Yearly Archives: 2016

Look, you don't need us to tell you that choosing a Christmas present for a new partner is a bloody minefield.

The first festive season with the boyfriend du jour is a real milestone, and it's made all the more difficult if your relationship is still in its first flush when you're only bleedin' mad about him, but still struggle to remember his surname after a few too many.

While you undoubtedly want to impress, you don't want to scare the bejaysus out of him, and you have a sneaking suspicion that with one overly romantic or intimate gift you might find yourself celebrating New Year's Eve alone.

Ladies, you walk a very fine line in this situation, and we're here to hold your hand.

Band T-shirts

Lads love T-shirts. It's a simple fact of life, and it makes Christmas very easy for most of us.

Whether it's Kanye, Metallica or Radiohead he's into, you can't go wrong springing for a T-shirt that gives more than a passing nod to his favourite band.

Guns and Roses Longline Band T-shirt Asos €26.67

David Bowie Band T-shirt Asos: €24

The classic wallet

Choosing clothes for a lad can be a minefield (unless it's a band T-shirt), but accessories are a lot easier, especially if you keep it simple.

There are some seriously slick wallets on the highstreet right now which definitely won't break the bank.

Beer

If you know even one lad that wouldn't thank you for a crate of his favourite craft beers, we'd like to meet him.

While it might seem a little impersonal, it's actually far from it… especially if you've taken note of his favourite tipples over the last six months.

Brewdog Vagabond Pale Ale O'Briens Wine €3.00

James Brown Chocolate Orange Stout €3.80

Board games

Kick it old-school on Christmas Day and gift your new bloke with a game the pair of yee can puzzle over together.

Yes, it's not the most sentimental, but hey that's what next year's Christmas is for!

The Late Late Toy Show was an absolute cracker this year, with over 1.4 million people tuning in to watch Ryan Tubridy demonstrate the year's most popular toys with some help from his little pals.

Tickets to the event are highly coveted, and international viewers in 102 countries outside of Ireland streamed the show.

This year saw Ryan don a multitude of jumper and an Baloo the bear suit that was oddly bountiful in the booty for the opening sequence.

Some highlights had to include Edie Rose 's penchant for pizza making and Beibhinn's heart warming diabetes doll.

There were also architectural endeavours, presidential letters from Áras an Uachtaráin and a medley of country tunes that wouldn't have been out of place at a Sunday session in any country.

The new behind the scenes video shows some sneak peeks of the performers warm ups, some backstage jitters, and, naturally, lots of beyond adorable kids.

The spine chilling rehearsal for the award meriting rendition of "Fix you" (who needs tickets for Croke Park) is featured, as well as plenty of bloopers.

However we never got an excuse for that specimen of a Christmas shirt, Ryan.

As much as we love a glass of Prosecco on a night out, there's nothing better than sitting at home with a steaming cuppa tea (and biscuits, of course).

However, now that the festive spirit of Christmas is truly in the air, Aldi (yep, ALDI) has created a seasonal concoction that you're either going to love or hate.

Presenting Prosecco-flavoured tea bags.

Yes, it sounds completely strange, but we're totally loving it.

Aldi describe its new creation as "a vibrant festive taste with an invigorating Italian Prosecco profile."

We'll raise a mug to that...

The tea bags are decaffeinated and non-alcoholic, so you can get all of that fab Prosecco flavour with none of the side effects.

We'd say these babies are going to be snatched up fast!

The new Penneys in Liffey Valley opened today, and people were a bit, shall we say, enthusiastic.

And by enthusiastic, we mean the queue to get in the door this morning was mahoosive.

The new super branch comprises three floors of fashion, homeware, shoes and accessories, an Insomnia to rest your weary bones after an ‘I’m only going in for tights’ splurge, and even a seating area with a charging station for when your phone’s out of juice.

Even the decor is super cool – in particular, we're loving the disco fever neon signs.

And needless to say, people are losing it.

While some were a little less impressed by the whole thing.

Well we can't wait for a gawk. Have you been? is it magical? Let us know!

The German Chancellor has called for a burqa ban after saying the "'full veil is not appropriate."

"The full face veil should be banned, wherever legally possible," she said, at her conservative CDU Party conference.

She also stressed her determination that there will not be a repeat of this year's migrant crisis, as she made her pitch for a fourth term as Chancellor.

She is running unopposed for a new term leading the CDU.

She previously told Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland that: "A completely covered woman has almost no chance of integrating herself in Germany."

The proposed legislation must now go before the Senate for approval before becoming law.

The proposed legislation follows the Netherland's decision last week, where Dutch MPs voted to ban the Islamic full-face veil from public places such as schools and hospitals.

The burqa is already banned in public places in France, Belgium and Chad.

In a 2011 poll by the Journal, up to 50 percent of Irish people think that the burqa should be banned.

Niall Horan is fond of writing a monthly newsletter to his fans where he talks about the various aspects of his life – and this month, it was all about Ireland and Christmas.

However, it wasn't as cheery as you might expect, with Niall admitting that he struggles to relax when he's home in Mullingar.

The singer said that's he hasn't been home since last Christmas, and because Ireland is so small, he doesn't know what to do with his downtime.

"I haven't been home since last Christmas so I miss everyone and hopefully this year I'll get to spend some quality time with family and friends," he begins.

"I really do wish I could spend more time at home but with Ireland as small as it is, I struggle to completely relax. So fingers crossed because I miss that place a lot.

"After Christmas I'm going to fall off the face of the Earth and do one of my disappearing acts.

There's a lot to be said for suspending your cynicism in order to properly immerse yourself in a fantasy TV series, but it sounds like Jonah Hill won't be trying it any time soon.

With Game of Thrones, Westworld and Stranger Things dominating the ratings this year, there's no doubt that fantasy and sci-fi is where the money is right now, but Jonah Hill isn't really buying it.

During a recent interview, the Wolf of Wall Street actor admitted that when it comes to film and television, he needs to know that the storyline had a chance of actually happening for him to commit to it.

Acknowledging that he's drawn to roles in movies based on true stories, he said: "I think life is so interesting on its own that, you know, I'm not against other kinds of stories."

"I don't really watch – like, my friends kind of make fun of me – I don't really watch sci-fi or anything like that. I've never seen Game of Thrones."

Aware he may have ruffled a few million feathers with that admission, Jonah added: "I'm sure it's amazing, but I don't really watch things that couldn't or didn't happen, you know?"

"Humanity is probably the most interesting thing. How people treat each other and how people feel, and that's just for me."

"Like, whether it's good or bad, I'm probably a pretty over-sensitive person," he continued. "And I think I just find it entertaining and interesting to explore why people feel and do certain things."

While die-hard Game of Thrones fans in SHEmazing! HQ are reeling right now, we totally see where he's coming from.

We have to say we're kinda excited about the Irish version of Dancing With The Stars.

Kicking off on January 8 – just in time for sober nights in – after oodles of speculation it has just now been confirmed that Amanda Byram and Nicky Byrne WILL act as hosts.

With a total of 11 celebrities waltzing their way into the nation’s living rooms as they battle it out for the coveted glitterball trophy, Amanda declared this afternoon: “I am thrilled to be working on DWTS.

"For years I have been looking for the right project to bring me back to Irish TV and as soon as I was offered the role I didn't hesitate. The team and I are looking forward to entertaining the nation by combining a much loved format with a uniquely Irish spin.”

Meanwhile, 2FM presenter Nicky Byrne is of course no stranger to the ballroom having donned his dancing shoes for the BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing where he made it to week ten alongside his partner Karen Clifton.

Nicky stated today: "I am absolutely thrilled to be to be co-hosting Dancing With The Stars. Having been a contestant on the UK show, I know only too well that there is simply no other show like it on TV.

"I am ready and delighted to dust off my Cuban heels and work with Amanda, the judges and all the celebs, in what I believe will be an incredibly exciting show for Irish TV".

The show will air on RTÉ One for 12 weeks from 6.30pm Sunday January 8.

The celebrity contestants be the scored by an expert panel of judges and the viewing public at home. All the contestants will be safe for the first two shows, but after that one dancer and their partner will leave the competition each week.

The Repeal Project has become nationally recognised thanks to its signature black slogan jumpers.

Indeed, the items are now one of Ireland's most sought-after style items, pretty much selling out wherever they are stocked.

However, unfortunately a SHEmazing! investigation has now revealed that some people are cashing in on the political campaign via fake Repeal merchandise outlets.

A photo posted by Repeal Project (@repealproject) on

Claiming to be affiliated with the Repeal Project, the jumpers first went on sale in July as part of a campaign to bring visibility to the issue of abortion rights – still one of Ireland's most controversial conflicts.

Of course, the actual Repeal Project donates all proceeds of merchandise to the Abortion Rights Campaign.

One of the seemingly counterfeit Repeal merch sites we reached out to flogs its wares on American website Teespring.

We went undercover – querying on Facebook if the clothing on sale would eventually benefit abortion efforts in Ireland. In response, we were told that profits would eventually be donated to charity.

They added by way of explanation: "We haven't actually made any money yet but I'm sure we could send you proof of a donation as soon as we do!" before immediately blocking us on all social media.

To date, it is stated clearly on the same online platform that 32 items brandishing the Repeal slogan have been sold to date.

One concerned Facebook user posted to the site's corresponding Facebook page, which has almost 400 active followers, to ask: "Are you giving your profits to the Abortion Rights Campaign? Are you with the Repeal Project?" only to have her comment deleted by the page.

"We didn't like how they (the Repeal Project) were marketing their sweatshirts through exclusivity and pop-up shops," the page creator told another Facebook user.

When the practise was highlighted with Anna Cosgrave, founder of the Repeal Project, she told SHEmazing! "A number of 'fake' accounts have cropped up, some have been shut down."

She added: "It would be great if the people running it came forward."

A photo posted by Repeal Project (@repealproject) on

A spokesperson for the HunReal Issues also told us: "My first thought when I saw there was a website selling imitation REPEAL jumpers for profit and not to support campaigning to Repeal The 8th was of course disgust, but also what a great job Anna had done on a project to get visibility for the cause as well as fundraising for the Abortion Rights Campaign."

"The fact that there's a bootleg market for the in demand jumpers shows just how many people want to show their support for the women of Ireland and their quest for bodily autonomy. That doesn't make the profiteering any less in bits though."

As of today, the fake page is still live.

SHEmazing! is still awaiting confirmation that it has donated profits to charity.

"On the 17th August in 2010, my husband and I became friends. On the same day five years later we became husband and wife. We’re now very excited to announce that a year later (and again to the exact date) we became parents-to-be!! And so THAT’S why I passed on the mulled wine.

“Words cannot describe how overwhelmed with happiness we are. We feel so blessed to be adding another little Keating to the family and this news is like all of our Christmas wishes coming true.

“This Christmas we’ll just be asking Santa to keep our baby safe and to spread some extra happiness and joy to you and all your families also,” she wrote.
