Despite providing essential, often life-saving services within our health system, newly-qualified nurses in this country face low starting salaries and increasingly tough working-conditions.

Understandably, the Irish Nurses And Midwives Organisation is now desperately appealing to the government to improve pay, hours, staffing levels, and post graduate opportunities.

But while unions and politicians remain embattled, ordinary, hard-working nurses are struggling – sometimes desperately so.

Indeed, recently one nurse felt compelled to take to a Facebook page that offers support to those working in the industry.

In a powerfully penned post that has now garnered significant traction online, the unnamed mother makes her compelling argument for pay restoration – whereby the penalties inflicted on the public service sector by Troika-led austerity are eased or abolished.

The nurse has chosen to remain anonymous in order to protect her husband and children; here is an extract from her post

I, like thousands of others, went to college for four years and got my nursing degree.

I got married to a tradesman. We got a mortgage for a three bedroomed house and we had two children.

We could pay for our mortgage. We had one family holiday a year. We had two cars. Neither of us had new cars but the cars we bought got us to our jobs and back home again.

We lived a normal life. Nothing fancy. But we got by. Then the banks and the government decided to gamble with our lives. My husband lost his job in the crash.

And I was forced to take on all the bills including the mortgage.

It was tough but I did OK. We sold my husband’s car for €3,000. We tightened our belts.

Then the government decided to punish us even further for their mistakes. They introduced USC. Again we tightened our belts even further. My husband was getting the odd job here and there but his weekly wage was gone. We were struggling to get by.

Gone was the yearly holiday. Gone were the day trips away. Gone was the monthly night out for the two of us.

As if that wasn't enough punishment the government decided that because I'm a nurse, I must pay PRD (Pension Related Deduction). A tax that was only to be introduced as an emergency tax but for some reason we are still being forced to pay.

We were already at rock bottom… but that destroyed us. Santa suddenly hadn't got a lot of money. Toys were second hand from charity shops. Food was bargain basement end of life food. And our mortgage? I just can't pay it any longer.

I try to pay some money off it but the money that I used to pay for the mortgage is now going to pay USC and PRD. Anything I have left is going on paying for heating, electricity and the kids’ food and schooling. Our heating is one fire in the sitting room and hot water bottles.

And now the banks have decided that they're going to take our home. They're going to leave us homeless. I've tried to talk to them but they don't want to know.

I've tried to come to a deal with them to pay off as much as I can but it isn't good enough. They are completely heartless. They want the house.

We are now going through the repossession courts desperately trying to save the last thing we have left, our little family home.

I'm used to being verbally and physically abused in my job. I'll never get used to the ward being constantly short staffed and always overcrowded though. Every working day is a nightmare but it's not as tough as constantly going hungry everyday and coming home to see my husband a shadow of his former self.

We were once just a normal couple going about our simple lives and now we are a very broken couple who are desperately trying to save the last thing we have left, the roof over our heads.

And has our government even tried to help us save our home? Not at all. In fact they haven't even tried to stop the courts from taking our home at all and yet they are responsible for our home being taken from us.

Have they tried to restore our pay? No. Instead they are trying to lay the blame at our feet that if they restore any of our pay that we will put this country into another recession. How dare they.

They talk about recovery non stop. What recovery? The only ones I see in recovery are the banks and all the self serving politicians!

Not one of them have tried to help us and yet they're happy enough to hand themselves pay rises of €5,000 each. They make me want to vomit. None of them care. Not one of them.

I'm a nurse. I'm no longer a proud nurse. I'm well and truly broken and I don't think I'll ever live a normal life again.

I'm in tears writing this. My heart is just broken. We can't take much more.

First came the selfie stick, then the light up phone case, and we thought we'd seen it all by the time the "belfie" stick rolled around.

We were wrong, and there's a new iPhone accessory designed to give selfies the ultimate photo-shoot vibe.

Contouring and perfect lighting are no longer enough, now a mini wind machine for your phone actually exists.

The selfie fan plugs into your phone to provide you with a Victoria's Secret modelling experience without the photography team. Or the abs.

I you're super committed to the art of the selfie, professional model-standard shots can now be achieved without leaving the couch.

While this definitely fall under the notions category, somewhere, deep down, we kind of want one.

The fans are available online from Urban Outfitters and Amazon.

Kanye West shocked fans when he revealed that he supported Donald Trump in the recent American presidential election.

The Grammy Award winning rapper made the revelation while performing at his Saint Pablo tour in San Jose.

“I told y’all I didn’t vote, right? But if I would have voted, I would have voted Trump" said the controversial star, in a video uploaded by a concert attendee.

One fan live Tweeted Kanye's alleged 40 minute political preaching.

Kanye "is glad Trump inspired racists to reveal themselves." "This is the beginning," said the rapper.

Kanye also reportedly reiterated his ambitions to run for president in the 2020 elections.

"Rappers are the philosophers of our now, celebrities are the influencers of our now, just look at the president, he wasn't in politics and won," said the star.

Most Hollywood A-listers, such a George Clooney, Beyonce and Kendall Jenner were resoundingly in support of Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton.

Kanye also shared his opinions about the Clinton campaign over several speeches during the concert, and said that he "loved" Trump's debate style.

One concert attendee reportedly threw something at the singer, who then threatened to cancel the show and asked: "Am I not allowed to have an opinion?"

"I'm a human being too, I have feelings, I liked the debates, Im a guy and a rapper, I'm a non political rebel, the debates were entertaining"

The rapper is said to have stopped multiple songs during the concert to continue discussing Trump's "genius."

Never shy of ruffling a few feathers, the rapper then said that the Saint Pablo tour was a safe place for people all all political beliefs.

The singer recently shared a piece of artwork of himself sitting in the Oval Room of the White House, reinforcing his intentions to run for president in the next elections.

She is definitely one of the cutest celebrity kids around, so it is no surprise that Victoria Beckham looked to Harper when designing a T-shirt in aid of World AIDS day.

The mum-of-four has been a UNAIDS Global Goodwill Ambassador since 2014, and each year designs a new T-shirt in a bid to raise much-needed funds and awareness.

Thank you @voguemagazine! My #WAD2016 t-shirts available tomorrow at #VBDoverSt and victoriabeckham.com x VB

This time, the mum looked to her five-year-old when figuring out the best design for the campaign, and we absolutely LOVE her choice!

Victoria chose a stick drawing done by her daughter – the same one David Beckham has tattooed on her hand – and managed to create a simple but effective top that we are sure people will be in a rush to nab.

The 41-year-old has even designed a seriously cute matching T-shirt for kids!

All the profits made will support Born Free Africa who are working on Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission.

If you want to get your hands on one you can head over to Victoria’s Dover store or head online.

Twitter can be a downright painful place at times, but an unlikely duo has just reminded us of the pure comedy gold it can produce.

While we’re still dizzy from Ireland’s historic victory over the All Blacks a fortnight ago in Chicago, this weekend’s return match is set to be even more thrilling.

Despite the fact that New Zealand have declared themselves the ‘underdogs’ going into Saturday’s game, their national airline has served up some fighting talk today!

Yep, Twitter was all about Aer Lingus versus Air New Zealand this morning, and the banter was only mighty.

It all started with ANZ tweeting: “Hey there Aer Lingus! Time for the All Blacks vs Ireland, round 2. Not sure how long your lucky shamrock will last!”

Of course, our guys weren’t about to leave the ‘#AirlineChallenge’ go, and they promptly replied: “Chicago had nothing to do with luck and everything to do with good prep! We’re ready!”

To say the exchange that followed has won the internet today, would be an understatement.

The airlines went on to trade hilarious ‘barbs’ including some laugh-out-loud suggestions as to how the victors can lord it up over the losers!

So far, if Ireland win, ANZ are looking at an all-green flight ticket makeover, and an Irish overhaul of their in-flight magazine Kia Ora.

Oh, and someone will have the task of mowing ‘Aer Lingus Welcomes You To Auckland Airport’ into the grass at the landmark – and Christmas carolling is also on the cards!

No matter who may emerge victorious on Saturday, Aer Lingus and Air New Zealand are total winners in our eyes after that exchange.

They delighted everyone yesterday, when they announced that they’re expecting their second child, and it looks like we can look forward to plenty more adorable updates from Rochelle and Marvin Humes.

The Saturdays singer Rochelle took to her Instagram account last night to share an ultrasound from a recent pregnancy scan.

“Santa isn’t the only one coming to town…Baby Humes due 2017,” read the caption on the scan, which featured a Santa hat on Baby’s head!

Best Christmas pressie ever And then there were 4…

The 27-year-old added: “Best Christmas pressie ever. And then there were four…”

The couple delighted their legion of fans when they shared their exciting news on Thursday, posting shots of pregnant Rochelle cradling her baby bump.

The congratulatory messages soon came flooding in for the showbiz duo who are, of course, already parents to three-year-old daughter Alaia-Mai.

Ten tiny fingers, ten tiny toes, but who are you? Nobody knows…

The announcement came just weeks after singer and presenter Rochelle admitted that she was feeling the pressure to give her daughter a brother or sister.

In an interview with the Sun, the mum-of-one said: “I’m feeling it from Alaia, for sure! She’s already quizzing me and saying that her friends all have brothers or sisters.”

“At the minute I feel so blessed and happy with the way everything is that I’d never put pressure on that, but definitely in the future,” she added.

She had us all fooled!
