Yearly Archives: 2016

After the campaign to let Irish pubs to stay open on Good Friday this year, Minister Frances Fitzgerald has decided to NOT lift the ban.

She told RTE today that she "won't be doing it this year," but then continued to say that there's hope in the future as the alcohol legislation will be revised.

The Licensed Vintners Association (LVA) said that they are all disappointed by the minister's outcome to change the law this year.

"This is a lost opportunity not just for publicans but for the capital city and the tourist sector as a whole," said LVA's chief executive Donall O'Keeffe.

"Once again thousands of tourists and holiday goers are going to be at a loss wondering why they can’t go to a pub for a drink."

There's always next year, lads!

Last night, along with a long list of celebs, Justin Bieber attended J Lo's first residency concert in Las Vegas.

But, he had a little bit of an accident while he was leaving at the end of the show.

While he was trying to make his way through the crowds, he tripped and stumbled over a rather large suitcase.

He then proceeded to look very grumpy about it and picked up the suitcase, only to throw it on the seat in front of him. Ouch.

You sure don't like being embarrassed, Justin.

Since the Oscar nominations were announced, there was a lot of controversy surrounding them, especially with Jada Pinkett Smith.

Will Smith's wife made a public video about how she wants fellow actors to boycott the award show, since her husband, and other black actors got overlooked in the nominations.

Some thought she was right to voice her views, and others thought she was wrong. Will's ex Fresh Prince co-star, Janet Hubert, even made another video to say what she felt about Jada's views.

But now, Will Smith himself has stepped up and revealed what he really thinks.

"I was knocked over. I was happy to be married to that woman but I appreciated the push," he told Robin Roberts on Good Morning America.

"There's a position that we hold in this community and, if were not a part of the solution, we're a part of the problem."

And even though the Oscars president said she was disappointed in the outcome, Will said that he still won't be attending the show.

"My wife's not going. It would be awkward to show up with Charlize Theron. We've discussed it and we're part of this community, but at this current time, we're uncomfortable to stand there and say, 'This is OK.'"

Do you think he's making a mistake?

He's been the unlikely star of Netflix's true crime documentary Making A Murderer, with a love of dad jeans that has even inspired a dedicated Tumblr page.

And this weekend Dean Strang will be arriving on Irish soil, for a just-confirmed appearance on The Ray D'Arcy Show this Saturday Jan 23.

The Wisconsin defence attorney will appear on the show to chat about Steven's case (we hope), and most likely his love of hurling – many Irish viewers got a kick out of spotting a GAA-themed statue in Strang's office:

"I’ve never been to a hurling game," Strang told The Irish Sun of the statue, given to him by an Irish-American friend.

"I’ve never been to Ireland, notwithstanding the 25 per cent of my genome rooted in your soil."

Never been to Ireland? Someone roll out the red carpet at Dublin Airport, this is going to be a VERY exciting weekend.

Ariana Grande's Viva Glam collection for MAC has had beauty fanatics in a flutter since it was first teased last year, and it's finally about to go on sale here.

The 22-year-old singer took over from Miley Cyrus this year as the new face of MAC's charity cosmetics collection, launching two new products.

Ariana's Viva Glam Lipstick is an intensely dark matte purple, while her Viva Glam LipGlass is a light shimmering pink. According to MAC, the collection is a nod to every girl's "good" and "bad" side.

Both lippies have just today gone on sale in the UK, but they're not available for purchase in Ireland just yet. Don't worry though, you won't have long to wait.

Here's what we know so far…

When you can buy them
The Ariana Grande Viva Glam collection will go on sale in Irish stores on February 4, with an RRP of €20 for the Viva Glam Lipstick and €19 for the Viva Glam LipGlass.

Where you can buy them
Ariana's collection will be available for Irish beauty queens exclusively at MAC counters in Brown Thomas and BT2 stores, or online at brownthomas.com

Where your hard-earned cash is going
Like Miley's campaign last year, all the proceeds (after VAT) from Ariana's products will go towards helping adults and children living with and affected by HIV/AIDS.

Last year, the whole doppelganger craze totally blew up around the world, with many people discovering strangers that look EXACTLY like them.

Niamh Geaney, of twinstranger.com, has so far found three women with very similar features to herself, and in her latest quest, she has decided to carry out a DNA test to see if they are indeed, related.

Niamh and her doppelganger, Irene, took swabs of their saliva and sent them off to the labs to be tested. The results are in – and let's just say you may be a bit surprised.

The debut of the penultimate episode of Girls is only a few weeks away, and if the trailer is anything to go by, it's going to be FAB.

The four ladies seem to be moving on with their lives (kinda), but either way, we're guaranteed lots of laughs.

What we can guess from this trailer is that Hannah is finally on the way to accepting her body. Shoshanna is living it up in Japan, Marnie is sad (who would have guessed?), and Jessa is rolling out the practical advice to all of her BFFs.

AND, one of the best things is that Adam Driver is back in all of his furious glory. It was rumoured that he quit the show after becoming a Star Wars phenomenon, but alas, he's here to stay.

There has been an uprise of dating shows on TV lately (becaue they're the best thing ever), and it's safe to say that everyone LOVES First Dates.

But, there's a new show airing tonight on Channel 4 and it takes a rather different approach.

The ladies that are looking for love are leaving it up to their children to find a potential partner – and we just think it's the best idea ever

On tonight's episode you will meet 39-year-old Katie, who is on the quest to find a new man after her 12-year relationship broke up.

Her sons, Jay, 21, and Harry, 15, go on the hunt to get Katie a new beau, with Katie revealing, "they know me better than I know myself."

Jay and Harry also admit that they're surprised that their mam hasn't found love as they say, "look at her she's beautiful!"

We'll guess we'll have to watch tonight at 10pm to see if Jay and Harry are successful.

Demi Lovato has confessed that she was once told by producers to alter her appearance before she went on to make it big on the Disney Channel.

The 23-year-old star told Allure Magazine this week that she was told to fix the gap in her front teeth when she was just fifteen before being being cast in the smash movie Camp Rock alongside the Jonas Brothers.

"I signed with Disney Channel when I got Camp Rock, and I had a gap between my two front teeth.

"They were like, 'Would you be willing to fix it?' I wish today that I hadn't, because my gap was really cute."

Demi went on to have problems with bulimia and self harming before going to rehab in her early twenties.

"I realised I could help people. It creates a conversation — there's an opening for children themselves to actually come forward and say, 'This is what I'm dealing with.' Or 'I have a problem. I need help.' "

Despite going public with her issues, it has not been plain sailing for the Confident singer.

"I'll have people who are like, 'Stop talking about eating disorders. Like, we get it. You struggled. Now shut up.' "

"I [also] started wearing sexier stuff, and I got some hate for that — like, 'You've changed.' "

But Demi has certainly come to terms with her own body image as she posted a gorgeous full body selfie from the set of her Allure shoot.

"Posting a #nophotoshop pic because I'm proud to show my body the way it naturally is…" read the caption.

We think Demi has never looked healthier or happier.

It seems like Keeping Up With The Kardashians star, Scott Disick is back to his old ways.

The 32-year-old has reportedly been club-hopping all week, according to RadarOnline.

A source close to the Kardashian family has also revealed that he has not attended any of his outpatient rehab appointments, and they believe this could be the beginning of another downward spiral.

The father-of-three has been partying it up with rapper Chris Brown over the past few weeks, and it has landed him in hot water with Kourtney.

"The family all believes that he is headed for another relapse. His behaviour lately is incredibly defiant.

"Scott should not be going out to clubs and bars. It is just a matter of time now," the source added.

"I had never even heard the word 'Lyme,'" Denise Ryan says of life before her diagnosis.

The 31-year old Dubliner was living and working in Canada when she first started noticing some strange symptoms around four years ago.

"I was throwing up all day, I couldn't see properly, I was confused and had heart palpitations," she says.

Lyme Disease, which is contracted from a tick bite, has gained a lot of press over the last 12 months as celebrities like Avril Lavigne and Yolanda Foster share their stories, but back in 2011 and 2012, it wasn't quite so well-known.

As it took so long for Denise's illness to be diagnosed, she has been left with a number of life-threatening issues, from pneumonia, gastroparesis, Lyme arthritis, severe osteoporosis and muscle wasting to many bacterial, fungal, and viral infections.

Last summer Denise successfully travelled to Seattle for three months to undergo treatment from specialist doctors there, after raising tens of thousands through her first crowdfunding campaign, 3,000 Tenners. However far more treatment and time is needed for Denise to really get the help she needs.

"I'm so weak after being sick for so long that my immune system is completely disabled and a lot of opportunistic infections have developed so I'll need a long time of very intensive care and monitoring," she explains.

If you want to help Denise, you can donate via her second campaign page, 10,000 Tenners

"Looking at it like needing 10,000 tenners (€10/$10/£10) makes it seem a little more possible," she says.

You can also help to raise funds by supporting Denise on Etsy, where she's selling this undeniably brilliant Pat Mustard tee:
