A new study has discovered that many healthy people took unsafe levels of vitamin D as a result of a myth during the Covid pandemic.

The research, which was ordered by Athena Pharmaceuticals, found that Irish people who are taking excessive amounts of vitamin D supplements are putting their bones at risk.

1,000 people took part in the study, the questions for which were designed by Dr Miriam Delaney, a specialist in osteoporosis, metabolic bone disorders and calcium metabolism at the Galway Clinic.

The data uncovered that 35% of over-40s, men and women, now have a potential risk of osteoporosis, after suffering a broken bone from a simple fall.

The study also discovered that 22% of adults have broken or fractured a bone since they turned 40 years of age. Among these, 35% reported that it was a fragility fracture, meaning that the bone was already weak before the incident occurred.

Dr Delaney explained that this high figure amongst a younger age group is a concerning one. “We would expect it to be higher in the older age-groups. It would be worrying, and it is interesting because it is not what we expect.”

Dr Delaney then shared that the research uncovered that Covid myths surrounding vitamin D are still having an impact on people’s health.

“There was this question of 3,000 units of vitamin D helping prevent people getting Covid, which wasn’t shown to be true,” she insisted. “We have a lot of patients still taking in excess of 3,000 units a day, and they have toxic levels of vitamin D when you check it.”

Experts say that a healthy level of Vitamin D is above 50 in the metric used for measurement. However, Dr Delaney admitted that many are seeing figures higher than that.

“We are seeing people coming with levels of 180 or 200,” she shared. “If you have a very high vitamin D level, and you are taking lots of calcium, you can become hypercalcemic, so your bloods can become abnormal.”

Although the statistics are worrying, Dr Delaney confirmed that the study's findings have been educational.

John Travolta honoured his late Grease co-star Olivia Newton-John while at the Oscars last night.

The 95th Academy Awards held a moving ‘In Memoriam’ segment for actors and filmmakers that had sadly passed away over the past year, and with John introducing the piece, he paid tribute to the late Olivia Newton-John.

Travolta began, “In this industry, we have the rare luxury of getting to do what we love for a living, and sometimes getting to do it with people that we come to love”.

“Since tonight is a celebration of the work and the accomplishments of our community and this past year, it is only fitting then that we celebrate those we've lost who've dedicated their lives to their craft, both in front of and behind the camera”.

The 69-year-old continued, “Through their immeasurable contributions, each of them left an individual and indelible mark that shared and informed us".

“They've touched our hearts. They've made us smile, and became dear friends who we will always remain hopelessly devoted to”, John added before becoming emotional.

Other late stars that were included in the touching tribute video included Harry Potter’s Robbie Coltrane, Cheers star Kirstie Alley, Ray Liotta from Goodfellas and Fame star Irene Cara.

Lenny Kravitz also performed his 2004 song Calling All Angels for the emotional segment.

Olivia tragically passed away at the age of 73 in August 2022 after battling breast cancer over the span of three decades.

After the actress’ passing, John shared a tribute for her on Instagram that read, “My dearest Olivia, you made all of our lives so much better. Your impact was incredible”.

“I love you so much. We will see you down the road and we will all be together again. Yours from the first moment I saw you and forever! Your Danny, your John!”.

Meryl Streep has a new acting gig!

Fans of the iconic Hollywood actress were delighted last night when they received a first glimpse at her new role.

The 73-year-old will be starring in the third season of the hit Disney+ series, Only Murders in the Building. Her casting was first announced in January, when Selena Gomez teased fans with an on-set video introducing the Mamma Mia! actress.

In celebration of the Academy Awards ceremony last night, the team behind the comedy-drama decided to treat fans to an early glimpse into its new season.

The short teaser trailer showcases the series’ three main characters – Charles (Steve Martin), Oliver (Martin Short) and Mabel (Selena Gomez) – as they once again prepare to solve a mysterious death through their true crime podcast.

This time, the deceased is Ben Glenroy, Charles’ rival co-star, who dies unexpectedly on stage during the opening night of Oliver’s new play. Excitingly, the murder victim will be played by Hollywood actor Paul Rudd, a new addition to the already star-studded cast.

The teaser shows our favourite trio buzzing as they realise they have another case to solve.

“Is this really happening again?” Oliver exclaims, as Mabel sarcastically replies, “Well, you know, who are we without a homicide?”

In the short trailer’s final moments, Meryl Streep’s character is revealed, and it appears as though she is also playing a role in Oliver’s play.

“Oh, my God! It’s me. Oh, I am so sorry,” Meryl’s character laughs, seemingly not paying attention to her lines during a script table read.

Hilariously, the social media team behind OMITB decided to pay homage in their caption to Meryl’s famous role in The Devil Wears Prada.

“Murders? In the building? Groundbreaking,” they joked. “Meryl Streep joins Only Murders in the Building Season 3.”

Fans couldn’t help but delight in the first look at Meryl’s character.

“I’m so happy and excited and psyched for this. MERYL is back,” one Twitter user gushed.

“MERYL AND MURDERS IN THE BUILDING!! can’t wait for this,” another added.

A release date for OMITB season 3 has yet to be announced, as it appears as though it is still in production. However, fans have been promised that the new season will be “coming soon” – and we can’t wait!

Dancing on Ice drew to a close last night and fans of the skating show have shared their delight at the final decision as Olympian Nile Wilson was crowned as champion alongside his partner Olivia Smart.

The final saw the pair battle it out against The Only Way is Essex star Joey Essex who skated with his partner Vanessa Bauer, and RuPaul’s Drag Race’s The Vivienne skating with her pro skater Colin Grafton.

After impressive skating from all three couples as they all performed their own individual routines, they were all awarded full marks from the judges- 40 points to each couple.

But, after taking part in a skate-off where all couples took to the ice at the same time, The Vivienne and Colin Grafton were the first pair to be eliminated.

That left Joey and Vanessa, and Nile and Olivia to battle it out as they skated to Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean’s iconic Olympic Bolero routine.

In the end, Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby announced the public vote’s decision which resulted in Nile and Olivia winning, leaving the pair shocked and overjoyed.

Fans wasted no time in sharing their delight in the decision, with many commenting under Dancing on Ice’s most recent Instagram post that revealed the great news.

“So so well deserved Nile and Olivia absolutely amazing every week”, wrote one fan, while a second said, “My winner from the start. So pleased for them both”.

“Well done Nile and Olivia, from your first skate I just really hoped (and knew) that you would win. Your Bolero gave me goosebumps and made me so emotional”, penned another viewer of the show.

A fourth added, “Congratulations, absolutely deserved it as they were incredible. But well done to Joey and the Vivienne too”.

Not only do they taste so great you'll want to devour the whole batch in one go, but they also freeze well too. Such a simple recipe which is sure to satisfy that sweet tooth craving every single time.

Ingredients:

150g pitted soft dates, chopped

115g lightly salted butter, softened

75g dark brown sugar

1 large egg, beaten

10g vanilla paste

340g plain flour

2 tsp Baking Powder

225ml whole milk

140g pouch Dr. Oetker Surprise Inside Cupcake Centres Salted Caramel

To decorate:

150g caster sugar

115g lightly salted butter, melted

Method:

Preheat the oven to 190 ̊C/ 375 ̊F/ Gas Mark 5. Lightly grease a 12 cup muffin tin.

Put the dates in a saucepan with 150ml water.

Bring to the boil, cover and simmer gently for about 5 minutes until soft and pulpy. Remove from the heat and beat well until smooth. Leave to cool.

Put the butter and sugar in a bowl and whisk together until light and creamy. Stir in the cold date mixture and whisk in the egg and vanilla paste.

Sift the flour and baking powder on top and mix together. Gradually add all the milk to make a smooth, thick batter.

Divide the mixture equally between the cups of the muffin tins – the tins should be just over ¾ full in order to form the dome shape – smooth the tops.

Bake in the oven for 25-30 minutes until risen to a dome and just firm to the touch.

Cool for 10 minutes in the tin.

Working on one at a time, carefully inject each one generously through the side with the salted caramel cupcake centre, making sure the nozzle is inserted fully into the centre of the duffins. Prop the duffins on their sides back in the muffin tins and leave for 10 minutes to allow the filling to settle, then transfer to a wire rack.

To decorate, while the muffins are still warm, put the sugar on a plate. Working on one muffin at a time, brush all over with melted butter and roll in the sugar to coat. Put back on the wire rack.

Your duffins are now ready to serve warm or allow to cool completely.

Shaughna Phillips revealed earlier this week that she is officially in the stages of early labour so her little one could be arriving very soon!

The former Love Island star previously spoke about the day she found out she was in early labour and has now gone into more detail about the experience which she described as “scary”.

Writing in her OK! Column, Shaughna revealed she first noticed a rash on her leg and bump, which first sparked concern for her and made her want to get it checked out.

The 28-year-old explained, “I was at a shoot on Monday getting my full glam done, and then I noticed that I had a rash on my leg, which I then realised had spread across my bump”.

“We called 111 and were told to go to A&E, which was really scary, and whilst we were waiting for a taxi, I was sick twice”.

Shaughna continued, “I was concerned because people say that itchiness and rashes can be something to do with your liver function when you're pregnant, but the doctors said everything was fine, before telling me that I am in early labour”.

“When I got home from hospital, I got a really intense pain that felt like it was pushing down, and that's when I really started to get nervous. My mum came and gave me a cuddle and I was just staring at myself in the mirror like ‘what have I done?!’”.

When announcing she was in early labour to her 1.4M Instagram followers, Phillips detailed, “What started as a “come to work with me” reel, turned into a “come to the hospital with me” reel”.

“I had my last job before baby this morning, an international women’s day panel, and just before my cab arrived, things took a turn and I was on the way to the hospital, and have been told I’m in early labour”.

“Home now, baby still tucked up nicely, and waiting for nature to do it’s thang”, she added.

Now that springtime is upon us, many of us are looking ahead to the beginning of wedding season. Valentine’s Day has just passed, meaning that there are lots of newly-engaged couples, buzzing with excitement to start planning their wedding.

Of course, your wedding day should be one of the most special days of your life, and so you deserve to feel beautiful as you walk down the aisle. When it comes to wedding dresses, it can be difficult to know which style you prefer – which is why it is always handy to have a bit of guidance!

To that end, the team behind Spellbound Bridal Couture in Arklow, Co. Wicklow have picked out six of the biggest wedding dress trends that will be staying strong throughout this year’s wedding season. Whether you decide to keep things simple or go big and bold, there will be something in Spellbound Bridal's selection to suit every bride. Check out these stunning trends below:

1. Two bridal looks in one day

Celebrities such as Hailey Bieber and Meghan Markle took this trend on board for their big days, and it looks like it is here to stay! Of course, not every bride has the budget for more than one dress, or perhaps you can’t stand the thought of having to change into a second gown. This is where the genius of a ‘two gowns in one’ wedding dress comes in – you can have a formal wedding gown for your ceremony, and then a more chic dress for your reception to dance the night away. Both the EDITH gown and the MILA gown would be perfect for this style, as they both offer a detachable overskirt to transform your wonderful wedding dress into a more casual look.

2. Sleeves

Sleeves are making a huge comeback amongst bridalwear this season! Whether they be long and sleek or puffy and voluminous, many brides have been hopping on the sleeves trend. Amazingly, some gowns offer detachable sleeves, meaning that you can easily transform your dress into something sleek for your reception, without having to make much effort. The GRACE gown from Spellbound Bridal has a stunning sleeve look, with dreamy puffy sleeves which compliment the dress’ style wonderfully. Alternatively, you could go with the elegant DEMI gown, with its full length sleeves to make any bride feel her most beautiful.

3. Nude and blush

If you’re looking for a slightly untraditional dress, then why not steer away from white? Nude and blush toned dresses have become incredibly popular recently, and they will certainly make you feel like a ‘blushing bride’. In particular, the one-shouldered SIENNA gown comes in stunning blush and nude shades, which would beautifully compliment many skin tones. The OPHELIA gown is equally gorgeous, offering a delicate balance of femininity and romance with its hints of ivory and blush. Both of these gowns deliver a fabulous floral tone, which is perfect for a wedding.

4. Exposed corsetry

Fans of Netflix hit Bridgerton will love this trend! Corsets have been brought back into fashion recently, and now bridal designers have taken them one step further this season with exposed corsetry. This is a modern twist on a timeless classic, allowing exposed boning in the corset to be the star of the dress. The ALICIA gown will grab all of your guests’ attention with its show stopping exposed corset-style at the back, which gorgeously ties the luxurious satin dress together. Alternatively, the MILLIE gown will flatter all body types with its exposed boning on a sparkling laceappliqué bodice. Who wouldn’t want a modern take on a fairytale dress?

5. Pearls are a girl’s best friend

That’s right – pearls don’t have to be restricted to jewellery! Pearl embellishments will continue to be a trend in the 2023-24 bridal season, for both dresses and headwear. You can either bedazzle with pearls to your heart’s content, or choose a more understated, elegant look. Spellbound Bridal’s JOSEPHINE gown shines with its handsewn shiny pearls, and the sparkle fabric gives it an added ‘oomph’. The DORA gown also has pearls as its main feature, with delicate detailing on both the sleeve and empire line. The addition of these pearls will have you feeling like a fairytale queen throughout your wedding day!

6. Sleek and simple

Although lots of brides enjoy indulging in extravagance for their wedding dress, many others prefer to keep things minimalistic with sleek shapes, clean lines and more subtle details. In our opinion, a minimalist dress can still make a maximalist statement! That is why the SHANIA gown ticks all of those boxes. This dress doesn’t sacrifice detailing at the back – instead, it prioritises it with a corset tie and a beautiful grand bow. The dress’ sleek silk gives it an effortless fit, ensuring that every bride will love their silhouette when wearing this gown.

Regardless of which trend you decide to choose for your big day, we hope you end up feeling like the wonderful bride that you are!
