only escalated from there. According to Obrestad, she once even played a tournament without a single viewing of her cards (save for a single exception during an all-in). Obrestad believes that paying attention to the other players around you is just as important as your hand itself, and her winnings seem testament to that fact.

Then there’s Kathleen Liebert, a woman that’s made six World Poker Tour finals tables in her career and earnt herself winnings exceeding $6 million. Both a commentator and competitor, she even won the 2005 Poker Royale ‘Battle of the Sexes,’ a callback to the tennis equivalent decades before.

The world of women in poker is not as shallow as it seems, then. Vanessa might be top dog, but there are plenty of others with sizeable earnings and excellent strategy at baying at her now retired heels. And what does the future hold for Selbst? Things remain uncertain. Her charity and casual appearances hint at the possibility of future seats around the table, but they’re in no way guaranteed. Selbst has had a decade-long career full of success. Perhaps, with the exception of charity and entertainment, it’s right to hang up the cards once and for all.

A staple of viral beauty pages across social media, body contouring videos have been pretty popular since Kim Kardashian kicked off the contouring craze.

Hailed as the no-gym-no-diet method to a sculpted physique, I simply have to point out an issue I have with them.

There can be talk about making legs look 'more toned' until the cows come home – but it seems to me that at the end of the day, all of these body contouring makeup tutorials have one end goal: to make the person look thin.

With chest contouring, it's all about making your collarbones more prominent, making them look as if they jut out from your décolletage the way a very slim person's might.

Necks are slimmed, cheekbones drawn on and arms hollowed in a manner fitting realist Florentine fine art painters as they grappled with the technique of perspective in the 1400s.

I'm absolutely not saying that there is anything wrong with a person's shape or weight if they look this way, but the entire body contouring craze is using the makeup innovation as a smokescreen to create more angles on the body – it's perpetuating the socially held notion that thin women are more valuable than fat women.

All the tutorials show (mainly) women adding dark makeup to their inner thighs to carve out a thigh gap – a trend which is embraced by those with weight decreasing oriented eating disorders.

The tutorials also showcase adding highlight to the shin bones and darker makeup to the outer calf – once again making the bones the focus and blending away the flesh that surrounds them.

People have gone so far as to contour their feet and hands, to rid themselves of the appearance of less than model-slim appendages.

A post shared by LiveGlam (@liveglam.co) on

Women are attempting to photoshop themselves slimmer in real life using a multi-shade foundation palette, and I wonder how that impacts people with self esteem issues once they step out of the shower, all their sculpting washed down the drain.

The fact that people are literally attempting to draw on skinniness horrifies me, and maybe that's because I'm lucky enough to have embraced my shape after some long years of hating it.

Thin is not better than fat, fat is not better than thin, and the sooner we embrace body diversity as a society the better – no toe contouring involved.

Many of us are dealing with anxiety on a daily basis.

While it can be overwhelming sometimes, several tools have been proved to help with the condition, such as mindfulness meditation, physical activity or therapy.

Having to deal with this issue herself, Irish author and co-founder of GAFFInteriors.ie Caroline Foran has been vocal on the topic for several years and written two books about it.

Today, the author of The Confidence Kit: Your Bullsh*t-Free Guide to Owning Your Fear took part in the launch the Bio-Kult ‘Survive Summer’ campaign.

“Anxiety is something I’ve really grappled with over the years, and among the many tools I employ to manage it, I really notice a massive difference when I look after myself from the inside out, particularly by prioritising my gut health", Caroline Foran said.

"Working in the media and promoting my books has its challenges for someone who feels fear a lot, but I always listen to my body and take breaks to recuperate when I need them. Owning and understanding my anxiety is really important to me when dealing with anxiety."

For the journalist, anxiety management starts with accepting you have an issue: “Some of my top tips for dealing with anxiety are to work with your anxiety rather than against it, take the time to figure out where it's coming from and address lifestyle factors and also equip your body with what it needs to handle stress as it comes your way”, she said.

Recent studies have shown the link between gut health and brain function, so looking after your gut health should definitely be a part of your plan if dealing with anxiety. Known to promote a healthy gut, probiotic supplements can help by providing relief for symptoms of anxiety, while improving general wellbeing.

During the event, nutritionist Eva Hill-Hamilton also shared her top tips for relieving symptoms of anxiety through your diet.

1.    Avoid sugar, stimulants and additives that aggravate anxiety and disturb sleep.

2.    Swap your coffee/tea for green tea. The antioxidant and L-theanine content in green tea can help to improve mood, while its low caffeine content helps the withdrawal symptoms.

3.    Eat in regular intervals and include protein and essential fats in every meal. The more balanced your blood sugar levels are, the more you can regulate stress hormone production.

4.    Take a multi-strain probiotic that supports the gut-brain axis. Certain strains have been identified to be able to reduce anxiety, such as Bifidobacterium longum, breve, infantis and Lactobacilli plantarum, helveticus and rhamnosus. All these strains are in the Bio-Kult Advanced multi-strain formula, designed by neurologist Dr Natasha Campbell McBride.

5.    Practice relaxation techniques such as controlled breathing, meditation and prayer to quiet a racing mind and reduce stress hormone levels.

6.    Exercise, especially in nature. Amongst its many documented physiological benefits, regular exercise elevates the mood and helps to combat anxiety disorder.

7.    Try herbal remedies to help you cope with stress and sleep problems and reduce anxiety. Lemon balm, passion flower, chamomile, holy basil, and Schisandra are but a few examples. Always check for contraindications if taking any prescription medications.

If you have been suffering from anxiety, we'd love to hear your tips for dealing with it.
