Yearly Archives: 2016

Eimear (not her real name) first began battling with depression and mental health issues three years ago. Since then she says she has been let down on numerous occasions by the HSE and even now cannot get the help she desperately needs.

This is her open letter to the Minister For Health Leo Varadkar, as shared with us today.

Dear Leo,

After struggling for so many years, I felt I needed to share my story with you. I need your help.

My journey began when I was just a sixteen years old, I remember it like it was yesterday. It started in the New Year, when I woke up one day crying.

I felt so overwhelmed and was honestly consumed with sadness. I cried for weeks and weeks, and practically visited the doctors every day. This is where I was first diagnosed with depression – a word I'd never heard of and genuinely knew nothing about.

I started on sleeping tablets first of all and even then I couldn't sleep.

"I tried to overdose"

I remember the hopelessness I felt and how alone I actually was because I didn't know anyone going through the same thing.

So I tried to overdose, taking more sleeping tablets than I should have. Of course my mum panicked and brought me straight to the doctor, where it was suggested I go to St John Of God Hospital because I wasn't safe at home.

So that's where we went, I had a referral and I needed urgent help. I spoke with a doctor there who told me that they couldn't take me in because I was underage. This is completely untrue because I've just learnt recently that they have an Adolescents Department. Thus, this was the first time the HSE failed my family.

"I would wake them up with computer wires around my neck"

My house is quiet – I live with my mum and my older sister – so my illness took a massive toll on them both. I would wake them up threatening to take my own life, with belts or computer wires around my neck or even holding a knife.

I was finally referred to the Lucena Clinic [a child and adolescent service run by Saint John Of God Ministeries] in which I received tremendous help through counselling. It was there I began on my journey to recovery.

However, when I turned 18, everything changed, as I was now considered an 'adult', I was referred to Cluain Mhuire, another service for those aged over 18.

I wasn't ready to leave Lucena. It was my safe haven, a place I could rely on always, and a place where I was treated like a member of the family. But it got to a stage where I had to go, other teenagers needed help and I had to transition.

"I was struggling, begging for help and no one was hearing me"

I am now almost twenty years old and have finally been seen by Cluain Mhuire.

My depression and anxiety are now back with a vengeance and it was only after an attempted overdose that Cluain Mhuire got in contact.

It took them four days to call me and even then I was told that they would try to 'squeeze' me in. I was struggling, begging for help and no one was hearing me.

I had to wait one week after my attempted suicide to see the Crisis Liaison Officer who was supposed to help me. A one week wait, because she was on holidays.

There must have been someone else that could have helped me, surely? Anybody. All I wanted was help.

"I needed a plan that would allow me to not want to end my life"

After numerous phone calls, I finally got an appointment where she interviewed me profusely for two hours and we tried to arrange a plan. That's what I needed, I needed a plan, a plan that would allow me to get better, to not want to end my life.

We discussed numerous groups that I could get involved in – something that I myself was hesitant about because I find it so difficult to open up.

The hardest part is that unlike Lucena, Cluain Mhuire don't offer individual counselling, only group help, which is something that I have to get used to.

During the appointment, the CLO mentioned a day hospital, which I initially said no to because I didn't want to fall behind in college.

"I would do anything to get better"

Before I left, she spoke to my mum and once again mentioned the day hospital. I decided to give it a go, I would do anything to get better, and to be myself again.

She said she'd give me a call that Thursday after she had spoken to Lucena and received my records. We must remind ourselves that this is two weeks after my suicide attempt.

She didn't call on Thursday, I had to call her, Leo. She told me I would start with a counselling group on February 17 – which is three-and-a-half weeks away from today.

"The HSE services are a complete joke"

I was set on going into this day hospital so I could get into a routine, sleep at night and have something to live for. It was her idea, she offered me this help. Now it turns out that I have to wait to see if there is a place for me.

I asked her, "What if there's not? What am I going to do?"

I was told to simply go back to college and try not to fall behind on my work there.

"Each and every day I struggle to get up"

The HSE services are a complete joke, they have failed me. Not only have I waited two years to transition into the adult facilities but I am still waiting.

My cry for help hasn't worked. Each and every day I struggle to get up, I don't eat, I don't sleep, I'm just here, trying to survive each day.

I'm sharing this with you Leo, in the hope that you can do something. I'm desperate for your help.

Saoirse Ronan had a pretty random question put to her by W Magazine but she totally went with it in this pretty adorable video.

The 21-year-old Carlow actress was asked to name her favourite sex scene in a film and then went on to describe the clip in hilarious detail.

The Brooklyn actress totally owned it though as she described a comedic scene been Kristin Wiig and Will Forte in 2010 comedy film MacGruber.

"I think it's wonderful," said Saoirse as she dons an inexplicable peroxide blonde wig.

"That always makes me laugh."

Saoirse is currently on a pretty exhausting press stint ahead of her nomination at the Academy Awards which takes place next month.

Watch the exact scene she is describing below:

While we all may be quite shocked by Stephanie Davis' carry on with Irish model Jeremy McConnell in the CBB house, it seems that Steph's boyfriend on the outside may also be no angel.

Speaking to the Mirror, a barmaid has come forth and claimed that Sam Reece spent a pretty steamy night with her while on vacation in Magaluf last summer when he was supposed to be in a relationship with Steph.

"Obviously in recent articles, it's being portrayed as if [Sam's] the victim," said Georgia Thomson to the paper.

"But obviously I know that he's done this. He's not as innocent as everyone thinks."

According to Georgia, she met the First Dates star in a popular night club on the Marrocan island called The Project.

After meeting in the VIP section, Sam came back to their home with two friends. When leaving the next morning, Georgia alleged that the tattoo'd model told her not to post the photos anywhere.

"When he was getting dressed to leave, he said 'I'll see you around', and said 'please don't tweet about it because obviously you know I've got a girlfriend'."

She even shared grainy pictures of her and Sam out in Magaluf and a picture of him coming down the stairs of her home the next day.

A representative of the model has said that Sam is denying the claims and the Sheffield hunk even posted a tweet calling the allegations "laughable."

Hmm, we don't know what to believe but one thing is for sure, there sure is going to be fireworks when Steph leaves that house.

We know Beyonce is releasing music in early 2016.

And two years after the surprise release of her eponymous fifth album, we know that she is inclined to drop an entire record of new songs and videos with zero notice.

So to help minimise the total shock of being hit with a total new set of whopper tunes in one go, we're examining all the evidence to figure out exactly WHEN Bey is going to hit us with her music.

1) February, people

While no official announcement has been made and no release date has been specified, all media outlets are reporting that the album should be upon us sometime in February.

2) Special super bowl announcement

The new album may coincide with Beyonce's much anticipated performance at the Super Bowl.

"Beyonce is ready to drop her album at any time," a source has told the Sun.

"But there’s a very strong chance the announcement could happen during the Super Bowl next month.”

Bey is set to perform with Coldplay during the much coveted half-time show.

3) She's waiting for Adele fever to die down

One thing is for sure, Beyonce knows what's up.

According to the same source, she is waiting for the right time to drop her new tunes and that means waiting for all the hype surrounding Adele's latest release, 25, to die down.

"[The album] was wrapped up at the end of 2015 but she held off on a release as a code of honour to Adele, so their records didn’t clash."

"Beyonce doesn’t have the pressure of releasing an album and is doing bits here and there because she and her team know it is Adele’s time to shine."

4) It's ready to go

One thing is for sure, the whole album is completely finished.

"Beyonce has totally relaxed her schedule and pushed back her album, which is now complete and ready to go,"said the source.

Just give it to us!

5) No single

As most musicians hit us with one or two singles a few months before an album releases, the fact that there is pure silence coming from the Beyonce camp has us guessing that this will be a surprise album release like her last one.

However, there is strong possibility she will sample songs at her Super Bowl show.

6) New videos

Beyonce has however been filming music videos.

French website MCM reported that Beyonce was shooting scenes for a music vid in mid December on a week long shoot.

The rumours were never substantiated but a French choreographer added fuel to the fire when he posted a casting call for a Beyonce video on his Facebook.

The post was quickly deleted, but it is safe to say that Bey is about to hit us hard.

For most of us, getting out of bed in the morning is an absolute chore.

The bleary eyes, the cold room and the prospect of school or work does not have many of us leaping from our warm duvet in the early hours.

However, we reckon a casual morning RAVE would definitely add a little spring in our step to those cold winter mornings.

This morning's rave which started day 2 of Active Schools week! Thanks for all the shares and amazingly positive feedbackit's been overwhelming! If you like this, check out our first ever early morning rave from last year! – https://www.facebook.com/StRaphaelasSecondarySchool/videos/462109207264052/

And this is the idea at St. Raphaela's, an all-girls primary and secondary school in Stillorgan, who have been putting on morning dance sessions for their students.

This amazing video captures the morning rave in full swing as secondary school students and teachers alike wake up with a proper bop to classic dance tune Maniac 2000.

Not long before the glow sticks are brought out we reckon.

The video has since gone viral and everyone sort of loves the idea.

The raves have been put on as part of Active Schools Week, an initiative encouraged by the Department of Education to get children active but no one has nailed it quite like St. Raphaela's.

Right, now how do we go about getting one organised in work…

Bars and clothes shops – two places you can always be assured of spending ALL that money that you definitely don't have. Rent, what rent?

Well, you can wave goodbye to having a healthy bank balance any time soon, as Brown Thomas are apparently hoping to combine those two financial black holes into one.

The Irish retail giant has applied for a FULL pub licence as part of plans to refurbish its flagship store on Dublin's Grafton Street,

Brown Thomas Dublin's third-floor restaurant already serves wine and champagne to diners, but a full pub licence would mean it could also serve pints, spirits and all kinds of cocktails.

And shots.

And Jagerbombs.

A judge has granted the store a Declaratory Order, meaning that as long as all the refurbishments are carried out in accordance with planning permission, it will indeed be granted a full pub licence.

A rep for Brown Thomas joked that the in-store bar would mean that customers (and their spouses) could "slightly anaesthetise" themselves from the amounts they were spending.

Well, we're hoping it won't come to that, but we certainly wouldn't say no to a Cosmo or two as we browse all the fancy-ass clothes.

Sean Ward who?

It seems that Georgia May Foote has totally forgotten all about her former boyfriend as she makes plans to move in with recently confirmed new bae, Giovanni Pernice.

Having only been dating a month, the pair confirmed they are planning to shack up in an interview with the Mirror yesterday.

The Corrie star revealed that she was making plans to move from her family home in Manchester to London. And why?

Well, apparently the 24-year-old is "just at that age now."

And when asked if she would be moving in with Giovanni, they both reportedly replied "Yes!"

The pair will be seemingly spending ALL their time together from now on so as they are also currently in training for the Strictly Come Dancing tour.

"It's so nice to be able to spend this time together. We had such an amazing experience on Strictly, it's nice to be able to go on tour together now and experience this," said Georgia.

"It's the full journey, it's been amazing."

We bet it has…

While Georgia was with her boyfriend of seven months Sean Ward while filming the show, the pair went their separate ways pretty much right after the final.

And though rumours circulated about a budding romance between Georgia and her dance partner, the pair only confirmed it a few weeks back when Giovanni posted a cute selfie with his new lady.

And since then the couple have been pretty up front with their relationship and even reportedly enjoyed a holiday to Disneyland in their time off.

Let's hope this one lasts, folks.

What's the key to keeping your toyboy in check? A very pert derrière according to Miss Kate Hudson.

While Nick Jonas and Kate's romance was supposed to be a casual fling it seems that the pair have taken their relationship well into winter as they were snapped together on a ski trip earlier this month.

However, things were not always simple between the on-again, off-again couple.

According to US Weekly, a source revealed that Nick had made the decision to end the fling in November but it would seem that Kate had a cunning plan.

That very month, Kate's stylist Sophie Lopez took to her Instagram to share a Polaroid snap of Kate in the tub.

The 36-year-old actress even posted a cheeky comment on the pic saying: "Omg! You are so fired! #Fabletics."

But if this source is to be believed, Sophie was told by Kate to post this in order to show the 23-year-old singer exactly what he is missing.

And if all this is true, then it would seem that the plan has most definitely worked as the handsome due seem to be still together.

The pair were spotted hanging out over the summer though they have remained tightlipped about any romantic relationship.

Kate has two children from previous marriages to Muse frontman, Matthew Bellamy and lead singer of rock group the Black Crowes, Chris Robinson.

Louis Tomlinson and Briana Jungwirth have welcomed a baby boy, if the reports on social media are to be believed.

According to various tweets posted this morning, the One Direction star has already become a dad – which certainly ties in with Briana's expected due date of late January.

The reports were sparked by a congratulatory message posted on Instagram by a woman claiming to be Briana's grandmother.

"Louis just let Ur heart dance. U now have another you. A gift that will want to be just like YOU," wrote Marianna Case, who goes under the Instagram handle @cyberwomannetwork.

'Love him & my young grandchild that gave him to you. LET her know she's special. She just wanted to love U not even knowing who U were or your profile Ur & reputation. Be free & just LIVE. It's simple. Not complex."

Marianna has shared family photos before that appear to be of Briana and her mum Tammi, but there's no confirmation as yet on whether she really is linked to the family.

However fans on Twitter have of course taken the news as gospel:

Even if today's news turns out to not be true, it's surely only a matter of weeks or even days before Briana does give birth.
