avocado

Last year seemed to be the year of the avocado.

From corner street cafés to high-end restaurants, you were guaranteed to come across smashed avocado on toast or even avocado smoothies.

But now, a new café is opening in Amsterdam that's dedicated to the smooth green fruit, and if you thought you were over the avocado scene, think again.

The Avocado Show will open its doors in the De Pijp district of Amsterdam in February and will serve everything from breakfast to late-night meals and drinks.

Set up by three friends, Jamie, Ron and Julien, they have insisted that they won't be running out of ideas anytime soon and the entire menu has been dedicated to the super fruit.

Fed up of eating burgers with plain old buns?  Don’t worry: the avocado bun has arrived.

Refinery 29 has credited the Foodeco site with the creation of the avocado bun – a healthy alternative to the traditional bread-based bun which is giving us some serious avocado inspo.

From what we’ve seen, this culinary creation can be easily put together by peeling a whole avocado before cutting it in half and stacking it full of good stuff.

And while we’re on the topic of avocado awesomeness, here are some of the other impressive avo trends we’ve spotted online.

Avocado Roses:

Avocado Mousse:

Avocado Smoothies:

Avocado Cake:

And of course, Avocado Toast:

Back in the day the avocado was a mysterious being people in hotter countries always seemed to be putting on their faces, but since earning its superfood status the green and black beauty has received international acclaim.

Unfortunately for avo-lovers on this side of the world though, all that creamy green goodness still comes at fairly noticeable cost.

But not to worry – someone has finally come up with a simple (and cheap) device which will allow you to grow you own avocado tree at home.

The AvoSeedo is a plastic avocado-shaped bowl with a flower-shaped hole in its centre which can be bought online for less than €12.

To grow an avocado tree, all you have to do is place a peeled avocado seed into the hole and then put the AvoSeedo into a water-filled pot.

From then on your avocado plantation will be pretty low maintenance – only requiring fresh water every couple of weeks.

After one to three months you’ll finally have your own teeny tiny avocado producing machine.  Sounds amazing right?

Well, unfortunately the Daily Mail has discovered it can take up to 13 years before the tree would be mature enough to produce any actual avocados.

So unless you really have the patience of a saint, you might have to find some other source of avocados in the meantime.

We're not even joking a little bit when we tell you that an avocado shortage is fuelling a crime wave over in New Zealand.

Since the beginning of the year, New Zealand has seen nearly 40 large-scale robberies from avocado orchards, and police are saying that up to 350 individual fruits have been taken at a time.

This comes after farmers had a poor season last year which saw a lower amount of the crop grown. However, in 2015 an additional 96,000 households started to buy avocados in New Zealand and suppliers haven't been able to keep up.

According to The Guardian, the thefts took place in the middle of the night, with robbers using blankets to collect a few after "raking" them off the trees.

"These stolen avocados can carry risks," said Sergeant Aaron Fraser.

"They are unripe, some have been sprayed recently and they may still carry toxins on the skin. But with the prices so high at the moment, the potential for profit is a strong inducement for certain individuals."

However, the New Zealand Avocado CEO, Jen Scoular, said that farmers are becoming more savvy about protecting their crops now.

Get ready for avocado lovers everywhere to absolutely lose the run of themselves with tis news.

Tesco have started selling packs of frozen, pre-peeled, pre-stoned, avocado.

Can you even? We feel like there are a lot of avocado on toast and matcha latte lovers in active wear who simply cannot even right now.

Apparently, customers told the supermarket they REALLY love avocados but they are simply just too messy to prepare. Why do the things we love hurt us so much? A recent 30 percent spike in sales- which is supposedly thanks to Nigella Lawson's new TV show, has confirmed this love of the green superfood.

Consumers explained, “they often struggle with fresh avocados at home, as they go off very quickly which can result in food waste,” said Tesco frozen produce buyer, Marianne Aitken.

This is true, there is nothing worse than waiting patiently for an avocado to ripen and then in a split second they have become a gross brown alien. What on earth are those brown strings doing, someone tell us, please!

“They can also be a bit messy to prepare so we’ve not only frozen, but also peeled and halved them so they’re ready to use in salads, smoothies or guacamole.”

“Of course because they’re frozen from fresh all the nutrients are locked in through the freezing process.” Marianne added.

The avocados are fast frozen so texture is not impaired. This was a move that has been welcomed by waste advisory body Wrap. There is 54,000 tonnes of stone fruit related food waste each year, 32,000 tonnes of which is avoidable.

So say hello to world where 32,000 extra tonnes of guacamole is just waiting for you to enjoy. What a time to be alive.

When it comes to breakfast, the options are endless. But when you're stuck for time in the morning it can be hard to find something quick AND healthy to eat.

Many of us will either avoid (big no-no ladies) breakfast or eat something that's not exactly healthy (muffins, we're looking at you), so when a hectic mornings strike, these eight options will have your tummy full in no time:

1. Peanut butter and banana smoothie

Smoothies are the perfect on-the-go snack. Simply blend one frozen banana, two tablespoons of peanut butter, one cup of almond milk and a few ice cubes.

2. Zapped scrambled eggs with veggies

Yes, it's possible to make really good scrambled eggs in the microwave. All you need to do is beat two eggs and throw them in a microwave container. Add in a handful of your favourite veg and sprinkle with cheese. Microwave the mixture for 30 seconds, stir, and cook for another 30 seconds. A delicious meal in less than two minutes!

3. Fruit and yoghurt parfait

One of the easiest, healthiest and tastiest breakfasts out there is a classic fruit and yoghurt parfait. And the best bit? It can be topped with whatever fruit you like. Try choosing fruits that are in season to get the most flavour.

4. Breakfast burrito

Who doesn't love a burrito?! It will take about 10 minutes to make in the morning but if that's still pushing it, you can make it the night before. Scramble two egg white, 1/4 cup of black beans, two tablespoons of salsa and some shredded cheese. Wrap in a whole-wheat tortilla and you're good to go.

5. Leftovers and egg

Stuck with last night's leftover meat, veg and potatoes? Pop them in a microwave container and crack on egg on top. Heat in the microwave for 30-45 seconds and your breakfast is ready!

6. Overnight oats

This is the ultimate lazy person breakfast. The night before, combine 1/2 cup of milk, 1/3 cup of rolled oats, 1/2 banana and a handful of chopped nuts in a sealed container. By morning, you'll have delicious overnight oats. You can also heat the meal up in the microwave for a minute or two if you're in the mood for something warm.

7. Avocado toast with egg

Sometimes, simple is just better. Lightly toast two slices of wholegrain bread and top with smashed avocado and a sprinkle of salt and pepper. Top with two sunny-side-up eggs for a healthy dose of protein.

8. Fruity breakfast quinoa

Cooking quinoa in milk and adding some sweet spices and fruit is a great healthy substitute for classic hot breakfast cereals. Simply cook the quinoa in milk, add some cinnamon or nutmeg and top with fresh berries and chopped roasted nuts.

We all love our emojis, in fact, most of us use them in nearly every text or message we send – and soon there's going to be a lot more to choose from.

The Unicode Consortium, which oversees all of our emoji needs has just released a new batch of possible candidates, which you can view here

These 67 candidates will be voted on next May, and the approved ones will be released June 2016.

We've seen some of these emoji variations before, but for the most part there will be new faces, foods, hand gestures, animals and transportation devices.

For faces, we love the Pinocchino-inspired nose – perfect for when you catch your little sister lying!

There's also a rolling on the floor laughing face, a drooling face for when your favourite food blogger posts a new recipe and a sneezing face for when you have a cold!

There are also new animal options such as an owl, gorilla, rhino and shark.

Now, before we get too excited, these are just candidates and the designs we're seeing are just preliminary and might change – but the general idea of the emoji will remain the same.

We're just going to have to wait until next June to find out!

As we are massive avocado fans, we get quite excited any time there is a development in the world of our favourite snack item.

The mood is generally one of disappointment whenever we discover that we’ve, literally, scraped every last bit of fruity goodness from the peel.

However, as it turns out, we’ve been discarding the last of our avocados prematurely. We haven’t been eating the seeds!

Which actually seems more like a stone, to be honest, but that’s another discussion entirely.

One Green Planet are telling is that the seed is “where most of the fruit’s nutritional potential resides".

"The seed holds 70% of the avocado’s antioxidants, including the well-respected polyphenols associated with green tea," the site informs us.

“The oil within ups the amount of collagen in our skin, keeping it young and wrinkle-free, as well as shining up the hair so that we remain good-looking, too."

Sounds great. Also, the antioxidants to be found in the seed “help regulate intestinal function and have even been shown to prevent tumour growth.”

So, great hair, no bloating and all of the tasty goodness to satisfy your avocado obsession. It is almost too good to be true.

Almost, because one thing that struck us: how do you go about eating the stone?

According to the site, you can cut it into quarters and put it in a blender.

However, you have been warned that it may not a complete “miracle food”. One nutritionist told HuffPost Health that avocado seeds may not solve all your dietary problems but:

“If you want to eat it and benefit from a few extra nutrients, antioxidants and fibre, by all means do.”

If perhaps the avocado seed still isn’t looking all that appealing, then have no fear because there are plenty of other ways you can enjoy the green snack superhero.

So we may not be as crazy about avocado as someone like Miley Cyrus, but that does not mean we will turn our nose up at the chance to enjoy some new delicious recipes.

For example, have you ever tried to smoke an avocado? Well, you can and it is delicious, apparently it tastes just like bacon. Perfect for vegetarians who might miss the smoky fabulous flavour from time to time.

The main reason we are so excited about this one is also because it is very easy to do at home. Hurrah!

Buzzfeed caught up with chef Aaron London who rocks the man bun very well and makes amazing smoked avocado. Alright so maybe wood chips are not the most common item to be found in your kitchen, but if you’re feeling adventurous you can easily source some online.

Then all you need to do is pop some tin foil in the pot and throw the wood chips in there. After leaving them at a medium-high heat they should start to smoke, which can take a few minutes.

Then add the avocado and put the lid on the pot. Leave them for five minutes and then the magic happens. Smoked avocado for all. Yum.

You can smash your avocados, slice them for avocado toast or use your smoked avocado for some delicious guacamole. We think we might be tempted to try this soon.

As discussed previously, we’re a nation that just really loves our chips.

But potatoes aren’t the only foodstuff that can be fashioned into delicious slivers of golden goodness.

In fact, Irish pubs in the US are now championing a twist on the classic: namely avocado fries.

Oh. Yes. Please.

Crunchy on the outside; warm and creamy on the inside. Suffice to say that slices of avocado, breaded and deep-fried = heaven.

Here at SHEmazing! we think they’re particularly delicious when served with a zesty citrus, or a firey-hot chilli dipping sauce.

Ingredients:

  • Oil for frying
  • 2 avocados
  • 2 eggs
  • 80g of breadcrumbs
  • Zest of half a lemon
  • Black pepper
  • Salt
  • Ground cumin (about half a teaspoon)

Instructions:

  1. In a medium-sized bowl, mix together the bread crumbs with the lemon zest and cumin.
  2. Add salt and pepper to taste and set it aside.
  3. Beat the eggs together in a bowl and also then place aside.
  4. Cut the avocados in half and slice them vertically into chunky wedges (about 10cm long X 2.5cm wide).
  5. Heat the vegetable oil in a large frying pan (170C is ideal) – the oil should be 8-10cm deep so the avocado gets covered completely.
  6. Dredge the avocado slices in the breadcrumb mixture, then in the egg mixture, then back in the breadcrumb mixture again.
  7. Place them in the hot oil and fry them for about 2-3 minutes, or until golden brown.
  8. Remove with a slotted spoon or tongs, and set them on a plate lined with paper towels to absorb the excess oil.
  9. Allow them to dry for 10 minutes, then transfer to a serving tray and serve immediately.

Avocados are one of the most versatile fruits in the world and can be used in sweet and savoury dishes – though more commonly found in savoury.

Here are five simple ways you can use avocado!

1. In a smoothie
For a richer, creamier taste to your smoothie, add half an avocado! Not only will this add a dose of healthy fats to your smoothie but avocados are also known to contain a good amount of Vitamin C.

2. As a spread
If you’re looking for a healthy, plant-based alternative to butter, why not use avocado as a spread in your sandwiches, wraps or on toast?

3. As a pasta sauce
If you’re sick of tomato sauce on your pasta, avocado makes a great sauce base. Add an avocado to some chicken or veg stock and lemon juice along with some salt and pepper and then blend until smooth.

4. As a dessert
Once again, if you are trying to get a bit more plant power in your diet, avocados make the perfect base for a chocolatey pudding. Simply blend an avocado with some cocoa powder, vanilla extract, melted chocolate and maple syrup before placing in the fridge overnight. There you have it, the healthiest dessert in the world!

5. As a snack
For a fast and nutritious snack, simply half an avocado, add salt and pepper and eat! You could even try adding some chopped prawns or crab meat for a posh snack.
