Some 40 bodies have already been recovered from wreckage following a plane crash in the north-eastern African country of South Sudan.

The cargo aircraft is believed to have crashed this morning shortly after taking-off near the international airport in the country's capital, Juba.

It is unclear how many of the casualties were on the plane and how many were on the ground, although a presidential spokesman told Reuters there are two on-board survivors: a child and a crew member.

The Russian-built plane was heading to Paloch in the Upper Nile State and crashed less than a kilometre from the runway.

Al Jazeera's Hiba Morgan, reporting from the scene, said this morning: "It is raining hard here in Juba, making it difficult to look for more victims.

"The cargo plane was carrying passengers and it is believed that many of them were not wearing seat belts."

The Juba airport hosts regular commercial flights, as well as military aircraft and cargo planes delivering aid to remote regions cut off by road. South Sudan remains one of the world's most volatile nations.

The Department Of Foreign Affairs states on its website: "We advise against all travel to South Sudan, including the capital Juba.

"Anyone thinking of travelling to South Sudan should reconsider their travel plans and not to travel at this time."

The country currently implements a 6pm to 6am curfew.

Russian officials have now said publicly it is “impossible” that a technical fault or pilot error caused Saturday’s Metrojet tragedy.

Some 224 people died on board the Moscow-based airline on Saturday morning.

The Irish-owned Airbus A321-200 crashed in a remote mountainous part of the Sinai Peninsula 23 minutes after taking off from the holiday resort of Sharm el-Sheikh.

With mystery continuing to surround the incident, Metrojet's Alexander Smirnov explained earlier today: "There are no circumstances where a plane can just fall apart in mid-air.

“There is no technical fault or stopping of internal systems that could lead to the aircraft's dismembering.

"If we don't take in fantastical versions that the plane can be destroyed by a change in pressure, the only plausible reason is mechanical action aimed at the plane."

Despite earlier reports from Egyptian officials, the aircraft's crew did not make any distress or SOS calls prior to the crash.

There has been growing speculation in the Russian media that Flight 7K9268 may have been destroyed by an on-board explosion.

And although politicians from Egypt, Russia and the US have previously played down the likelihood of an Islamic State-linked terrorist attack, Mr Smirnov said today that "nothing can be ruled out".

Except for three Ukrainians and one Belarusian, all of those on board were Russian. Most of them were holidaying in Sharm el-Sheikh – a resort also popular with Irish tourists. Twenty-five were children.

With a 20km radius currently being scanned, more than 170 bodies have been recovered from the crash site. The remains of 140 victims were flown to St Petersburg this morning.

Emirates, Lufthansa, Qatar Airways and Air France have all stopped flying over the turbulent Sinai Peninsula until more is known about what caused the crash.

Mail Online reported over the weekend that British Airways pilots were told months ago not to fly in the region below 25,000ft because of the risk of terrorist-lead strikes.

A helicopter has collided with a Co Longford pub, skidding into the nearby banks of the Royal Canal.

Incredibly, both passengers on board have survived the accident, though several bystanders have been treated for shock.

The incident took place at 9.15pm yesterday in the village of Abbeyshrule in Co Longford.

The pub in question is the well-known Rustic Inn bar and restaurant.

Ciaran Doyle, 14, told RTE Radio today that he was doing work on his family's home with his father when they spotted the helicopter flying unusally low – prompting them to follow its flight path to investigate.

“I went up with my phone and recorded it, and it was hovering over the canal and we were watching it and it started to go in close to the Rustic Inn pub in the centre of the village,” he explained.

“It was coming towards the back when it swung around and hit off the back of the wooden back of  the Rustic.

“It tore it, and there was water coming out, and the minute I saw it my hands started to shake and I picked up the phone and dialled the emergency services,” he said.

RTE.ie also reports that while the pilot and one passenger have not been seriously injured, significant structural damage has been caused to the pub.

A spokesperson from the Department Of Transport said two members of the Air Accident Investigation Unit attended the scene, and Gardaí have preserved it for a full investigation

Angelina Jolie was involved in a frightening incident in Beverley Hills yesterday when the car she was travelling in skidded, hitting a curb and causing two tires to explode.

The actress was leaving the screening of her movie, Unbroken, at the Writers’ Guild Theatre when the frightening incident took place.

Angelina was later taken away in another car, though witnesses of the scene say they wouldn’t be surprised if she had suffered an injury: “It was pretty bad – the tire exploded and it’s amazing nothing worse happened to the car. I wouldn’t be surprised if she has whiplash.”

That sounds so scary, we’re glad it wasn’t worse than it could have been and everybody was okay!

Actress Billie Piper is being quizzed by police after she was involved in a road collision with a 16-year-old cyclist who was rushed to hospital with serious injuries.

The actress, who starred in Doctor Who and The Secret Diary Of A Call Girl, was questioned by police after colliding with the cyclist, who slammed into her car at high speed.

Billie was left so shaken that she was forced to pull out of her leading part in a West End play.

The actress’ sons Winston (5) and Eugene (2) were in the back of her Volkswagen Golf as she attempted a U-turn on a steep section of road in Camden, London.

She is understood to have been driving at under five miles per hour as she crossed into the path of the teen cyclist who was travelling downhill at a fast speed.

The bike slammed into the back of the car and the boy was thrown to the ground.

The teen was taken to hospital and the actress was questioned by police, but not arrested.

A police spokesperson said “enquiries” into the incident are ongoing.

The Script lads have opened up about their near death experience after their tour bus crashed – and said being drunk saved them!

The Irish band spoke about their trauma in America while on the road with One Republic earlier this year.

Guitarist Mark Sheehan said, “The bus crashed one night. We were in the middle of recording in the mobile studio and we were going 55mph on to the on-ramp of a motorway. The bus slammed to a stop and everyone went flying.

“A few instruments were harmed but everyone was OK. Thankfully we were pretty drunk at the time. The reality hit us the next day – that if we had been in bed at the time of the crash, we could have broken our necks.”

The band, whose new album No Sound Without Silence comes out on September 15th, have turned their tour coach into a mini-nightclub and renamed it the “craic house”.

Singer Danny O’Donoghue said, “We booked a load of lasers and a smoke machine for the bus so as soon as we finish recording for the night, we turn them on and have a DIY nightclub.”

As long as it doesn’t crash again lads!
