Yearly Archives: 2016

Earlier this year, Taylor Swift hosted a Fourth of July party so legendary she could easily have offered up her entire Thanksgiving in its honour.

But eager to continue her reign as the queen of public holidays, last week the Bad Blood singer rounded up her famous squad to mark Thanksgiving with a trip to the beach, an epic attempt at the Mannequin Challenge and, most importantly, a Disney-themed singsong.

A recent pair of videos posted to Todrick Hall’s Instagram account show the 26-year-old pop-princess playing the piano as the YouTuber sings a personalised version of Part of Your World from The Little Mermaid.

Clearly enjoying her friend’s theatrical performance, the candid clips show a relaxed TayTay laughing and joking with her companions.

Well ladies, it's actually happened.

After weeks spent wondering if the X Factor team had lost their minds, Honey G has finally said goodbye to the UK show after weeks of non-stop controversy.

But if the aspiring rapper thought the speculation into her background might die down now that she's been eliminated, she was sorely mistaken as she discovered after taking a seat on the This Morning sofa earlier today.

Cutting straight to the chase, Phillip Schofield asked the former X Factor contestant if her entire act had been an elaborate hoax.

Suggesting she may actually be playing a character a lá Leigh Francis, Phillip asked: "Is it an act? Are you like… Keith Lemon?"

Unsurprisingly, Honey G stressed her authenticity, responding: "No! You know, I'm not fake, This isn't an act, you know."

"Obviously I've grown up, you know, on the underground scene, in the music scene. I've been a musician the whole of my life."

"I'm known to BBC Radio One Extra which is the UK's biggest black music station. I've been involved in the station since it was founded."

"My mum's a classical pianist, that's where I get my, you know, music from, she's also known to the BBC," she went on to stress.

"So, people saying, you know, 'this is an act' to someone like me. I've got a degree in music. I've been a musician the whole of my life."

Acknowledging her distinct act, she added: "I think I might have picked up street from being in the underground music scene and it's become part of my personality."

Yeah guys, it's just her personality…

The weekend just gone was, for many people, the last one before payday, so instead of hitting the town, the vast majority of us bunkered down with a bottle or two of (cheap) wine.

Unfortunately for Keisha Buchanan of Sugababes fame, getting her hands on a bottle of vino was far from easy if her Twitter page is anything to go by.

In a move which has us cringing into our sleeves this morning, the singer admitted that after being refused for having no identification, she  – wait for it – pulled out her Wiki page to prove her date of birth.

And, unsurprisingly, Twitter is now having a field day.

Responding to her tweet, fans of the Hole in My Head singer, wrote: "Don't you know who I am?' Lol You should have sang the 'baby baby babyyyyyyyyy' bits from Too Lost in You."

"That's so f*cking scarlet," added another while someone responded: "You do look that young tbh."

After fans of the singer retweeted her post, Keisha felt the need to clarify her desperate move, tweeting: "I'm in charge of drinks for tonight's dinner party!"

"I will not let my girls down lol #DesperateActions lol," she added.

Ah lads, it's like pulling up your Facebook page the next time you're in the offy…

It’s party season – yay! – so what better opportunity to chill out with friends we haven’t seen in yonks than hosting a Christmas party in our gaff?

From the best music to lash on (HINT: Mariah will feature heavily) to how to hostess with the mostess, here are our helpful tips to organising a killer festive bash.

1. ‘Lie’ about when it’s kicking off

You know your mates best – some knock on the door ridiculously early when you’re mid-contour (argh!), and others rock up when it’s nearly wrap up time. A devious but totally necessary tip is to tell your eager beaver friends the start time is later, and the late arses that it’s earlier. Sneaky, us?

2. Choons

If there’s not a bit of Wham, East 17 or Elton on your playlist, we hate to break it to you but you’re doing something very wrong. Our tip is to hit up Spotify to create the ultimate festive playlist. Altogether now: “All I want for Christmas is youuu!” Thanks Maz.

3. Deck the halls

And the sitting room. And the kitchen. And sure go on, put a mini Christmas tree in the bathroom too for good measure. It’s a CHRISTMAS party, so think less is more, and go a bit mad with the tinsel like a good woman.

4. Make a swanky toast

You’re a suave, sophisticated woman, right? (FYI: it still counts if you answered a doubtful 'ish' to this). So set the tone by filling some flutes with a classy drink to toast the season / your friendship / Michelle’s unreal sequin dress. We’ll be quaffing Makulu’s Pomula, which has to be the prettiest fizz there is. Served like champers, it’s a lightly sparkling blend of rosé wine with exotic pomegranate and marula fruit flavours – yum!

5. Sort some nibbles

You know and we know there’s nothing worse than the crushing disappointment of discovering there’s no food at a party. “Shocking! Not even a bowl of crisps!” will be the whispers amongst the disgruntled guests. So even if you only serve bowls of nuts, crisps or other snackables, have something for the love of God.

6. Embrace the novelty head gear

Novelty head gear can make or break a party. OK, maybe not make or break, but they definitely add to the craic. If your budget allows it, pop into a euro store and pick up some Santa hats, reindeer headbands and flashing angel halo boppers. Sure what other opportunity will you have to wear a flashing angel halo bopper? This is your chance. TAKE IT!

7. Have the craic

Yep, you’re the hostess, but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy yourself. Our most important piece of advice is not to get bogged down worrying that other people aren’t having a good time – trust us, they are. Now did Fairytale of New York just come on? Go, on, off you go and do your best Shane MacG.

Pomula is available in selected Spar, Eurospar, Mace and Londis stores nationwide. For more info, click here.

It's long been the highlight of the broadcasting calendar: The Late Late Toy Show.

And while in previous times Irish diasporas have had to largely do without, getting the show online has in more recent years allowed those in the further flung locations around the globe to partake live in the spectacle.

Indeed, and with more 1.5million viewers expected to watch the show this Friday, Montrose today confirmed that the Toy Show will be available to watch worldwide for free, live and on-demand on the RTÉ Player.

Hurrah!

Host Ryan Tubridy said in response: "One of the great things about The Late Late Toy Show is that it's the one night when we can collectively forget all the doom and gloom in what has been a very weird year.

"The fact that it is available to watch free across the world means that Irish emigrants get a chance to connect with their home in a way that is absolutely unique to us as a people. Nobody else would understand what this bonkers show is about!"

To get us all in the mood, RTÉ Player today launched the ultimate Late Late Toy Show collection, celebrating the show's TV gold moments through the years. You can watch it here.

The Late Late Toy Show airs on RTÉ One and RTÉ Player this Friday from 9:35pm.

We have been seeing so many alternative advent calendars this year, from wine to gin– and everything in between.

However, the latest one may just be the strangest advent calendar yet, and we sort of love it.

Cheese Advent Calendar

Annem Hobson, a food blogger from London, has invented a cheese advent calendar… and has become our ultimate hero as a result.

Cheese Advent Calendar

Each day contains a delicious piece of cheese, from cheddar to brie!

A CHEESE advent calendar exists and why has no-one thought of this before?!

The kicker is that Annem won't be ready to distribute these amazing calendars until 2017, so we'll have to wait.

Cheese Advent Calendar

You can register your interest over on cheeseadventcalendar.com, where you'll get updates on Annems cheesy progress.

However, if you simply cannot wait until next year, why not make your own?

Annem posted instructions on her blog, so we can all have our very own cheese-filled calendar.

Thanks BRIE to God.

The following is an extract from Peter Varga's Humans of Dublin.

Drawn from the archives of the incredibly popular online blog, Peter Varga's Humans of Dublin gives a voice to the people of our capital city.

A collection of portraits, memories and snapshots, Humans of Dublin provides a thought-provoking insight into the Irish capital and its vibrant and diverse inhabitants.

Pictured above is a resident who shares his story of persistence and perseverance.

On the day I was born, the doctors told my mum I would never be able to walk. She said, ‘Of course he will.’

I have only one leg. I was born with a birth defect, so I’m using a prosthetic leg since I was one-year-old. I was actually walking since I was about one and a half.

Every few months other kids had new shoes – I had new shoes and a new leg too. I was a part of the football team in school, I cycle, I do everything.

When I was 16, I even tried to work in a pub, but the bar manager told me he won’t hire me to be lumping around in his pub. Well, he didn’t believe in me either.

I never actually knew how it was to have two legs, and I never felt disabled or in any way less than others.

What is the best thing about having only one leg?

Well, people ask me if I would have one wish would I wish for another leg.

And I always say I don’t think I would waste my wish for that. Having only one leg made me think more and made me more creative, and I think that helps a lot. I see the world differently from everybody else.

I want people to look at me and get inspired by me running after my dreams. I want them to have no excuses and say, ‘If he can do it, I can do it, too … ’

The thought of your other half sharing intimate details of your sex life with his friends is more than most of us could bear, so the idea of it being shared with the nation is hideous beyond measure.

And yet that didn't didn't seem to dawn on I'm a Celebrity … Get Me Out of Here star, Wayne Bridge, when he decided to tell all during a recent trip to the Bush Telegraph.

Sounding stunned that many couples experience a revival in their sexcapades after welcoming children, Wayne exclaimed: "I think they’re having us on! How can it be better?"

In a move which mortified wife Frankie of The Saturdays, Wayne continued: "It’s either the same or less. I’m not having it at all. Why would it get better?"

"I think it’s always been up there with me and Frank. You’re together for years so you obviously try everything out before you’ve had babies, surely."

"I can’t believe I’m even having this conversation because her mum and dad are going to be watching," he suddenly added after appearing to remember his comments were being beamed out to millions.

Taking to Twitter to acknowledge her husband's big mouth, Frankie wrote: "Ohhh, just stop talking… I'm begging you."

Taking the opportunity to stir the pot, Frankie's fans egged Wayne on, responding: "Don't be a spoilsport Frankie. Go Wayne. It's good to share."

"I kept refreshing to see your reaction lol!! How funny!" added another.

Ah here, she took it better than we would have.

He may have played one of the toughest characters in television history, but it looks like James Gandolfini's character on The Sopranos beared no relation to his true personality if a recent anecdote is anything to go by.

Reflecting on James' presence on the hugely popular HBO show, former co-star Drea de Matteo, who played Adriana La Cerva, revealed that the actor had once made a significant gesture towards his co-stars.

"When all of us made our deals with HBO, none of the actors were included in the DVD sales for the show," Drea explained as she remembered her time with the late actor.

"And when he found out about that, he was pretty pissed off, and he called each actor into his trailer one by one, and cut everybody a VERY big check for thousands of dollars, in the double numbers."

"And paid each actor a cut of the proceeds he'd gotten from the DVD sales at that time," she added.

"That was completely unnecessary, but Jesus Christ, it was something I'll never forget, there aren't many people who would do that," Drea said.

The anecdote, which has been shared extensively on social media, has been met with delight from fans of the actor who sadly passed away in 2013.

"I was ready to have a miserable day before reading that. That has completely uplifted me, thanks," wrote one.

"I love finding out that famous people I like are genuinely brilliant people in real life," remarked a fan.

"What I love about that story is it is literally the diametric opposite of what Tony Soprano did/would do," added another.

Between James and Tom Hanks, we're struggling here this morning.
