the duchess

Netflix just dropped the trailer for their new series, The Duchess, and we’re absolutely obsessed. This hilarious new show will be coming to the streaming service on September 11.

Canadian comedian, Katherine Ryan, will Executive Produce, write and star in her debut scripted series. The Duchess explores the unique world view of a fashionably disruptive all-round bad person whose redeeming quality is that she’ll sacrifice everything to be a good parent.

While The Duchess is classified as a comedy, Katherine's character does a fantastic job at illustrating the challenging reality of life as a single mother.

Nearly a decade ago, Katherine got pregnant by Irish boy-band pop star, Shep Knight, played by Dublin native Rory Keenan. ‘The last guy to get up off the stool’. He would soon become her greatest enemy, but they now keep a lid on their mutual disdain for one another for the sake of their exquisite daughter, Olive.

Olive is the love of Katherine’s life. Now in a position to grow her family, Katherine debates whether it makes more sense to have a baby with her very devoted new boyfriend, go it alone, or double-down on her first mistake and have another child with her nemesis, Shep.

Katherine’s strength of character and singular perspective challenges everyone around her and the audience in a fantastically entertaining way — it is unapologetic and confrontational — and she manages to be sympathetic and vulnerable in her own trademark way.

As always, this summer we’ve found ourselves lusting after Kate Middleton’s style finds yet again. Let’s face it — the Duchess of Cambridge really knows how to rock a midi dress.

From floral to monochrome, Kate’s a true pro at exuding effortless elegance. We loved this season’s looks so much that we decided to hunt down some suitable dupes at affordable prices. Be quick though — we have a feeling that these are going to sell out fast!

The Floral Shirt-Dress

The Duchess wore this summery look on her trip with Prince William to Barry Island in Wales in early August. This leaf-print belted midi shirt-dress from M&S is a very cost-effective alternative, priced at €54.

The White Midi-Dress

This clean and classy shirt-dress made its debut at Wimbledon in 2019, and Kate looked just as stunning in it again this year when she wore it to Baby Basics UK, a baby bank in Sheffield. The Duchess helped unpack donations, before talking to parents about how baby banks have provided them with invaluable support when they needed it most. This white midi shirt-dress, complete with puff-sleeves and a tie-waist-belt from River Island (and available on ASOS), is the perfect dupe for this elegant number. Plus, it’s an absolute bargain on sale for only €60.83.

The Polka Dot Dress

If you’re looking for a chic and trendy pattern then black and white polka dots are the way to go. We adored this timeless outfit Kate wore back in July, when she was promoting the BBC Education initiative, Tiny Happy People. This shorter barb polka dot tea-dress from Joanie is a great alternative, which you can wear all year round, coming in at nearly €50.

The Summer Floral Dress

Who doesn’t love a summery floral dress? Definitely not Kate anyway, as she was glowing in this vibrant, floral piece. With so many amazing patterns and styles out there at the moment, it really was a struggle to find one which matched The Duchess’ dress perfectly. However, we think this pink-floral-print, angel-sleeved midi-dress from Topshop fits the bill nicely. It’s available in regular, tall and petite sizes for only €64.

New guidelines of been released by the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) to reflect the public audience's changing views on sexual content and violence.

Research shows that a surprising 95% of teenagers have been calling for stronger classification on media, with the youth especially worried about watching fictional scenarios which could realistically occur in their own lives.

The BBFC are implementing alterations which sees movies depicting rape and sexual violence as rated 15 rather than 12A.

Keira Knightley's famous period drama The Duchess, which was classified in the 12 category at the time of release, would now be considered as 15 under the new guidelines as a result of the rape scene.

In the study involving more than 10,000 people, 97% of parents as well as young people are asking for stricter guidelines for online content and tougher classification.

David Austin, BBFC chief executive, said: “Over the last five years the way we consume film and video has changed beyond all recognition. That’s why it’s so important that there is consistency between what people watch on and offline."

Austin continued; “The research shows that parents and teenagers want us to give them the information and guidance that they need to view what’s right for them."

“We are updating our standards around depictions of sexual violence and very strong sex references to reflect changes in public attitudes," he continued.

Since 2014, British views of sex have consistently transformed and progressed with the times. Audiences now want higher classifications for sexual content.

BBFC claim that “the language of pornography” and strong sexual references are also expected to gain an 18 certificate.

The BBFC maintain that audiences are more tolerant of violent content than other potentially troubling material, according to their research, which is worrying.

Austin added: “We’re here to listen to what people want, which is why they trust our age ratings. So it’s encouraging to know that we’ve been classifying content in line with what people want and expect when it comes to difficult themes around credible real-life scenarios."

“We also know that people are more comfortable with issues such as action violence," he concluded. The guidelines will be officially released on February 28.
