Marilyn Monroe

The nude embellished dress that Marilyn Monroe wore to sing Happy Birthday to John F. Kennedy is going up for auction.

The infamous Julien's Auctions is offering the dress on November 17, where they believe it will be sell for around $3m (€2.7m).

At the time Marilyn wore the dress, it was considered very daring (think Kate Moss' naked 90s get-up) and she even had to be sewn into it.

Ms Monroe passed away less than three months after her Happy Birthday performance, and President Kennedy died a year later.

The dress will be showcased at the Museum of Style Icons in Newbridge before it's November selling date.

When it comes to defining the eternal allure of old Hollywood glamour, no woman has made more of an impact than Marilyn Monroe.

As proof, look no further than Lifetime’s The Secret Life of Marilyn Monroe, which has been nominated for three Emmys—including, of course, best hair and makeup.

We break down the iconic actresses own words, to give you all the captivating secrets behind the star's beauty.

“Despite its great vogue in California, I don’t think suntanned skin is any more attractive . . . or any healthier, for that matter. I’m personally opposed to a deep tan because I like to feel blonde all over."

“In Hollywood, a girl’s virtue is much less important than her hairdo.”

“You know, they ask me questions. Just an example: What do I wear to bed? . . . So I said, ‘Chanel No. 5,’ because it’s the truth!”

“I don’t count rhythmically like the exercise people on the radio; I couldn’t stand exercise if I had to feel regimented about it.”

She captured everyone's attention when, at the age of 16, she married 51-year-old Hollywood actor Doug Hutchison in an intimate ceremony in Las Vegas.

Now aged 20 – and still with Doug despite several temporary splits along the way – Courtney Stodden has overhauled her appearance.

Once an aspiring pop-star, she has more recently stated that she believes acting is where her talents lie – and certainly her Instagram account proves she is a huge fan of Marilyn Monroe's style and appearance.

However, while Marilyn was curvy, Courtney's breasts are entirely OTT. In fact, they appeared bigger than ever in one post made – and then swiftly deleted – earlier this week.

Wearing a light chiffon shirt and pouting for the camera while holding a pink smoothie, Ms Stodden's chest seems disproportionately large; something which wasn't lost on commentators who spotted the snap before it was removed.

Shortly after her marriage, the reality TV contestant denied that she'd had plastic surgery – insisting that she was entirely natural. However, two years ago at the age of 18 she decided on a breast augmentation to further boost her bust.

Eventually opting for a DD cup – a significant increase given her petite height (she's 5ft 4in) and slight frame – her husband fully supported her decision.

However, if her recent Instagram posts are anything to go by and she has indeed gone under the knife again, this time seemingly choosing an even larger cup size.

TMZ reported earlier this year that the young woman was shopping a sex tape to the highest bidder.

Described as a "solo effort porn video," in it Ms Stodden can be seen in a bubble bath splashing in water.

Mr Hutchinson does not appear in the footage, which was eventually released on several adult entertainment sites.

She and her husband split after just two years of marriage, with Courtney reporting that she wanted to "experience other men," but they reconciled last year and have said that they plan to renew their vows shortly.

Style icons such as James Dean and Marilyn Monroe feature too – as do Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake, who infamously wore matching, all-denim attire to the 2001 American Music Awards.

Plus, there are lots of interesting facts and figures to devour. For example, denim sales increased by an astonishing 800 percent during the Eighties, and the industry will be worth €86.5bn by 2020.

Did you know that it was Mr. Max Factor that was responsible for transforming Marilyn Monroe into the woman she is revered as to this day. So how did he transform her from an ordinary girl into a glamour puss? Niamh Geaney went along to meet Max Factor's uber-talented Make-up Artist Lyndsey Cavanagh to find out what products we can use to achieve this Hollywood starlet look.

Marilyn Monroe died 53 years ago today at only 36-years-old, but her famous blonde hair and red lipstick look has never gone out of style. Here is a handful of stars who have tried to recreate the look – though we’re not sure if anyone will ever pull it off as well as Marilyn herself!

Gwen Stefani
The singer admitted that she is such a fan of the late star, that she found out how often she did her roots: “I do my roots as often as Marilyn Monroe did hers. I'm serious. I found out.”

Christina Aguilera
Christina has had some ker-AZY hairstyles over the years, but our favourite has to be her platinum blonde hair with red lipstick.

Michelle Williams
The actress portrayed Marilyn in the film My Week With Marilyn, and we don’t think they could have chosen anyone better to play the role. She looked amazing!

Lady Gaga
Lady Gaga dressed up as Marilyn to celebrate the actress’s birthday in 2011 and shared the photo on Twitter saying: “Happy birthday, Marilyn. They'll never take our blonde hair and lipstick.”

In her music video for ‘Pour It Up’, Rihanna dressed up as Marilyn. Her song ‘Love Without Tragedy’ also pays tribute to the star with the lyrics: “Red lipstick, rose petals, heartbreak, I was his Marilyn Monroe.”

There’s been speculation for months, as to whether or not Rita would be the new face for Roberto Cavalli’s campaign.

But the designer finally put things to rest yesterday, when he posted new images of the singer  on their Facebook page

Rita is seen wearing some of the designer’s gorgeous gowns from his new collection. The pictures were taken in New York by Italian photographer, Francesco Carrozzini.

The 23-year-old shared her excitement on Instagram about her new Cavalli campaign on Instagram: “This collaboration is a huge honor.”

In 1952, Marilyn Monroe gave Pageant magazine an exclusive interview and it seems the iconic actress was well ahead of her time in terms of diet and exercising.

Just like the rest of us, the blonde beauty worried “about eating too much” and not working out enough. Talking to the magazine, Marilyn confessed to spending “10 minutes each morning working out with small weights” and admitted to a high protein diet that she served with vegetables.

And it wasn’t just diet and exercise that Marilyn was on top of – she was sun smart too! Despite tanned skin being all the trend in California at the time, Marilyn wasn’t a sun worshipper, saying : “Despite its great vogue in California, I don’t think sun-tanned skin is any more attractive than white skin, or any healthier, for that matter. I’m personally opposed to a deep tan because I like to feel blond all over.”

However , she did have a few strange heath regimes like her warm milk and egg drink being one of them.

In the interview, the actress said: “Before I take my morning shower, I start warming a cup of milk on the hot plate I keep in my hotel room. When it’s hot, I break two raw eggs into the milk, whip them up with a fork, and drink them while I’m dressing. I supplement this with a multi-vitamin pill, and I doubt if any doctor could recommend a more nourishing breakfast for a working girl in a hurry.”

Over sixty years later, Marilyn is still as iconic as ever, so she was definitely doing something right.

This summer, Newbridge Silverware will be showcasing a set of earrings worn by Marilyn Monroe at the premier of The Rose Tattoo in 1955, alongside Marlon Brando.

The earrings will be in the Museum of Style Icons, alongside a number of Marilyn’s other possessions, such as a pink Pucci dress, and the coat she wore in the 1957 movie, the Prince and the Showgirl.

The museum is free to visit and open seven days a week,so it’s the perfect girls’ day out!

It doesn’t look like the red lip is going to go anywhere – it has just been voted most iconic beauty trend of all time.

However, the results of the poll by Superdrug, doesn’t really surprise us to be honest.

The red lip was made famous by the likes of Marilyn Monroe and is still an incredibly popular trend to this day. It suits (almost!) everyone and is a great way to make a dramatic impact.

The poll asked 2,000 women to rank their iconic beauty looks according to their preference and while bright red lipstick came out on top, smoky eyes came in a close second, with false eyelashes following not too far behind.

Other beauty looks to feature on the list included fake tan at number four, prominent contouring at 17 and pink blusher at 20.

Talking about the results, a Superdrug spokesperson said: “It’s fascinating that we return time and time again to the classic beauty looks. This research shows us that the power of a fabulous red lip remains one of women’s favourite and most dramatic beauty looks.”
