Yearly Archives: 2017

It's been 13 years since the release of Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgandy, and yet there are few among us who don't still regularly quote the Will Ferrell classic.

And proving it's still very much on the public's radar, a plethora of high-profile news anchors last night performed a skit of one of its most memorable scenes.

Unsurprisingly, the internet is absolutely obsessed, with the short clip racking up more than 18,000 likes on Twitter in mere hours.

With Krishnan Guru-Murthy, Jon Snow, Dermot Murnaghan, Sarah-Jane Mee and Patrick Stewart taking centre stage, the parody went off with a serious bang on The Last Leg last night.

Right, that's enough from us. Take a look at this.

A judge in Massachusetts has ruled that a 20-year-old woman was guilty of encouraging her boyfriend to commit suicide in 2014.

Michelle Carter waived her right to a jury which ultimately gave Judge Lawrence Moniz the right to rule as he saw fit given the evidence presented in the case.

It has been established that Carter regularly urged her boyfriend, Conrad Roy, to act on his suicidal thoughts, going so far as to send multiple texts when the latter appeared reluctant to carry out the act.

Acting on Roy's behalf, prosecutors claimed that Carter was desperate for attention and asserted that Roy's death would provide her with the attention she craved.

Further to this, they accused Carter of being on the phone to Roy in the moments before his passing.

However, Carter's defence team insisted that their client had on many previous occasions talked her boyfriend out of taking his own life, and claimed that Carter suffered from her own mental health issues during this time.

Texts messages which were presented in court make for harrowing reading, as the accused urges the deceased to act on his intentions.

"You can't think about it. You just have to do it. You said you were gonna do it. Like I don't get why you aren’t," Carter wrote.

When Roy insisted that he intended to carry out the act, but wasn't ready, he was met with a barrage of criticism from his girlfriend.

"No, you're not, Conrad. Last night was it. You kept pushing it off and you say you'll do it, but you never do," Carter responded.

It's always gonna be that way if you don't take action. You're just making it harder on yourself by pushing it off. You just have to do it. Do you want to do it now?"

Commenting on their late son's girlfriend, Roy's mother said: "I don't believe she has a conscience. I think she needs to be held responsible for her actions 'cause she knew exactly what she was doing and what she said."

Roy poisoned himself with carbon monoxide on July 13 2014.

The case is the first of its kind, but it's believed that Carter could face up to 20 years in prison.

Remember the last time you made a mammoth mistake in work and were forced to cover your face in shame as the rest of the world pointed and laughed?

Yeah, us neither, but that's because we're not the Australian news reporter who unwittingly revealed that they may need to brush up on their knowledge on political relations between the UK and Ireland.

In a tweet which has unsurprisingly gone viral, a reporter for Sky News Australia confirmed that not only did they think Sinn Féin was an actual person, but that he was also a member of the DUP.

Accompanying an image of Gerry Adams was a caption which read: "Democratic Unionist Party's Sinn Fein says he wil oppose any deal with UK Prime Minister Theresa May that undermines a 1998 peace deal."

And Twitter has obviously gone into meltdown.

"I'm a Northern Ireland native journalist and can't find full time paid work, but someone at Sky News Australia thinks Sinn Fein is a person," wrote Twitter user Aoife-Grace Moore.

Responding to that remark, one user joked: "When Sinn Fein hears about this, he will be livid" while another added: "I think it's short for Sinn Feinstein, and he's an old mate of Dee Youpee,"

And yep, the tweet has since been deleted.

We all know music can have a soothing effect, but how many of us automatically reach for it in the height of stressful or anxious period?

Well, according to neurologic music therapist, Elizabeth Nightingale, listening to music during an anxious period can have a profoundly positive physiological impact.

From lowering your blood pressure and slowing your heart rate to reducing stress hormones, the power of music cannot be underestimated.

“Classical music has been found to induce relaxation and increase dopamine, which is a neurotransmitter that helps elevate mood,” Eliazabeth of Chiltern Music Therapy explains.

“But music is subjective, so anything that you find calming will have these physiological benefits and will help to reduce anxiety."

It is, however, important to remember that you need to give your chosen music your complete focus if you want it to have the desired effect.

"If there aren’t any competing stimuli, the music is given the maximum chance to benefit," Elizabeth continues.

This theory has been examined in recent years by Daniel J. Levitin, PhD, who studies the neuroscience of music at McGill University in Montreal

Levitan found that music improves the body's immune system function and reduces stress.

His research which was published in Trends in Cognitive Sciences in 2013 and established that listening to music was also found to be more effective than prescription drugs in reducing anxiety in a patient prior to surgery.

According to emerging reports, an estimated €100,000 worth of damage has been done after a man cut a series of wires on the M50 Northbound toll bridge last night.

It has been confirmed that the individual cut the cables at approximately 9.30pm in a move which ultimately rendered tag-readers useless and therefore allowed motorists to pass through 'toll-free'.

The motorway was shut down while Gardaí negotiated with the man who was subsequently arrested and detained under the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984.

The individual, who was taken to Blanchardstown Garda Station, will appear in court later today.

Speaking to The Independent, a source confirmed that the damage brought about by his actions would 'cause a huge loss of revenue.

"The value of damage to the cameras on the gantry and loss of revenue is huge, estimated to be over €100k."

Speaking to SHEmazing, Gardaí said: "Gardaí at Blanchardstown are investigating an incident of criminal damage which occurred at the gantry of the eflow barrier on the M50 northbound at approximately 9.30pm last night."

"A 48 year old man gained access to the gantry barrier. The M50 was closed for a time to enable Garda negotiators to communicate with this man. After a short period of time the man left the gantry and was subsequently arrested by Gardaí."

It has been reported that a video documenting the act was shared on social media last night.

For those of you who may not know, iconic rapper, Tupac Shakur, and actress, Jada Pinkett Smith, shared an incredibly close relationship in the 90s.

While they never actually made the leap from friendship to romance, Jada has, in the past, stressed that her relationship with the late rapper was incredibly intense.

"The only way I can put it just the higher power just did not want that because I feel as though if Pac and I had any kind of sexual chemistry, we might have killed each other because we were both so passionate and we love deeply," she said.

"It was hard enough just with us being friends. We had a very volatile relationship," Jada added.

Considering the esteem she held Tupac in, it's no surprise the actress might have reservations about All Eyez On Me – the new biopic documenting his life.

Taking to Twitter to share her thoughts on the film starring Demetrius Shipp Jr and Kat Graham, Jada admitted she found the viewing distressing.

"Forgive me… my relationship to Pac is too precious to me for the scenes in All Eyez On Me to stand as truth."The reimagining of my relationship to Pac has been deeply hurtful."

Taking a moment to clarify her point and assure the stars of the film she meant no ill will towards them, she continued: "To @KatGraham and @Dshippjr this is no fault of yours."

"Thank you for bringing so much heart and spirit to your roles," she said. "You both did a beautiful job with what you were given. Thank you both."

After highlighting inaccuracies in the film, Jada paid tribute to her friend, writing: "Happy birthday Pac, you are cradled in my heart for eternity. I love you."

Tupac was 25-years-old when he was gunned down in a drive-by shooting in 1996.

Some people drag themselves to the gym because… you know… health and stuff.

Others enjoy the gym, but know that a sesh is just around the corner and missing one class won't signal the end of the world.

And then there are the people who will find any way to shoehorn more exercise into their daily life.

Luckily for those people, a fitness studio in Britain's capital city has announced plans to transform a bus into a… wait for it… mobile spinning studio.

The good folk behind 1Rebel have explained that they intend for the bus to travel from four pick-up points across London, ending at the fitness company's studio.

The morning sessions, which will last 45 minutes and take place behind the tinted windows of the bus, are set to launch at the end of the summer pending Government approval.

Speaking to the Evening Standard, founder James Balfour explained the motivation behind the concept, saying "It is an absolute no-brainer for us that we can create more efficiency in people’s routines by transforming their commute."

"For those who want the components of a class, but perhaps don’t have the time to commit during the day, this provides a great solution for them to maximise time they would otherwise be spending just travelling to work."

Addressing safety concerns with CNBC, James said: "We are working with bus companies and the government to establish all health and safety conditions,"

"As this is such an innovative idea there are no established norms but due to the high levels of interest this is something that all our partners are focused on," he stressed.

Now cynical and all as we might be, would it not just be simpler to cycle to work and save the cash?

Áine Marry is about to graduate from the degree in Painting and Visual Culture from NCAD, and her final exhibition showcases a struggle that many of us are familiar with, but have never been able to externalise.

Áine uses her artistic talents to personify the experience of having mental health issues, most prominently, depression and anxiety.

Her exhibition pieces at first glance seem to be bright, cheerful depictions of a yellow-haired cartoon version of Aine, but on closer inspection, the work explores the inner dialogue between the person and the disorder.

A post shared by Áine Marry (@ainemarryart) on

Like all the best ideas, the inspiration to begin creating these characters came naturally, from Áine's own experiences with metal health issues, which she feels began around the age of 10 with anxiety.

'They started off as drawings. I had a notebook and it was just a Saturday one day where I hadn't showered and I just literally drew this avatar in a t-shirt and shorts saying 'oh I should probably shower' and I drew another one of this little person in a bed and all of these thoughts about anxiety,' she recalled.

'Once I started posting them to my personal Instagram, people liked it.'

She then brought her paintings in to her tutor at NCAD, who saw the massive potential for development in Áine's concept.

A post shared by Áine Marry (@ainemarryart) on

'Then the characters of depression and anxiety, I created them and they started to have a lot more too them, I could put them in different scenarios, like the Tinder profile, I wanted to put them into modern day situations because we live in tis modern social media age.'

Áine's characters live in the digital age, as does her actual art, with an Instagram dedicated to her project which has over 1567 followers to date who follow her process.

Seeing the lives of others through a digitally altered snapshot has become the norm, and while Áine's art Instagram helps others by sharing her relatable work, she feels that the online world can contribute negatively to those who are struggling.

'Before I had my art one [Instagram], I had my personal one, and sometimes you put something up when you don't feel that great, and you feel like you need this response of likes to make you feel better about yourself, like you're worth something, so it can be definitely dangerous.'

A post shared by Áine Marry (@ainemarryart) on

'But, it can be helpful,' she said, referencing the more personal pieces of art she has uploaded on her page that she has been wary about sharing.

'They are the ones I get the most response from. I get messages saying 'thank you so much' and it's so worth it then.'

Despite the improving societal attitude sto mental health, Áine still feels there is a way to go when it comes to removing shame from the label

'I still feel stigmatised and I would still squirm while talking about it with maybe family and friends.'

'It hasn't been talked about in so long, and now the conversation has finally been opened and it's stigmatised to a certain extent.'

A post shared by Áine Marry (@ainemarryart) on

As a society, the English language has adopted and borrowed terms such as 'depressed,' acting 'bipolar' and 'panic attack ' from the mental health conversation.

This casual use of the terminology, while harmless for the most part, can contribute to the dismissive nature held by some over the struggle of those with the actual disorders.

You know like when you say a word so many times it loses all meaning? It's called semantic satiation and it's a thing, I promise.

'There are people who can't get out of bed for three weeks because they genuinely can't live, where as you have people who are just tired and they're like 'I'm depressed, and that's not to take a way from anyone like you're not allowed to feel that way, but there is definitely people taking advantage of it,' she said, drawing on examples of celebrities using the terms to seem more relatable.

A post shared by Áine Marry (@ainemarryart) on

If the term 'I'm depressed' now stands for 'I'm sad,' then how does one with an actual mental health problem describe their symptoms to the wider world without feeling it has been minimised?

Áine's own struggles began when she was a child, but got worse when she transitioned into college life, leading to her seeking help.

'As a young girl it's really easy to start hating yourself visually, I just feel like that's the day and age we live in it's very easy, something can just click in your head where you're like 'I don't look okay,'' she said, reflecting on her relationship with her mental health in her childhood.

'I let myself get really really bad in college, I didn't know if I wanted to be here,' she said.

'You have the core problem but then you have all these other issues that stem from it, so it's been an ongoing thing, but recognising it in college, opening up and talking about it, and being like 'it is what it is' has really helped.'

Áine's exhibition, along with her fellow graduate's work, will be on display on NCAD's campus this weekend.

Since then, she took yet another step up the property ladder by securing a second home in the form of Emily Blunt and John Krasinki's former Hollywood dwelling, but choose to hang onto her first pad in Westwood.

According to Trulia – a residential real estate website – the building 'provides full-service amenities, including 24-hour valet and security, concierge and doorman, a heated pool, fitness centre, social room, card room, conference room and wine storage.'

Despite having no background in engineering, a group of girls from California have created a solar-powered tent in an effort to tackle the issue of homelessness in California.

Determined to lend a hand, but unable to contribute financially, the teenage girls decided to educate themselves with the help of online tutorials before turning their hand to the practical.

"Because we come from low-income families ourselves, we can’t give them money,” high school senior, Daniela Orozco, explained while speaking to Mashable.

“We wanted to offer something besides money,” explained her classmate Veronica Gonzalez.

“Because we live here, we see it growing constantly,” Maggie Mejia added. “If your parents miss X amount of bills, you can fall into homelessness too.”
