Paris

One year in Ireland; a year since I left behind Paris to – FINALLY!  – live with my lovely Irish boyfriend (and now fiancé).

I didn't need much persuading: long-distance relationships might have their charms, but after five years, the twice-a-month Ryanair commute was getting tiresome.

And with 12 months of habitation in this country now under my belt, I have grown to love it a lot more than I thought I ever would.

Here's why…

1) People are very friendly

A few weeks after I arrived, I was working around Grand Canal Dock and I forgot to fill up my Leap card – the insane price of the bus and public transport in general is also something I had a hard time adjusting to. When the bus driver told me the card didn't have enough money on it, a lovely young lady offered to pay for me. No questions asked, she didn’t want anything from me, she was just being kind. Not a chance that would EVER happen in Paris.

2) The alcohol issue

Irish people are famous for their drinking, but I do think there is a real alcohol problem in this country. Don’t get me wrong, we do love our wine and spirits in France, but we don’t have this culture to drink purely and solely to get drunk. Most people are able to have one or two glasses – rather than five… or ten. Also, WHAT is it with off-licences times? Do the authorities really think that people will curb their drinking if they can’t buy booze before 10.30am or after 10pm?

3) Food

Living in a foreign country, you miss your friends and family, of course, but mostly you miss the food. Especially when the food is French. Not that you can't find nice stuff in Ireland, you most definitely can, but it’s just the taste of home you miss. Among the French community, the French week in Lidl is probably the most exciting event of the year. On our Facebook groups, we also share tips on where to find the best raclette or croissants in town. Food is for French people what alcohol is for the Irish.

4) The renting situation

Insane, properly insane. I never thought it would be that hard to find a decent affordable place in Dublin. It is much worse than Paris, both in terms of price, quality… and stress involved. And if it is hard for Irish people imagine what it is like for foreign people, who have no proof of address or bank account or job when they arrive.

5) The immersion

I just can’t get over it. Ireland is a fully developed country, yet for some reason, there is still no hot water in the tap unless you turn on the fecking immersion 30 minutes before you plan to use it. How come every country in the world (or almost) has figured it out and Ireland still hasn’t?!

6) Christmas time

At home, you are not allowed even mention the word Christmas until December, let alone put up decorations or bring out reindeer jumpers. In Ireland, Christmas is like a marathon and you never seem to see the finish line. Between the shopping, the eating, the songs, the million Christmas parties and the alcohol, you end up looking forward to the January detox by December 12.

7) The 'summer'

What summer? Sorry, but I didn’t see anything that looked like summer over the past 12 months. I remember a couple of pretty sunny weeks in May (I think), but that was it. All these summer clothes I got in May were worn once, at best. This year, I have decided to invest in boots and a coat – which I can then just wear constantly. Perfect!

Jesy Nelson has been keeping her love life under wraps after a well publicised split from fiancé Jake Roche in November.

As Paris officially marked the one-year anniversary of last November’s terrorist attacks, with a concert by Sting in the since abandoned Bataclan, French citizens are sharing their thoughts on the tragedy.

Parisians are memorialising  the country’s deadliest terror attacks with striking images of places of importance on Twitter.

The images, taken one year ago and, again, in the present day, show the devastation that occurred 365 days ago.

More than 400 people are still recovering from physical wounds, as 20 remain hospitalised.

A further 600 are receiving counselling and psychological support for the mental scars inflicted by the tragedy.

President Francois Hollande and the Mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, will unveil commemorative plaques dedicated to the victims at the sites where people lost their lives to the terror attack.

Many official events are due to take place in Paris on Sunday. French residents have also been asked to place a small candle in their windows, in memory of the victims.

France remains in a state of emergency since the attacks, which will continue until the New Year.

The investigation into the tragedy is still ongoing, with nine of the attackers and four key accomplices dead, and a further 14 in custody.

It's been almost a year since a series of coordinated terrorist attacks in the French capital left 130 people dead and dozens more injured.

The horrifying events of November 13, which sent shock waves throughout Paris and the wider world, ultimately resulted in the declaration of a three-month state of emergency across France.

And today, Sting has announced that on the eve of the attacks' one-year anniversary, he will be re-opening the Bataclan Theatre which saw the slaughter of 89 concert-goers attending an Eagles of Death Metal gig on the night.

Sharing a photo of the iconic Parisian venue on Twitter, Sting wrote: "Exclusive concert in Paris for re-opening of @le_bataclan just announced for Sat., Nov. 12. Details/ticket info at http://www.sting.com."

The acclaimed star released further details on his website and was eager to explain the motivation behind his decision to take to the stage on the eve of the anniversary.

"In re-opening the Bataclan, we have two important tasks to reconcile." he began.

"First, to remember and honour those who lost their lives in the attack a year ago, and second to celebrate the life and the music that this historic theatre represents."

"In doing so we hope to respect the memory as well as the life affirming spirit of those who fell. We shall not forget them," he wrote.

It has been confirmed that all revenue from the show will be donated to Life For Paris and 13 Novembre: Fraternité Verité.

As an increasing number of sources confirm that she is struggling to cope after her armed robbery ordeal, Kim Kardashian West has made a fleeting return to social media.

The reality star – who was bound and gagged in a luxury apartment during Paris Fashion Week – has reportedly logged into Twitter to unfollow 13 people.

According to The Sun, the mother of two’s fans began to share encouraging messages with her as she reduced her “following” list to 108 people.

The peculiar move comes as insiders claim the 35-year-old remains “paranoid” after the attack which saw her lose $10 million worth of jewellery.

While Kim continues to keep a low profile, yesterday TMZ reported that she has filed a lawsuit against a media outlet who suggested she had lied about aspects of the robbery.

Kim Kardashian West is reportedly suing an online media outlet for suggesting she lied about her brutal Paris Fashion Week robbery experience.

TMZ has reported that the mother of two has filed a lawsuit against MediaTakeOut.com for three posts about the ordeal which saw $10 million worth of jewellery being stolen from the luxury Parisian apartment she was renting.

One of the site’s posts alleged that the KUWTK star had “staged” the robbery, but Kim’s lawsuit claims the site used random social media users as its sources.

Another story suggested the “French authorities” suspect the 35-year-old had “let the robbers in” to the apartment herself.

According to TMZ, Kim’s legal team previously asked the site to remove the stories, but since they’ve received no response they have decided to take action.

The news comes as Khloe Kardashian revealed to Ellen Degeneres that her sister is not doing well after the ordeal.

Kim Kardashian has left her New York City apartment for the first time since arriving in the US after being held at gunpoint in Paris.

According to E! News, the famed reality star exited the TriBeCa apartment with her two young children and husband, Kanye West, through a backdoor, before being picked up by two black SUVs.

US Weekly has reported that the vans then transported the family to the airport, from where they are expected to take a private flight back to LA.

The family’s security has reportedly been “amped up 1000 percent” since Kim was left begging for her life in an exclusive Parisian apartment while armed raiders stole over €10 million worth of her jewellery.

While Kanye has rescheduled a number of his St Pablo tour dates to support his wife, Kim is believed to have cancelled her upcoming appearances for the next few weeks.

Kanye West has rescheduled two of his upcoming Saint Pablo concerts after his wife, Kim Kardashian, was held at gunpoint in Paris.

According to a statement from Live Nation, the rapper’s Philadelphia and Detroit shows – which were originally scheduled for this week – have been pushed back until December because of “family concerns”.

As reported by Rolling Stone, the father of two will recommence his tour in Chicago this Friday.

Yesterday, the Famous hit-maker left his New York concert mid-show to be with his wife when she landed in the city just hours after a group of armed robbers dressed in police uniform attacked her in a luxury Parisian apartment.

While full details of the robbery have yet to emerge, early reports suggest the reality star was left begging for her life as the gang tied her up and made off with millions of dollars worth of jewellery.

In a shocking incident that understandably left her "badly shaken," Kim Kardashian was this morning ambushed by armed men at the luxurious Parisian apartment where she was staying for Fashion Week.

Located on the prestigious 7 Rue Tronchet in the chic 8th arrondissement, the reality TV star was subjected to the raid at around 2am – reportedly being tied up in the bathroom while the thieves made off with €10m worth of jewellery.

Local media in France furthermore says that two mobile phones containing "personal information," as well as cash totaling €1,000 and a designer handbag were all taken.

Now, images of the apartment where the attack took place have begun to emerge.

Favoured by the likes of the Mick Jagger, Leonardo Di Caprio, Madonna and Prince, the property boasts a total of nine high-end short-term stay homes and is branded as 'Hôtel Partiulier'. However, such is its uber-exclusive status that it doesn't have a website or publicly-available contact details.

Costing around €26,500 a month, according to thesun.co.ukTMZ.com says that during the robbery Kim begged the men for her life and told them she had two young children.

Paris police said it is employing "all possible means to solve the case and arrest the perpetrators". The inquiry is being handled by the serious crimes unit, la brigade de répression du banditisme, and the Paris judicial police.

After assisting them with their investigation, Kim herself has now returned to the US to be with her husband, Kanye West, and children North, 3, and Saint, ten months.

It's the rumour that refuses to go away: several sources have continued to declare that Cheryl Cole is currently expecting her first child with her boyband boyfriend of ten months, Liam Payne.

And stepping out in Paris over the weekend – her first public appearance in some time – the former X Factor judge certainly gave her fans plenty to talk about.

Attending a L'Oreal event – a brand for which she is an ambassador – Cheryl looked beautiful wearing an all-black jump-suit with embellishment detail.

Earlier, the 33-year-old singer had been keen to keep her stomach firmly hidden, opting for a series of heavy coats despite the 20C heat in the French capital.

Although she is currently in the midst of divorcing her second husband Jean Bernard Fernandez Versini, Cheryl and Liam, 23, began seeing each other late last year.

By May they had gone public with their union – posting a cosy snap to Instagram.

The couple has so far opted not to comment on the pregnancy rumours, but it is believed that they are now preparing to issue a statement later this week.

I'm a self-confessed Disney lover. I grew up watching the movies over and over again and started going to Disneyland, Paris at the age of one (I've been an embarrassing number of times).

So, if you're just as obsessed as me, then you'll be happy to know that the company want to hire a few Irish people.

The theme-park announced that it is hiring in sales, the food & beverage department and the hospitality department.

  • Great communication and people skills, as well as respect for perfect procedure
  • Comfort in speaking in French and English
  • A third European language is a plus

It's the modern bride dilemma: just how do you rock killer footwear on your wedding day… while also still honouring your vegan lifestyle?

However, it seems that Monsieur Christian won't let an animal-loving bride down – he was able to come up with custom-made pumps without needing to use leather or skins.

New York-resident Jennie Wilson was engaged in December 2014 – but six months later turned vegan.

"I always intended to wear Christian Louboutin shoes on my wedding day," Ms Wilson, 30, told the New York Post. However, she added: "I did not want an animal to die [just so I could wear] its skin as leather."

It seeming took months for Louboutin to find materials that met his exacting standards and to figure out a cruelty-free construction – but the cobbler got there in then end, allowing Jennie to walk down the aisle on June 11 in France in unique footwear.

The painstaking procedure involved making casts of the bride’s feet.

“Once [Louboutin] determined they were able to source the materials, it was seamless,” she stated, explaining that the shoes were eventually made from a pale pink satin-like fabric in the designer's Paris atelier.

It has been reported that standard made-to-measure Louboutins take five weeks to process and cost at least €3,000 – although Jennie won't reveal how much exactly she paid for her 6in vegan version (she did say she spent "well over" $100,000 in total on the nuptials).

Louboutin furthermore constructed a cruelty-free sparkly clutch-style bag as a gift for Jennie.

She married her fiancé, Richard Smith, 30, at the Château d’Ermenonville near Paris wearing custom vegan dress by Galia Lahav.

And a total of 60 guests dined on – understandably – vegan fare once vows were exchanged.
