Yearly Archives: 2016

The President of Maynooth University, Professor Philip Nolan, has said that college fees need to be increased by at least €2000, but that the cost should be split evenly between students and the Government.

Calling it a price regulation, Prof Nolan said that it would ensure universities wouldn’t exploit the proposed loan scheme by driving fees too high, according to the The Irish Independent. Fees currently stand at €3,000 a year.

"We are spending about €2,000 a year less than we should be – we need to be spending about €9,000," he said, before explaining that he would like to see an increase from €3,000 to €4,000 in the student contribution, and a rise from €4,000 to €5,000 in the State spend per student.

Claiming the scheme which would see the State covering the cost of the college fees upfront – with graduates paying it back once they hit a particular earnings threshold – the professor said that it would relieve parents from having to pay any fees.

“People may then disagree with it, but it would be a disaster if people were reacting to an incomplete idea or to an inaccurate perception of an idea,” Mr Nolan said.

“It would very negative if fees in our system were to reach UK levels and extraordinary if they were to reach levels that we see in some US universities.

“It is essential to the success of this proposal in Ireland that there is proper regulation of undergraduate fees, similar to the way in which energy regulator operates.”

What do you think? Are you on board with the idea of a loan scheme?

OK, so arguably we still have another few weeks of eating and drinking with abandon before having to consider New Year detoxes and stabs at 'clean' diets.

However, there is also no doubt that sugar is by now a year-round issue.

Indeed, during 2016 the backlash against it really picked up pace – so much so that family-friendly and health-conscious brands are scrambling to reduce the sugar content in their produce.

From simply cutting down the amount to finding new innovative processes, manufacturers are taking the matter seriously.

Just recently, and partially in response to the Irish government's A Healthy Weight For Ireland plan, Tesco released a statement confirming it has reduced the amount of sugar in all its own-brand soft drinks.

The World Health Organisation advises that our sugar intake should not exceed 5 percent of our total daily calories, including the sugar “hidden” in the foods we eat.

This represents about five to six teaspoons daily. Given that the average Irish person consumes an astonishing 24 teaspoons every single day, there is still a lot to be done to reach the WHO recommendations.

Tesco isn’t the only brand trying to cut down the amount of sugar they use in their food. Between 2000 and 2013, Nestlé reduced the amount of sugar in its products by a third, especially in its range of children’s food.

Recently, the food giant also announced that its in-house scientists had found a method to cut sugar in their chocolate by as much as 40 percent. The exact process, which is being kept a secret, supposedly alters the structure of sugar, making it taste sweeter in smaller amounts; a reduced-sugar chocolate could hit the shelves as early as 2018.

“We want people to get used to a different taste, a taste that would be more natural,” Stefan Catsicas of Nestle explained in an interview with Bloomberg. “We really want to be the drivers of the solution.”

And in the UK, Lucozade, Orangina, and Ribena will all also reduce their sugar content reduced by half in order to avoid forthcoming tax penalties.

According to DailyMail.com, coffee chains Costa, Starbucks, and Caffe Nero are also trying to cut the sugar from their festive drinks, which contain up to 80g of sugar per cup.

In Ireland, we have another year or so before the arrival of the so-called sugar tax: during the Budget 2017 announcement in October, Finance Minister Michael Noonan confirmed that a tax a sugary drinks will be imposed from the spring of 2018 – in line with similar legislation in the UK.

Listen closely, mythical creatures; there is a new hair colour trend trending online, and it may be the best one yet.

In 2016, we have seen countless quirky hair trends, from unicorn locks to phoenix hair… but now we have mermaids.

Mermaid hair has become EXTREMELY popular on social media, with millions of people using the hashtag to share their gorgeous manes.

The concept is quite similar to unicorn hair, but the colours are a little bit more sea-friendly AND the hair must be styled with a wave (sea-pun alert).

The colour combination can vary, but typically any mermaid hair look will include blue, green, purple and pink (not necessarily all together).

Anyone looking to make a change in 2017, this might just be your answer.

Twitter was abuzz with love for Louis Tomlinson following his incredibly brave performance on last night’s X Factor, and he has paid tribute to fans as well as his beloved mum Johannah.

Taking to Twitter to reflect on his performance of Just Hold On, just days after Johannah’s untimely passing, he admitted he was ‘feeling the love’.

“That was harder than I ever imagined. I want to thank everyone around me and all of the amazing fans out there that made that so special!” tweeted Louis.

The former One Direction star, who was supported by Liam, Niall and Harry on the night, added: “Feeling so much love around me and my family. Mum would have been so f***king proud (sorry for swearing, mum). Love you!”

The dad-of-one also extended special thanks to his collaborator, Steve Aoki, who was there to hug Louis during Simon Cowell’s emotional tribute.

“Steve, you have been such a rock and inspiration throughout this. Pure talent and a real gent!” he added.

After the show, Louis was joined by the One Direction boys along with sister Lottie and step-dad Dan, for post-show drinks in a nearby bar.
