Cool with heavy rain: it could only be the October Bank Holiday weekend!

Yes, sadly Met Eireann isn’t the bringer of good news today – it has told the country that the weather outlook for the long weekend is somewhat bleak.

How bleak, you ask? Well, think the likes of hail, thunder, and freezing conditions at night.

Yup, temperatures will hover around the 10C mark – a good 5C colder than it is now – with plenty of rain showers spread throughout the country.

As meteorologist Joan Blackburn explained: “It looks like a cool weekend with showers in place on Saturday and on Sunday. Some of the showers are likely to be heavy.”

“The prospects aren‘t great,” she added.

Met Eireann furthermore explained: “Saturday and Sunday will be similar days with sunny spells and scattered showers developing in the afternoon with some heavy falls in places and a slight chance of thunder and hail.

“It will turn noticeably colder for the weekend as temperatures will only reach the low teens by day and will fall close to freezing by night with moderate to fresh westerly winds making it feel even colder.”

We really hate to kill your weekend buzz, but this weather this weekend is bad enough that people are being warned about what’s to come.

Everyone, especially road users, are warned that pretty much torrential rain is to be expected around the country. You are advised by Met Éireann to take extra care while driving.

Up to 35mm of rain is expected to fall on Friday night and into the early hours of Saturday morning.

A yellow warning has been put in place for Leinster, Cavan, Waterford and Monaghan, while there is also some spot flooding to be expected.

An orange warning has also been put in place for most of Connacht, Donegal, Clare, Cork, Kerry, Limerick and Tipperary. Delightful.

“Widespread, very heavy rain, with some thundery downpours will develop Thursday night and persist through Friday,” say Met Éireann and the Road Safety Authority is advising anyone out on the roads to be mindful of hazardous conditions.

The orange weather warning is described in more detail on Met Éireann’s website if anyone wants to know what they’re in for over the next few days:

“Is for weather conditions which have the capacity to impact significantly on people in the affected areas.

The issue of an Orange level weather warning implies that all recipients in the affected areas should prepare themselves in an appropriate way for the anticipated conditions.”

So basically, everyone needs a good umbrella for the weekend. We’re starting to wonder if summer even happened at all?

Forecasters have asked the public to help them come up with names for storms that are due to hit Ireland sometime in the autumn and forthcoming winter.

Met Éireann, and the UK Met Office, reached out to twitter users to provide them with some suggestions for new names to attach to the storms. As you can imagine, once people got wind of the #nameourstorms hastag, the puns started come in rapidly.

We imagine it could be because some of our storms can be a touch more tranquil than the tropical monsoons we see abroad, but there were plenty of users out there who couldn’t wait to have some fun with the idea.

We have to admit we are looking forward to seeing who made the cute for this one.

At the first mutterings of an "Indian Summer," Irish people tend to go into overdrive with dreams of what could be.

So of course as soon as we heard that some sun might be headed our way come September, we began getting VERY excited for the possibility of a sun-drenched festival weekend at Electric Picnic.

And with Day 1 of the Stradbally musical festival just three days away, Met Éireann have finally confirmed the good news. We will have sun… Loads of it!

Speaking on Spin 1038 this morning, forecaster Joan Blackburn said that revellers could expect temperatures of around "17 or 18 degrees [Celsius] in the afternoons" over this weekend.

Okay, it's not quite "sun drenched," but 17-18 degrees is the perfect festival temperature… warm enough to channel Vanessa Hudgens in some skimpy festival wear, but mild enough to stay sweat-free.

Don't forget a hoody or two though, as Joan says that mornings and late evenings will still be relatively chilly.

But her overall prediction for the weekend? "Dry and pleasant generally."

That'll do for us, Joan. That'll do for us.

"Cloudy today with outbreaks of rain, heavy in bursts, across Leinster, Connacht and Ulster, with accumulations leading to local spot flooding, especially in Ulster…" that's what Met Eireann has to say about today – after a gloriously sunny Friday got everyone's hopes up for a cracker of a weekend.

And most folk will indeed be right now looking out at rainy, cloudy skies.

Met Eireann has already issued a weather warning, which will stay in effect until 6pm.

And forecaster Pat Clarke has warned us to expect thunder and plenty of downpours: "Friday was pretty warm and was around 22C in some places, but that won't be repeated again over the weekend."

He added that a spell of very heavy rain has already moved across the Irish Sea from Britain, and has now spread across the country.

"For a lot of the country, it's a fairly wet day," Pat explained, although he did say that "it might pick up in the north-east of the country" this afternoon.

Finally, we've got our summer weather back.

After a full month of lashing rain and wind, it seems we can finally put our winter coats away again… for a few days.

The weather has been slowly picking up all week. and according to Met Éireann we can expect temperatures of 19 to 24 degrees Celsius in many areas today, though the west coast will stay around 18 degrees. Win!

As for the weekend, you had better root out your shorts because we're in for a mild and sunny few days. While temperatures will drop to between 16 and 19 degrees Celsius tomorrow, both Saturday and Sunday are expected to be dry and sunny.

Of course, this is still Ireland so there is a risk of, you guessed it, "scattered showers". Sure what would an Irish barbecue be without the looming threat of a rain shower?

Come next week, the weather will be generally "unsettled", but the mild temperatures are expected to last into Monday.

See you at the beach!

Met Eireann's Evelyn Cusack has seemingly taken a pop at her colleague Jean Byrne's distinct dress choices.

Jean, who has been both celebrated and ridiculed for her fearless approach to onscreen fashion, likes to wear leather, lace, bright colours, unusual necklines and quirky accessories while presenting the weather forecast to the nation.

Evelyn on the other hand prefers a more conservative approach, usually donning smart skirts and jackets, or blouses with tailored trousers.

And it seems the latter takes a dim view of more 'out there' attire.

"It's hard to take a woman seriously when you're hearing her leather skirt squeaking and her earrings dangling," she said in an interview with Woman's Way.

She continued: "I'm a bit like Angela Merkel, nobody comments on her clothes, she just has 40 different jackets in different colours.

Evelyn then added: "I don't think women should be sexy at work, that's my opinion."

But while Ms Cusack, 50, may look to German politicians when it comes to choosing her workplace wardrobe, Ms Byrne favours Irish designers such as Joanne Hynes and Claire O'Connor.

She told Irish Country magazine earlier this year: "The camera makes you look bigger anyway, it puts on at least 10lbs and jackets make you look even bigger."

Jean explained that she therefore decided to experiment more with her onscreen style, saying: "It became a little bit more relaxed at one point and then I just decided, 'Okay, I'm a bit tired of the old jackets, I'll wear one or two of my own things'."

She added: "I don't go out of my way to find new designers but I do go out of my way in my spare time to source things and put them together."

After some seriously bleak weather conditions earlier this month, we were all starting to breathe easy again, but of course Mother Nature wasn't going to let little old Ireland off that easily!

Met Eireann have just released another grim weather forecast for this week, announcing that snow, ice and "bitterly cold" conditions can be expected from Wednesday night. We won't put that winter jacket into storage just yet, so.

"It will be windy with frequent wintry showers giving falls of sleet and snow, and accumulations of several centimetres of snow are likely in many areas, particularly in the North and West," said Met Éireann this morning.

Even if your area isn't affected by snowfall, people all over the country are still advised to prepare for low to freezing temperatures, as well as a strong possibility of frost and ice.

The wintery temperatures are expected to continue next weekend too, with "severe frosts and icy roads by night" and "daytime temperatures 4 to 6 degrees at best."

Just when we thought spring was on the way!
