Yearly Archives: 2023

The Irish have become accustomed to eating ice cream no matter the weather, but when it comes to summer, that’s when the real love affair begins. Today, Tesco Ireland has released new research that reveals the nation’s favourite ice creams of all time, the most sought-after flavour, and childhood memories that might melt your heart.

Not So Vanilla Afterall

With an infinite number of ice cream flavours and combinations available, we’re spoiled for choice. However, it looks like the Irish are fans of keeping it plain and simple. While 34% of respondents said that vanilla is the most boring flavour, 74% contradictorily said it was their overall favourite flavour when asked to select their top three. Surprisingly, strawberry came in second (57%) and raspberry ripple came in close third with 55%. It looks like the classic vanilla is having its moment – as the saying goes, ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!’

Playing Favourites

Vanilla even plays a part in Ireland’s favourite ice cream, with the Classic Magnum taking the top spot when ranking the top three (81%), followed by an Iceberger (72%) and a Choc Ice (52%). In recent weeks, the country mourned the loss of the Choc Ice as it was announced that the much-loved classic is being discontinued after dipping in popularity. However, it seems that they still hold a big place in the hearts (and mouths) of the Irish public, so Tesco own brand Choc Ices (RRP €2.50 / 2 for €4 Clubcard Price until 10/07/23) are here to fill the void! Other firm favourites in the top ice cream polls included blasts from the past like Wibbly Wobbly Wonders, Feast and the sorely missed Fat Frog.

Nothing Like Your Granny’s Ice Cream Wafers

We all have core memories about our childhood, and if you grew up in Ireland, some of those are sure to be based around ice cream. When asked what they remember most about growing up when it comes to ice cream, the majority of respondents (41%) said when an older relative would whip out the classic pint block of ice cream and make ice cream wafers – the excitement! Others say it was the joy of walking to the shops with friends at least once a day to get ice cream (19%), followed by having a big bowl of jelly and ice cream after dinner (18%). If you want a bit of childhood nostalgia this summer, the Tesco Vanilla Ice Cream Pint Block (RRP €1.09) or Tesco Raspberry Ripple Ice Cream Pint Block (RRP €1.09) are the perfect way to transport you back to simpler times. What’s even better is these pink blocks are produced in Cork and are made using locally sourced milk from West Cork.

Aisling Pearce, Chilled and Frozen Senior Buying Manager at Tesco Ireland, said: “It’s great to see that vanilla is having the moment it deserves! It’s a real crowd-pleaser that our customers love and is especially handy in the summer months when we’re hosting get-togethers with different groups of friends and family. It’s an easy flavour to ‘dress up’ – add some sprinkles or sauces, or eat it with jelly or wafers, it’s very versatile. We’ve seen steady growth in the sales of the classic ice cream pint blocks that we all remember from our childhood, and they don’t seem to be going anywhere any time soon!”

Did you know Tesco has low-calorie ice cream?

For those watching their calorie intake but not wanting to miss out on the ice cream fun, Tesco has several alternatives to indulge in without feeling guilty. Most importantly, these products don’t compromise on flavour! Try out the Tesco Salted Caramel 500ML (€2.99), Strawberry Cheesecake 500ML (€2.99) or Chocolate Fudge Brownie 500ML (€2.99), all of which are produced in Ireland. Just look out for the calorie counter on the packaging.

For convenience, customers can shop online at www.tesco.ie or visit the Tesco Ireland app, available to download from IOS or Android app stores. Additionally, shoppers can save time by using Tesco’s Click and Collect service, which allows them to order their groceries in advance – ideal for pre-ordering when on the way home from the airport or while on a staycation.

Olivia Rodrigo has made her long-awaited comeback!

The driver’s license singer hadn’t released any new music since the launch of her debut album SOUR in May 2021.

The popstar had a rapid rise to fame, earning three Grammy wins at the time. Now, over two years after SOUR’s release, Olivia has finally shared the first single from her second album.

Speaking on Zane Lowe’s New Music Daily programme, the 20-year-old opened up about the creation of her single Vampire.

“I wrote this song on the piano, super chill, in December of last year. My producer Dan and I finished it in January,” Olivia recalled.

“I’ve just always been really obsessed with songs that are very dynamic,” she continued. “We wanted to do a song where it just crescendoed the entire time and reflects the pent-up anger that you have.”

The former Disney star went on to admit that it was “really tough” to create her second album amid overnight success.

“When we first started writing this album a year and a half ago, I remember I couldn’t sit at the piano without thinking about what other people were going to think about what I was playing,” Olivia confessed.

However, the deja vu hitmaker noted that she slowly got herself out of that mindset. “All I have to do is make music that I would like to hear on the radio. That’s my sole job as an artist, making music. Everything else is out of my control,” she detailed.

Towards the end of her interview, Olivia revealed how she came up with GUTS, the name of her sophomore album.

“I’ve had it for a long time,” she shared. “I had it actually while I was making SOUR. I was like, ‘I want the next one to be GUTS.’”

“I had it in my head – four letters, all-caps, just like SOUR. I love it. I just think it’s an interesting word. People use it in so many interesting contexts,” she teased.

Olivia's new single Vampire is out now.

Paige Turley has revealed the reason why she would never go back into the villa!

The former Love Island star won the show’s first-ever winter series in 2020, alongside her now-ex Finn Tapp.

In recent years, the hit ITV reality show has taken the opportunity to bring former contestants back into the game – 2018 star Adam Collard reappeared during last year’s season, while series two’s Kady McDermott is currently enjoying her second stint in the villa.

However, despite it being a reoccurring twist, Paige has now admitted that she would never go on Love Island again. In an interview with new!, the 25-year-old explained her reason why.

“I wouldn’t do it again… purely because of the challenges, especially the food ones,” she laughed.

“They’ve left me scarred for a long time,” Paige teased. “But it was also the best experience and a once in a lifetime opportunity. Even things like not having your phone was so liberating.”

Paige’s revelation comes as she recently confirmed her split from Finn, after weeks of speculation. The pair had been dating for over three years and had been living together, but earlier this month, Paige shared that the romance had come to an end.

“The break up has obviously been tough,” the singer confessed in her interview. “I’ve only ever been in this world of fame with him so it’s been difficult in both personal and professional ways. It feels a bit like I’ve lost the left side of me.”

However, Paige went on to explain that there is no bad blood between the exes. “We’re still really good friends and keep in touch to support each other,” she detailed.

“We just drifted apart – we faced a lot of stuff between multiple lockdowns… just the kind of struggles that this world [of fame] brings. We drifted but we still call each other,” she added.

Davide chose to take to his Instagram stories yesterday evening to confirm that his romance with Ekin-Su has come to an end.

“@ekinsuofficial & I are no longer together,” the 28-year-old wrote in a statement.

“I am grateful for the memories and opportunities we shared together and I wish her nothing but the best. I would like for everybody to respect this decision during this difficult time, I will continue to support Ekin in anyway possible,” he concluded.

Ekin-Su has yet to make any official comment on her split from Davide. The 28-year-old previously shared that she is currently enjoying some time away with her family in her native Turkey.

Both reality stars later posted snaps of themselves from the event, with Ekin-Su writing in her caption: “Indiana Jones premier with my man”.

Sustainable Irish fashion designer Aoife Mc Namara has unveiled her latest collection, Season 9: Bláth Fiáin. Inspired by Irish wildflowers, the new collection is sustainably produced in collaboration with local textile producers using recycled and regenerative materials, such as naturally-dyed Irish linen and Irish wool.

A powerful statement of the label’s mission to reconnect people to nature, the 12-piece collection is predominantly handmade in Ireland using eco-friendly materials – proving that it is possible to make beautiful clothes with a positive impact on the environment, society and the fashion industry as a whole.

Sustainable Irish fashion designer Aoife Mc Namara

The Limerick-based designer has become synonymous with sustainable design that expresses the beauty of nature. Her latest designs embody the wildflowers found in the Burren Co. Clare through a pastel colour palette, delicately hand-stitched flowers and the use of natural fibres.

Continuously striving to find innovative ways to design and create clothes sustainably, Aoife Mc Namara collaborated with Fibreshed Ireland to create unique handmade garments. Fibreshed is a network of local textile artists working toward a regenerative fibre system based on local fibre, local dyes and local labour.

Bláth Fiáin is made exclusively with sustainable materials, such as natural yarn-dyed Irish linen, supplied by Emblem Weavers in Wexford, and 100% Irish wool knitted by Meath-based Ciaran’s Yarns.

A breathtaking update on Aoife Mc Namara’s now signature designs, stand-out pieces in the Bláth Fiáin collection include the Primrose Co-ord, a pale yellow jacket with oversized shoulder pads and a puff sleeve paired with a matching skirt. The two-piece is made with recycled satin, a recycled mix of woven yarns and Irish linen. Another two-piece, the Daisy Co-Ord pairs a waistcoat and palazzo trousers, both in stunning pinstripe yarn-dyed Irish linen.

For the Resewing Our Roots Knitted Vest Aoife worked with Fibreshed member knitwear designer Mihai Mar to bring her design to life. The vest is handmade by using naturally dyed Irish wool.

Aoife Mc Namara will follow a pre-order model for the collection. Pre-order is a slower, more sustainable approach to production, as only the amount of pieces purchased will be produced. The majority of the collection will also be handmade in Ireland.

Speaking about the Bláth Fiáin collection, Aoife Mc Namara said: “Nature will always be my muse. When I’m designing, I keep a ‘soil-to-soil’ approach front of mind, holistically considering the end of a garment's life before it is even created. This collection is inspired by plants and made with mostly regenerative natural fibres, like linen and wool. My vision is that all Aoife Mc Namara designs will be made solely with fibres that will eventually decompose into nutrients for a healthier ecosystem. And in the meantime, they are quality sustainable pieces that will last people decades. This collection is a big stepping stone for our brand towards our commitment to achieving true fashion circularity.”

The collection was first unveiled at a one-of-a-kind fashion show held on Spanish Point Beach, Co. Clare. Show guests experienced a first look at the new Aoife Mc Namara designs as models walked barefoot on the sand against a backdrop of the Atlantic Ocean while being serenaded by local musician Susan O’Neill. Imagery was captured by photographer Katie Boner.

Aoife Mc Namara Season 9: Bláth Fiáin is available to pre-order exclusively from aoifemacnamara.com.

Too Hot To Handle fans, listen up – we have some news!

Netflix has just revealed a first look at the cast for the fifth season of the hit dating show.

Taking to social media earlier today, the producers behind Too Hot To Handle shared the official poster for season five, showcasing the 10 brand new contestants.

The first look poster also reiterates that the season will launch in just a few weeks time, which is exactly what we want to hear!

Credit: Netflix

“Meet the singles of Too Hot To Handle: Season 5. Coming in hot 14 July, only on Netflix,” the streaming giant penned in their caption.

Netflix has yet to release a trailer for the fifth season, but a few weeks ago, they published a brief teaser to remind us of the drama so far.

For anyone that is unfamiliar with the premise of the show, Too Hot To Handle is unique as the single contestants are not allowed to get physically intimate with one another until robot Lana says so. If they do, Lana immediately deducts a chunk from the $200,000 cash prize, which every contestant wants to win.

By doing this, the show wants its contestants to focus on an emotional connection, rather than a physical connection. Naturally though, as it’s a dating show with lots of lusty singletons in a tropical location, they tend to find it difficult to keep someone they find attractive at arm’s length. Let the chaos commence!

The fifth season of Too Hot To Handle premieres on Netflix in two weeks’ time on Friday, July 14. We can’t wait to see what happens!

Claudia Fogarty has finally revealed if she has rekindled her romance with Casey O’Gorman.

The Love Island stars met earlier this year during the show’s winter series, but their relationship fizzled out when Casey dumped Claudia for new bombshell Rosie.

Since leaving the villa, fans have been speculating that Claudia and Casey’s romance might be back on. Now, Claudia has finally taken the opportunity to address the rumours!

Credit: ITV

Speaking on the Nip Tuck podcast, the 28-year-old was grilled on her relationship with Casey.

When asked, Claudia laughed nervously and joked: “The elephant in the room is just here, isn’t it?”

After dodging questions on whether she has slept with Casey, Claudia then chose to open up.

“Everybody wants their life private with relationships and stuff, but with what’s gone on with us two, it’s different. People are invested, they want to know and I get that,” she began.

Credit: Casey O'Gorman Instagram

Claudia went on to confess that speculations haven’t been completely wrong. “We have overstepped the friendship mark in the past, I’m not going to deny that – I think it’s pretty obvious to everyone!”

However, she clarified further: “I think for us two now, it’s a weird one. We have so much love for each other and we know that. We speak every day.”

“I think we’ll always have love for each other, but I don’t know if either of us would want to overstep that barrier again, because if we did, it would ruin our friendship if something went wrong,” Claudia continued.

The star noted that the pair “always flirt” with each other, but that they might not be compatible. “I think me and Casey are both probably at different points in our lives. I’m not getting any younger, I am ready to settle up with someone – the next person for me, I want it to be ‘the one,’” she admitted.

Concluding her explanation, Claudia revealed: “We’re really good friends. Never say never, but we are just the best of friends.”

Niall Horan has been speaking out in praise of his friend Lewis Capaldi.

Earlier this week, Lewis announced that he would be taking a break from his singing career as a result of Tourette’s Syndrome.

In a statement, the Someone You Loved hitmaker confirmed that he was cancelling all of his upcoming performances.

“I need to feel well to perform at the standard you all deserve. Playing for you every night is all I've ever dreamed of so this has been the most difficult decision of my life. I'll be back as soon as I possibly can,” the 26-year-old wrote.

Now, Lewis’ good friend and fellow popstar Niall Horan has spoken out to show his support.

The two stars became friends a few years ago, when the former One Direction hitmaker asked Lewis to open shows for him in 2018.

In a recent interview with The Sun, Niall praised his mate’s decision to step back from the limelight.

“I speak to Lewis most days to be honest with you,” the 29-year-old detailed, adding that he is “really happy for Lewis that he’s able to take the time that he obviously feels he needs.”

The Slow Hands singer then went on to sympathise with Lewis’ struggles. “I don’t think you ever truly get used to singing in front of 100,000 people. If you have any sort of performance anxieties or anything like that then that stage can be a tough place,” he explained.

Last Saturday, Lewis struggled to finish his set at Glastonbury, which resulted in the crowd of thousands singing out for him.

“I think they realised how much he was struggling up there. It was a proper human moment,” Niall detailed of the heartwarming scenes.

“He’s not just the fella who sings and makes us laugh all the time, he’s the fella who also has anxieties and Tourette’s Syndrome and it’s coming to fruition on stage, so I’m glad people were right there behind him showing him support,” he concluded.
