As word landed this week that the Irish nation would finally be granted a referendum on the hugely contentious 8th amendment, thoughts travelled to the women who have already fallen victim to a system which refused to grant them bodily autonomy.

Indeed, today marks the 34th anniversary of 15-year-old Ann Lovett, who died from a post-partum haemorrhage after delivering her baby son alone in a grotto in Granard, Co Longford.

Ann's death in 1984 has subsequently acted as a symbol of a system which refused to place trust in its women, and today the Irish public are seeking to remember her bravery.

"Like many names and faces we know & will never know, she was betrayed by a culture that shamed and punished young unmarried pregnant women," wrote one Twitter user this morning.

Echoing this sentiment, many more used their platforms to pay tribute to the school girl who gave birth on a dark, cold night beneath a statue of the Virgin Mary.

Whether you've always wanted to pursue your dream career or just want to add an educational edge to your repertoire of skills – going to college is never a bad idea.

Fancy spicing up your life with some further education?

Then you better act fast.

Tomorrow is the closing date for CAO applications, so if you're planning on throwing your hat into the ring, now would be the time.

This date is the cut off point for entry to all first-year undergraduate courses.

If you list your chosen courses and then change your mind, don't despair.

If you need more time to mull the decision over, applicants can modify their course selection up until July 1, though for some programmes that is not allowed.

Dr Derek O'Byrne from Waterford Institute of Technology shared some sage advice with BreakingNews.ie for all those applying with the CAO.

'It’s a difficult process, there are a lot of choices available to people,' he noted.

'What’s really important though is that they pick programmes that very much suit their skill-sets and their interests.'

'If people pick a programme that they’re interested in, and that they enjoy, they’re much more likely to do well in that programme,' he said.

Actress Kirsten Dunst has at long last set the record straight about those pregnancy rumours in the most glamorous way possible: through an ad campaign.

The mum-to-be posed for fashion line Rodarte's Fall Winter 2018 portrait series of inspirational women.

Rodarte is run by two sisters, Kate and Laura Mulleavy, and we could see why they'd take inspiration from Kirsten.

We adore this first photo, where the radiant 35-year-old looks like Mother Nature.

This will be Kirsten and her fiancé Jesse Plemons' (of The Post fame) first child. According to E! News, the Mulleavy sisters are designing her wedding dress.

We are so thrilled for them! Between the impending nuptials and a baby on the way, this must be such an exciting time for the couple.

When asking Kirsten's representative about the photos, The Los Angeles Times received the simple reply, 'The photos speak for themselves.'

Instagram users were ecstatic to find that The Beguiled star had finally confirmed her pregnancy.

'Truly beautiful…So happy for all of you,' a fan commented.

Farmers in the UK claim they fear for their well-being after receiving death threats from abusive vegan activists.

The Telegraph reports that meat industry groups have made contact with anti-terrorism police to discuss how to manage the growing problem, which is said to have become more intense over the last few months.

Norman Bagley, of the Association of Independent Meat Suppliers, said: “The activists over the past 18 months have become much more violent.”

"We've had situations of activists lying down in front of lorries, holding their children up to pig wagons, which is irresponsible whichever way you look at it."

According to the paper, many farmers have reported feeling "distressed" after activists broke into their yards to film their animals during the night.

Alison Waugh, a trainee farmer in Northumberland accused some animal-rights campaigners of "overstepping the mark".

"When you're being called murderers and rapists, that is overstepping the mark, for fairly obvious reasons," she said.

Lead activist Joey Carbstron, who denies being an extremist, says there is “no evidence” to suggest farmers are being threatened.

Speaking to The Independent, he insisted that farmers were "playing the victim".

“The farmers are playing the victim in this scenario, they are completely disregarding the fact that they have animals on the land that are being sent to the slaughterhouse,” he told The Independent.

“I bet the pigs can’t sleep at night either in their overcrowded conditions, after their piglets have been forcibly removed and facing death inside a gas chamber.”

Veganism has seen an unprecedented growth in popularity over the past few years, and those figures are only expected to rise throughout the coming years.
