Yearly Archives: 2017

I’d be the first to tell you that I’m not amazing with money.

When everyone else was getting the 411 on financial competency, I was asking for an advance on my pocket money because I had likely spent every last penny on a subscription to the Boyzone fanclub.

While I make rent, pay my bills, and top-up my Leap Card every month without fail, I still find myself staggering towards pay day, hands outstretched and tongue hanging listlessly out the side of my mouth.

I’m genuinely shocked when friends and colleagues casually mention restaurant bookings or after-work drinks in the final week of the month.

Yes, I still have a roof over my head, but the only thing I’ll be eating and drinking is tinned tuna and coffee supplied by my employer in the seven days before that sweet, sweet salary drops.

This is not how exactly how I envisioned adult life, but if social media is anything to go by, it’s not exactly how anyone envisioned adult life.

While, admittedly, I’m not in a position to lecture anyone on their money management, I do feel certain tips and tricks I’ve picked up along the way have kept the wolf from my door.

So, without further ado, here are three tips which help me to stay on track when my heart seems intent on ruining my own life.

1. Divide and conquer

I've found that using pay day to immediately divide my money between what's actually mine and what is soon set to leave my account is a handy way of getting to grips with my budget for the month ahead.

The vast majority of my direct debits leave my account mid month, and manual transferrals often aren't required until the end of the month, so once my salary drops, I immediately transfer my anticipated outgoings to another account, so I get a proper handle on exactly how much disposable income I have.

And while your current account takes an immediate hit, at least the money in there is yours and ultimately allows you to budget more accurately.

2. Use cash, not card

This required a lot of practice, but I've ultimately realised that the months I opted to use cash over card made me a lot more responsible when it came to my spending.

Withdrawing a lump sump every Sunday evening which you feel will realistically see you through until the following Sunday is one of the simplest ways to keep control of your money.

Breaking a €20 note on a €3 coffee is a lot less appealing than simply tapping your card, and ultimately helps you to identify the times and events when you spend money needlessly.

3. Save a little

It can be so difficult to save money when you seem to have countless outgoings every month, but once you make a habit of it, it becomes second-nature.

Open an account that requires seven days notice to withdraw, and deposit a small amount in every pay day, and then – here's the important part – forget about it.

If it takes you a week to access it, it gives you time to consider whether you're actually comfortable dipping into your savings over a fleeting desire.

And the best part? Seeing your small nest egg increase with every passing week.

A great manicure can completely tie together an outfit or look.

From muted neutrals to intergalactic nail art, there are so many ways to compliment your look.

Nail art veterans Unistella are often behind some of the internet's most outrageous nail trends, and what we've just discovered on their Insta page is no exception.

May we introduce to you – LED Disco nails.

These nails literally light up the room with the miniscule bulbs attached to the end of the nail tip.

The bulbs are shaped like gems to add a little extra pazazz, as if it was needed.

A post shared by Park Eunkyung (@nail_unistella) on

Park Eunkyung, creative nail genius and owner of the Unistella salon, created the look by drilling the bulbs trough the nails.

While these may be completely mesmerising, we're not so sure we'll be trying the look for ourselves any time soon.

The look is more than a little OTT, and definitely constitutes more as actual art than nail art.

Maybe if we go as a robot for Halloween…

Love can be a tricky game.

If you fancy someone, it can be difficult to know if they like you back *cue hours of stalking them online and asking your mates 'do you think I should text him?'*

Sometimes your crush may act coy or sometimes they can be genuinely shy and you just can't gauge what they're feeling.

Well, according to new research, your eyes scan people's bodies differently depending on whether you want to be platonic or romantic with them.

The study, which was published in the journal Archives of Sexual Behaviour, studied 100 people and asked them to look at photographs of different people.

The researchers found that those who looked at the head and chest more were "assessing potential [romantic] mates," and those who looked at the legs and feet were more interested in friends.

"Eye gaze was a valid indicator of relationship interest. For women, looking at the head corresponded to greater interest in friendship, whereas for men looking at the head corresponded to less interest in friendship," the study said.

The study concluded by saying: "Research on attraction tends to assume there is a fixed set of characteristics that makes a person desirable.

"This new study shows that what people look for in a prospective relationship partner depends on their relational goals.

"The same person who makes a highly desirable friend may not make a good mate," it added.

When you're at the airport or in a coffee shop, it's safe to say many of us use the free Wi-Fi.

Pop in your email address and you're good to go, right?

Usually that's the drill. But it wasn't so for some 22,000 people recently.

Purple, a Manchester based company that specialises in running WiFi hotspots for UK brands like Legoland and Pizza Express, decided to try a little experiment.

For two weeks, the company inserted a 'Community Service Clause' into its terms of service agreement.

And of course, 22,000 people agreed to it.

But what exactly did they agree to do? Well, here's the list below:

  • Cleansing local parks of animal waste

  • Providing hugs to stray cats and dogs

  • Manually relieving sewer blockages

  • Cleaning portable lavatories at local festivals and events

  • Painting snail shells to brighten up their existence

  • Scraping chewing gum off the streets

We particularly like the second last one, and would do it for free just to make a little snail's day.

There was also a prize on offer for anybody who rang the company and mentioned the 'Community Service Clause'.

Just one person received a prize.

However, Purple said that they will not even try to implement it, and only included the clause for a bit of fun.

So there you go people, read the terms and conditions or you could end up scraping chewing gum off the streets.

Like the rest of the world, we're obsessed with Game of Thrones at the SHEmazing HQ.

We waited with bated breath for the arrival of season seven, and now that we're catching up with the goings-on of Westeros, our minds have already wandered to the final season of the iconic show.

The eight season is currently being written, and HBO programming president Corey Bloyes has revealed that it may be a while until we get to see the finished product on our screens.

When asked by Entertainment Weekly if GoT's final season could be as late as 2019, Bloys confirmed it was a 'yeah.'

'Yeah. They have to write the episodes and figure out the production schedule,' he said.

'We’ll have a better sense of that once they get further into the writing.'

A post shared by gameofthrones (@gameofthrones) on

Bloyes also quashed rumours of five potential spin-off shows.

While he admitted that there were four or five ideas for spin-offs in the works, he hoped that through careful curation, GoT writers would whittle them down to one amazing concept.

He also let slip that the spin-off also would not be hitting screens until long after the final season has aired.

'That’s not what’s going on. The idea is not to do four shows,' he told Entertainment Weekly.

A post shared by gameofthrones (@gameofthrones) on

'The bar set is so high that my hope is to get one show that lives up to it. Also, this is a long-term plan.'

'Our No. 1 goal is the seventh season this summer and getting the eighth season written and aired.'

Until then, we'll be binge-watching season seven.

So, it's kind of a running joke that Irish people own a distinct lack of rain gear.

Mariah Carey is the indisputable queen of Christmas, with her iconic All I Want For Christmas song dominating the charts every year.

The pop sensation revealed earlier this year that her classic tune was being converted into a movie, and now Mariah has shared that another movie is in the works.

The Star is set to be a complete Christmas Classic, telling the story of the first every Christmas through the animated eyes of the animals involved.

Mariah took to Twitter to leak the trailer, and told fans that she was excited for them to see it this holiday season.

She also hinted that she would be singing a new song for the film.

The trailer revealed that both Opera and Kelly Clarkson would also be featuring in the upcoming flick.

It's definitely too early to be excited for Xmas, but with two new cosy films to look forward to, we're kind of hankering for fairy lights and eggnog.

Until then, we'll be following Mariah in the hopes of getting a sneak preview of her new song…

If you thought you'd seen the last of The Hills when Brody Jenner and Kristin Cavallari appeared to confirm the show's lack of 'reality' by hugging on an LA sound stage in the final episode back in 2010, Audrina Patridge has news for you.

Speaking during a recent interview, the 32-year-old revealed that she wouldn't be opposed to a reunion now that the stars of the iconic MTV show have moved on from the type of drama that normally kicked off in Les Deux of a Tuesday.

"I feel like we are all at a different place in our lives and we're past the drama, past the cat fights," Audrina said during an interview with E! News.

Certain that the time they've spent apart and the maturing they've done in the interim would make for much more genuine relationships, the mum-of-one thinks that she would be able to relate to her former co-stars more these days.

"We're all married, we all have kids, we're all at a different place in our lives so we'd all be able to relate to each other way more."

Audrina, who married Corey Bohan in 2016 and gave birth to her first child that same year, sees the merit in reconnecting with the likes of Lauren, who became a mum this year, and Kristin who has three children.

"Even when you're married, you don't get a lot of girl time so just to talk to someone that's going through the same things as you are – it's refreshing to know you're not alone," she admitted.

Audrina had a number of notoriously tumultuous relationships during her six years on the show, enduring many ups and downs with Lauren Conrad, Heidi Montag, Kristin Cavallari and Justin Bobby.

Freedom of movement of labour between the United Kingdom and the European Union will end in the spring of 2019, UK immigration minister, Brandon Lewis said this morning.

A new immigration system will be put in place by March 2019, though the details of this are not yet known.

The news comes as the government commissioned a “detailed assessment” of the costs and benefits of EU migrants.

The report is due to be completed in September 2018, six months before the UK's proposed exit date.

Meanwhile, Home Secretary, Amber Rudd insisted Britain would remain open to skilled workers from the EU after Brexit, insisting she wanted the “brightest and best” to know they could still choose to live and work in Britain after the new immigration laws are put in place.

She told The Financial Times: "Once we have left the EU, this government will apply its own immigration rules and requirements that will meet the needs of UK businesses, but also of wider society.”

"I also want to reassure businesses and EU nationals that we will ensure there is no 'cliff edge' once we leave the bloc."

We've all seen one or two electric scooters whizz around town; you might even own one.

But did you know you need a driver's licence and insurance for one?

According to the Gardaí's most recent tweet, you could face prosecution if you use one on a public road without all the legal bits and bobs.

An Garda Síochána tweeted this morning: "DMR Traffic Electric mechaically propelled scooter stopped on public road.

"No insurance/licence. Scooter seized and prosecution to follow (sic)."

However, many are commenting on the tweet, saying it's a bit harsh:

What do you think? Did they take it too far or is it just the rules of the road?
