Do you know that National Name Yourself Day falls on Easter Sunday, 9th April 2023 and it is a day to celebrate reinvention by trying a new name for size? To mark this unique day, My Nametags, www.mynametags.ie, undertook a special survey to discover Irish people’s thoughts on their birth name and to find out if they would change their name if given the opportunity….it turns out almost 14% of those surveyed would change their first name if they had the chance. The survey also uncovered some other interesting results:

Judged by your name….

The survey revealed that names really do play a major part in people’s perceptions with a surprisingly high 57% of those surveyed admitting that they had a negative first impression of someone they never met simply from their name! 45% also felt that other people had a certain perception of them because of their own first name.

Trendy or traditional?

When asked if their name was trendy, traditional or old fashioned, 41% revealed that they felt their name was traditional, while 30% felt that their name was outdated or old fashioned. 18% of those surveyed also thought that their name didn’t reflect their personality.

Favourite Popular Names

Not surprisingly the survey revealed the favourite girls name from the most popular names to be Emily (30%), followed closely by Grace (28%) and for boys the favourite boys names were James (32%) and Noah (25%).

Name Yourself….

As part of the survey, respondents were also asked to pick an alternative name that they would like to try out for size on National Name Yourself Day with a wide variety of names submitted with everything from traditional to trendy names featured including: Sadhbh, Alison, Cordelia, Mallory and Lulu for women and James, Ken, Ryan and Casey (thank you Love Island), quoted for men.

Commenting on National Name Yourself Day, Lars B. Andersen, Founder and Managing Director of My Nametags.ie, commented, “We are all about names at My Nametags so we were delighted to find out that a special day exists for people to try out a new first name just for fun! This quirky survey uncovered some interesting results on Irish people’s thoughts on their own names and also how people’s perceptions are quite often shaped by our names.”

Rob Lowe and his son have been marking milestones in their battles with addiction.

The Parks and Recreation star has spoken numerous times about his struggles with substance abuse, which began in the 1980s when his career took off.

Now, he has been showcasing his pride for his son John Owen Lowe (28), who has experienced his own battles with alcohol.

The father-and-son duo appeared on yesterday’s episode of The Drew Barrymore Show, to promote their new Netflix series Unstable.

During their conversation, presenter Drew opened up about her struggles with alcoholism.

“I've been really honest with my kids who are younger, but they know my story, they know I can't drink, it's not for me, it doesn't work for me,” the 48-year-old explained.

“They know my pitfalls and you guys are an incredible family unit that support each other through every high and low,” she praised further.

Rob agreed with Drew’s comments, before he turned to his youngest child.

“I have 33 years in recovery,” the 59-year-old shared. “Johnny's got five years in and in fact, Johnny's five-year birthday was on Saturday and, Johnny, I want to give you your five-year chip.”

The West Wing star then took out the blue chip and presented it to his son. “I love you, I'm proud of you, buddy,” he gushed, before the pair shared a sweet hug.

John Owen couldn’t hold back his emotions following the heartfelt gesture. “That's so sweet. Speechless. I usually have a witty retort, I don't have one for that. That was very nice of you,” he beamed.

John Owen opened up earlier this month in an interview with Men’s Health, in which he recalled how his parents encouraged him towards sobriety.

“It's like I was drowning and they were slamming me on the head with the life raft. Because my feelings were that I didn't matter, and a lot of that stemmed from having the dad that I had,” he detailed.

“Finally the thing that worked was when they said, ‘We love you and we're scared,’” he admitted.

Here's what you need to know about a Abdominoplasty

After losing a lot of weight, you might be considering a tummy tuck – and if you are, there are things you need to consider.

Abdominoplasty, also known as a tummy tuck, is done after weight changes and where you are left with excess skin. It’s one of the most popular body transformation procedures, with nearly 140,000 tummy tucks performed each year in the US. Canada is also following a similar upward trend as more and more people are getting cosmetic procedures done, according to the Canadian Institute for Health Information.

The surgery is aimed at removing excess skin and fat from the belly, and it’s often done by sewing together weakened and separated abdominal muscles. The result is a smoother and more even tummy.

If you’re drawn to the idea of getting a tummy tuck but don’t know which would be the best procedure for you, we’ll look at the most common forms of this surgery so you can determine which choice may be the right for you.

Full Tummy Tuck

A tummy tuck is the most common surgical procedure for people who have recently lost a lot of weight. A full tummy tuck focuses on the midsection of the abdomen and is a good option for those who are still dealing with loose skin, stretched muscles, or excess abdominal fat. A full tummy tuck can reduce the patient's waistline by two to four inches.

In a full tummy tuck procedure, the incision is made from one hip to the other below the navel. Next, the surgeon separates the flap of skin and fat from the underlying muscles. The entire flap must be separated and lifted as far as the ribs. In addition, the doctor makes an incision around the navel. Once this is done, the surgeon stitches the abdominal muscles together to make your belly firmer and flatter. Then he pulls down the skin flap and removes the excess of these tissues. A new navel is formed and finally, the incision is closed.

Although the full tummy tuck is among the most common interventions in both private and public care, it’s essential to find a board-certified plastic surgeon. So, if you live in Toronto, for instance, you should search for a tummy tuck Toronto-based medical professional and schedule an initial consultation visit. By choosing a qualified abdominoplasty specialist, you’ll be able to ensure that you achieve the desired result.

Mini Tummy Tuck

Mini tummy tucks are the best option for patients with good skin in the upper abdomen and good muscle tone. The procedure focuses on problem areas in the lower abdomen, for instance, excess fat and loose skin below the navel.

A mini tummy tuck is performed by making a small incision at the bikini line, approximately 4–8 inches. The incision may allow for the removal of a small amount of excess skin. A surgeon may also perform liposuction to target specific areas of fat. Sometimes, tightening the lower abdominal muscles is possible. Ultimately, a small number of tummy tuck candidates find that a mini tummy tuck is the best option for achieving their desired goals.

Extended Tummy Tuck

Extended tummy tucks are a great option for patients with excess skin that extends to the sides of the abdomen.

In an extended tummy tuck procedure, the surgeon will make a horizontal incision from hip to hip and outward to include the flank and lower back areas. While this is more similar to the full tummy tuck procedure, you need to keep in mind that it is more invasive and allows for more significant amounts of loose skin to be removed.

Flankplasty

Patients with more excess skin in their abdomen or trunk, especially along the flank and lateral trunk regions, are best suited for flankplasty surgery. The procedure is very similar to a full tummy tuck, except that it only requires one incision on the lower torso. The incision for flankplasty is longer and extends three-quarters around the lower torso.

A flankplasty can be performed to effectively correct a sagging abdomen and flanks.

Reverse Tummy Tuck

Sometimes patients may have a toned lower abdomen and excess skin on their upper abdomen. This patient may be eligible for a reverse stomach tuck which targets the upper abdomen.

To remove excess skin and fat from the top of the torso, a surgeon makes an incision at the bra line. Reverse tummy tucks can be performed along with a breast lift procedure.

Choosing the best type of tummy tuck procedure mostly depends on which part of the abdominal area is bothering you. If the lower part of the abdomen requires correction, a mini tummy tuck may be the right choice. However, if the problem area is above the navel, a full tummy tuck might be needed.

Carefully select the procedure that's right for your body and make sure to discuss it first with an expert plastic surgeon.

Bank of Ireland is warning about an escalating wave of fraudulent text messages, with fraudsters pretending to be a motorway operator and sending messages urging customers to pay outstanding toll charges or update account details. The website links in these messages are not genuine and are an attempt to collect personal card and online banking details.

The Bank is currently seeing a large spike in motorway-themed smishing, and is warning customers to be particularly wary with more commuters hitting the roads this Easter weekend.

Discussing the latest wave, Nicola Sadlier, Head of Fraud, Bank of Ireland said: “Smishing attacks tend to come in waves, and the latest theme is motorway fraud, where fraudsters are sending fake text purportedly from operators such as eFlow. When you click on the text it leads to a fake website where some will end up providing their confidential card and bank account details. As more people will be hitting the roads this Easter weekend, they might be more inclined to click on such a text message thinking it is legitimate.

“In the past we have seen similar waves of fraudulent messages appearing to be from delivery services, Government agencies or banks and now it seems that motorway smishing is trending. Text messages should be treated with extreme caution – the general rule is never trust, always verify.”

Bank of Ireland’s advice to customers in response to the current smishing scam:

  • Do not click on links or respond to SMS text messages which appear as if sent by a motorway toll operator looking for payment for an unpaid toll;
  • Remember that companies such as these, or banks, delivery companies, utility providers and Government agencies will never send a text linking to a website that requests online banking details;
  • eFlow has advised anyone who receives a text message regarding unpaid tolls to ignore the message and not to open any links. eFlow does not ask customers to open any links to confirm payment details;
  • Verify the identity of the sender. Call the company using their legitimate phone number (ensure you source it independently of any SMS);
  • If you get a suspicious text, please email a screenshot of the text to 365Security@boi.com and then delete the text

Bank of Ireland customers who think they gave away their banking details should call our 24/7 Freephone line 1800 946 764 immediately.

Irish residents are expected to recycle over 60,900 tonnes of packaging waste this Easter. The weekend marks one of the busiest times of the year for waste recovery operators across the country.

New research of 1,000 adults in Ireland was carried out by environmental not-for-profit organisation Repak, to examine the nation’s Easter spending habits as well as awareness of what packaging can be recycled. Since 2021, all plastics can go into the recycling bin, which research reveals 43% of those surveyed were still unaware of.

Chocolate comes out on top, but alternative gifts are on the rise

Easter eggs remain the gift of choice for 62% of people, but 35% of people plan to buy alternative gifts for others this year – up from 22% last year**. Toys come out on top for those looking to buy alternative gifts (30%), followed by a card (23%), baked goods or other confectionery (21%), handmade gifts (17%), and a hamper (14%).

For the traditionalists, 32% of people plan to buy five or more eggs. 30% of people plan to buy between 1-3, while almost a quarter (24%) plan to buy between 3-5 eggs. When it comes to spending, 60% plan to spend the same as they did in previous years. 32% plan to spend between €21-40, and 31% plan to spend between €10-20 on Easter eggs.

88% admit that recyclable packaging is not the most important factor when it comes to deciding what Easter egg to buy. What’s most important is the type of chocolate (51%), followed by the size of the egg (19%) and whether it comes with a gift like a branded mug or additional bars (17%).

Milk chocolate remains the most popular choice

Milk chocolate is the most popular Easter egg people hope to receive this year (78%), followed by white chocolate (18%), dark chocolate (17%) and plant-based or vegan (4%). Almost a third (29%) expect to receive two eggs, while one in five (22%) expect to receive one. 10% expect to receive four eggs, and 5% expect to receive eight or more eggs.

And if we forget?

More than a third (36%) admit to having forgotten to buy an Easter egg for a loved one in the past. To make it up to them, 44% spent a little more than they normally would, and 28% spent a lot more. When it came to the weekend itself, 44% had to buy alternative gifts because chocolate eggs had sold out in the shops, while 23% opted for alternative cards, and 24% said they had to buy their gifts at a later date.

How are you spending your Easter?

This Easter, it’s all about spending time with loved ones, with 92% of people saying quality time spent with family is more important than receiving gifts, according to the research. It’s also a time for indulgence, with 74% saying healthy eating will take a back seat in favour of sweet treats.

This Easter, 94% say they will make a conscious effort to recycle Easter packaging correctly, and Repak is encouraging the public to make sure they recycle all plastics and packaging from Easter eggs and gifts. Cardboard boxes, plastic moulds and clean tin foil are just some of the many items households will see pile up over the Easter weekend that can all go into the recycling bin once clean, dry, and loose.

Ireland currently recycles 33% of all plastics, but that needs to increase to 50% by 2025 to achieve the ambitious plastic recycling targets the EU has set for coming years. By recycling correctly this Easter, the public can help Ireland reach the goal and help us live in a Circular Economy

For more recycling hints and tips, join Repak Team Green and pledge to recycle more and better. It takes just two minutes to join Repak Team Green at www.repak.ie/team-green/join/
