We've pretty much proved that chocolate makes us happy… but what about smarter?

When we were kids, our mammies would have shot a piece of chocolate away from our grubby little hands and replaced it with a banana… but it turns out that chocolate could be just thing the to give our brains a major boost.

According to scientists at the University of L'Aquila in Italy, cocoa has "the potential to counteract cognitive decline and sustain cognitive abilities."

The study, which was published in the journal Frontiers in Nutrition, says that flavanols are really good for our brains, and they're found by the bucket-load in cocoa.

The authors of the study, Valentina Socci and Michele Ferrara, found that those who consumed cocoa flavanols had improved memory, and were better able to focus and process visual information.

To further that, those who consumed chocolate regularly (which is anything from every five days to three months) had improved attention spans, better verbal fluency and were able to process information at a faster rate.

Not that we needed a reason to eat more chocolate, but let's just saw we won't feel as guilty munching on a Cadbury's Dairy Milk at lunch time.

Weddings are a pricey business.

Whether you opted for a bank loan in order to celebrate your union or postponed your big day in order to save as much as possible in the run-up, there are few couples who haven't felt the pinch when planning for their wedding.

Aware of the financial pressures which invariably accompany an engagement, one CEO in the States has made the decision to fund his employees' weddings.

Chieh Huang, the CEO of Boxed – a wholesale retailer – called a meeting in order to announce his intentions to his stunned staff.

In an incredibly moving speech which has been uploaded to YouTube, Chieh explained that he felt compelled to introduce the new policy after learning that an employee had been working seven days a week so he could bring his wedding forward in order for his ill mother to attend.

"No one at this company should feel pain like that," Chieh said in the video which has been viewed more than 50,000 times.

"I've thought about what we can do to help you guys, and what we can do to help other people in the company. So we got you out of work and got all these people here to tell you that we'd love to pay for your wedding, so that you guys can have it," Chieh continued.

The website spoke to the show's producer, Lewis Evans, and it turns out it's not that easy to get on the show.

They not only pick contestants from their applications, but also search through social media to find the perfect person.

“We cast our net far and wide by looking at social media profiles as it’s always quite easy to gauge on there people who are popular, aren’t afraid to show themselves off and have a big following.

“It’s all about having a great mix of desirable, aspirational singletons who have interesting and engaging personalities to keep our viewers glued and entertained by what’s going on in the villa,” Lewis explained.

So, if you think you're the queen of social media, and have a pretty outgoing personality, then there's no harm in applying to be on the show, right?

They want someone who "stands out from the crowd." Could that be you?

If so, you can apply to be on the series here.

The publication claims that she has been holding up production and has even refused to film a number of tapings.

“It’s like Kylie doesn’t even care,” an insider said.

“She just ignores any schedule that dictates when she’s supposed to be in the studio. Kylie just doesn’t show up when she’s needed, and no one knows that she isn’t coming.

“Kylie is upset at how the show is running out of content. She doesn’t want to give too much away but the footage seems boring and basic to her."

A judge, who faced considerable criticism for the lenient sentence he handed down in a recent rape case, has publicly defended his ruling.

Superior Court Judge Aaron Persky, who sentenced Brock Turned to just six months behind bars for rape last year, was vilified in the aftermath of the high-profile case.

Persky, who is facing a recall effort over the sentencing, has released a statement, and while he made no direct reference to the case which involved the Stanford student, Persky acknowledged the public's concern.

"As a prosecutor, I fought vigorously for victims. As a judge, my role is to consider both sides," he explained in his statement.

"California law requires every judge to consider rehabilitation and probation for first-time offenders," he continued. "It’s not always popular, but it’s the law, and I took an oath to follow it without regard to public opinion or my opinions as a former prosecutor.”

Turner, who will spend his life on the sex offenders' register, served just a quarter of a year at Santa Clara County jail for the crimes he committed against a young woman on Palo Alto university’s campus in January 2015 despite facing an initial 14 years at sentencing.

In a widely circulated letter written by Turner's victim at the time of the sentencing, she called for stronger sentences in an effort to deter against crimes of this nature.

"The seriousness of rape has to be communicated clearly, we should not create a culture that suggests we learn that rape is wrong through trial and error," she wrote.

"The consequences of sexual assault needs to be severe enough that people feel enough fear to exercise good judgment even if they are drunk, severe enough to be preventative."

Persky's statement has been filed with the Santa Clara County Registrar of Voters.

It's official – there isn't a single song those folk over at Coláiste Lurgan can't nail.

Taking on one of the biggest tracks of the year, the students tried their hand at Despacito, and with almost a quarter of a million views on YouTube, it's fair to say they pulled it out of the bag.

As the track is teetering perilously close to the realm of the 'overplayed' on most radio stations right now, there was a chance the public may not have embraced it, but it sounds like they gave the summer anthem a new lease of life.

"I am Spanish and after listening to this song hundreds of times everywhere I have started to hate it, but now as Gaeilge it is quite different." wrote one.

"Almost better than the original," added another while a fellow YouTuber wrote: "It's brilliant!!! They are all so talented and it sounds great as Gaeilge."

Dare we say, we prefer the Irish version?

OK, OK, we get it.

If we find the perfect lipstick or mascara, we keep it until the very last swipe.

Plus, if our lipstick is still half-full, we're not going to throw it out, are we?

Well, it turns out that we probably should, because expired make-up is pretty gross.

beauty, eye, fashion

One Redditor called Semicolon_Expected tested a few products that were lying around at the bottom of her make-up bag, knowing that they were definitely out-of-date.

And while the mascara she tested proved to be pretty rank, it was the lipstick that shocked us.

"So I swabbed my old Revlon Colorstay on a petri dish, the colour on one side and the clear on the other side and left it out for 3 days," she wrote on a beauty thread.

And after three days it was FULL of gross, bacterial colonies.

"I was surprised it grew so much since other cultures I swabbed had more spotty growth and not such big colonies in such a short time with no incubation."

After looking at the results of the tests, Glamour spoke to microbiologist Jason Tetro, and he said "when you're constantly dipping into beauty products, you're introducing bacteria."

This can happen to expensive and budget beauty products, so that's another thing to think about when buying that Chanel lippy.

We're definitely going to keep track of when we bought our make-up from now on.
